Happy Birthday Neda Agha Soltan, Rest in Peace!
"Life and death in Iran's Prisons".Happy Birthday Neda Agha Soltan, Rest in Peace!Today is Neda Agha Soltan’s birthday. She was shot and killed on June 20, 2009 during a post-election protest in Iran. Her bloody death was video recorded with a mobile phone and spread on YouTube. Neda Agha Soltan would have been 28 years old today. In November 2009, Babak Dad, an Iranian journalist and blogger wrote an open letter to the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. An excerpt reads:Why is it that your thirst for power has made your stupidity unlimited? What did you gain by killing Neda other than quickening your own demise? Now those poor murdered people are a thorn in your side and proof of the cruelty of your illegitimate regime. This rash behaviour (which is your downfall) is a sign of your ever-existing incompetence. Can’t you see that today Neda Agha Soltan is a symbol for oppression of the Iranian people and there is a humanities scholarship at Oxford University named after her?Images of the bloody crackdown fueled worldwide outrage. Agha-Soltan’s pictures are still carried on placards at rallies outside Iran.“She will become the image of this brutality, and of the role — the truly significant role — that women have played in fighting this regime,” said Abbas Milani of Stanford University in California. “I think that women are the unsung heroes of the last few years. They are the ones who began chipping away at the authority, the absolute dictatorship of the mullahs.”Iranian authorities continue to deny that security forces were responsible for killing Agha-Soltan.Instead, they have offered at least three separate explanations. They have blamed the CIA, terrorists and supporters of the opposition movement themselves. One year after Agha-Soltan’s death, Iranian officials have yet to announce a single arrest in connection with her killing.Video : A SONG FOR NEDA.Read and see the full story here.
