Yemen gets new president, suicide bomber kills 26 at presidential palace.(AA).A suicide bomber blew up a vehicle outside a presidential palace in southeastern Yemen Saturday, killing 26 elite Republican Guards, under the command of outgoing president Ali Abdullah Saleh’s son Ahmed, medics and a military official said.
“The bodies of 26 soldiers were taken to the mortuary and there are many others wounded,” said a medic at the Ibn Sina hospital in the Hadramawt provincial capital Mukalla.“A pick-up truck driven by a suicide bomber exploded at the entrance of the presidential palace in Mukalla,” a military official said.“Seven of the wounded have already been hospitalized while others are on their way to hospitals.”The attack, apparently by a suicide bomber, happened in Hadramout, far from the capital of Sana’a, where Yemen’s new president took an oath of office on Saturday.Yemen’s south is a turbulent region where secessionists are seeking to revive a socialist southern state and where an active wing of al-Qaeda has taken root.No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
The bombing came as Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi took the oath of office as the first new president in Sana’a since 1978 after a year of turmoil and bloodshed.Read the full story here, more here.
