The Egyptian newspaper "A - Shuruk" reported that a destroyer belonging to China's army crossed the Suez Canal today (Sunday) on its way to the coast of Syria. According to the report, it's said to be on its way to participate in naval maneuvers there. The Egyptian newspaper "Al - Wafd" also reported on the crossing, and elaborated on the increased security measures taken at the time of the crossing. Beijing has so far stood alongside Syrian President Bashar Assad, vetoing sanctions on Damascus in the UN Security Council, in three different votes. It was reported last month that China, Iran and Russia were to hold a large naval exercise in Syria. "A - Shuruk" claimed that Suez Canal authorities allowed the destroyer to pass through after receiving approval from the Egyptian Defense Ministry. It crossed the canal under enhanced security measures. "Al - Wafd" reports in the name of canal officials that security forces were deployed on the banks of the canal, fishing was prohibited, as was use of the canal crossings to the Sinai.More here.
