Is There an Obama Donor Scandal in the make??
Is There an Obama Donor Scandal in the make??(WHD).BY Keith Koffler. That’s what some people around Washington are wondering following a story last week by veteran reporter Paul Bedard of the Washington Examiner that “a national magazine and a national web site are preparing “a blockbuster donor scandal story” and that the White House has been trying to squash the piece.
According to Bedard: According to the sources, a taxpayer watchdog group conducted a nine-month investigation into presidential and congressional fundraising and has uncovered thousands of cases of credit card solicitations and donations to Obama and Capitol Hill, allegedly from unsecure accounts, and many from overseas.
That might be a violation of federal election laws. Last spring, I wrote that the Obama campaign wasn’t checking credit cards. Maybe it’s related to this issue. According to me: The Obama campaign is not employing the widely used credit card address verification system to check whether the address submitted by a donor matches the address tied to the credit card, an omission that might allow supporters to use a fake identity when contributing. The practice could potentially allow donors in possession of illicitly obtained credit card numbers to exceed the campaign limit, and to permit overseas supporters to contribute. The Mitt Romney campaign does require use of the system and asks the donor to include the three or four numbers- sometimes known as the “CVV” code – on the back of the card. The code helps determine whether the donor is in possession of the card. Bedard said the story could be published Monday.Read the full story here.
