Iranian MP confirms country’s military presence in Syria after, High-ranking Iranian IRGC general killed in Syria.(Taz).
Iranian MP, Javad Ghoddousi Karimi has confirmed Iran's military presence in Syria, ISNA news agency reported.Hundreds of Iranian battalions are in Syria, member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran's Parliament said on November 3.
Syrian commanders, backed by Iranian forces, announce army's victories against opposition, he added.
Earlier, Iranian officials dismissed news about military presence in Syria, while Syrian opposition groups repeatedly have claimed that Iranian forces, in particular, IRGC are fighting against them.
Later in October, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran is not militarily present in Syria.
A high-ranking Iranian IRGC general Mohammad Jamalizadeh Paghaleh was killed in Syria, Mehr news agency reported.
Reportedly, the general, who was also the member of IRGC's Qods force, did not go to Syria officially, but voluntarily. Jamalizadeh was killed by Syrian opposition, which Mehr called as Takfiri groups.
Paghaleh was one of IRGC commanders during the Iran-Iraq war. After war he served in Kerman Province's Commission Against Smuggling.
He will be buried tomorrow in his hometown of Eastern Iranian city of Kerman.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011, with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees putting the number of Syrian refugees at two million.
The UN refugee agency further said some 4.2 million people have also been displaced inside Syria since the beginning of the conflict in the Arab country.
Iran is a close ally of the Syrian government and it always shows its support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad.
