PM Shamir planned to save 2 million Jews as Soviet Union appeared on verge of breaking up
PM Shamir planned to save 2 million Jews as Soviet Union appeared on verge of breaking up. (IMRA).
Avi Kfiri reveals in a article in Makor Rishon on 8 October that PM Shamir at the start of the 1990's set up a top secret group to prepare the emergency evacuation of up to 2 million Jews form the Soviet Union.
Shamir was feared that if the Soviet Union crumbled that hundreds of thousands of Jews would be killed in pogroms.
The planning went into great detail with Israeli agents visiting the Soviet Union to identify evacuation routes - including buildings that could be used for way stations and how arrangements could be made to feed the Jews as they were in transit. There were even plans to fly in thousands of IDF soldiers using Hercules planes to protect the Jews as they were evacuated from particularly dangerous areas.
