Greeks in Turkey on the Verge of Extinction.

Greeks, Assyrians and Armenians in Turkey on the Verge of Extinction. (AINA).

By Uzay Bulut
The current Greek population in Turkey is estimated at fewer than 2,000. But this population decline was not due to natural causes; the Greek community has become nearly extinct due to many state-sponsored attacks and pressure.

The largest attacks took place during the last years of the Ottoman Empire with pogroms and discrimination continuing until the present day.

In 2007, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) announced that "the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire between 1914 and 1923 constituted a genocide against Armenians, Assyrians, and Pontian and Anatolian Greeks."

The destruction of Greek heritage and institutions, including schools, continued after the Turkish republic was established in 1923. One tool to annihilate non-Turkish communities including Greeks was the so-called "Liberation Courts" that were set up in many Turkish cities.

"These courts," writes the author Raffi Bedrosyan, "passed arbitrary decisions that almost invariably resulted in death sentences, with no defense or appeals allowed, and hangings carried out immediately.

Among the victims of these courts were hundreds of Greek teachers in the American and Greek schools of the region, prominent community leaders, clergymen, and, tragically, entire members of the Merzifon Greek high school football team, only because the team was named Pontus Club, which was deemed sufficient reason to label them a rebel terrorist organization."

Beginning on September 6, 1955, everything belonging to Greeks in Istanbul -- homes, schools, offices, businesses, churches, cemeteries − was attacked by Muslim Turks. This pogrom greatly escalated Greek emigration from Turkey.

Nine years later came the forced Greek expulsions. In 1964, as a result of tensions over Cyprus, Turkey broke its agreement with Greece and prohibited all commercial dealings by Greeks holding a Greek passport, leading thereby to the departure of at least 45,000 Greeks.

In 1992 Helsinki Watch noted that "the Greeks were not allowed to sell their houses or property or to take money from their bank accounts." They were forced to leave their birthplaces only with personal items weighing 20 kilos and money amounting to 20 dollars. According to the researcher Salih Erturan, the 1964 expulsion brought an end to Greeks of Istanbul.

Turkey's Greek-speaking Orthodox citizens still cannot freely obtain education in their institutions. The Halki seminary in Istanbul, or the Theological School of Halki, the main theological school of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, was closed down by the Turkish state in 1971 and has not been reopened.

In addition, the Turkish government does not recognize the "Ecumenical" status of the Patriarch and Patriarchate, the spiritual center of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

The Allard K. Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic of Yale Law School wrote in its legal analysis:
"Centuries of Turkish discrimination against and persecution of the Patriarchate and the Orthodox minority have been well documented... Turkey's treatment of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Orthodox minority violates its obligations under international human rights law."
The Turkish government has also confiscated much of the real estate belonging to Greek Orthodox Christians. "Many properties have been lost over the past few decades, such as office buildings, orphanages and other institutions," said Walter Flick, a religious expert with the International Society for Human Rights in Germany, speaking to Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany's international broadcaster.

The Buyuk Akinti Burnu Greek primary school in the Arnavutkoy district of Istanbul, for example, was restored and reopened in 2011 by the Bogazici University Alumni Association (BUMED) − but not as a Greek school. It was reopened as a Turkish kindergarten. The Greek primary school had been established in 1902 when there were still sizeable Greek communities in what was then called Constantinople, but was closed in 2009 due to a lack of Greek students, reported the Turkish Dogan News Agency (DHA).

In 2016, only 19 Greek students graduated from three Greek schools in Turkey, reported the weekly newspaper Agos. Yannis Demircioglu, the principal of the Greek Zografyan High School, said that for the last 21 years, "the number of graduates has been ranging between 19 and 27 every year."
In the 1926-27 school year, there were 58 schools belonging to the Greek community in Turkey with 7213 students, 352 teachers and 222 administrators. Only five have survived, according to Demircioglu.

"The real problem is that we have a limited number of students," the former representative of Minority Foundations, Laki Vingas, said.

"Founded in 1454, Fener Greek High School is one of the oldest education institutions in Europe, but it has fewer than 50 students now. This troubles the administration. It is the same with Zapyon and Zografyan... These schools are centuries old and the last remaining Greek communal institutions.
"Their situation is alarming. Istanbul was once a leading city in terms of education, not only for local Greek culture there, but also for Greek communities in all of Anatolia, Greece, and Balkans. This is a huge decline, and we are struggling to keep the schools open. This is the most worrisome issue for me."

From Greek Asia Minor to 21st Century Turkey with a Dying Greek Community
Before Turks arrived in Asia Minor from Central Asia in the eleventh century, the indigenous population of the region spoke and wrote in Greek and was Greek Orthodox. Even the names of the region come from the Greek language such as "Anatolia" (from the Greek "Anatole," "east" or "sunrise") and "Asia Minor" (from the Greek "Mikra Asia," little Asia).

However, the Greek cultural heritage in Turkey is on the verge of disappearing forever. Turkey is 99.8% Muslim today. As the researcher Tania Karas wrote, "One thousand, seven hundred Greeks left in a nation of 79 million... A century of oppression has nearly wiped out a religious minority group with historic ties to the region."

The Republican People's Party (CHP), which established the Turkish Republic in 1923 and ruled ‎until 1950, stated in its 1946 report on minorities that its aim was to leave no Greek in ‎Istanbul until the 500th anniversary of the 1453 "conquest" of Istanbul (1953).
It seems that their "dream" is about to come true.

Alawites escape jihadists in Syria, flee to Istanbul, avoiding Conditions in rebel dominated 'Turkish' Aid Camps

Alawites escape jihadists in Syria, flee to Istanbul, avoiding Conditions in rebel dominated 'Turkish' Aid Camps.(HD).

In increasing number of Syrian Alawites, who fled from Aleppo to Turkey’s southeastern province of Gaziantep two months ago, have come to Istanbul in search of a safe haven.
Hundreds are now living in the parks and streets, mainly in the Kumkapı, Fatih and Şirinevler districts of the city. In the last week alone, Alevi associations, led by the Haci Bektas Veli Foundation in Istanbul, have taken more than 200 Syrians from the parks and streets and brought them to cemevis (Alevi worship houses) in order to provide them with shelter.

According to the accounts of these refugees, at least 3,000 escaped from an Alawite neighborhood in Aleppo two months ago, after being targeted by an al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group battling the Syrian regime, Jabhat al-Nusra.

“The rebels attacked us in Aleppo. We had to run away. They were not Syrians, they were jihadists coming from other countries. Some of them come with the aim of jihad, and some of them come for money,” said Hasan (not his real name), who fled to Istanbul with his family.
Witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity and asked for neither the name of the cemevi where they are being looked after, nor their names, be written.

They said they were afraid to stay in the refugee camps located in the border areas of Turkey with the other Syrians who had fled al-Assad’s forces. Although none have stayed in these refugee camps, they are frightened by the rumors they heard.

“The Turkish government wanted to take us to the refugee camp in Kilis but we resisted, we didn’t go. More than half of the Syrians in the camps are supporters of the opposition forces. They force people to go into Syria to fight against the regime. We also heard from our relatives who stayed in these camps that they were threatened with death, and that some women had been raped in the camps,” Hasan said.

“We know what has been going on in the camps. We heard women were being raped there, the supporters of the opposition forces dominate the camps,” said Hasan’s sister-in-law.
Another refugee, Ahmed, said al-Nusra militants had kidnapped some Alawite children and were demanding ransom money.

“The rebels took control of the neighborhood where we used to live and they forced us to leave our apartments. The al-Nusra militants kidnapped some of the Alawite families’ children and demanded ransom money,” he said. Ahmed also said they were searching for jobs from the Turkish government.

“We only need a job to be able to buy bread to our children, we don’t want anything else,” he said.

The cemevi where the Syrian Alawites are taking shelter was attacked by two armed men two days after the interview.

Zeynel Odabaş, one of the board members of the Alevi associations in Istanbul, said the Turkish government should provide the necessary humanitarian conditions for all the Syrian refugees who have fled the war-torn country. “These people needed to be sheltered in a different refugee camp from the others. They think they don’t have any life security in the camps near the border,” she said.

Al-Qaeda militants kill 24 civilians in Syria, among them a mother and a 40-days old infant.

Al-Qaeda militants kill 24 civilians in Syria, among them a mother and a 40-days old infant.(Alalam).

Al-Qaeda linked terrorists in Syria have beheaded all 24 Syrian passengers traveling from Tartus to Ras al-Ain in northeast of Syria, among them a mother and a 40-days old infant.
Gunmen from the terrorist Islamic State of Iraq and Levant stopped the bus on the road in Talkalakh and killed everyone before setting the bus on fire.
According to media reports, the attack was carried out because the passengers who were from three different villages in Ras al-Ain, supported anti-terrorist Kurdish groups which were formed recently to defend Kurdish population against anti-Syria terrorists.
Bodies of a mother and her 40-days infant were also seen among the dead, which were recognized by their relatives.

Syrian Kurdish leader Saleh Muslim warned on Friday that the Kurd minority is facing an ethnic cleansing by al-Qaeda terrorists.

While there is no end in sight to the bloody foreign-fueled conflict in Syria, another front has been formed between the Kurdish militia and extremist militants in Northern Syria.
Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups operating in the country, including the al-Nusra Front, are trying to capture Kurdish territories and make them part of a state they want to create in the region.
Following deadly attacks on Kurdish regions in recent months, groups of Kurdish militia were formed to protect their people.
Anti-Syria armed groups continue to target civilians amid US threats against Syrian army and government which have made militants find it easier to widen their attacks.
Following worldwide criticism, US President Barack Obama delayed an imminent military strike against Syria on August 31, sending the matter to the Congress to get more support.Hmmm.....First they came for the Christians, then they came for the Kurds.........then they came for the Jews.

“Boko-Haram” Terror: The slaughter Of 510 Igbo Christians Amounts To Systematic Ethnic Cleansing & Crimes Against Humanity.

“Boko-Haram” Terror: The Chilling Killing Of 510 Igbo Christians Out Of The 714 “Boko-Haram” Related Deaths In 12 Months (January 2011-January 2012) Amounts To Systematic Ethnic Cleansing and Crimes Against Humanity.(SaharaReporters).By Emeka Umeagbalasi.

The killing Of 510 Igbo Christians:

Other than the two reports particularly the chilling death of over 54,000 Nigerians outside the law since 1999, our further investigations show that up to 510 Igbo Christians may have been slaughtered by politically and ethnically backed “Boko-Haram” Terror Sect in different parts of the Northern Nigeria, from January 2011 to January 2012. This did not include the Jos killings of 2011, where it is believed that up to 400 Igbo Christian traders alone including 48 of them (killed on 8th day of January 2011 at Dilimi and Bauchi Road Markets in Jos) died, out of over 1000 people killed. According to the Associated Press account, at least, 510 people (most of them Igbo Christians) were killed by Boko-Haram Terror Sect in 2011. In the past three weeks that is to say between 22nd day of December 2011 and 13th day of January 2012, at least 300 innocent Nigerians have been killed. This includes about 60 people including Christmas returnees trapped and slaughtered on Enugu-Abakiliki Road on 31st day of December 2011 as well as 35 Nigerians (rights groups’ account) killed countrywide by over-zealous security forces during the national protests and strikes over “petroleum subsidy removal”. The Inspector General of Police claims that eleven people including two security operatives were killed during the protests.

Strictly speaking Your Excellency, in the past three weeks (22-12-2011-13-01-2012), according to respected local and international media, up to 204 innocent Nigerian Christians including, at least, 150 Igbo Christians have been murdered by “Boko-Haram” Islamist Sect. And out of at least 510 people murdered by the violent Islamist Sect in 2011 (Associated Press), at least 350 of them are Igbo Christians. The targeted and systematic killing of Igbo Christians stems from age-long ethnic hatred, disproportionate police protection, and gross insecurity in the Igbo residential and trading areas of the North as well as Igbo pastoralism (migration). Available statistics from the media concerning the 204 “Boko-Haram” Sect’s killings in the past three weeks show that on 22nd day of December 2011, at least six people (Igbo Christians) were slaughtered in Damaturu, Yobe State, Northeast Nigeria; on 23rd day of December 2011, at least 68 people including (many) Igbo Christians, police personnel and soldiers were killed in bomb blasts believed to have been detonated by violent “Boko-Haram” Sect in Damaturu, Yobe State.
On 25th day of December 2011, at least 35 parishioners including over 25 Igbo Christians and two passers-by (Muslims) were massacred at St Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla in Suleja, Niger State, North-central Nigeria. The chilling deaths resulted from bombs detonated by the violent “Boko-Haram” Islamist Sect. At least ten more people mainly Igbo Christians were killed in bomb blasts that hit churches in Jos, Plateau State, North-central Nigeria and Gadaka, in Yobe State, Northeast Nigeria.

Lastly Your Excellency, as a party to the Statute for International Criminal Court, which Nigeria ratified in 2001, we demand that Your Excellency writes and invites the new Chief Prosecutor for International Criminal Court, Madam Fatou Bensaida and her team to Nigeria to commence investigations into these chilling killings, particularly the slaughtering of Igbo Christians in the North, as well as the Jos killings, so as to truly unmask those involved, whether they are in government, ethnic or religious enclaves. This is in line with the recent public statement issued by Madam Navanethen Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. It is also in accordance with relevant provisions of the ICC Statute and the Charter of the United Nations. Read the full story here.

Related : Boko Haram And The Threat Of Political Islam.(SaharaReporters).By By Leo Igwe.
Nigeria’s most deadly islamic sect, Boko Haram, has just exploded mutiple bombs in the city of Kano. Curfew has been imposed and the city- the state and the entire nation is engulfed in tension, fear and uncertainty with some 80 corpses in a morgue and bodies in the streets on Saturday .This group appears unrelenting in its murderous campaign.
Kano has joined the ranks of northern states-Bornu, Yobe, Adamawa, Plateau, Niger where the terror of Boko Haram holds sway. Religious crisis orchestrated by muslim fundamentalists is not new to this northern city but these attacks have brought a frightening dimension to islamic militancy in the region.
Unfortunately, most analysts continue to shy away from the truth- the bitter truth that Boko Haram is an islamist group with a political agenda. Boko Haram is a jihadist organization that has declared war against anybody that is really or imagined to be opposed to its cause. Even when the group has made it clear that they are opposed to western education and want sharia implemented in Nigeria. Boko Haram militants are not asking for jobs. They are not agitating for any finacial reward or compensation. Their cause is religious. Thier agenda is islamists.
They are just a bunch of islamic militants and nihilists who want to turn Nigeria into an islamic empire by force. We in Nigeria must stop decieving ourselves by saying that the Boko Haram attacks have nothing to do with religion. Or that they have nothing to do with Islam. This is not true. Though people can carry out such heinous attacks for other reasons, or be motivated by other secular causes. From the pattern of their attacks, the Boko Haram phenomenon has a lot to do with religion particularly islam. It is the Nigerian version of al Qaeda. The militants are not bombing police stations, UN building and churches for the sake of it. They are not agitating for sharia law for the fun of it. The Boko Haram militants are fighting a holy war. They are prosecuting a jihad for which they expect to be rewarded abundantly in the hereafter with some virgins. That is why the group has not run out of suicide bombers. That is why they have their operational base in the muslim majority states.
Boko Haram militants have been brainwashed by few islamic clerics to believe that they are 'Hezbollah'- the army of Allah. They have been deluded to think that these suicide bomb attacks and other murderous acts they carry out are religious duties in line with the will of Allah and in furtherance of Islam. Nigerian authorities must acknowledge and address the ‘islamic’ roots of the Boko Haram menace now, before it is too late. Read the full story here.
