Millions of Pakistanis receive blasphemy warning texts on their devices. (ET).
ISLAMABAD:
Millions of Pakistanis have been receiving text messages from the government warning them against sharing “blasphemous” content online.
“Uploading & sharing of blasphemous content on Internet is a punishable offense under the law. Such content should be reported on info@pta.gov.pk for legal action,” read the SMS sent by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to all mobile phone subscribers.
A similar note was posted on the agency’s website in Urdu. A PTA spokesperson said the agency was acting on a court order.
Blasphemy is a sensitive issue in the country, with allegations leading to dozens of mob attacks or murders.
Last week a 10-year old boy was killed and five others were wounded when a mob attacked a police station in an attempt to lynch a Hindu man charged with blasphemy for allegedly posting an incendiary image on social media.

German Police Confirm Protecting TV Host After Satire About Erdogan.
German Police Confirm Protecting TV Host After Satire About Erdogan. (Sputnik).
German ZDF broadcaster's TV host Jan Bohmermann has been provided with police protection after reading a satirical poem about the Turkish president during Neo Magazin Royalе program, a Cologne police spokesman confirmed on Wednesday. On Monday, Erdogan filed a lawsuit against the TV host with the prosecutor of the German city of Mainz.
"We cannot disclose any details out of professional considerations, but it is true, a police car keeps watch near his home. Now we are assessing the whole context of the situation in contact with the secret services, clarifying the details," Christoph Gilles told RIA Novosti.
Gilles did not confirm whether Bohmermann had been actually receiving threats.
Erdogan has filed a criminal complaint against the satirist in a case that has prompted a debate in Germany over freedom of speech.
German prosecutors are investigating whether he broke a law against insulting foreign leaders.
Public broadcaster ZDF announced earlier on Tuesday that his weekly satire programme would not go ahead this week because of the "vast amount of media reporting and the resulting focus on the programme and its presenter".
It was not immediately clear if a concrete threat had been made against Boehmermann but Cologne police told German media: "When you can't rule something out then you have to do something."
Bild website reported that the satirist and his family were apparently facing a threat from supporters of the Turkish president. No request for protection measures had come from the comic but were a result of risk analysis, reports said.
Hannelore Kraft, state premier of North-Rhine Westphalia where the satirist lives, tweeted that freedom of satire was part of German democracy: "This should not be put in doubt. Certainly not through external political pressure."
Mrs Merkel emphasised on Tuesday that the deal with Turkey bore no relation to the legal action facing Jan Boehmermann. "Freedom of the press, opinion and science apply and are completely separate from that," she insisted.
The German chancellor had been expected to visit Turkey in the coming days, to open facilities built for refugees with EU funding. However, her spokesman made clear on Monday that there were no immediate plans for a trip. Hmmmm......Now Germany has it's own Rushdie for insulting the 'Caliph'.

Pakistan - Fears grow for Christian Aasia Bibi execution after Mumtaz Qadri's hanging.
Pakistan - Fears grow for Christian Aasia Bibi execution after Mumtaz Qadri's hanging. (ET).
Activists voiced new fears for a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, on death row for blasphemy, as religious groups launched fresh calls for her hanging after this week’s execution of Mumtaz Qadri.
Asia Bibi, a Christian mother-of-five, whose plight has prompted prayers from the Vatican, has been on death row since she was convicted in 2010 of committing blasphemy during an argument with a Muslim woman over a bowl of water.
Bibi’s lawyer Saif ul Mulook said Thursday religious groups have launched a “fresh offensive” against his client in the wake of the execution of Mumtaz Qadri.
A former police bodyguard, Qadri killed liberal Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer in 2011, angered by his call to reform Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws, as well as his promise to help Bibi.
Qadri’s actions saw him feted as a hero by extremists, and his funeral on Tuesday brought up to 100,000 people into the streets of Rawalpindi, many chanting for Bibi to be hanged.
On Thursday, a statement issued from Islamabad’s Lal Masjid called on the government to execute “the blasphemer Asia Bibi as soon as possible and not bow to international pressure”.
Christian activist Shamoon Gill, a long-time advocate for Bibi, said yesterday that extremist groups are “putting her life in danger”, citing police who warned him to be vigilant this week.
Even if authorities do not succumb to the pressure, religious groups could incite any of Qadri’s thousands of supporters to vigilante action, he warned.
Small protests in cities including Islamabad after Friday prayers also saw Qadri supporters calling for Bibi to be hanged. In Hyderabad, demonstrators broke into the press club and beat up a journalist there, police said yesterday. Read the full story here.

Pope Francis accepts invitation to visit Pakistan.
Pope Francis accepts invitation to visit Pakistan. (AN).
The Pakistani government has invited Pope Francis to visit the country and the pope has accepted, this according to a government press release that also noted that the pontiff prayed for “Pakistan and the victims of terrorism”.
Some Pakistani political leaders spoke to AsiaNews confirming the report, but the bishop of Faisalabad warned that it is not likely to happen this year.
Pakistan's Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Yusuf and the Minister of Ports and Shipping Kamran Michael passed on the invitation during a meeting with the pope in Rome. On that occasion, Francis offered special prayers for Pakistan and its people. Pakistani media welcomed the visit.
Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, a Member of the National Assembly and head of the Pakistan Hindu Council, confirmed the news with AsiaNews.
"We welcome the Catholic spiritual leader,” he said. “This is a good omen for our country. The pope himself has mentioned the news about his visit. The security situation is now favorable”.
Still, Bishop Joseph Arshad of Faisalabad believes that it is hard to say whether Pakistan’s Christian minority will see the Holy Father in person this year.
"Usually a team from the Vatican starts visiting the destination country a year ahead,” said the Bishop Arshad who served for 14 years in the diplomatic service of the Holy See.
“There are lots of arrangements before the arrival of the pontiff. We have not received any written information from Rome", he added.
Still, "If he comes, it will be a great encouragement and show of solidarity to Pakistan where people have been facing terrorism for years." Read the full story here.

'Advanced Islamist Democracy' Turkey threatens Google with ban over hostage image.
'Advanced Islamist Democracy' Turkey threatens Google with ban over hostage image. (BBC).
Turkey threatened to ban Google unless it removed links to images of a prosecutor being held at gunpoint.
The images were taken last week in a siege at an Istanbul courthouse when two gunmen took the prosecutor hostage. All three died during a rescue attempt. The threatened ban on Google was lifted after the search giant removed links to sites hosting the pictures. Turkish authorities briefly cut off several social networks in a bid to stop images circulating.
This is about the freedom of information.
If Google caves in now for the demands of the 'Turkish 'Dictator', you can expect him to throw a fit each time something displeases him on Google.
Appeasement doesn't work with Dictators...especially Islamist ones, next it will be 'blasphmy speech', The 'Armenian Genocide.....or whatever he will come up with to silence the opposition.
Google has a duty to defend the freedom of information....or step out of the business as search engine. Read the full story here.
Update: US urges Turkey to unblock access to social media sites.
State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told Today's Zaman on Monday that her country supports freedom of expression in Turkey and opposes any action that encroaches on the right to free speech.
Google said it is working to restore access. "An independent and unfettered media is an essential element of democratic, open societies," Harf said after the social media bans became known.

'Free Speech Police' - US Government Develops System To Automatically Detect Cyberbullying.
'Free Speech Police' - US Government Develops System To Automatically Detect Cyberbullying. (SP).
A grant of around $120,000 was granted to Rutgers University by the National Science Foundation to create a system that automatically detects hurtful online speech.
“This project aims to define new approaches for automatic detection of cyberbullying by integrating the relevant research in social sciences and computer science,” the grant reads.
According to the NSF, cyberbullying has become a “critical social problem, with over 40% of teenagers in the US having reported being cyberbullied,” leading many to psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders.
The idea is that the system will to search for keywords as well as study the social relationships between teenagers who send and receive mean messages.
The program also aims at “employing social intervention mechanisms” that help prevent future cyberbullying activities.
Data on cyberbullying will also “be made available to the larger research community,” according to the grant. The project will start in July and is set to last for two years, with the goal of improving cyberbullying detectors.
“The project will yield new, comprehensive models and algorithms that can be used for cyberbullying detection in automated settings.” Assistant Professor Vivek K. Singh of Rutgers’ School of Communication and Information, who has done research on Twitter hashtags, will be leading the project.
The Obama administration has made tackling cyberbullying a priority, and so has the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which runs a website to stop cyberbullying that encourages reporting mean online behavior to the police. Hmmmm......Why do i have the distinct feeling this is about limiting free speech, political and Religious speech and not so much about cyber bullying?

Obama Calls for Expansion of Human Rights to Combat Extremism.....or is it 'Blasphemy Laws'?
Obama Calls for Expansion of Human Rights to Combat Extremism.....or is it 'Blasphemy Laws'? (NYT).
WASHINGTON — As he sought to rally the world behind a renewed attack on terrorism, President Obama argued on Thursday that force of arms was not enough and called on all nations to “put an end to the cycle of hate” by expanding human rights, religious tolerance and peaceful dialogue.
But the challenge of his approach was staring him right in the face. His audience of invited guests, putative allies in a fresh international counterterrorism campaign, included representatives from some of the world’s least democratic and most repressive countries.
While Mr. Obama has concluded that radicalism is fueled by political and economic grievance, he has found himself tethered to some of the very international actors most responsible for such grievances, dependent on them for intelligence and cooperation to prevent future attacks.
“There is a very profound conceptual disagreement about whether the best way to counter violent extremism is through human rights and civil society or through an iron fist,” said Marc Lynch, director of the Institute for Middle East Studies at George Washington University. The Obama administration wants “to project the human rights side, but you look at the people they’re working with and fighting alongside, and there’s a lot more to it than that.”
Elisa Massimino, president of the advocacy group Human Rights First, attended Thursday’s meeting and was struck by the juxtaposition of rhetoric and reality: “We’re sitting in that room with representatives of governments that are part of the problem,” she said. “If the president believes what he’s saying, then the actions that these governments are taking are undermining our supposedly shared agenda.”
“That has to stop,” she added, “or we can have summits every month,” but “we’re not going to win.”
“When people spew hatred toward others because of their faith or because they’re immigrants, it feeds into terrorist narratives,” Mr. Obama said. “It feeds a cycle of fear and resentment and a sense of injustice upon which extremists prey. And we can’t allow cycles of suspicion to tear the fabrics of our countries.”*
Yet, as he embraced a message similar to his predecessor’s, Mr. Obama offered less emphasis on force than Mr. Bush was known for. Mr. Obama deplored recent terrorist acts but did not present terrorism as an existential threat as Mr. Bush did, nor did he use some of the phrases Mr. Bush used for Islamic radicalism. Hmmm.......*Somehow i have the feeling he'll use it to crackdown o freespeech in the U.S. Read the full story here.

Why Might Content Be Withheld?
If you have encountered a Tweet or an account that has been marked as withheld, you may be wondering what that means and why that may have happened. With hundreds of millions of Tweets posted every day around the world, our goal is to respect our users' expression, while also taking into consideration applicable local laws.
Many countries, including the United States, have laws that may apply to Tweets and/or Twitter account content. In our continuing effort to make our services available to users everywhere, if we receive a valid and properly scoped request from an authorized entity, it may be necessary to reactively withhold access to certain content in a particular country from time to time.
We have found that transparency is vital to freedom of expression. Upon receipt of requests to withhold content, we will promptly notify affected users unless we believe we are legally prohibited from doing so (for example, if we receive an order under seal).
We also clearly indicate within the product when content has been withheld. And, we have expanded our partnership with Chilling Effects to publish not only DMCA notifications but also requests to withhold content -- unless, similar to our practice of notifying users, we are legally prohibited from doing so.
We strongly believe that the open and free exchange of information has a positive global impact, and that the Tweets must continue to flow. Hmmmm.......'NO Blasphemy', I wonder if Twitter could give one example of a non Islamic country requesting content to be withheld ?Read the full

Collision! Free Speech and Religion from Free To Choose Network on Vimeo.
The new 18 minute documentary program, written and presented by Danish Human Rights Lawyer, Jacob Mchangama, focuses on one of the defining issues of our time; the global battle of values over the relationship between free speech and religious sensitivities. Recent years have seen increasing demands that free speech should be limited to respect religious feelings. In a globalized world this conflict has become explosive as cartoons published in Denmark and videos uploaded in America have led to violent riots from Cairo to Karachi. The outcome of this battle, says Mchangama, will have profound consequences for the ability of people everywhere to freely express themselves and follow their beliefs.

Afghan 'Blasphemy' Case An Early Test For New 'moderate' Government
Afghan 'Blasphemy' Case An Early Test For New 'moderate' Government.(Rfelr).
Afghan authorities have arrested a newspaper’s owner and editor on charges of blasphemy, a move that poses an early test for new President Ashraf Ghani as he seeks to balance international demands for free speech with calls in powerful religious circles for severe punishment.
Ghani, a Western-educated technocrat, has gone to great lengths to court religious leaders by downplaying his foreign pedigree. But he has also called free speech protections a priority, recently allowing a U.S. journalist expelled by his predecessor to return to Afghanistan.
The owner and the editor in chief of the “Afghanistan Press Daily,” an English-language newspaper based in Kabul, were arrested October 24, according to a government official close to the case who spoke to RFE/RL on condition of anonymity. Their names have not been made public.
The newspaper’s offices and publishing house have also been shut down, the official said.
The arrests came after the newspaper published an October 15 op-ed that questioned God’s existence and launched a scathing attack against the Islamic faith. The piece has been widely condemned in the deeply conservative and religious country, where Islam is the state religion.
That anger boiled over into the streets of Kabul on October 24, when dozens of residents staged a protest against the newspaper. Demonstrators demanded that the daily be closed and the author of the op-ed be sentenced to death, warning that the protests would continue if their demands are not met.
The author, who wrote the article under the byline “A.J. Ahwar,” has been identified as Ahmad Javeed Ahwar, a 27-year-old Afghan student believed to be in the Netherlands.
On a Facebook page believed to be his but which has since been deactivated, Ahwar describes himself as a “secular, anti-Taliban activist.” Ahwar also appears to maintain a blog titled “True Pen.”
Ahwar’s op-ed was titled “The Islam Of The Taliban And ISIS,” an acronym referring to the Islamic State militant group that has seized large parts of Syria and Iraq and declared an Islamic caliphate.
In the piece, Ahwar claims that Islamic teachings give militants groups like IS and the Taliban license to kill nonbelievers. “What type of God you are? Are you insane? Can you tolerate an innocent human being to be killed? Are you OK with it? You ‘God’ are not understandable,” he writes.
He goes on to compare the “level of intolerance” in Islam to that of the Nazis.
“The fact is that neither God cares about human, nor does it matter to him if you worship him or not. It is a very old and boring novel now. We are OK without God,” Ahwar concludes.
Sources close to Ahwar’s family say he and his wife are currently seeking asylum in the Netherlands. Social media users have suggested that he wrote the piece to boost his case.
The newspaper has issued an apology and tried to distance itself from Ahwar. In an October 18 apology posted on its website, the newspaper said the article was published due to “a technical mistake.”
“We strongly condemn ideas and comments that were published to use this mistake for their political and individual purposes, we are not related to any political, religious, or any other armed groups,” the statement read.

Pakistan - ‘Blasphemous’ Muslim Assassinated.
Pakistan - ‘Blasphemous’ Muslim Assassinated.(NYT).
Muhammad Shakil Auj, a liberal Muslim scholar accused of blasphemy, was shot dead in Karachi on Thursday.
Auj was accused of the crime by four other professors after giving a speech in the U.S. in 2012 as well as for his liberal views, such as the idea that Muslim women should be allowed to marry non-Muslim men. He was shot in the head and neck by gunmen on a motorbike. Auj had previously complained to police about death threats.
Nasir Lodhi, a senior police official, said that Dr. Auj told the police that four professors at the University of Karachi had accused him of blasphemy for comments he made during that speech. Mr. Lodhi said he could not say where the speech was made, or the nature of the offending comments.
Dr. Auj lodged a criminal complaint against the four professors, who were later arrested by the police. One of them, Dr. Abdul Rasheed, had previously held Dr. Auj’s position as dean of Islamic studies at the university. The four men face trial but are currently free on bail, the police said.
Around the same time, a religious seminary in Karachi issued a fatwa against Dr. Auj, accusing him of blasphemy and calling for his death.
Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan, and in recent years there has been an uptick in vigilante killings related to accusations. Auj had written 15 books about Islam and last month was awarded the presidential medal of distinction in Pakistan for education and research. Read more at New York Times

Twitter posts to be blurred to eliminate ‘malicious content,’ minister says. (HD).
Turkey’s telecommunication authority will pixelate Twitter posts to eliminate “malicious content,” Communications Minister Lütfi Elvan said in a written statement April 17, following talks between the microblogging website’s executives and Turkish officials in Ankara.
“We have reached a consensus to ‘neutralize’ malicious content that is the object of court decisions by pixelating. [Twitter executives] also said the presence of a lawyer representing them would contribute to solving the current issues,” Elvan said in the statement.
He confirmed that Twitter had not made any final decisions regarding other subjects, including the opening of a company office in Turkey.
“During the meeting, the opening of a liaison office in Turkey to ensure closer coordination, as well as the conferring of authority for ‘super tagging’ to Turkey’s telecommunication directorate [TİB] was discussed.
But Twitter executives said they would not immediately decide on these issues and could reconvene after assessing it in a meeting at their headquarters,” Elvan said in the statement.
He also said the meeting reflected the “good will” of both sides. “We have agreed to keep in touch in the future to solve possible problems that can arise quickly and effectively,” he added.
Elvan claimed that Twitter executives had issued assurances that over 200 pieces of content had been deleted and five court orders executed in line with the Turkish authorities’ demands.
He also added that Twitter had prepared a complaint application method to report problematic content, also translated into Turkish, and vowed to be more “meticulous” in the future regarding fake accounts.

Pakistani Christian Couple Given Death Sentence For Blasphemy.(Rferl).
A Christian couple has reportedly been sentenced to death for blasphemy in in Pakistan's Punjab Province.
The couple was arrested in July 2013 after an imam alleged they had sent a text message that he regarded as insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.
A defense lawyer for the couple said they denied being responsible for the message.
Lawyer Nadeem Hassan told the AFP news agency that the text originated from a phone that the couple had lost some time before the incident.
Pakistan has extremely strict laws against defaming Islam, and the death penalty can be imposed for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.
Rights activists say the laws are sometimes abused as a weapon in personal disputes.

Draft adding 'hate crimes' to Turkish criminal code completed.
Draft adding 'hate crimes' to Turkish criminal code completed. (HD).
The government has taken another step toward realizing its promises in the “democracy package” by completing a draft on hate crimes.
The draft, which is set to be sent to Parliament in the upcoming days, will designate hate and prejudice as an aggravation cause for crimes regulated in eight articles of the Turkish Criminal Code (TCK).
The prison sentences for hate or prejudice-driven crimes will be multiplied and “intervention into lifestyles” enters into law as a crime for the first time, according to the draft.
Hate and prejudice crimes are defined as “crimes committed based on someone’s or some group’s language, ethnicity, nationality, skin color, gender, disability condition, political views, philosophical beliefs, religion or sect.”
If one commits a crime such as intentional murder, wounding, torture or threat based one of the above-written characteristics of the victim, the penalty to be imposed on the offender will be made considerably harsher.
Intentional homicide, for instance, will be sentenced to life imprisonment if it was driven by hate or prejudice.
The only exception to penalty increases will be in insult crimes, which will no longer be punished with a jail sentence if the draft passes into law.
The tightening of hate crime penalties was announced by the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as part of the “democracy package,” which was presented as an initiative to extend rights given to Turkey’s disadvantaged minorities. Although most of the unveiled reforms have been hailed, some find the promises insufficient and accuse the government of lacking willingness to target the real issues facing Turkey.

Islamophobia – The Irrational Fear of Questioning Islam.
Islamophobia – The Irrational Fear of Questioning Islam.HT: libertiesalliance.org.By Aeneas.
Introduction
This article will discuss the way the word ‘Islamophobia’ has been used as a political weapon rather than as an honest way of communicating an idea. The main problem arises from the fact that by combining the words ‘Islam’ and ‘phobia’ the resulting term is itself contradictory given current usage. It ignores rational fears that people may have and in the best Stalinist tradition labels those with such fears as being mentally ill.
We will start by showing how the term ‘Islamophobia’ as it is currently used is merely a political tool to shut people up. We will then demonstrate how a word that combines ‘Islam’ and ‘phobia’ could be more appropriately defined. The inclusion of a linguistic component used regularly by psychiatrists will of course be justified in our more logical definition. We will then look at the case of the recent Boston bombing as an example of what happens when Islamophobia as the irrational fear of questioning Islam is not taken into consideration by policymakers who often appear to be its most acute sufferers.
This article will argue that if the world ‘phobia’ is to be used in combination with Islam then it is more appropriate for describing the people who currently wield the term rather than those who are victimised by such people. Islamophobia therefore then defined as ‘the irrational fear of questioning Islam’.
‘Islamophobia’ As A Tool To Shut People Up!
The problem with the term ‘Islamophobia’ is that due to the illogical use to which it has been put, it has managed to elude proper definition. Furthermore, pro-sharia activists and sympathisers prefer to keep the term as nebulous as possible since this assists their agenda. If a rational definition is created then it is more difficult for the term to be used as a tool stifle debate and demonise people.
What has been done with the word ‘Islamophobia’ is part of a trend in which the true meanings of words and language is hollowed out in order to fit the needs of a perverted political agenda. A great many terms have had their meanings blurred to meet the needs of politics rather than communication. The use of the term ‘far right’ to describe anyone who a person disagrees with is an example. How can people defend themselves when they are accused via words and phrases that have lost their original or logical meanings?
Islamophobia has come to be interpreted by many as the irrational fear of Islam or Muslims. The problem arises when its main use is to describe people with quite rational fears. In its report – Islamophobia: A Challenge For Us All (1), the Runnymede Trust recognised problems with the term:
“The word is not ideal, but is recognisably similar to ‘xenophobia’ and ‘europhobia, and is a useful shorthand way of referring to dread or hatred of Islam – and, therefore, to fear or dislike of all or most Muslims.” (p1)The report goes on to define the word as follows:
“The term Islamophobia refers to unfounded hostility towards Islam. It refers also to the practical consequences of such hostility in unfair discrimination against Muslim individuals and communities, and to the exclusion of Muslims from mainstream political and social affairs.” (p4)However, the authors of the report seemed to project their own interpretations of what constituted ‘unfounded’ and ‘unfair’ into the report. The definition thus continued to remain without real meaning. The report went on to use the term in a way that seemed to guide the reader to a predetermined conclusions. It appeared to be used in a way to demonise and delegitimise those who express any negativity towards Islam whether rational or irrational.
A report co-sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)(2) defines an Islamophobe as:
“…an individual who holds a closed-minded view of Islam and promotes prejudice against or hatred of Muslims.”However what is regarded a ‘closed mined’ or ‘prejudiced’ may vary from person to person. The CAIR report tries to be helpful by providing more clarity when it states:
“Questioning Islam or Muslims is not Islamophobia”Nevertheless large numbers of people who have only questioned Islam are still labelled ‘Islamophobes’. An article at Salon.com entitled ‘The 10 most Islamophobic moments in the 2012 elections’(3) illustrates the point. In that article people who have asked awkward questions about Islam are singled out and labelled as Islamophobes! Thus even with the proviso provided by the CAIR sponsored report, the term is still used as a political weapon rather than as a way to describe something specific that warrants being related to mental illness. Currently, those using the term ignore the past conquests of non-Muslim lands, the vanished civilisations such as those of Byzandium and Sassanid Persia, and what Samuel Huntington referred to as Islam’s current “bloody borders” (4). They also ignore the nature of sharia with its hostility to freedom of expression, its second class status of non-Muslims and women, its inhumane punishments, etc. Far from being irrational those who acknowledge these facts do so in the most lucid and serious frames of mind.
An explanation for this illogical term and its baffling usage can be found by looking at its origins. According to journalist and author Claire Berlinski the term “Islamophobia” was in fact specifically invented by a Muslim Brotherhood front organization(5). It was developed to snuff out rational debate, to belittle reasonable concerns, and to impose the sharia prohibition against criticism of Islam onto non-Muslim societies. It was thus set up as an effective tool to assist Islamic proselytization at the expense of other values and belief systems.Rather than those who, for rational reasons, question Islam, it seems that it is those who refuse to question it are the ones that are exhibiting irrational behaviour. It is therefore more appropriate to define Islamophobia as “the irrational fear of questioning Islam”.
Islamophobia As An Actual Phobia
For Islamophobia to be an actual phobia it is necessary to redefine the usage of the term. Those who have abused the English language by creating a term that combines Islam’ and ‘phobia’, while not demonstrating how the new word describes an actual phobia, have lost the right to determine what the word means because clearly they do not respect the idea that meaning should actually be based on the logic of language.
‘Islam’ and ‘phobia’ if combined to create a new word must be true to the meanings of each component word. If there is anything in Islam that is capable of producing rational fear then its combination with phobia is illogical when applied to people who give voice to such rational fears.
However, the rules of language are respected if something relating to Islam creates an irrational fear. Fear of questioning Islam is such an irrational impulse. It would only be rational to fear questioning Islam if something bad were to happen to you if you did so. But we are told repeatedly that Islam is a religion of peace and that there is no compulsion in religion. We are also told by governments in the West that still we enjoy freedom of speech.
Why then does anyone have a rational excuse not to criticise a religion? Since there is only one religion that people seem to have a fear of questioning then we have indeed discovered a logical reason for combining Islam’ and ‘phobia’ into a single word. Thus it would be logical to define the term islamophobia as a condition experienced by those who exhibit an irrational fear of questioning Islam.
Those who fear to practice rigorous analysis because their main priority is adherence to the ideology of political correctness are the ones who are exhibiting the characteristics of a phobia. After all, such behaviour is irrational, illogical, and contrary to the most basic rules of scientific method.
Islamophobia as the pathology that drives people towards irrational behaviour manifests itself in many unusual behaviours. Politicians become willing to ignore the national interest or the will of those who elected them. Countries which claim to be democratic become hostile to the only true democracy in the Middle East. The state as rational actor (one of the most basic assumptions of international relations theory) is transformed into an irrational player on the international stage where the national interest is turned in on itself. Such actors contribute to the instability of the international system and thus pose a grave threat to civilisation. That is why Islamophobia, the fear of questioning Islam, is such an essential topic for debate.
Real Islamophobes under our more logical definition have other significant characteristics. They refuse to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, certain aspects of Islamic doctrine can motivate individuals to carry out the most heinous of acts. It is neither our purpose nor our intention here to demonise Muslims but to seek acknowledgement that some aspects of Islamic teaching may motivate people to attack the non-Muslim world. The vast majority of Muslims are decent hardworking and conscientious individuals who just want to live their lives in peace. However, the aspects of doctrine that can and do inspire violence need to be discussed and analysed in the cool light of day. Only by discussing the issues can natural and justifiable fears be allayed and rational policy making take place.
Islamophobia as the fear of questioning Islam results in many other strange phenomena, some recent examples include:
- Christian schools ban the singing of hymns (6)
- Israeli citizen banned from Israeli territory (7)
- Medical professionals cease following established rules of hygiene (8).
- Relaxed border controls for citizens of Saudi Arabia come into force (9) – the very country from which most of the 9/11 bombers originated which made strict border controls necessary in the first place.
- Inexplicable deportation in the interests of national security being carried out (10).
The Boston Bombing As The Result of Phobia
Arguably the irrational fear of questioning Islam is what allowed the recent Boston bombing to be carried out. An article from The Washington Times makes the point:
“The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s failure to recognize political Islam as a driver of jihadist terrorism is partly to blame for the FBI not identifying one of the Boston Marathon bombers in 2011 as a security risk, according to U.S. officials and private counterterrorism analysts.” (11)Indeed, voices were raised in concern when the Obama Administration revised rules of engagement with regard to monitoring of potential terrorists. An article at the Westminster Institute explains:
“The White House has initiated a secretive review of all federal law enforcement and military counter-terrorism training. This process has already blacklisted several recognized authorities and is expected to forbid future use of terms such as “jihad” or “Islamist terrorism.” Counter-terrorism experts and federal agents are critical of the initiative, which appears to be driven more by concerns about offending Muslims – and Muslim lobbying organizations – than by concern for American national security.” (12)Another article at Front Page Magazine referred to the problem in its title as “Terrorist? Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (13) in reference to the FBI’s “Guiding Principles: Touchstone Document on Training” (14) which states that training must give recognition to the principle:
“…that mere association with organizations that demonstrate both legitimate (advocacy) and illicit (violent extremism) objectives should not automatically result in a determination that the associated individual is acting in furtherance of the organization’s illicit objective(s).”When people are afraid to raise an issue due to the risk of being demonised or disciplined in their work for security organizations like the FBI then that fear is a great motivator for ignoring real world problems. The minds that have created such taboos obviously live on a plane of existence far removed from deafening signals of danger that sound out like sirens in the real world. They are the Islamophobes who have an irrational fear of questioning Islam.
It is the lack of due diligence of those who occupy positions of power while simultaneously suffering from this condition of real Islamophobia who bear responsibility for letting events like the Boston bombing happen. Since their errors were made potentially from a psychiatric condition, then we should not judge them too harshly, it is not their fault. They should be pitied and given all the help and assistance that they need in order to return to good health. However, they are clearly unfit to remain in positions of power and influence.
Conclusion
It is quite clear that the Islamophobia that results from fear of questioning Islam needs to be properly researched and those who suffer from it effectively diagnosed. Perhaps such people should avoid positions in which they would find themselves exposed to the ideas of other people. Fields like politics and the media should therefore really be avoided by such people. In any case effective policy making requires lawmakers to be open to all ideas so that they can make the most appropriate decisions. Unfortunately current policy making seems to be lacking in objective reasoning and the result is illogical legislation and unhappy societies. End Islamophobia now!
Video - Collision! Free Speech and Religion.
