• Troops yet to give Obama full salute.As he winds down one war and escalates another, President Obama is struggling to win over the troops he's leading as commander in chief -- and military advocates say the real test will come as the nation approaches final timelines for withdrawal in Iraq and Afghanistan.Mr. Obama has earned strong reviews from veterans groups, which praise his willingness to listen and his aggressive funding of the Veterans Affairs Department.His progress among members of the military, however, has been slower.A Military Times poll conducted early this year found that 31 percent of subscribers to the publication approved of his job as commander in chief, while 53 percent disapproved."It's frustrating to see both the president and vice president jumping up and down saying, 'Look what we did, look what we did,' when if we actually followed the policies they were calling for ... we would have left early and we would have left in shame," Mr. Hegseth said, noting their opposition to the surge of forces in Iraq.Perhaps because when things go bad it's Pres Bush his fault ,when things go well it's Obama his doing?Read the full story here.

• Four killed as terrorists open fire near Kiryat Arba.Victims, shot while driving, include 2 men, 2 women, one reportedly pregnant; attack comes before Netanyahu and Abbas set to meet in Washington for peace talks.At least four Israelis murdered in West Bank shooting attack Tuesday evening ahead of resumption of peace talks in Washington; security forces, rescue services rush to scene of attack in Gush Etzion area.More than one terrorist apparently took part in the attack, with Channel Two reporting the attackers apparently confirmed the death of the Israeli victims by shooting them at close range, before fleeing the scene."The vehicle was sprayed with dozens of bullets," a paramedic at the scene told Channel 2. "There were numerous shell casings around. • Iran Opposition Leader's House 'Under Siege'.Iranian opposition leader Mehdi Karrubi's website, Sahamnews, says Iranian paramilitaries have surrounded Karrubi's house.The report says "more than 50 members of the Basij [a volunteer force loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei] and plainclothes men that covered their faces surround his house." Plainclothes officers equipped with tear gas, handcuffs, and batons had reportedly arrived at the house late on August 30.Full story here.

• US man nabbed for blasphemy in Indonesia.Indonesian authorities have arrested an American man for blasphemy after he pulled the plug on a loudspeaker at a mosque because it woke him up, police say.Luke Gregory Lloyd, 64, was taken into custody after he disrupted a nightly Koran reading session near his home on Lombok island which was being broadcast over the mosque's loudspeaker during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan."He got angry as the Koranic reading woke him up."Read the full story here.

• State Dept. Aiding Ground Zero Imam’s Book Sales.The State Department has handed out overseas nearly 3,000 copies of an Islamic book written by Ground Zero mosque promoter Feisal Abdul Rauf, an imam who asserts publicly that America has killed more Muslims than al Qaeda.The State official said the department does not consider Feisal's book or similar publications as religious books, so there no issue of violating the Constitution's edict on separation of church and state.Asked what message in the book State endorses, the official said, "The department feels that the book presents readers with a moderate interpretation of Islam and a picture of how Islam is practiced in America that at the time was not commonly known among Egyptians."But,but ,but it's NOT a religious book you said?Read the full fairytale story here

• SC upholds life term for man who killed woman over burqa.Taking a serious view of moral policing over enforcement of burqa turning brutal, the Supreme Court has upheld life term to a man who slashed a woman repeatedly resulting in her death.He offered her money to buy one. She refused to take the money and asked him to mind his own business. This enraged Khan no end. He picked up a knife and slashed and stabbed her repeatedly in front of her minor daughter Farida. • Iranian insults against Bruni 'unacceptable' - France.France has said "insults" in the Iranian media aimed at its first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, are unacceptable.One state-run newspaper denounced her as a prostitute after she publicly criticised Iran for threatening to stone an Iranian woman to death.Iran urged its media not to insult foreign dignitaries.But Kayhan, the paper which made the original comments, went on to call for Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy's death.In a statement, the French foreign ministry said: "We are letting the Iranian authorities know that the insults put out by the daily newspaper Kayhan and taken up by Iranian websites regarding several French personalities, including Mrs Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, were unacceptable."Full story here.

• Assessing America's 'imperial adventure' in Iraq.Unthinkably large amounts of money have been spent here, and yet Iraq has slipped far down the world's rich list.Has the United States benefited? • Why Wall St. Is Deserting Obama.Daniel S. Loeb, the hedge fund manager, was one of Barack Obama’s biggest backers in the 2008 presidential campaign.A registered Democrat, Mr. Loeb has given and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Democrats. Less than a year ago, he was considered to be among the Wall Street elite still close enough to the White House to be invited to a speech in Lower Manhattan, where President Obama outlined the need for a financial regulatory overhaul.So it came as quite a surprise on Friday, when Mr. Loeb sent a letter to his investors that sounded as if he were preparing to join Glenn Beck in Washington over the weekend.Read the full story here.

• The Gadsden flag.This year, Mr. McDonel began flying a yellow “Don’t Tread on Me” flag on his roof in this unincorporated area just outside Phoenix. The historic banner — which dates to 1775, when it was hoisted aboard ships during the initial days of the Revolutionary War — has been adopted by the Tea Party movement. But Mr. McDonel said that he had unfurled the flag for its historical significance and nothing else. As the flag becomes more popular — it was on prominent display on the Washington Mall last weekend during a rally organized by the conservative commentator Glenn Beck — more such disputes are expected. Already, a Colorado homeowner flying the same flag is locked in a standoff with his homeowners’ association. And in Connecticut, a group of retired Marines is challenging the Capitol Police’s decision blocking the Gadsden flag from being flown over the State Capitol.Read the full story here.
