Maybe they will capture some Israelis as happened in Tehran with the American embassy those days in 1979,” Kedar told Newsmax by telephone from Israel. “That is the bad scenario.”The most hopeful scenario involves a Muslim Brotherhood preoccupied with guaranteeing the livelihood of 85 million Egyptians and not wanting to engage in extremist acts or policies that would endanger Egypt’s alliances or its economy, Dr. Kedar said.“But whatever happens, the Muslim Brotherhood will have much to say about everything in Egypt no matter who is the leader – whether it’s [Vice president] Gen. • U.S. Pressure on Mubarak Opens a Rift With Arab Allies.WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama's attempt to abruptly push aside Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in favor of a transition government has sparked a rift with key Arab allies Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, which fear the U.S. is opening the door for Islamist groups to gain influence and destabilize the region.Vying to influence the outcome of events, Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. have sent public and private messages of solidarity to Mr. Mubarak and his vice president, longtime intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, diplomats said. The messages amount to support for the president and Mr. Suleiman to oversee the transition and to ensure that Islamists can't fill any possible power vacuum.The support from Arab states has provided a measure of comfort to Mr. Mubarak, who announced he wouldn't take part in September's election. It may in part explain why the Egyptian president rebuffed Mr. Obama's call for an immediate transition that includes the opposition.The backlash shows how the turmoil in Egypt is rapidly reshaping U.S. policy in the region. In deciding to set itself against Mr. Mubarak, a U.S. ally for decades, the U.S. is now facing the disquiet of other friendly Arab governments, who have long provided support for American policy goals. Meanwhile, Islamists in the region, including Hamas and Hezbollah, believe they are on the ascent as U.S. allies falter.Such a scenario was one that defenders of the Middle East's status quo warned was possible, and shows how Mr. Obama's options were all, in some sense, unpalatable. • Berlusconi calls Mubarak wise man, urges continuity.Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Friday praised Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak as a wise man and said he should remain in place during the country's transition to democracy. • HT:BigGovernment.Obama Administration Blocking 103 Gulf Drilling Permits.As oil prices continue to climb, a backlog of more than 100 offshore drilling plans for the Gulf of Mexico are awaiting approval from the Obama administration, according to federal data.The information reveals that the Obama administration — not the oil industry — is the culprit for the slowdown of drilling activity in the Gulf. The Gulf of Mexico accounts for more than 25 percent of domestic oil production.“These new findings prove that BOEMRE cannot claim it isn’t receiving job-creating plans from oil exploration and production companies,” said Gregory Rusovich, chairman of the Business Council of Greater New Orleans and the River Region. “The plans are there. Until BOEMRE reviews the 103 plans awaiting approval, our economy’s stability remains in jeopardy.”Every two weeks Greater New Orleans Inc. releases a Gulf Permit Index based on publicly available federal data. Thursday’s index revealed an 88 percent decline in deepwater permits compared to the historical average. Not a single deepwater permit was approved in January.Even shallow-water permits have taken a hit in the Gulf, despite not being subject to the administration’s moratorium last year. Only two new shallow-water permits were approved by BOEMRE in January. Naturally, all those getting these big waivers were big donors to Obama’s campaign.At this point we are up to over 700 Obamacare waivers given to his union pals and other campaign donors and now the EPA has announced the first waiver for the new greenhouse gas rules that really haven’t even been implemented exactly yet.Timothy Carney reports that General Electric has been the lucky, lucky recipient of a waiver for Obama’s EPA rules. Yes, very lucky, indeed.This particular waiver was for a 600-megawatt power plant project in the San Joaquin Valley in California being built by General Electric. The project would have been nearly killed by the EPA’s new rules so the Obama administration decided to allow this project to be “grandfathered in” to the new greenhouse gases and air pollution restrictions.Now, can we recall just who Obama made a part of his administration? Why, yes, it is General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt. Those who are gravely oppressed are surely the ones who suffer the most. Madadgaar Helpline, Pakistan’s first helpline for women and children, organised a seminar to share 10 years thought-provoking data on violence against women and children on Tuesday evening. Zia Ahmad Awan, founder LHRLA, said, “Domestic violence is a horrible crime, which is being committed at a larger scale in an unjust society of ours. We still have a feudal mindset that helps propagate ideas of dominance over others and in making others feel helpless towards us.” Sharing the data, he said; “Violence against women is predominant in Pakistan. Despite the growing recognition of violence against women as a public and human right concern as it poses obstacle in development, domestic violence continues to over shadow our lives.”Awan said that there were horrifying incidents of atrocities that men commit in this part of the world. As reported 75,039 cases of violence against women have been reported in the last 9 years while 13,972 women have been murdered. About 17,107 women have been subjected to torture and 452 women were raped and then murdered. Large attributes of violence are as such: lack of access to education and opportunity and low social status in communities are linked to violence against women. Violence by a close relative is one of the most common form of violence against women. So why is this not a federal hate crime?The Four Loko made him do it.Ahmed Mohamed, who was sentenced Friday to nearly six years in prison for the attack last year on a West Seattle teen, claimed the caffeine-infused energy beer he drank for the first time the night of the assault was partially to blame.Mohamed, 22, pleaded guilty last month to first-degree robbery with a deadly weapon and malicious harassment, the state’s hate-crime statute, for the attack on Shane McClellan on May 25.When the West Seattle teen, who turned 17 on Friday, stopped, Mohamed and Baquiring attacked him.For more than four hours, according to court documents, the two men punched McClellan, urinated on him, beat him with his own belt and burned him with cigarettes. • So much for respect: Two Muslim councillors refused to clap war hero.When a young Afghanistan war hero appeared before a city council, it seemed the right thing to give him a standing ovation.Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, 26, had been awarded the George Cross for throwing himself on a Taliban hand grenade to save his comrades.He survived only because his backpack took the force of the blast.But to the horror of the rest of the council chamber, while most leapt to their feet to applaud him, two Muslim councillors remained firmly in their seats.Salma Yaqoob and Mohammed Ishtiaq, from the Respect party, insist that their refusal to clap the Royal Marine was a point of principle.But following the meeting at Birmingham City Council on Tuesday night, fellow councillors said they had grossly disrespected the soldier.Conservative Cllr John Lines said: ‘They should be ashamed of themselves.‘This was not the time or place to stage an anti-war protest – this man risked his life for his comrades.‘I was happy to give this hero a standing ovation and I have invited him to be guest of honour when we open new houses for ex-military personnel later this year.’Peter Douglas Osborn, another Conservative councillor, added: ‘As far as I am concerned it is no longer the Respect party, but the disrespect party.’Hmmmm.....How long before the same thing happens in the USA?Read the full story here.

Just about any activity that you can think of other than sitting completely still in utter silence in your own home is tightly regulated by government. This is not what our founding fathers intended.There are so many laws, rules and regulations out there today that nobody can possibly know them all, much less keep them all. Unfortunately, politics tends to keep attracting new crops of control freaks that are eager to impose even more ridiculous laws on all of us.We have become so tightly controlled and so tightly restrained that there is very little room for any real freedom in America today. Do our politicians even know what they mean when they give speeches about "liberty" and "freedom" anymore? It is almost as if those two words have completely lost their meaning.The United States is supposed to be free, but instead we are being transformed into just another control freak society. His brilliant, incisive assessment of our nation’s national security, written right before the civil unrest broke out in Egypt, is even more ominous now that we’re facing a potential Muslim Brotherhood takeover in that country.[W]hat struck me as the most worrisome aspect of the speech was not so much what Obama said, but what he didn’t say. In a sixty-two minute speech he waited until the last few minutes to even mention foreign policy and national security and when he did, he seemed to find the subject quite boring and mundane.While members of our armed forces are fighting and dying in Afghanistan and elsewhere every day to defeat the terrorist enemies who want to destroy us, the whole thing was just briefly and casually mentioned by our Commander in Chief. He did thank our troops for their sacrifices, while at the same time reassuring our enemies in Afghanistan that we will began withdrawing our troops later this year. I’m sure the applause among the Taliban and al-Qaida leaders who were watching the speech was much more enthusiastic than any applause by our members of Congress.The bottom line is that our country is being rendered defenseless by the people who are charged in the Constitution to protect our nation and its people. As a result, the violence on our borders will increase and our enemies will be encouraged to increase their efforts to attack us around the world and on our own soil. • White House, Egypt Discuss Plan for Mubarak’s Exit.WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is discussing with Egyptian officials a proposal for President Hosni Mubarak to resign immediately, turning over power to a transitional government headed by Vice President Omar Suleiman with the support of the Egyptian military, administration officials and Arab diplomats said Thursday.Even though Mr. Mubarak has balked, so far, at leaving now, officials from both governments are continuing talks about a plan in which Mr. Suleiman, backed by Lt. Gen. Sami Enan, chief of the Egyptian armed forces, and Field Marshal Mohamed Tantawi, the defense minister, would immediately begin a process of constitutional reform. • European Commission proposes complete passenger data system to fight terrorism.BRUSSELS: The European Commission on Wednesday presented a proposal for a European Union (EU) Passenger Name Record (PNR) Directive to fight serious crime and terrorism.The proposal obliges air carriers to provide EU Member States with data on passengers entering or departing from the EU, whilst guaranteeing a high level of protection of privacy and personal data.The Commission lays down common rules for EU Member States to set up national PNR systems that carry data consisting of information provided by passengers and collected by carriers during the reservation and booking of the tickets and when checking in on flights.In practice many law enforcement authorities in Member States already collect PNR data on a case-by-case or on a flight-by-flight basis, but the proposal would allow for a more systematic use of the data for all relevant flights and across all Member States, avoiding uneven levels of protection of passengers' personal data, as well as security gaps, increased costs, and legal uncertainty for air carriers and passengers.The Commission is proposing that air carriers transfer data on passengers on international flights held in the carriers' reservation systems to a dedicated unit in the Member State of arrival or departure. Member States will analyze and retain the data for the purpose of preventing, detecting, investigating and prosecuting serious crime and terrorist offenses.It also proposes strong protection of privacy and personal data, as PNR data may not be used for any purpose except fighting serious crime and terrorist offenses. • HT:Ansamed.MidEast :Gaza censorship the hunt is on for Anti -Islam books.GAZA, FEBRUARY 2 - Censorship has been introduced into the Gaza Strip controlled by the Hamas Islamic radicals in relation to the books of two of the most appreciated lay writers of Arab literature in recent years: Egyptian Alaa Al-Aswani, author of the best selling book 'Yacoubian building', and Syrian Haidar Haidar, both of whom in the past had already been targeted by the wrath of Mullahs around the world.A complaint was recently signed by activists of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (Pchr), one of the most accredited local organisations working to protect civil rights.According to the Phcr, the hunt started a few days ago with raids in bookshops and libraries and the seizure of the mentioned books. The list includes among others Al-Aswani's 'Chicago' and one of Haidar best known works translated into English under the title 'Banquet for Seaweed'.A spokesperson for the Hamas police forces interviewed by ANSA stated that he was unaware of the situation and did not know of any directives on the matter. But the wave of seizures was confirmed in at least three of the largest bookshops located in Gaza City, including the one annexed to the headquarters of the Al-Azhar University. The undesired books were cleared out by scores of public officers working for the General investigation office who showed up with warrants and sales bans printed on Ministry of the Interior letterhead. The General investigation office is in charge of the local 'vice squad' which in the Gaza Strip acts as the custodian of Islamic moral values.The charges against the targeted books are without appeal, since they represent blaspheme texts that ''violate the Shaaria'', as stated in the warrant mentioned in the Pchr complaint against the event which asks for the ''immediate withdrawal'' of the alleged censorship measure.However this is not the first episode of the sort to take place in Gaza. Born as the Palestinian version of those Muslim Brothers who in neighbouring Egypt are behind the popular uprising that is hanging over Mubarak in these days, to date Hamas has cautiously played its radical stance in a society that has inherited less weak lay traits compared to most of the Arab world. • Shell Cancels Arctic Oil Drilling Plans for 2011.Shell Oil has canceled its plans to drill for oil in the Beaufort Sea north of Alaska in 2011, but will now set its sights on the summer of 2012. The company has run into repeated regulatory hurdles in its attempts to explore for oil in America's slice of the Arctic Ocean. Most recently, in late December 2010, the Environmental Appeals Board (EAB) sent air quality permits granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) back to regulators for revision. Pete Slaiby, the VP of Shell Alaska, cited "tremendous uncertainty"—and frustration—during a press conference in Anchorage to announce the decision. The company has been seeking the required permits for the past five years.The EAB request cited two issues. First, at what point should the EPA start counting total emissions (when the drill ship arrives onsite, when it's ready to start drilling, or at some other point)? Secondly, what yardstick should the agency use to consider nitrogen dioxide emissions and their potential impact on local communities? Shell has committed to burning only ultra-low sulfur diesel on the project, and has installed emissions-reducing equipment on the Noble Discover to minimize its impact on the arctic airshed. Despite such measures, the proposal has been controversial: Opponents have cited potential impacts on wildlife as well as the difficulty of managing any oil spill that occurred in the region.Shell says that quick action by regulators will be needed if drilling is to proceed in 2012. The company is the biggest leaseholder in the region, and considers offshore Alaska a "world-class energy resource," according to Slaiby.
