• HT:IMRA.IDF update - School bus hit by anti-tank missile.Two civilians were injured, one critically and another moderately, when an anti-tank missile was fired at their school bus in the Sa'ad juncture on Thursday (Apr. 7). Immediately following the attack a helicopter flew the two to a hospital for further treatment. According to the Red Cross, at approximately 15:05 authorities were notified of the event and ambulances sent to the scene.The Home Front Command instructed residents in communities surrounding the Gaza Strip to enter protected areas as a precaution to possible rocket-fire in the next few hours. Around the time of the bus's attack, terrorists fired 16 mortar shells from the Gaza Strip which landed in the western Negev region.Israeli President, Shimon Peres, said in response to the attacks that, "This is another incident which proves the Gaza Strip has turned into a terrorist zone. No one would give up the safety of his country's citiznes and Israel stands firm on the right to defend itself. Hundereds of thousands of mothers and children in southern Israel cannot sleep at night as a result of rocket-fire from the Gaza Strip."Following the attack, Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak, was quoted saying he "told the IDF to implement all means necessary in order to respond to the bus attack in the Sa'ad juncture." The Minister of Defense added that he places responsibilty for every attack from the Gaza Strip on Hamas.During the course of Wednesday night (Apr. 6), an IAF aircraft targeted three smuggling tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip and a terror tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip. Direct hits were confirmed.The IDF will not allow communities of southern Israel to continue living under constant threat. Any attempt to terrorize those or any of Israel’s citizens will be met with a response. • Iron Dome intercepts first rocket.Ashkelon residents report seeing Grad explode in midair as dozens of rockets fired at south, meanwhile Hamas says Israel taking advantage of Goldstone's regret over Gaza war report to bomb Strip.Residents in Ashkelon reported Thursday seeing Israel's new Iron Dome defense system intercept a Grad rocket fired towards the southern city from the Gaza Strip.Eyewitnesses told Ynet they saw the rocket explode in midair and realized that the system had intercepted its first rocket. Moshe Ben Hemo, a resident of Ashkelon, said, "I was in the street and I heard a strange sound, like someone pushing the gas pedal of a car. Then I saw the rocket fly through the air and explode. Immediately I realized that it was Iron Dome, that's what has been said here." He added that the rocket alert had not been set off. "The rocket was apparently supposed to explode in Ashkelon. In any case I'm glad the system works," he said. Ashkelon's Iron Dome system was set up just Monday, with soldiers running extensive tests to make sure it was functioning properly. Another system was set up earlier in Beersheba. The defense establishment decided to place the system earlier than planned due to the recent escalation of violence in the south. It has already been set up in Haifa, and in the coming weeks officials plan to put it in place in central Israel as well.Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said the Palestinian fire, which included dozens of rockets and mortar shells after the attack on the bus, derives from a desire to protect the people of Gaza and "pressure the occupation to stop its crimes".He added that the IDF was also trying to ignite violence "in order to thwart inter-Palestinian truce efforts" between Hamas and rival Fatah. • Bomb explodes near California synagogue.Police close Santa Monica streets after blast, which occurred in parking lot at 6:45 am local time.A suspicious object, apparently a pipe bomb, exploded Thursday in the parking lot of a synagogue in Santa Monica, California, various news agencies reported. The synagogue also functions as a Chabad center. Authorities had no immediate word on injuries or damage. The bomb exploded at 17th and Broadway, and police shut off the entrance to the area on all four sides. Authorities are currently investigating whether it was a hate crime against Jews. LA police and sappers were immediately alerted to the scene, as well as FBI agents. Some 100 people were asked to vacate the area. It remains unclear whether there were worshippers in the synagogue when the bomb exploded, at 6:45 am local time. Read the full story here.

• Iran: Israel's nuclear program is destabilizing the entire Mideast.Speaking at meeting of UN Disarmament Commission, Iran envoy says Tehran supports a nuclear-free Mideast, criticizing the lack of supervision of Israel's nuclear facilities.Israel's nuclear program is endangering the entire Middle East, an Iranian official said on Wednesday, adding that Iran had been advocating a nuclear-free region since before 1979's Islamic Revolution. Speaking at the United Nation's Annual Conference of the Disarmament Commission, Iran's envoy to the UN Mohammad Khaza’ie was quoted by Iran's official IRNA news agency as saying that Israel's non-membership in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) was destabilizing the region.The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on Tehran for refusing to freeze its uranium enrichment program, which Western powers suspect is aimed at producing a nuclear weapon. Iran denies Israeli and Western allegations that it is enriching uranium to produce atomic arms and maintains that its program is for peaceful energy needs. Speaking last month on Iran's contentious nuclear program, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the world must make clear that Iran would face "credible military action" if sanctions do not shut down Tehran's disputed nuclear program.Netanyahu, in an interview on CNN, said it was apparent Iran was pursuing its nuclear ambitions despite international sanctions and was getting significantly closer to obtaining nuclear arms. "They have enriched enough material now almost for three nuclear bombs," he said. "They still have to re-enrich it again but that is what they are doing. "The only thing that will work is if Iran knew that if sanctions fail there will be a credible military option." Asked what would constitute a credible military action, Netanyahu said: "It means action that will knock out their nuclear facility." • WikiLeaks: Israel's Peace Now urged U.S. to force evacuations of West Bank outposts.Leaked U.S. diplomatic cable shows both U.S. administration and Defense Ministry use the Israeli left-wing NGO to continuously track illegal West Bank settlement construction.Israeli left-wing non-government organization Peace Now has urged the U.S. to pressure Israel into evacuating West Bank outposts, according to an American diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks, adding that the group regularly updated both Washington and the Defense Ministry on ongoing settlement construction. A 2006 U.S. diplomatic cable quoted Peace Now head Yariv Oppenheimer as telling U.S. embassy officials that Israel may "evacuate a few outposts to show the U.S. that it is doing something, but in exchange it is trying to co-opt the settlers by retroactively approving some outposts and giving them a freer hand in building in the West Bank." Referring to the Israeli government's failure to execute demolition orders for several illegal outposts, an unnamed Peace Now official is quoted as saying in 2009 that he or she was "hopeful that [U.S.] pressure on [Israel] will result in implementation of these new orders." The documents also reveal that the Defense Ministry used Peace Now's services to track West Bank settlement construction, with Eitan Broshi, an aide to Defense Minister Ehud Barak, quoted in 2008 as being "eager" to meet Peace Now representatives to discuss the issue. A Peace Now representative reportedly told U.S. embassy officials that Broshi "did not appear to be aware of the recent construction in some settlements and questioned the legality of construction in some others." Frank Wolf Questions Their Fundraising Letter Sent to Gaddafi.A letter from the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, to Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi has added fuel to criticisms of the controversial group and what its critics say are some dubious fundraising tactics.In the letter, obtained by Fox News and dated Sept. 23, 2009, CAIR executive director Nihad Awad asks Qaddafi for funding for a project called the Muslim Peace Foundation. Qaddafi was in New York attending the United Nations General Assembly.Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., cited the letter Wednesday at a House Appropriations sub-committee hearing, during which Wolf asked FBI Director Robert Mueller about the FBI’s relationship with CAIR. "Therefore, the most important thing is to represent Israel on an international level, with real information."Mashkevich plans to found an international, professional news station as a response to unreliable reports on Israel. • Pakistan.Asia Bibi gravely ill, fears for her life, after three months in solitary isolation.Lahore (AsiaNews) - Asia Bibi is sick, in solitary confinement, and there are growing concerns for her life. The Christian sentenced to death for blasphemy on false evidence is sick with chicken pox, because of the appallingly unhygienic conditions she is being kept in. The complaint comes from Haroon Barket Masih, president of the Masih Foundation, who today issued a statement: "Asia Bibi was diagnosed with chicken pox, she has been kept in solitary confinement for more than three months. We have expressed concern about her health, because she spends24 hours a day locked in the cell. She needs medical care, hygienic and healthy conditions. She fell ill with chickenpox because of the dirty environment, and being unable to clean her room or bed sheets on which she sleeps. Despite her ill health she spends her time fasting and praying for everyone, she neglects her health and prays for everyone else. She is concerned about the current situation in Pakistan. We are trying to arrange a medical examination, and to ensure acceptable hygienic conditions. Until now she has had no medical care. " Masih also declared: "Recently, Mothers Day was celebrated in Europe, we all celebrated Mother’s Day, people sent cards and postcards, but who remembered this sick woman praying and fasting in her cell? He was referring to Doku Umarov — the man behind the Moscow metro and airport bombings, among other crimes.He received death threats and when he reported them to police, he was prosecuted for hate speech crimes. Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard reportedly claimed AIDS was an "intrinsic justice" for homosexuals.Activists have targeted a Roman Catholic Archbishop in Belgium with a pie to the face -- again, again, again and again. Andre-Joseph Leonard has repeatedly been on the end of the pie-ing, a comedy staple, after he made comments claiming AIDS was "a sort of intrinsic justice" for gay people.A prankster named "the Glooper" posted clips online showing the leader of the Catholic Church in Belgium getting hit in the face by custard pies four times while speaking at the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve near Brussels Tuesday."The Glooper" is also said to have dished out a pie-ing to French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Microsoft founder Bill Gates in the past. This time around, Leonard was targeted over his comments on gay people -- which included comparing homosexuality to an eating disorder.
