Before he became a national political figure, he sat on the board of a Chicago-based foundation that doled out at least nine grants totaling nearly $2.7 million to groups that advocated the opposite positions.
The foundation funded legal scholarship advancing the theory that the Second Amendment does not protect individual gun owners’ rights, as well as two groups that advocated handgun bans. And it paid to support a book called “Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns.”

Says He Continues to Oppose Concealed Carry
Obama explained the motivation for his vote:
"I didn't find that [vote] surprising. I mean, I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry," Obama said. "This was a narrow exception in an exceptional circumstance where a retired police officer might find himself vulnerable as a consequence of the work he had previously done--and had been trained extensively in the proper use of firearms."

Says It's "a scandal" Bush Didn't Renew "Assault Weapons" Ban
OBAMA: "Let’s be honest. Mr. Keyes does not believe in common gun control measures like the assault weapons bill. Mr. Keyes does not believe in any limits from what I can tell with respect to the possession of guns, including assault weapons that have only one purpose, to kill people. I think it is a scandal that this president did not authorize a renewal of the assault weapons ban."

Votes to Ban Common Rifle Ammunition
Voted against a 2005 law prohibiting frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers stemming from acts committed by others using their products. Calls for permanently reinstating the failed Clinton "assault weapons" ban. Voted for 2005 amendment that would ban virtually all rifle ammunition, if it can be used in a handgun and is capable of penetrating soft body armor typically worn by law enforcement. Since all rifle ammunition will pierce soft armor worn by law enforcement, this amendment would have effectively banned all rifle ammunition used by hunters and target shooters.

Votes Against John Roberts for Supreme Court Justice
Obama has said he would not have nominated Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. It was Justice Scalia who wrote the majority opinion in D.C. v. Heller, which declared that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms, and that D.C.’s handgun ban is unconstitutional. Justice Thomas joined in that opinion. As a member of the U.S. Senate, Mr. Obama also voted against confirming Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, both of whom joined Justice Scalia’s majority opinion in Heller.

Favors a Ban On Standard-Capacity Ammunition Magazines
"The second area which may be fought by the NRA, but I think has to be looked at is the availability of 19-round clips. I’m a strong believer in the rights of hunters and sportsmen to have firearms. I’m a believer in homeowners having a firearms to protect their home and their family. It’s hard for me to find a rationale for a 19-clip semi-automatic. I said at a forum earlier this week, ‘If you need 19 rounds to shoot a deer, you probably shouldn’t be hunting’ and so that I think is something that we should be able to have a reasonable conversation about."

Despite large controversy, President-elect Barrack Obama nominated Eric Holder for the position of U.S. Attorney General on December 1, 2008. During the vetting process there was a great deal of pushback from many congressmen and gun rights advocates because of his questionable past. However, Obama awarded Holder the position regardless.
While working under the Clinton Administration in 1999, Holder worked to release 16 members of the violent Armed Forces of National Liberation 'terrorists', as deemed by the F.B.I.

Attorney General Eric Holder: Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban
The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holdersaid today. "As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.
During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider.
"I think closing the gun show loophole, the banning of cop-killer bullets and I also think that making the assault weapons ban permanent, would be something that would be permitted under Heller," Holder said, referring to the Supreme Court ruling in Washington, D.C. v. Heller, which asserted the Second Amendment as an individual's right to own a weapon.
