Bayou Corne sinkhole expansion is accelerating......now 'covers' 12 Acres.

Bayou Corne sinkhole expansion is accelerating......now 'covers' 12 Acres.(Examiner).Officials monitoring the Assumption parish sinkhole say that when the massive slurry "burped" again Sunday morning, nearly one acre of the Cajun land environment fell into it, meaning that it has now consumed approximately twelve acres of the parish.

"Nearly an acre of land fell off into the west side of the sinkhole, according to Assumption OEP director John Boudreaux," WBRZ reports about the ongoing Bayou Corne sinkhole disaster that began nine months ago.

With the monster's latest belch, Boudreaux said that more debris and hydrocarbons appeared at the surface of the collapsing area.

The new growth on Sunday follows a week of increased seismic activity in the area and a warning about the possibility of increased instability.

Officials have also advised that crews are closing part of Highway 70 (between Highway 69 and Lee Drive) in the disaster area in 15-minute increments, beginning at 9 P.M. Sunday for 3D seismic scanning.

The work is expected to be complete around 3 A.M.

The sinkhole is above the collapsing 1-mile by 3-mile collapsing Napoleonville Salt Dome. The dome is under Grand Bayou and parts of Bayou Corne communities.

Explosive methane is lurching beneath the Bayou Corne community. It has been detected as far away as two miles from the sinkhole.Read the full story here, more here.
