Last night shooting occurred between Iranian border guards and group of armed people in the direction of Saravan city located in the south-east of the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan. The group was trying to enter the country from Pakistan. 14 Iranian border guards were killed at shooting range, Iranian news agency İRNA reported with the reference to a source who wished to remain anonymous.
According to the information, 5 Iranian border police officers were also killed in the skirmish. There is no information yet about whether the armed people were members of Jundullah group ("Soldiers of Allah") which is at war with Iran, or they were smugglers.
Jundullah group - Baluch Sunni organization - was established in 2003 and acts both in Iranian and in neighboring Pakistani Baluchestan. Iranian authorities accuse Jundullah of the massacres, armed robberies, kidnappings, bombings and sabotage. According to Tehran, Jundullah is connected with the special services of the U.S. and UK.
The last major terrorist attack, responsibility for which was taken by the organization, was an explosion in southeastern Iran in October 2009, killing nearly 50 people.
The leader of Jundullah, Abdolmalek Rigi, was executed in Iran in late June 20010. He was arrested on February 23, 2010 on board of the plane, flying from Dubai to Kyrgyzstan.More info here.
