Moscow calls on Turkey to prove Russia supplied arms to Kurdistan Workers’ Party
Moscow calls on Turkey to prove Russia supplied arms to Kurdistan Workers’ Party. (Tass).
Turkey should prove its claims that Moscow allegedly supplies weapons to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, Russian president’s special envoy for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told journalists on Monday.
"When somebody alleges anything, he must present the evidence," he said, answering a corresponding question.
Earlier on Monday, Turkish President Tayyip Recep Erdogan accused Moscow of attempts to supply air defense systems to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party that is outlawed in Turkey.
According to the diplomat, Turkey has no legal grounds to take part in an antiterrorist operation in Syria jointly with the United States.
"On what grounds?" he said, answering a corresponding question. "It’s interference in the affairs of sovereign states."

Turkey's Erdogan blasts Europe's silence on execution of Bangladesh war criminal's execution.
Turkey's Erdogan blasts Europe's silence on execution of Bangladesh war criminal's execution. (ET).
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday lashed out at Europe’s silence over the execution of a veteran Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Bangladesh, accusing the West of “double standards.”
“If you are against political executions, why did you remain silent to the execution of Motiur Rahman Nizami who was martyred a couple of days ago,” Erdogan said in a televised speech in Istanbul.
“Have you heard anything from Europe? … No. Isn’t it called double standards?” Erdogan said.
Nizami, leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged at a Dhaka jail late Tuesday. He was accused of ordering the killing of intellectuals during the 1971 conflict.
The 73-year-old former government minister was the fifth and the most senior opposition figure executed since the secular government in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation set up a controversial war crimes tribunal in 2010.
The 1971 conflict, one of the bloodiest in world history, led to the creation of an independent Bangladesh from what was then East Pakistan.
Prosecutors said Nizami was responsible for setting up the pro-Pakistani Al-Badr militia, which killed top writers, doctors and journalists in the most gruesome chapter of the war. Hmmm.......A man is known by the company he keeps or defends..... Armenian Genocide

ISIS, oil & Turkey: Russian news film trove of jihadist docs detailing illegal trade with Ankara.
ISIS, oil & Turkey: RT films trove of jihadist docs detailing illegal trade with Ankara.(RT).
An RT Documentary crew filming in northern Syria has seen
Islamic State (IS, ISIS/ISIL) documents abandoned by retreating
terrorists and found by the Kurds that, along with captured IS recruits,
provide a stunning insight into the alleged Turkey-IS oil trade links.
Turkey, which has been actively engaged in the Syrian war since the outset, has repeatedly denied claims that it is aiding IS. However, while Ankara insists that it is the jihadist group’s sworn enemy, facts on the ground often tell a different story.
RT has spoken to several witnesses who were involved in Islamic State’s trade activities and accessed the terror group’s documents, which provide insight into how and where foreign militants enter Syria to join the terrorist “state.”
The RT Documentary team did most of its filming in the town of Shaddadi, located in the Syrian province Hasakah, which has been partly overrun by IS jihadists.
RT filmed Kurdish soldiers walking around what used to be the homes of IS fighters and examining piles documents that had been left behind.
Some of the files seized at the scene turned out to be detailed invoices used by IS to calculate daily revenues from their oil fields and refineries, as well as the amount of oil extracted there. All the documents had Islamic State’s symbol at the top.
The files showed that “IS has kept very professional records of their oil business,” said the author of the new RT Documentary on Islamic State filmed in northern Syria, who chose to remain anonymous for security reasons.
RT spoke to local residents who had been forced to work in the IS oil industry about what it was like working at the terrorist-controlled oil refinery and where the extracted oil was sold.
The locals attested that “the extracted oil was delivered to an oil refinery, where it was converted into gasoline, gas and other petroleum products. Then the refined product was sold,” the RT documentary’s author said. “Then intermediaries from Raqqa and Allepo arrived to pick up the oil and often mentioned Turkey.”
Important information revealing the connection between IS and Turkey was provided by a Turkish militant previously captured by the Kurds. The IS recruit said on camera that the terrorist group does, in fact, sell oil to Turkey.
“Without even us asking the fighter directly, he admitted that the reason why it was so easy for him to cross the Turkish border and join IS was, in part, due to the fact that Turkey also benefited. When asked how, he said that Turkey gets something out of it – something such as oil.”Turkey’s logistical support for extremist fighters trying to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government, or at least its non-interference with their cross-border movements, has been widely reported, but little has been said about the ideological support coming from Turkish soil.
Among the documents left behind by the terrorists at an IS-run hospital, RT’s crew discovered an Islamist propaganda leaflet printed in Arabic titled “How to wage a perfect battle against the criminal Assad’s regime,” which described ways to combat the Syrian government.
Curiously, the brochure was printed in Turkey, with the cover openly displaying the postal address and phone number of an Istanbul printing house, supplemented by Facebook contacts.
Turkey benefits from Islamic State because the terrorist group provides it with cheap oil and is fighting both Syria’s government and Kurdish population.
This is an opinion shared by both Kurds and their mortal enemies from the jihadist organization. The IS documents obtained by RT may provide additional evidence revealing the dirty game being played by the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Syria.Read and see the full story here.

House Foreign Affairs Committee votes to directly arm Kurdish forces in Iraq and Syria against ISIS.
House Foreign Affairs Committee votes to directly arm Kurdish forces in Iraq and Syria against ISIS. (TheHill).
The House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday passed a bipartisan bill by unanimous voice vote that would authorize the U.S. to directly arm and train the Kurdish peshmerga in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
"Kurdish forces in northern Iraq have been some of our closest partners in the fight against the ISIS," said Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) at a hearing to mark up the bill.
Royce said current law requiring all U.S. military assistance for the Kurds to flow through Baghdad, which is controlled by Shiites, has led to delays in providing Kurdish forces the weapons and training they need to fight ISIS.
"This legislation removes those roadblocks," Royce said. Authorized weapons would include anti-tank missiles, armored vehicles and long-range artillery.
The measure, while authorizing and not requiring the president to provide arms to the Kurds, is controversial since it authorizes the U.S. to sidestep the government in Baghdad, which opposes direct arming of the Kurds since it could undermine its control and authority. Read the full story here.

Syrian citizen-journalist and friend both found Beheaded in Turkey.
Syrian citizen-journalist and friend both found Beheaded in Turkey. (ReporterswithoutBorders).
Reporters Without Borders calls on the Turkish government to do everything possible to identify those responsible for murdering Syrian citizen-journalist Ibrahim Abd al-Qader in the southeastern city of Sanliurfa, where he had lived as a refugee for the past year.
A contributor to the “Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently” (RBSS) information network and the Ayn al-Watan website, the 20-year-old Abd al-Qader was found beheaded today at the home of a friend, Fares Hammadi, who had also been decapitated.
— الرقة تذبح بصمت (@Raqqa_SL) October 30, 2015
RBSS said it thought Islamic State was responsible for the double murder but no claim has so far been posted online. The Turkish media said seven suspects have been arrested
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to Ibrahim Abd al-Qader’s family and colleagues,” said Johann Bihr, the head of the Reporters Without Borders Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk.
“We urge the Turkish authorities to do whatever is needed to bring his murderers to justice and to closely investigate the possibility that he was killed in connection with his reporting. The authorities must protect journalists who have sought refuge in Turkey.”
The RBSS network was created in April 2014 to document Islamic State’s atrocities in Raqqa, a city in northern Syria that the jihadi group has controlled since the start of 2014.
After quickly establishing itself as one of the most reliable sources of information about what is happening in Raqqa, RBSS this year received an International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Its contributors are under permanent threat from IS, which has declared them to be “enemies of God.” Hmmmm......I wouldn't hold my breath on Turkey solving any ISIS Related crime. PYD Political adviser: "Kurdish autonomy should be a model to end Syrian conflict."
PYD Political adviser: "Kurdish autonomy should be a model to end Syrian conflict." HT: Al_Ahram.
Russian airstrikes are a step forward in the war against terrorism, says Sihanouk Dibo, political advisor to the Democratic Union Party (PYD), a leading Syrian Kurdish opposition party and member of the Syrian opposition group in Cairo.
Dibo believes that negotiations with the Bashar Al-Assad regime are inevitable if a solution to the Syrian conflict is to be reached.
"We welcome any intervention that would help fighting terrorism," says Dibo, who refutes the claim that Russia has mostly attacked rebels fighting the Syrian government, not the Islamic State (IS) group.
"We know it because we are on the ground and our information is more accurate over here. Take the city of Al-Qamishli, for instance. I can assure you that IS is there and it suffered casualties, thanks to the Russian strikes."
Dibo also explains that many US backed rebels have surrendered to Al-Nusra Front. "And Al-Nusra Front is affiliated to Al-Qaeda, therefore it is a terrorist group."
The PYD supports the Russian intervention, the same way they back Western coalition operations in Syria. "We are in favour of any operation that would fight extremist groups," he says.
"Russian intervention does not contradict a negotiated solution to the Syrian conflict for the simple reason that there is no solution other than a political one. Russian airstrikes only help to get rid of terrorist groups. This should be done in parallel with the Cairo process," he said.
According to Dibo, one of the main obstacles to finding a solution is the division of the opposition. Instead of uniting, external and internal groups are divided.
"The biggest lie that was spread in the last years is the false claim that the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), based in Istanbul, is the legitimate opposition, representing all Syrians. This is far from the truth," he says.
The coalition holds very different opinions from the majority of the Syrian people it claims to represent, Dibo says.
"It considers Al-Nusra Front as a peaceful opposition group while in fact the latter had committed — like IS — major crimes against Syrian civilians."
He also argues the SNC fails to understand the concept of negotiations, imposing preconditions where in fact the whole purpose of negotiations is to fill the gap between two different views .
Another problem is that "they (the SNC) also want to exclude from future talks major regional actors, such as Iran, whose presence is a must for a long term solution. On the other hand, they blindly stand behind Turkey, which has recently imposed its own currency in certain areas of Syria and established security zones, which is a sort of occupation of Syrian territory. Turkey has also been supporting extremist groups such as the Sultan Murad Brigades," he argues.(On Friday 25 Oct.2013 the Sultan Murat brigades attacked the Wartan Monestary).
In his view, the military intervention of Turkey has been very harmful to prospects of ending the conflict. "Turkey is now part of the Western coalition. Except that out of 550 airstrikes it launched, 547 were directed against Turkish Kurds and only three against IS."
Syrian Kurds, like many other opposition groups involved in the Cairo process, believe that negotiations with the Assad regime are inevitable. "Syrians are in a very critical situation and cannot afford to impose their own conditions. There are no other options but negotiating with the Syrian regime. Who else should we negociate with?" Dibo asks.
One thing the opposition agrees on is that a future Syria will not include Bashar Al-Assad — a future that Syrian Kurds have already been preparing. "We should use our own experience to reach a solution to the conflict," he says. By "experience," he means Kurdish self-determination.
In the last few years, the Kurds have established in northern syria the "Renaissance project," as they call it, which is de facto autonomy on the administrative, defence and security levels.
Yet neighbouring countries, especially Turkey, which has a sizeable Kurdish minority, fear that this would lead to an independent Kurdish state in northern Syria that would eventually reach into Turkish territory, as the PYD is considered the Syrian branch of the PKK, the main Turkish opposition group that has been fighting Ankara for years.
But Dibo claims that those fears are not justified and that the PYD and PKK only share the same ideology, democratic principles and aspirations for "decentralised government."
Dibo also refutes Turkish accusations according to which the YPG (People's Protection Units) — the Kurdish militia — has committed war crimes against Arab civilians in the Syrian areas they control, to create an exclusively Kurdish region. "This is another lie spread by our opponents who reject the idea of self-determination," he says.
"We find within the YPG more than 25 percent of Arabs, five percent of Assyrians, who also are holding political and administrative positions. If we wanted independence, we wouldn't be taking part in the opposition group calling for political negotiations. In a future Syrian state, we intend to participate in the Syrian army." says Dibo.
"We just believe that the Kurdish autonomous experience should be used as a roadmap for a future political solution to a Syrian conflict. This might be the only way to reach longterm peace in the country." Hmmm.....There can only be peace when Erdo and his 'Admin' are no longer in Power and Qatar and the Saudi's are muzzled. Did Turkish army use chemical weapons on Kurds in Dersim?
Did Turkish army use chemical weapons on Kurds in Dersim? (ANF).
There is suspicion that Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) used chemical weapons in the most recent airstrikes conducted in the rural areas of Dersim's Ovacık district for two days.
People's Defense Forces (HSM) Headquarters Command announced two days ago that HPG Command Council Member Baran Dersim (İsmail Aydemir) and guerrillas Erdal Reşo (Abdurrahman Akçin), Cîlo Kop (Resul Balıkçı) and Botan Gevda (Sedat Arslan) fell a martyr in the mentioned airstrikes. Yet, bodies of three among them are currently held at Elazığ Forensic Medicine Institution, and one remains missing. Families of four guerrillas went to Ovacık to identify the bodies but they couldn't recognize them.
'BODIES ARE UNRECOGNIZABLE'
HDP Dersim deputy Alican Öncü who also saw the bodies of fallen guerrillas told that; “Families couldn't recognize the bodies which were completely burned and sort of turned into coal. One of the bodies didn't have the head, and one other was entirely burned apart from a small part on the chin.”
'FAMILIES DEMAND DETAILED POST-MORTEM'
Remarking that families couldn't obtain the results of the post-mortem performed on the bodies in Ovacık, Öncü said; “Families gave blood sample for a DNA test. The bodies have been sent to Elazığ Forensic Medicine Institution but the identification will be made only after the Eid Al-Adha due to the festive holiday. Families also demand a detailed post-mortem report in order for it to become clear whether their children were killed by chemical weapons or not.”
Besides the situation of the corpses, the details Öncü provided about the airstrikes also strengthen the doubts over the use of chemical weapons prohibited by international rules.
'TSK USED FIRE FIGHTING AIRCRAFT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 40 YEARS'
According to the information provided by Öncü, Turkish army used fire fighting aircraft following the bombardment which lasted two days. This happened for the first time during the last 40 years of war in Kurdistan.
HDP MP Öncü said that; “Hundreds of bombardments were conducted on mountains and villages during the past 40 years but state forces never performed fire fighting in any of these. This has been the first time when the fire in the area was extinguished by Turkish aircraft in the middle of the night, without even waiting for the morning hours.”
To the question why it happened so, Öncü answered; “I don't know but this first ever fire fighting efforts by the state supports our suspects. They might have extinguished the fire to lessen the effect of chemical weapons.”
'FAMILIES SUFFERING A SECOND TORTURE'
Öncü pointed out that besides the bodies held at Elazığ Forensic Medicine Institution, there are also some other bodies currently held at Malatya Forensic Medicine Institution which have yet to be identified in the same way as DNA tests haven't been concluded yet. “The extension of the procedures, which are normally finalized within two days, makes the families suffer a second torture” he stated.
Stressing that the Palace waging this war recognizes no morals, rules of battle and even the traditions of the state itself, HDP deputy for Dersim said; “The cruelty of the state has reached a point of not recognizing its own state traditions even. Bodies of fallen guerrillas are being subject to torture and their families are not being allowed to take and bury them. As we witnessed in Cizre, mothers held the bodies of their children in fridges in their houses. There is no such an instance around the world. They are doing a similar thing in Dersim now.” Hmmmm......It would not be the furst time #Turkish 'herrenvolk' uses chemical weapons on the Kurdish population.See: Confirmed: Turkey used chemical weapons against Kurds More here.

Aleppo already de facto a 'protectorate' of 'Neo Ottoman conqueror' Turkey?
Aleppo already de facto a 'protectorate' of 'Islamist' Turkey? (Aawsat).
Beirut, Asharq Al-Awsat—Syrian activists and economists have proposed a new initiative to use the Turkish lira as the main currency in liberated areas of Aleppo, following recent gains made by rebels in Syria’s largest city.
The initiative calls for Syrians owning more than 10,000 Syrian pounds to change the excess home currency into Turkish lira to be used in rebel-controlled areas of the city.
The Association of Syrian Economists said in a recently held conference that they and Syrian activists were putting forward the plan in “order to put economic pressure on the regime of [Syrian President] Bashar Al-Assad in the sense that [a move such as this] would help speed up its downfall.”
Proponents of the plan say it will help ordinary people obtain access to basic goods in light of the lira’s stability against the US dollar, compared with the Syrian pound, which is now equivalent to almost 200 dollars. Before the outbreak of the Syrian conflict the country’s currency had for a number of years stabilized at around 50 dollars per pound.
The Association said it is putting forward the plan to the interim Syrian government and the country’s internationally recognized opposition group the Syrian National Coalition, which are both currently based in Turkey.
A source from the Syrian interim government told Asharq Al-Awsat they had been informed of the proposal but that no moves had yet been made to adopt it.
“A group of activists told us of this proposal and we have informed them that it still needs to evolve and undergo evaluation,” the source said.
“The [interim] government . . . is still studying this proposal, especially since it behooves us to also discuss it with Turkish officials, because it firstly concerns them.”
Meanwhile, Ahmed Ramadan, a member of the Syrian National Coalition’s Politburo, welcomed the proposal and called on the Coalition to adopt it.
“This idea to replace the Syrian currency with Turkish lira was previously put forward by the interim government’s Finance Ministry, but it was not implemented,” Ramadan told Asharq Al-Awsat.
“Even though the Coalition has still not looked into the current proposal properly, I personally absolutely support it.” Hmmmm.....When will the U.N. change the border lines of Syria in favor of 'Gross Turkey'?

Turkish Presidential elections: only 20 Million out of 76, 5 Million Turks voted for Erdogan.
Turkish Presidential elections only 22 Million out of 76, 5 Million Turks voted for Erdogan. (MFS).
Turkey ended 2013 with a population of 76,484,000 people, which represents an increasea of 856,616 people compared to 2012.
The female population is greater, with 38,135,579 women, representing 49.86% of the total, compared to 36,797,062 or 48.11% men.
Age structure:
0-14 years: 25.9% (male 10,682,900/female 10,201,965)
15-24 years: 17% (male 6,979,955/female 6,703,689)
25-54 years: 42.7% (male 17,375,544/female 17,097,927)
55-64 years: 7.9% (male 3,189,731/female 3,169,450)
65 years and over: 6.6% (male 2,422,983/female 2,870,341) (2013 est.)
Hmmmm....So if Erdogan is elected by 52 % of the votes and we agree on 70% voter turnout, considering the 2012 voting age numbers lets say increased to 55 Million we would get:0-14 years: 25.9% (male 10,682,900/female 10,201,965)
15-24 years: 17% (male 6,979,955/female 6,703,689)
25-54 years: 42.7% (male 17,375,544/female 17,097,927)
55-64 years: 7.9% (male 3,189,731/female 3,169,450)
65 years and over: 6.6% (male 2,422,983/female 2,870,341) (2013 est.)
70 % voter turnout of 55 Million : 38,5 Million.
52 of the votes of 38,5 Million, roughly : 20 Million votes.
So That means Erdogan was elected President (For life) by 38 percent of the Turkish total population.
Update seems my calculation wasn't that far of : Less then 21 million voters voted for Erdogan

Pres. Obama says won't let Islamic militants create caliphate
Pres. Obama says won't let Islamic militants create caliphate. (TAZ).
U.S. President Barack Obama said he was willing to consider broader use of military strikes in Iraq to beat back Islamist militants, but Iraqi political leaders must first figure out a way to work with each other, the New York Times reported. In a wide-ranging interview conducted on Friday, Obama also expressed regrets over not doing more to help Libya, pessimism about prospects for Middle East peace, concerns that Russia could invade Ukraine, and frustration that fellow economic superpower China has not stepped up to help, Reuters reported.
Obama on Thursday authorized the U.S. military to conduct targeted strikes on Islamic State fighters in northern Iraq, a limited operation designed to prevent what he called a potential "genocide" of a religious sect and also protect American officials working in the country.
But in the interview with Times columnist Thomas Friedman, Obama said the United States may eventually do more to help Iraq repel the militant group, which seeks to control its own state.
"We're not going to let them create some caliphate through Syria and Iraq," Obama said in the interview, excerpts of which the Times posted on its website late on Friday.
"But we can only do that if we know that we have got partners on the ground who are capable of filling the void," he said.
He praised officials from Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region for being "functional" and "tolerant of other sects and religions" and said the United States wanted to help.
"But, more broadly, what I've indicated is that I don't want to be in the business of being the Iraqi air force," he said.Obama has faced growing criticism for being too reluctant to intervene in thorny foreign policy issues which have piled up under his watch.
He quipped that he sometimes wished the United States was more like China: a superpower that no one expects to intervene."They are free riders, and they've been free riders for the last 30 years, and it's worked really well for them," Obama said.He told the Times that he regretted his government did not do more to help rebuild Libya after NATO-led air strikes in 2011 that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. The nation has been wracked by fighting and chaos.
"So that's a lesson that I now apply every time I ask the question, 'Should we intervene militarily?'" Obama said. "Do we have an answer the day after?"
Obama's administration has also been trying to encourage ceasefires in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinians, and applying economic sanctions against Russia to try to get Moscow to stop supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine.
He expressed doubts about whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas could come to the kind of longer term peace deal that former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was able to broker, and that former Israeli prime ministers Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Rabin accepted.
"In some ways Bibi's too strong, in some ways Abbas is too weak to bring them together and make the kind of bold decisions that a Sadat or a Begin or a Rabin were willing to make," Obama said.
Obama said he feared that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not back down from eastern Ukraine, where Moscow has supported separatists.
"He could invade," Obama said.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), who now refer to themselves as the Islamic State (IS), has threatened to "liberate" Istanbul, while accusing Turkey of cutting off the flow of the Euphrates River, drying up northern Syria, including Raqqa, "the capital of the Islamic State."
"I pray to God that the apostate [Turkish] government reconsiders its decisions because if they don't reconsider it now, we'll reconsider it for them by liberating Istanbul," ISIL's "press officer" Abu Mosa told Vice News in Raqqa.
When reporter Medyan Dairieh asked if this is a threat, Abu Mosa answered: "Yes, it is a clear threat. If they don't open [the Atatürk dam in Turkey that diverts the water], we'll unblock it from Istanbul."Read the full story here.

In Erdogan's Turkey even Newborns can vote: "Total number of ballots to be printed 73,849,080". (HD).
Turkey’s top election body has declared an Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) interim report on the country’s state of affairs in the run-up to the presidential election as “groundless.”
“It is not possible to understand the groundless report [by the OSCE] which was prepared in a way to sway public opinion to think that the ‘YSK [Supreme Election Board] is arbitrarily printing ballots,’ [in other words] saying that there is no legislation even though legal provisions are clear,” YSK President Sadi Güven said in a written statement released late Aug. 7.
Güven’s statement came as a response to claims listed in an interim report by the Limited Election Observation Mission (LEOM), which was deployed by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) on July 31.
In its report, the OSCE delegation stated that the ballot order of the presidential candidates was selected by the YSK at lottery and that it had already started printing ballots.
“The YSK informed the OSCE/ODIHR LEOM that the total number of ballots to be printed was 73,849,080. The YSK’s decision on the number of ballots to be issued lacks a clear legal basis,” the delegation said.
The report recalled that four parliamentary parties and groups who received the highest number of votes in the last general election have the right to appoint non-voting representatives to the YSK.
“The delegation didn’t believe us, even though the YSK members introduced [the HDP representative] and showed them a copy of the original assignment letter, [the OSCE delegation still] questioned the matter. While this behavior is both offending and unacceptable, it is also not understood why it was additionally noted in the interim report,” said Güven. Another Islamist Dictator rising: ""Tayyip, we will go to our deaths for you!" (Spiegel).
Snipers are in position on the roofs while helicopters circle above the square, where a crowd of people are waving flags depicting a crescent moon. Thousands have come from Istanbul, Ankara and the Black Sea to the small city of Yozgat in Central Anatolia. They have waited for hours in the heat to cheer for their leader. They chant his name as his campaign's theme song booms from the loudspeakers: "Man of the People, Recep Tayyip Erdogan."
When the Turkish prime minister walks onto the stage, women in headscarves break out in tears and bearded men fall to their knees.
Erdogan raises his hands and shouts: "Are we brothers and sisters? Are we Turks?" The crowd responds: "Tayyip, we will go to our deaths for you!" It's campaign season in Turkey, but that barely explains the frenzy. Erdogan has described his campaign as a war of liberation. His voters, the ones he hopes will make him president, are his troops.
In Istanbul's Kasimpasa harbor district, doors are unhinged and the homeless sniff glue under bridges. This is where Erdogan grew up and where he has his roots. The adolescent Erdogan was a "Black Turk," an outsider, whose father Ahmet made a living shipping goods across the Bosporus.
The young Erdogan learned to assert himself at an early age. He sold sesame pastries on the street, and was reportedly quick to lash out when someone tried to cheat him. Old people in the neighborhood remember him as an angry youth. "Tayyip never shied away from a fight," says one man. "He used to climb on to the roof of the mosque and recite verses from the Koran."
Erdogan was a striker with Erokspor, the local football club. He attended a religious Imam Hatip school, studied business administration and worked as a bookkeeper in a sausage factory before joining the Islamist Refah Party, where he met his wife Emine.
As president, Erdogan will also cripple the last control mechanisms, warns the president of the Turkish Bar Association, Metin Feyzioglu. "There are no longer any limits to his despotism."
The duties of the Turkish president are largely limited to ceremonial matters today, but Erdogan plans to expand his powers. And once he is president, there will no longer be anyone to veto new laws. As president, Erdogan will no longer be answerable to anyone, says Feyzioglu, and his successor in the office of prime minister will be a puppet at best.
The constitutional court, which has repeatedly prevented Erdogan from becoming excessively high-handed, will likely be eliminated as a corrective body, because the president appoints the judges.
For these reasons, Istanbul law professor Bertan Tokuzlu believes that the vote on Aug. 10 will be the "most important election in Turkey's more recent history."
There will be no turning back if Erdogan becomes president, he notes. "Then he will transform Turkey into a one-man state, once and for all."
Erdogan himself makes no secret of how he intends to govern in the future. In a television interview in late July, he announced his intention to introduce a presidential system, and he cited China and Russia as models. Government affairs, Erdogan said, are obstructed by "oligarchs in the bureaucracy," and "our path is interrupted by hurdles." In the Erdogan state, there will no longer be any hurdles.Hmmm....I've always considered Erdogan more dangerous than Ahmadinejad, time only proves me right. Dunja Mijatović, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media expressed concern today over the targeting of prominent Turkish journalist Amberin Zaman by the highest authorities in Turkey.
”I am alarmed by the latest example of intimidation of and threats towards journalists in Turkey,” Mijatović said.
”Critical ideas are indispensable elements of democratic debates, and they need to be safeguarded and not attacked by the authorities.”
On 7 August, during a campaign rally in the southern province of Malatya, the Prime Minister of Turkey directly and severely criticized journalist Amberin Zaman, which resulted in a smear campaign against her, including on social media.
”The widespread smear campaign against Amberin Zaman threatens her safety,” the Representative said.
Zaman has worked as Turkey correspondent of The Economist for 15 years and is a columnist for the Turkish newspaper Taraf.
The Prime Minister’s remarks follow Zaman’s comments made on CNN Türk on 5 August.
Representative Miajtović has been calling for increased freedom of expression in Turkey since she took office in 2010. Her earlier statements can be found at www.osce.org/fom.
