Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday lashed out at Europe’s silence over the execution of a veteran Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Bangladesh, accusing the West of “double standards.”

“If you are against political executions, why did you remain silent to the execution of Motiur Rahman Nizami who was martyred a couple of days ago,” Erdogan said in a televised speech in Istanbul.


“Have you heard anything from Europe? … No. Isn’t it called double standards?” Erdogan said.

Nizami, leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged at a Dhaka jail late Tuesday. He was accused of ordering the killing of intellectuals during the 1971 conflict.

The 73-year-old former government minister was the fifth and the most senior opposition figure executed since the secular government in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation set up a controversial war crimes tribunal in 2010.

The 1971 conflict, one of the bloodiest in world history, led to the creation of an independent Bangladesh from what was then East Pakistan.

UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights alleged 16 people seeking sanctuary in Turkey have been shot over the past four months.

They said those killed included three children.

Other examples compiled by the Syrian Observatory include the alleged killings of a man and his child at Ras al-Ain, at the eastern end of the Turkish-Syrian border.

In the west of the country, two refugees were reportedly shot dead at Guvveci on 5 March.

Klaas Dijkhoff released the data in a letter amid an increasingly heated debate over immigration, stoked by an increase in arrivals from war zones across the Middle East.

He was responding to questions from members of parliament, many of whom have been calling on the government to start sending back migrants who are suspected of atrocities, or break Dutch laws.

Turkish forces have detained 23 suspected ISIS extremists along with 21 children who were trying to illegally cross over from Syria, the army said Sunday.

The suspects, whose nationalities were not disclosed, were captured Saturday as they tried enter the Elbeyli district of Turkey's southern Kilis province.

"Twenty-three people suspected of being Daesh (ISIS) terror group members, together with 21 children, were caught," said the army in a statement, without giving any other details.

Turkey has over the last year been told by its Western allies to urgently step up efforts to stop the flow of extremists across its borders to and from Syria.

The army reported Saturday that it had Friday also captured six ISIS suspects, along with eight children, who were trying to cross illegally from Syria to Turkey in the same area. Hmmm........No word if those children are actually 'Caliphate cubs'? A two-minute video has surfaced showing more 70 Indonesian-speaking men in military fatigues and armed with rifles preparing for a field assignment with the Islamic State (IS) group.

In the video, the men seem to be in good spirits, and refer to themselves as the Ikhwan Nusantara, or the brothers of the archipelago – a reference to Indonesia, which is the world's largest archipelagic nation.

"Hoist the (IS) flag. We are all making the preparation to reach plentiful and eternal goodness," said the narrator, who later said they were in Jabal Khalifa, Syria.

The videographer also introduced some of the men as he walked around, giving their names.

The clip is the latest evidence for the existence of the Katibah Nusantara Lid Daulah Islamiyyah, or Malay Archipelago unit for IS. For analysts, it is proof that a significant number of Indonesians have joined the terrorist group.

Indonesian authorities estimate that there could be as many as 500 Indonesians in Syria fighting for the Islamic State group. Other sources believe the number could be higher. Counter-terrorism officials have verified 159 Indonesians as IS militants.

Indonesia, a country of some 250 million people, is the world’s most populous Muslim country. For years, it has promoted a moderate version of Islam.

In the recent past, the authorities have been able to eradicate some dangerous jihadi networks, like al Qaeda-affiliated Jamaah Islamiah.

However, the video is important. For Taufik Andrie, executive director of the Institute of International Peace Building in Jakarta, it constitutes "strategic propaganda” because “It shows the Indonesians having a place, a force there [i.e. Syria]. It is part of a concerted effort by the extremists to build a new generation of militants, according to interviews with residents who fled or still live under Daesh in Syria and Iraq. The group is recruiting teens and children using gifts, threats, and brainwashing. Boys have been turned into executioners and suicide bombers. A Daesh video issued last week showed a boy beheading a Syrian soldier under an adult militant’s supervision. Last month, a video showed 25 children unflinchingly shooting 25 captured Syrian soldiers in the head.

In schools and mosques, militants infuse children with extremist doctrine, often turning them against their own parents. Fighters in the street befriend children with toys. Daesh training camps churn out the Ashbal, Arabic for “lion cubs,” child fighters for the “caliphate” that Daesh declared across its territory.

Recruit: Joining Daesh a certain death sentence “I am terribly worried about future generations,” said Abu Hafs Naqshabandi, a Syrian shaikh who runs religion classes for refugees in the Turkish city of Sanliurfa to counter Daesh ideology.

The indoctrination mainly targets Sunni children. In Daesh-held towns, militants show young people videos at street booths. They hold outdoor events for children, distributing soft drinks and candy - and propaganda.

They tell adults, “We have given up on you, we care about the new generation,” said an anti-Daesh activist who fled the Syrian city of Raqqa, the caliphate’s de facto capital. He spoke on condition of anonymity to preserve the safety of relatives under Daesh rule.

With the Yazidis, whom Daesh considers heretics ripe for slaughter, the group sought to take another community’s youth, erase their past and replace it with radicalism.

Yahya, his little brother, their mother and hundreds of Yazidis were captured when Daesh seized the Iraqi town of Sulagh in August. They were taken to Raqqa, where the brothers and other Yazidi boys aged 8 to 15 were put in the Farouq training camp. They were given Muslim Arabic names to replace their Kurdish names. Yahya asked that his real name not be used for his and his family’s safety.

He spent nearly five months there, training 8 to 10 hours a day, including exercises, weapons drills and Quran studies. They told him Yazidis are “dirty” and should be killed, he said. They showed him how to shoot someone execution-style, from close range. The boys hit each other in some exercises. Yahya punched his 10-year-old brother, knocking out a tooth.

The trainer “said if I didn’t do it, he’d shoot me,” he said. “They ... told us it would make us tougher. They beat us everywhere.”

Several of the nongovernmental organizations that fed the United National Human Rights Council with information leading to itsallegations of Israeli and Hamas war crimes during Operation Protective Edge last summer have shown a lack of financial accountability and therefore transparency, a prominent Israeli watchdog reported on Tuesday.

Specifically, NGO Monitor indicated three NGOs that do not “publish financial information, reflecting a lack of transparency and accountability.”

Among those groups reported by NGO Monitor are the Gaza-based Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, which was cited 21 times in the U.N. findings, including providing photographs of a home bombed by Israeli jets.

Another of the groups was Al-Haq, a Palestinian rights group that calls for the Palestinian ‘Right of Return’ to be implemented for the refugees of the 1948 Israeli War of Independence and their descendants, which discussed rolling power outages in Gaza throughout the war, and “24 strikes involving ambulances and medical personnel.”

The third was Al-Dameer, which provides legal assistance to Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention centers. The group was cited 14 times, and discussed what it called “unabated” settler violence in the West Bank against Palestinians and their property during the crisis last summer. A report says the Takfiri ISIL terrorist group is sending its militants into Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

The state-funded BBC on Sunday quoted a Libyan government adviser, Abdul Basit Haroun, as saying that ISIL uses migrant boats to send its members into Europe “as the European police don’t know who is from ISIL and who is a normal refugee.”

Haroun added that the ISIL militants control some boat owners and permit them to continue their operations only after the latter pay the extremists 50 percent of their income from each ship.

The Libyan official suggested that the ISIL sends its members to Europe for future attacks in the continent.

The report comes against the backdrop of warnings by European authorities that foreign militants operating in countries like Syria will use their combat skills against their countries upon returning home.

According to an October 2014 report by the UN Security Council, 15,000 foreigners have flocked to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside the ISIL or other terrorist groups.

In an earlier development, a report released by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime said that terrorist groups, including ISIL, are making huge sums of money out of the human trafficking trade, which smuggles boatloads of people from the Libyan coast across the Mediterranean into Europe.

The report estimates that the illegal trade generates between $255 million and $323 million each year.

“The value of this trade dwarfs any existing trafficking and smuggling businesses in the region, and has particularly strengthened groups with a terrorist agenda, including the ISIL,” the report said.

The ISIL terrorists, who are mainly operating in Syria and Iraq, have set up strongholds in some coastal areas of the North African country of Libya.
