• Official in Abbas’ Fatah Party: “Our Goal Has Never Been Peace, The Goal is Palestine”“Our goal has never been peace,” says a Fatah official in a PA TV panel. “Peace is a means; the goal is Palestine” – meaning the conquest of Israel.Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), directed by Itamar Marcus, reports on a panel discussion on a television program of the Fatah organization broadcast this past week. Headed by Mahmoud Abbas, Fatah is considered the more moderate wing of the Palestinian Authority, compared with Hamas.The panel discussion shows that in actuality, Fatah is no less firm than Hamas in seeking the goal of Israel’s destruction. • New York Muslims say bigotry behind cemetery order.Members of a small Muslim community in rural upstate New York say the uproar over a planned mosque near Ground Zero is behind attempts by local officials to shut down the community’s graveyard and remove the two bodies buried there.Town Supervisor Bob McCarthy said the cemetery is illegal and bigotry had nothing to do with the board decision. “These people just came up and buried bodies on the land,” McCarthy said. “You have to have permits. • Turkey, China conduct joint air maneuvers.Turkish and Chinese militaries recently conducted a joint aerial exercise in central Anatolia, the first such exercise involving the air forces of NATO member Turkey and China.The joint exercise was part of Turkey’s Anatolian Eagle maneuvers, which have so far been carried out jointly with US, other NATO countries and Israel. They took place sometime this month in the central Anatolian province of Konya, where Anatolian Eagle maneuvers traditionally take place, Today’s Zaman has learned. • Thousands of Nigerian women 'found in Mali slave camps'.Nigerian girls are being forced to work as prostitutes in Mali "slave camps", say officials in Nigeria.The girls, many of them under age, have often been promised jobs in Europe but ended up in brothels, said the government's anti-trafficking agency.The brothels are run by older Nigerian women who prevent them from leaving and take all their earnings.The agency said it was working with Malian police to free the girls and help them return to Nigeria.They said there were hundreds of brothels, each housing up to 200 girls, run by Nigerian "madams" who force them to work against their will and take their earnings."We are talking of thousands and thousands of girls," Simon Egede, Executive Secretary of Naptip, told a news conference in Abuja."We are talking of certainly between 20,000 and about 40,000," he said, but did not give details of how the figure had been reached.In a statement, Mr Egede said girls were "held in bondage for the purposes of forced sexual exploitation and servitude or slavery-like practices"."The madams control their freedom of movement, where they work, when they work and what they receive," he said.The trade is centred around the capital Bamako and large cities, but the most notorious brothels are in the mining towns of Kayes and Mopti, where the sex workers live in "near slavery condition", said Naptip.Mali is 90 % Islamic!Islamic law does not forbid slavery.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

• EU commission chief fights anti-Semitism.In Jewish New Year letter to Rabbinical Centre of Europe, Jose Manuel Barroso states he is determined to condemning any forms of anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination on basis of belief.In a Jewish New Year greeting to the Rabbinical Centre of Europe (RCE), European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso stated recently that Europeans need to condemn anti-Semitism.“For us all, fellow Europeans, remembrance means to vigorously condemn any forms of anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination on the basis of belief,” Barroso wrote in the letter to Rabbi Levi Matusof of behalf of the Rabbinical Centre of Europe.“The fact that last year showed the greatest number of anti-Semitic attacks since the end of the Holocaust shows that we are going in the wrong direction and we call on the European Commission to address the growing number of attacks against Jewish sites, institutions and individuals.” Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

There has been much discussion lately of the legal questions surrounding the Obama administration’s plan to assassinate U.S. citizen Anwar al-Awlaki, an al-Qaeda goon, Islamist propagandist, and general bum. The Christian Science Monitor has a pretty good discussion here, arguing that the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials established a “gold standard” for governments’ conduct, and makes a due-process argument as well. Glenn Greenwald remarks on the lawsuit brought by Awlaki’s father and the state-secret aspects of the case here.For what it’s worth, the Nuremberg template seems inappropriate to me; Awlaki is not a agent of a government or a member of a regular army, and there is no reason to charge him with “war crimes” when he could be charged with regular old crimes. • Native Indians and cigarettes: the tension is building.Native Indians and cigarettes: the tension is building.On August 27th, I spoke about the plan of Governor Patterson to enforce cigarette tax laws on Native American Indian tribes. In that discussion, it was noted that NYC Mayor Bloomberg stated that "the governor should act like a cowboy with a shotgun and enforce the state tax law.”This is in addition to my understanding that, according to what the Gov. was proposing, a violation of the 4th Amendment was under way. Which says nothing of the potential for violence that occured when similar plans were proposed when Gov. Cuomo in 1992 and Gov. Pataki in 1997 tried to enact a similar law.On Sept 1st, the courts halted the tax grab that Gov. Patterson envisioned filling State coffers.
