Egypt rejects licenses to eight US NGOs, among them "The Carter Center"
Egypt rejects licenses to eight US NGOs, among them "The Carter Center".(BM).CAIRO: The Egyptian Ministry of Insurance and Social Affairs rejected granting eight US non-governmental organizations (NGOs) a license to operate in Egypt.
An official source in the ministry said in statements to the state-owned news agency MENA, that “This rejection is due to reasons unrelated to slogans and activities of the organizations that it announced they wished to implement in Egypt, but it comes after reviewing the mechanism of the implementation of these activities.”He added that one of these organizations, whose request for a license has been rejected, is the Carter Center, which aims at employing observers to monitor the presidential elections.
There was intense controversy after several US NGOs were raided, earlier this year, and it was found that many of the employees were working without proper documentation.
The funding of the NGOs was also viewed with great suspicion in the Egypt popular media.
International attention forced the release of the NGO workers, whom, had been held pending a trial.
The US government is said to have paid a 2 million bond each on the employees who were detained – one was the US Transportation Secretary’s son – after which the employees promptly fled the country.
For some analysts, it appeared the Ministry of Interior, who carried out the raids, was acting independently of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces, who is the custodial government of Egypt in the transitional period since the fall of Mubarak.
It was a public relations disaster for everyone involved, and the fallout is continuing, as Egypt finds its way to independence and democracy.Hmmmm.......Perhaps the Obama admin can throw in a few more F-16's on top of the Billions already pledged to the Muslim Brotherhood?Read the full story here.
