Turkey celebrated the 89th anniversary of its founding as a republic on Monday, prior to which Turks observed the Muslim Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice. According to the Turkish Presidency, Obama congratulated Gül on Turkey's 89th Republic Day and stressed that Turkey and the United States are working together on current issues in the region and future challenges. Obama's message also expressed the importance of the Turkish community living in the US, stating that America's Turkish communities are playing a vital role in strengthening friendly relations between the two states.
