Obama congratulates Turkish Pres. Gül over Republic Day and Eid al-Adha, Draws attention to the importance of the hajj pilgrimage.(TZ).US President Barack Obama sent messages of congratulation to President Abdullah Gül for the Republic Day and Eid al-Adha holidays. Turkey celebrated the 89th anniversary of its founding as a republic on Monday, prior to which Turks observed the Muslim Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice. According to the Turkish Presidency, Obama congratulated Gül on Turkey's 89th Republic Day and stressed that Turkey and the United States are working together on current issues in the region and future challenges. Obama's message also expressed the importance of the Turkish community living in the US, stating that America's Turkish communities are playing a vital role in strengthening friendly relations between the two states. In his message on Eid al-Adha, President Obama wished President Gül and the Turkish people a happy feast, underlining the main principles behind the holiday including the crucial importance of helping the less fortunate.
