Taliban militants beheaded two children in southern Afghanistan, a provincial governor's office said. The boys, aged 10 and 16, were beheaded in the southern province of Kandahar after they collected left-over food from a police post.

"The children used to go to a police checkpoint to collect food and other things thrown away by police, so the Taliban thought they were spies and abducted them and beheaded them," police spokesman Ghorzang Afrid said.

"The boys were on their way back, when they were stopped by Taliban insurgents who beheaded them," the chief of Zhari district, Jamal Agha, told Reuters. "Both of them were innocent children and had nothing to do with government or foreigners."

Kandahar provincial spokesperson Javid Faisal confirmed the incident, and said "We condemn this brutal act and will try to arrest those who did it," he said.

The Taliban frequently kill those they believe are providing information to international forces but often deny any involvement, particularly when children are involved. A 12- year-old boy was beheaded last year in a Taliban-controlled area of the country, apparently because his older brother was a member of the Afghan police.

In July 2012 in the same district, a sixteen-year-old boy was beheaded and skinned by the Taliban who accused him of spying for the government.

The next month, a girl aged six and a boy of 12 were kidnapped and beheaded in separate incidents in Kandahar and the east of the country. Last year, Taliban militants beheaded 15 men and two women in Helmand province, apparently for dancing together at a party, although other reports suggested they may also have been accused of informing on the Taliban.

Taliban insurgents have also been blamed for beheading scores of local villagers, mostly over charges of spying for Afghan- and US-led NATO military forces.

The recent beheadings occurred the day seven Taliban members launched a grenade and gun attack on the airport, firing at military buildings before being overwhelmed by Afghan security forces.

Also the same day, six militants to attack a provincial council building and voter registration center used a truck bomb in the southern province of Zabul. All the attackers were killed and three police and fifteen civilians were wounded, officials said.

With the ever-increasing insurgency of the Taliban, there is grave concern over how the 352,000-strong Afghan security forces will prevail once most foreign troops have left at the end of next year.Hmmm......The 'Creatures' who received an office in Qatar from the Obama admin.Read the full story here.
