The U.S. believes very active, very aggressive diplomacy with the Islamic Republic is needed to determine whether a nuclear agreement is achievable, Reuters quoted a senior U.S. administration official as saying on Saturday.

Earlier today, U.S. officials had told Al Monitorthat they will be sending a high-level delegation headed by Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns and Under Secretary Wendy Sherman to bilateral nuclear talks with the Iranians in Geneva on 9-10 June.

“In order to really seriously test whether we can reach a diplomatic solution with Iran on its nuclear program, we believe we need to engage in very active and very aggressive diplomacy,” Reuters quoted the U.S. official as saying.

The official added that Washington had not yet seen “the kind of realism on the Iranian side that we need to see.” (Reuters, 7 June)
