OTTAWA – The Canadian Islamic preacher who was detained last week in the Philippines said he will sue the Asian country in order to get his name off its blacklist.

Dr. Bilal Philips, the imam the Philippines accused last week of recruiting and inciting people to commit terrorism, is back in Canada.

On the phone Sunday night from Vancouver, Philips told QMI Agency that the Philippine government detained him last week after it received information from the international police agency Interpol, stating Philips was an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombings in New York City.

Philips admitted that he was, in fact, named as an unindicted co-conspirator by the Americans. He said the accusation was due to the fact he knew a man connected to the bombings. However, Philips said he knew the man before 1993 and did not have any connection to terrorist activity.

Philips said he was deported to Vancouver from the Philippine city of Davao on Saturday. He said his lawyers will fight the deportation in court and demand the Philippines remove him from its blacklist.
Philips was born in Jamaica but grew up in Toronto and he said only holds Canadian citizenship. He studied Islamic law in Saudi Arabia and runs an online Islamic university that he says has 180,000 students worldwide. He currently spends most of his time at home in Qatar.

Philips is controversial. He has been banned from entering several countries including the U.S, the U.K., Kenya, Australia and Germany.

He said his detention in the Philippines and his travel bans have nothing to do with what he said is the bogus charge of him preaching violence. He said he is controversial because he preaches that Islam supercedes everything else.

“Our message says to people, be Muslim first,” he explained. “Meaning you are Muslim before you are Canadian. This is your faith. You are Muslim first and you are Canadian second.”

He said Western countries want religion to be subordinate to nationality.
“We are saying no,” he sad. “We are Muslim by choice and we are Canadian by accident.”

Hmmmm......democracy and Islam are incompatible.
