The cleric, who was brought up in Birmingham and is president of the Majlis Ulama-e-Shia which represents South Asian Shia mosques and scholars, according to the Daily Mail, continued,

“Because that is what Islam is all about, respecting and giving to others … if in one line I could say what Islam is all about, it is all about love and justice.”





The scholar was speaking alongside Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis at the annual Benedict XVI Lecture, an interfaith discussion event in London.


The three leaders discussed how members of their own faiths had, in different ways, lived as “creative minorities”.

Maulana Rizvi also said that unlike their “Jewish and Christian brothers”, Muslims in Britain were a new community, established for decades rather than centuries, and had a “lot to learn” from other religious groups.

According to Daily Mail, Cardinal Vincent Nichols warned that definitions of extremism could become “far too embracing of simply the current social consensus.”

He cited the example of teachers contacting police about pupils suspected of extremism. This ‘can do immense damage’ to levels of trust, he said.

“There is no doubt that the threat of active terror is real. But my impression is that we are at a very delicate point at which the defining of extremism could go quite seriously wrong,” he added.

In a recent Friday sermon in Montpellier, France, Imam Mohamed Khattabi countered criticism of Muslims who do not know the words of "La Marseillaise," and asked: "We are supposed to prefer man-made words over words conveyed by God?!"

Turkey must improve its human rights record before it can justify admission to the EU, claims Germany’s Human Rights Commissioner Christoph Strässer, adding that under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the situation in the country has "deteriorated" drastically.

Asked whether the EU will make any concessions for Ankara's membership, Strässer replied: “This concern drives me. There can be no human rights policy discount for Turkey. We must not be generous towards Turkey just because presently we cooperate more with it. The EU must stick to its crystal-clear strict rules with respect to human rights and press freedom,” he told Germany's N24 news website.

Turkey first sought EU membership back in 1987, but its bid has made little progress since then, with key issues like fundamental freedoms and the future of Cyprus proving to be major obstacles.
“It seems to me that Turkey is trying to use the situation in Syria and its geopolitical tussle with Russia in order to bring this potential EU membership back on the agenda,” journalist Bryan MacDonald noted, sharing his opinion on Turkish membership in the EU with RT.

“However, I think it is ‘pie in the sky’ - it is just kind words they are getting from the EU because they are useful to NATO and the EU at the moment. I don’t see any possibility that 80 million Turks who are Muslims in a largely Christian EU will ever be allowed to join the organization,” he added.

According to Germany’s Human Rights Commissioner, Ankara is still far from attaining eligibility for EU membership, however.“We need to repeatedly send a compliance reminder to Ankara. In Turkey, dissenters are punished, and there are attacks against the opposition. As long as there's such a thing, the country doesn't belong in the EU. If we ignore it, it would be a fatal signal,” Strässer warned. Read the full story here.

I have been asked by foreign journalists several times over the last few days on whether I feel the elections might have been rigged. Homo Economicus does not have feelings, except under special circumstances, but I can give you some numbers:

While the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) maintained its votes compared to the June 7 elections, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Peoples’ Democracy Party (HDP) lost 2 and 1 million votes respectively. Besides, two small parties that had entered the elections jointly in June got 300K less this time.

Last but definitely not the least, there were 1.3 million additional votes compared to June: Of this, 600K were due to new votes (of which 200K were new registered voters) and 700K less invalid votes. Interestingly, more than half of the additional votes were from Istanbul, where the share of invalid votes shrank significantly.

If you do the math, all of this adds up to the 4.5 million extra votes the Justice and Development Party (AKP) got compared to June 7. In other words, the AKP got all the possible votes it could; most of the defections from other parties as well as the additional votes. Add in other flashing red lights, such as the speed of the vote count and early victory declarations in the pro-government media, and you can see why people are suspicious. A statistical study of the voting patterns in Turkey’s November 1 general election found strong evidence that is “consistent with widespread voting manipulation".

That was the conclusion of a paper released by assistant professor Erik Meyersson at Stockholm School of Economics entitled “Digit Tests and the Peculiar Election Dynamics of Turkey’s November Elections", and released on November 4.

The result of the elections came as a shock as the Justice and Development Party (AKP) of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s defied the almost universal polling consensus and won some 9 percentage points more than expected – just enough to rule alone, but not quite a constitutional majority.


Some have speculated that faced with external and internal instability Turks have turned to a strong leader to see them through uncertain times in what might be called a “Sultan complex". However, drilling down into the voting statistics Meyersson concludes that Sunday’s result was not so much an AKP victory as a defeat for the ultra-nationalist Nationalist Action Party (MHP).

The main statistical test the paper explores is the use of the so-called Benford’s Law that is a widespread statistical technique for spotting cheating in polls and has a big body of academic literature behind it.


The way it works is simple: in a fair vote the last number of the final tally for each polling station should be randomly distributed. As humans are very bad at generating random numbers if the vote count has been tampered with then this randomness is destroyed and a discernable pattern emerges.

In a table that measures this frequency of number pairs Meyersson found that, “In all but one cases does  the occurrences of adjacent digits change between November and June for the MHP, and for the HDP there is a statistically significant change in the five largest provinces sample.”

“Overall, this analysis shows evidence that would be consistent with widespread voting manipulation, not proof of it, both in terms of the change in the distribution of last as well as adjacent digits,” Meyersson concludes the paper with.


“Sunday’s landslide victory by the AKP represents a remarkable comeback for a government that according to the overwhelming majority of polling companies looked set to repeat its June loss. Many are now pointing fingers at these pollsters (and analysts overall) asking how they could have been so wrong. But what if they weren’t?” Read and see the full study here.

Iran and Turkey signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of human rights, the Iranian news website bazresi.ir. reported Sept. 18.

The agreement was signed as part of the international symposium on ombudsman institutions, held in Ankara September 16-17.


The ombudsmen from 28 countries, including Azerbaijan, Iran, Jordan, Ukraine, Pakistan, Russia, Sudan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and others attended the symposium.

Hmmm....that's like NAZI Germany and Imperial Japan cooperating on Jewish -Chinese rights.

A religious scholar who is known to be held in high-esteem by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has described political parties and Western-style democracy as troublemakers.

“[Political] parties are institutions that have become a nuisance for us due to the application of a Western-style democracy,” Hayrettin Karaman, who previously taught Islamic law at the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University, said in his column on Sunday.

“This piece is the product of a mindset which has failed to embrace democracy, pluralism and living together in peace with diversities within society,” Ayhan Kaya, director of the European Institute at Bilgi University, told Today's Zaman.

In his column in the pro-government Yeni Şafak daily, Karaman claimed, after noting that divergences are also permitted among people to a certain extent in an Islamic democracy, that diverging opinions in such a system would not lead to perpetual conflict as is the case in Western-style democracies.

Karaman's argument lends itself to being understood that opposition to those in power is not well-received should it pave the way for divisions within society.

“When a person and his cadre come to power [in an Islamic system], the power belongs to the entire community [of Muslims], [and] the community acts as a [single] whole without prejudice to the right of criticism and supervision,” Karaman said.

Karaman's opinion is not surprising considering that the society is expected to obey the political leader in Sunni Islamic dogma.

According to Kaya, Karaman's piece, from a secular point of view, appears to be a dictation.

“He assumes diverging opinions in a given community, which is established according to Islamic law, are opinions sabotaging society,” Kaya said.

President Erdoğan said years ago, when he was mayor of İstanbul during the 1990s, that democracy is not an end in and of itself, but a means to an end.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed new members to the Supreme Council of Cyberspace (SCC) and outlined its major policies.

Khamenei said in a decree, posted on his official website Sept. 5, that the main duty of the SCC is to carry out macro-management, take necessary and timely decisions, and oversee the area of interest.

He said the previous similar councils were void and handed over those councils’ tasks to the new one.
Iranian leader also urged to improve the council’s status for it to be able to take necessary decisions and conduct coordination among other government organizations in areas of interest.

Aside from that, he called for a technological improvement of cyberspace in the country and training personnel for areas related to cyberspace.

He also called for providing ample security for cyberspace in the country, developing the Iranian cyberspace in compliance with Islamic norms, and producing content that is in line with the Islamic culture.

On March 7, 2012, Ayatollah Khamenei decreed to establish the SCC.

Under the decree, the SCC is a body responsible for coordinating and implementing cyberspace policy in Iran.

The SCC enjoys significant authority and its decisions are legally-binding.

It has the power to unilaterally dictate policies relating to the Internet, and its actions cannot be obstructed by the Iranian parliament.


The SCC is also able to compel the Commission to Determine the Instances of Criminal Content (CDICC) to pursue particular policies on the Internet censorship, with the body having no choice but to comply with the SCC decisions.

LILLE, France — Saudi Arabia has reiterated its call on the international community to criminalize any act vilifying religious beliefs and symbols of faith as well as all kinds of discrimination based on religion.

Addressing an international symposium on media coverage of religious symbols based on international law, which started in this French city on Saturday, a senior Saudi official said the Kingdom emphasized years ago that the international community must act urgently to confront ethnic, religious and cultural intolerance, which has become widespread in all communities and peoples of the world.

"We have made it clear that freedom of expression without limits or restrictions would lead to violation and abuse of religious and ideological rights," said Abdulmajeed Al-Omari, director for external relations at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

"This requires everyone to intensify efforts to criminalize insulting heavenly religions, prophets, holy books, religious symbols and places of worship," he added.

Al-Omari pointed out that such abuses bred intolerance, extremism and human rights violations and contributed to the growing phenomenon of defamation of religions.

The Kingdom is participating in the forum, with representatives from 16 European countries, a number of international organizations led by UNESCO, Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Association of Islamic Universities.

Al-Omari said the Saudi participation in the symposium falls in line with its efforts to support the principles of justice, humanity, promotion of values and the principles of tolerance in the world as well as to emphasize the importance of respecting religions and religious symbols.  Hmmm.....It might turn out to be only concerning 'defamation of Islam'.

The controversial Saudi prince Talal has openly declared his intention to embark a seven-day pilgrimage to Holy Land and pray in Al-Aqsa Mosque -- the third holiest site in Islam located in the Old City of Jerusalem-- , reported Okaz , the Arabic Saudi Arabian daily on Thursday.

"All my Muslim brothers and sisters must understand that it became a moral imperative for all inhabitants of war-torn Middle-East, namely Arabs, to desist their absurd hostility toward Jewish people. My sovereign, King Salman has instructed me to open a direct dialogue with Israel's intellectual building amicable ties with our Israeli neighbors," Okaz quoted the Saudi prince who lives in one of London's affluent suburbs.

I was always candid regarding the utmost necessity of quelling the growing waves of anti-Semitism in our volatile region , added Prince Talal, and I shall remain lavish in my praise to Israel as the sole democratic entity in one the most tyrannical parts in the entire world.

ISTANBUL: Turkey has restricted students from posting pictures and opinions about school life on Facebook, Twitter and other social media, local media said Thursday.

The changes, put forward by the Education Ministry, took effect after being published in the Official Gazette on July 1, Dogan news agency said.

Students have been barred from sharing pictures and footage from inside the school without the consent of their teacher, and prohibited from insulting classmates or staff.

Violators will face disciplinary action including possible expulsion.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamic-rooted ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been repeatedly criticised over curbs on social media.

Turkey’s parliament in April approved legislation to tighten control over the Internet by allowing the government to block websites without prior judicial authorisation.

The government blocked Twitter and YouTube in March 2014 after they were used to spread a torrent of audio recordings implicating Erdogan — then premier — and his inner circle in an alleged corruption scandal.

AKP, which has also been accused of Islamising the education system, lost its overall majority for the first time in 13 years in a parliamentary election on June 7.
