Turkey has fired hundreds of senior military staff serving at NATO in Europe and the United States following July's coup attempt, documents show, broadening a purge to include some of the armed forces' best-trained officials.

In a classified military dispatch seen by Reuters, 149 military envoys posted to the alliance's headquarters and command centers in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Britain were ordered on Sept. 27 to return to Turkey within three days.

Most were dismissed from service on their arrival, arrested and imprisoned, according to a Turkish military official at NATO and two farewell letters sent by departing Turkish officials emailed to colleagues at NATO and seen by Reuters.

Of the 50 military staff posted to the Turkish delegation at NATO's headquarters in Brussels, only nine remain, according to the Turkish official who spoke to Reuters. Turkish military representatives were not present in recent meetings. "Turkey is not at the table," the official said.

Turkey's ambassador to NATO, who runs a 30-strong diplomatic team at the alliance HQ, declined to comment.

One dismissed staff member, Colonel Aziz Erdogan, wrote: "The common denominator of these victims is that all of them have a ... Western educational background and secular mindset."Hmmm..........It takes a special kind of stupid not to have expected this = NATO.Read the full story here.

Speaking at a ceremony for appointing judges and prosecutors in the Turkish capital, Erdogan said:

"The United States has been sheltering the leader of the terrorist organization. A very tricky game is underway, and we must be extremely careful. If the extradition of Gulen drags on, we can resort to very serious steps."

According to Erdogan, Gulen's supporters from the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization/Parallel State Structure (FETO), whom Ankara deems as terrorists, are using all the means and resources available to prevent the extradition of the cleric.

“One in three women is subjected to violence” the statement underlined. 

Some 413 murders of women were reported by the Turkish media in 2015, the Umut (Hope) Foundation has stated in a new report, underlining that the trend has been increasing since the beginning of 2016.

The foundation called on Feb. 16 for NGOs to conduct comprehensive studies on the issue, which it described as a “mass murder of women.” 

It said the death toll ranged from women older than 85 to a six-week-old fetus.

Of the 413 killings, 309 were a result of armed attacks, and 40 women have been killed since the beginning of January 2016 alone.

Most young women were killed because they requested a divorce or separation from their partners, the foundation noted, adding that many cases involved victims of “shady suicides,” mostly in southeastern provinces.

The Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) has vehemently defended itself after public uproar greeted its response to a question on whether “a father’s lust for his daughter would affect his marriage,” saying its answer was deliberately “distorted.”

In an official statement to the press, the Diyanet said its response was distorted through “tricks, wiliness and wordplay” aiming to discredit the institution, adding that it would take legal action against news reports of the response.

The reply had briefly appeared on the “fatwa” section of the Diyanet website, where readers’ questions are answered.

One anonymous user asked whether a father having sexual desire for his daughter would result in the cancellation of his marriage from a religious perspective.

The Diyanet posted an answer stating that there is a difference of opinion on the matter among Islam’s different schools of thought.

“For some, a father kissing his daughter with lust or caressing her with desire has no effect on the man’s marriage,” the answer said, referencing various religious sources.

The Diyanet cited the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence as an exception, as it sees the daughter’s mother as “haram” (Arabic for “forbidden”) to such a man.

“Moreover, the girl would be over nine years of age,” it also said.

The scandalous “fatwa” created a social media storm, as scores of users appealed to the Telecommunications Presidency’s Internet Hotline accusing Turkey’s top religious body of “encouraging child abuse.”

The Diyanet subsequently removed the answer from its website and posted a warning, saying the page in question was “under repair.” Hmmmm.....EU Values? Please keep Islamist Turkey out of Europe. More on this story here.

Men dressed as Ottoman janissaries chased Santa Claus in a street show protesting the celebration of New Year's Eve in western Turkey, which ended with Santa converting to Islam.

As the show proceeded, Santa was brought to face a qadi, an Islamic judge in the Ottoman era, after he was caught by the janissaries, the Ottoman elite infantry units.

The act, staged by members of the nationalist-Islamic Grand Unity Party (BBP) in the province of Bolu, highlights anti-New Year's Eve celebrations sentiments in Turkey, where the festivity is widely deemed to be associated with Christianity.

“What we call femicide is actually murder of women who revolt against abuse and push for independence,” says the We Will Stop Femicides Platform (WSF). But their husbands and male family members respond to this new-found independence with more violence, while protection mechanisms fail to protect the victims.

In Turkey, the number of women who are subjected to violence and murder has increased, but so has the brutality of the violence, according to an Izmir-based jurist.

Nuriye Kadan, who heads Izmir Bar Association’s Women’s Rights and Legal Support Office, says that the last decade has not only seen the increase in the numbers of women subject to violence, but that the violence itself has become more intense and barbaric, “bordering on torture.”

“A woman who came to us for legal protection last year had been stabbed 42 times by her husband,” Kadan told Hurriyet Daily News (HDN) on Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. “These women are not just killed; they are mutilated and subjected to additional violence before and after the murder. The dose of violence borders on torture. The so-called third page news on women’s murders include attempts to burn the body, cut it into pieces or decapitation.”

“We have lost 294 women in murders only last year. That’s the number found through our press monitoring. The state does not share all the data. Our focus is to make sure that there is no penalty reduction for good behavior and that ‘passionate crime’ reasoning is not used for those who carried out female homicides,” Kural said at a TEDx event in Izmir.

“What we want ultimately is an article in the criminal code that prevents anything but maximum penalty for the perpetrators of femicides, with no pardons. We have submitted a bill to parliament and we remind each Family and Social Affairs Minister of this goal.” Hmmmm......With the rise of a certain party the number of Women murders rose as well. Iran and Turkey signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of human rights, the Iranian news website bazresi.ir. reported Sept. 18.

The agreement was signed as part of the international symposium on ombudsman institutions, held in Ankara September 16-17.


The ombudsmen from 28 countries, including Azerbaijan, Iran, Jordan, Ukraine, Pakistan, Russia, Sudan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and others attended the symposium.

Hmmm....that's like NAZI Germany and Imperial Japan cooperating on Jewish -Chinese rights.

Turkey’s Reichsleiter President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the United Nations to act against Israel’s “breach” of the sanctity of the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, a Turkish source said Tuesday night, according to the Turkish Hurriyet news website.

Erdogan told UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during a phone conversation that Israel’s actions were “unacceptable” and a cause for “serious indignation” in the Muslim world, the source said.

Muslim protesters clashed with police for a third consecutive day on Wednesday morning, after the protesters barricaded a door into the mosque and threw stones and firecrackers at the entrance to the Temple Mount for non-Muslims. Police later removed the barricade, closing the protesters inside the mosque.

Erdogan also demanded world pressure on Israel over the establishment of an Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.Hmmm.....The Middle East would be much more peaceful place without 'leaders' like Erdogan. Read the full story here.

The Monument Counter is an on-line (Internet) monument to commemorate the women who lost their lives due to domestic violence. It is also a counter that is updated every day. It has been announced that between January and September 2012 that the 125 women lost their lives due to domestic violence. The Monument Counter bunun has been conceived as a device to generate public awareness Concerning the rising number of deaths due to domestic violence and bring light into unknown data. This website will have the names of the dead woman and is not only an awareness raising mechanism directed against society Concerning domestic violence but also is a monument for the dead woman. The counter masks a rising threat while also reporting about the continuity of violence. The Monument Counter does not only demonstrate a worrying increase, a burdensome accumulation but also invites an urgent count down. As the counter counts up, hope Vanishes. It Disappears one by one. 

The main page of the Monument Counter is the counter itself. It contains a counter showing the women who have died because of domestic violence and a page that consists of the names of the dead women. This page builds a semi-wall with the names of the dead women who have been killed between 2008-2015 and will be updated daily. The wall will have a separate color for each year and will thus show the difference between years. When one clicks on the name of a woman there will be another page.

In order to create this website, various requests were submitted to the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Family and Social Policy and General Directorate for Security Concerning data on women. As they remained fruitless, a media search has been made ​​between 2008-2013. This data has been compared with that of the "Platform for Stopping Homicide of Women" and a list has been compiled. Attention has been paid to cover only deaths Caused by domestic violence and other Causes have been eliminated with unclear motives. Recently cleared domestic violence cases are being added to the list of Sinem such as Yurdanur who died in 2010, as they become public knowledge. As the list has been compiled through media search, it is possible that many other homicides have occurred that have not been covered. With the opening of a separate page for each woman, one can see how, why and by whom she has been killed as well as whether it she requested protection from the government. One can also see the news in the media Regarding the homicide. This draws attention to the difference in the language used over the years by the media in covering this kind of news.

Was most of the looting at the most extensively looted site in Syria conducted under the Islamic State or the Free Syrian Army? 

A few months ago, I pieced together a sample of satellite image data from the the Geospatial Technologies and Human Rights Project (1) with historical data on antiquities looting and the development of the Syrian civil war (2), in order to work out under which (para)military authorities the looting had taken place. I found evidence of ‘looting within regime and rebel territories as well as under jihadist rule’. There’s been further discussion of the project’s meticulous and much-needed work. As Sarah Parcak has said (separately), you ‘cannot argue w[ith] sat[ellite] data’.

“Alarmingly aggressive”, “industrial-scale” looting at Dura Europos al-Salhiya

A few months ago, I summarised,

Kathy Wren’s report on the AAAS team’s work also included ground-level photographs of the looting pits at the ‘most extensive[ly]’ looted site, Dura-Europos (at least one of which had been previously published by le Patrimoine Archéologique Syrien en Danger on the 2nd of April 2014).

Wren explained that the AAAS analysis showed that ‘76% of the area within the city wall had been damaged by April 2014, and the looting pits were so close together it was impossible to distinguish individual pits’.

Apparently, it was almost levelled by a 300(?)-strong looting workforce. Roman archaeologist Simon James judged that they must have been ‘bankrolled to a massive extent’ to conduct the “industrial-scale” looting.

Now, NPR journalists Deborah Amos and Alison Meuse have explained the overall situation:

The looting of antiquities accelerated in 2014, as ISIS tightened its grip across northern and eastern Syria and Iraq. The militant group is now the major player in the illicit trade of antiquities, but not the only ones in the looting business. Syrian regime soldiers and opposition rebels started looking for profit almost as soon as the conflict began in Syria.

That generic statement and Syrian archaeologist Amr al-Azm’s observation that ‘ISIS came [in]to a pre-existing situation’ were the only references to antiquities looting under non-jihadist forces.

By the time that the the Islamic State had taken over Dura Europos in September 2014, the Syrian Heritage Initiative judged that it had already suffered “large-scale, systematic looting”, which had ‘destroy[ed] the archaeological record over an enormous area’. According to the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM), which operates in regime territory, looting at Dura Europos had stopped by November 2014, though it had started again by February 2015.

So, the Islamic State has looted Dura Europos. But it took over six months after harm had befallen 76% of the site, since when the area that has been lost to looting has seemingly not increased to more than 80% of the site (as it is still said to be “more than 70%”). 

As I found the first time that I looked into it, ‘the worst damage, the industrial-scale looting of the site, was done when the site was under Free Syrian Army control (against the local community’s wishes)’. Hmmm.......The Obama and Erdogan supported FSA. Read the full story here.

Several Middle East refugees, set to be granted asylum in Norway as part of a UN program, have links to the Islamic State (ISIL) and Nusra Front militant groups, Norwegian media reported Monday, citing local police.

"Unfortunately, there are people who try to exploit and abuse the refugee system. We have uncovered some quota refugees with links to the Nusra Front and the ISIL," police superintendent Svein Erik Molstad said as quoted by the Dagbladet newspaper.

During two trips to the Middle East, Norway’s Police Security Service discovered that around ten Norway-bound quota refugees were members of the groups, designated as terrorist organizations by many countries, according to the daily. Hmmmm.....As i said before the fact ISIS is selecting English speaking kids for training and Indoctrination, Some may well be kidnapped Jezidi children, this means they plan to bring them oversees, we are not ready for this threat.

The number of inmates in Turkey has exceeded the capacity of the country’s prisons, leading to serious overcrowding issues, according to a report prepared by parliament’s Human Rights Inspection Commission.

As of March 2, the number of inmates across Turkey was 165,033, recent data provided by the Justice Ministry showed. The total number of convicts is 142,114, while the number of people under arrest pending trial was 22,919.

The total capacity of prisons across Turkey is 163,129, according to the data. The rise in the number of inmates has caused a number of severe problems in prisons across the country, the report revealed.

“The highest bunks almost touch the ceiling in some prisons. But there still are some inmates who have to sleep on beds on the floor due to the lack of bed space,” said the report.

“Bathroom and kitchens are in the same place, which leads to hygiene problems. Some inmates said they had to eat their meals on their beds due to lack of space in the kitchen or on tables,” it added.

“Some rooms have seven bunks and others have seven beds on the floor along the wall. As many as 25 inmates stay in some rooms, which have a capacity of only 18. Some inmates are provided with hot water twice a week for only 40 minutes, an insufficient period of time,” stated the report. Hmmmm......Please God, keep them out of Europe. A group of British medical students of Sudanese origin who went missing after travelling to Turkey are feared to have crossed into Syria to join the Islamic State (IS) group as doctors, reports and sources said on Sunday.

The families of the students have travelled to the Turkey-Syria border in a desperate appeal for them to return home before it is too late, a Turkish opposition MP said.

According to reports in Britain's Guardian newspaper and the BBC, the nine young British medical students flew to Istanbul from the Sudanese capital Khartoum on March 12 and then overland towards Syria.

They have been joined by two other medics from the United States and Canada, also of Sudanese origin, the BBC said.

It is believed they are working in a hospital in Tel Abyad, which lies in the governorate of Raqqa - the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s (Isil) de facto capital.

Mehmet Ali Edibogl, a Turkish opposition politician told The Observer: “These kids were born and raised in England, but they were sent to Sudan to study at medical school,” “I’ve asked the families why they sent their children to study there (Sudan), and as I understood it, they wanted them to experience a more Islamic culture and not to forget their roots.

“They have been cheated, brainwashed. That is what I, and their relatives, think.” Ahmed Babikir, students' dean at Khartoum's private University of Medical Sciences told AFP five students university were missing after travelling to Turkey.

"They all have British passports and are of Sudanese origin," he said.

"Their families have travelled after them to stop them from joining IS. We are not able to confirm they have crossed into Syria".

The group, who are all in their early 20s, had all moved to the Sudanese capital of Khartoum to study medicine several years ago, having grown up in the UK.Three had already graduated while the others were still studying.

Amal Clooney, the human rights barrister, has accused Turkey of double standards on freedom of expression for defending a Turkish Leftist who described the Armenian genocide an "international lie".

Mrs Clooney, who is representing Armenia on behalf of Doughty Street Chambers along with Geoffrey Robertson QC, said Turkey's stance was hypocritical "because of its disgraceful record on freedom of expression”, including prosecutions of Turkish-Armenians who campaign for the1915 massacres to be called a genocide.

The ECHR upheld his right to question in a “debate of clear public interest” and questioned if it was possible to define as a genocide, a policy of deliberate extermination, the massacres and deportations of Armenians by the Turks a century ago.

The human rights lawyer, who married George Clooney her Hollywood film star husband last September, accused the Strasbourg’s court’s human rights judges of being “simply wrong”.

“It cast doubt doubt of the reality of genocide that Armenian people suffered a century ago,” she said “Armenia must have its day in court. The stakes could not be higher for the Armenian people.”

Switzerland has laws against the denial of all genocide as part of its anti-racism laws but the ECHR ruled that Mr Perinçek's right to freedom of speech was violated when he was convicted as a criminal by a Swiss court for his claims.

In a December 2013 judgement, the European court concluded that there was not a “general consensus" that the massacres of Armenians had constituted genocide and that only 20 countries out of 190 worldwide classed it as such.

“Armenia is not here to argue against freedom of expression anymore than Turkey is here to defend it. This court knows very well how disgraceful Turkey’s record on freedom of expression is,” she said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan appears set to anger women and rights groups in the country once again after voicing his strong objection to the equality of women and men, instead suggesting what he called “equivalency.”

“Equality is turning the victim into an oppressor by force or vice versa. What women need is to be able to be equivalent, rather than equal,” the president said.

He also reiterated an argument he voiced in the past, announcing: “You cannot bring women and men into equal positions; that is against nature because their nature is different.”

The president then went on to explain that Islam exalts women as “mothers” and said that when he was a child he used to kiss his mother's feet, referring to a hadith of Prophet Muhammad that says “Heaven lies at the foot of your mother.”

“My mother would be shy, but I used to say, ‘Mother, don't pull your feet away, because the scent of heaven is there.' Sometimes, she would cry [when I would say that],” Erdoğan said.

He also slammed feminists, saying they “don't accept the concept of motherhood.”

Turkey's population has increased by 26 percent in the last 20 years, and has also experienced dramatic increases in crime rates, with a 400 percent surge in drug-related crimes, theft and homicide, Today's Zaman reported.

In 1994, the number of arrested prisoners was recorded as 38,931; 20 years later, as of the beginning of October, the number of prisoners this year has reached 152,335.

Contrary to what Turkish leadership claims the more 'religious' the country became, the higher the overall crime rates.

Even during the Sept. 12, 1980 coup d'état period that lasted until 1983, though there were large numbers of innocent people arrested, it only amounted to 80,000 prisoners.

According to the data provided by the Ministry of Justice, the crime rate is growing with each passing day.

According to the statistics provided, the population of Turkey has increased from 60 million to 76 million in 20 years and the crime rate has increased by 26 percent.

The number of people who have been arrested for robbery is 30,992, the number for drug trade offenses is 26,697, and the number of those arrested for homicide has reached 26,578 this year as of September.

Furthermore, according to the statistics there are 794 minors from the 12 to 17-year-old age group who have been convicted, and 7,018 convicts in the 18 to 20-year-old age group.

In comparison to previous years, this is a 40 percent increase in crimes like those related to the drug trade, robbery, extortion and homicide committed by minors and young adults.  Hmmm...If Europe needed another reason to keep Turkey out of Europe....here's one.
