The dominant assessment in NATO is clear: Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan staged the coup against himself.

Senior NATO sources tell aldrimer.no that they believe Erdoğan staged the coup himself. However, they stress that there is no written NATO documentation for that claim, because it is simply too sensitive. That’s because all member nation’s have the right to access to all intelligence information gathered by the alliance.

1,600 names.

But the dominant NATO assessment is quite clear.

«The senior officers, three- and four-star generals, and those who worked with Turkey for 30-40 years and who mentored Turkish officers for four or five years, say they do not believe that there was a coup. If the Turkish Armed Forces wanted to carry out a coup, they would have succeeded. That’s a tradition in Turkey,» said a NATO source, without a hint of irony.

«They had a list of 1,600 names the very next day of people they wanted gone,» he added.

Tanks and warplanes.

On Friday, 15 July 2016 Turkish tanks rolled into the streets in Ankara and Istanbul. Two bridges over the Bosporus Strait were closed. Fighter planes  also took off in Ankara, where Parliament and the presidential palace were attacked.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was on holiday in Marmaris, in southern Turkey, but travelled that nigtht to Istanbul by private jet.

The very next morning, reports from Turkey said the coup had been foiled. A systematic and comprehensive purge of military officers, judges and others in the Turkish power apparatus started immediately.

A year of preparation.

Some 80-90 per cent of Turkish officers who served in NATO were relieved of their posts, aldrimer.no has learned from reliable sources. Many of those who dared to return home were jailed and a significant number were killed, according to NATO sources.

«Turkish officers who still have contact with NATO said that Erdogan had been planning the so-called coup for a year and had a list of people he wanted out.” said a NATO source. «I have so far not met anyone who believes there was a real coup attempt,» said the source.

Described as narcissist.

A think tank that NATO regularly uses has issued a classified assessment of Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as a  narcissist.

The commercial intelligence report is available to NATO officers and NATO member states through NATO Intelligence Fusion Center (NIFCA).

Broken up.

One of the first things Erdogan did after the alleged coup was to split the military and the paramilitary gendarmerie. Those two units were previously organized under the same umbrella and wore the same uniform, although they were different organizations with different objectives.

The gendarmerie, in particular, was loyal to Erdogan and actively participated in the purges after the events in Turkey in mid-July. However,  many Turkish Armed Forces officers also enjoyed promotions after displaying loyalty to the president.

NATO noted that a Turkish officer at NATO’s military headquarters SHAPE in Mons, Belgium, was abruptly promoted from major to colonel.

Declined to comment.


Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg declined to comment to aldrimer.no. The NATO press office responded with a written statement it asked to be atributed to a «NATO official». In the statement the press office stated that «the NATO Secretary General has commented publicly on the failed coup and its aftermath, and has discussed these issues with the Turkish political leadership». And went on to add:

«He has made clear that those responsible for the failed coup must be brought to justice, and it is important that this be done with full respect for the rule of law.»
The NATO press office, however, did not respond to aldrimer.nos specific questions about NATO assessments of who was really behind the attempted coup in Turkey in July 2016.

Aldrimer.no has contacted the office of the president of Turkey and offered the president a chance to comment. The office has not responded.

In his analysis, Jenkins brings us first up to date on the rapdily escalating rift between Ankara and the EU over the claims that a ‘Gülenist coup’ is an official Turkish lie:

On January 21, 2017, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a statement describing as “erroneous, unfounded, biased and ignorant” a leaked report by INTCEN, the EU’s intelligence-sharing unit, questioning the Turkish government’s claims that the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, was masterminded by the exiled Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen. In fact, the INTCEN report said that some of Gülen’s followers probably participated in the coup, adding that it was unlikely that Gülen himself had masterminded it.
The MFA would have been justified in asking how INTCEN could be so certain, particularly as the report does not cite any concrete evidence. But the same question could also be directed at the Turkish authorities. As soon as the news of the attempted putsch broke – long before the identities of the participating officers had become clear – President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the members of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) immediately blamed the Gülen Movement.
It was an assumption, not a deduction.

The repressive regime of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been secretly building a paramilitary force with the help of retired Islamist and neo-nationalist generals since 2011 using Libyan and Syrian theatres for drills.

An orchestrated failed coup attempt on July 15 gave Erdoğan a fresh mandate to turn over the helm of the NATO alliance’s second largest army to this paramilitary group, with many distinguished officers including four-star generals purged without due process or investigation and replaced with partisans.

But more importantly, Erdoğan orchestrated a change that went largely unnoticed amid massive purges that have so far amounted over 100,000 from the military and branches of government. The change was buried in a government decree dated Oct. 31, 2016 that included a long list of dismissals and many changes. It said “retired officers and non commissioned officers are tasked with involvement in the recruitment of military personnel and cadets to the Turkish Armed Forces [TSK] until 2020.” This critical change effectively gives the entire personnel policy of the Turkish army to retired military men whose allegiance lies with the personality cult of the country’s top Islamist.

The man who runs Erdoğan’s private army, called Sadat, which has been training militant Islamist rebels who are fighting in Libya and Syria, is Adnan Tanrıverdi, a retired lieutenant general who was given the official position of chief military advisor to the president in August, a month after the failed coup. He is the point man who will reshape NATO’s largest army after the US by steering recruitment policy until 2020. Tanrıverdi is known for his Islamist ideology and has counseled Erdoğan for years although in an unofficial capacity.

Last but not the least, the Syrian operation by Turkey-backed rebels is effectively run by Sadat, whose headquarters are now located in Erdoğan’s palace. The orders and targeting are provided to the Turkish military by Sadat people, who have only one vested interest, which is to help Erdoğan fulfill his caliphate-style ambitions in the region. Even if the top brass may be unwilling to proceed on some of Erdoğan’s orders, that would not matter much given the fact that Erdoğan has already placed loyalists in field command positions to bypass the chain of command.

As a result, if Erdoğan’s vision succeeds, NATO’s second largest army will soon turn into an Islamist bastion that will breed religious zealots just like the Grand Ayatollah’s Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). As many as six NATO countries are prepared to send their ground-based, naval and air force units to the Black Sea area in 2017, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday upon the completion of the first day of a conference of the North-Atlantic pact's defense ministers.

He said Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, and the U.S. had confirmed their plans to dispatch units to Romania for a strengthening of NATO presense in the Black Sea area.

Specifically, he said 

• Albania, Italy, Poland, and Slovenia will join the Canadian military already depoloyed in Latvia, 
• Belgium, Croatia, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, 
• and Norway will join the Germans in Lithuania.

Turkey has fired hundreds of senior military staff serving at NATO in Europe and the United States following July's coup attempt, documents show, broadening a purge to include some of the armed forces' best-trained officials.

In a classified military dispatch seen by Reuters, 149 military envoys posted to the alliance's headquarters and command centers in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Britain were ordered on Sept. 27 to return to Turkey within three days.

Most were dismissed from service on their arrival, arrested and imprisoned, according to a Turkish military official at NATO and two farewell letters sent by departing Turkish officials emailed to colleagues at NATO and seen by Reuters.

Of the 50 military staff posted to the Turkish delegation at NATO's headquarters in Brussels, only nine remain, according to the Turkish official who spoke to Reuters. Turkish military representatives were not present in recent meetings. "Turkey is not at the table," the official said.

Turkey's ambassador to NATO, who runs a 30-strong diplomatic team at the alliance HQ, declined to comment.

NATO will not participate in combat operations in Syria and Iraq, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told a conference on Afghanistan on Wednesday.

"NATO will not be part of combat operations. We have already started training Iraqi officers in Jordan, we will soon start to train Iraqi officers in Iraq, and we will also start to provide support with AWACS surveillance planes to the international coalition fighting ISIL," Stoltenberg said.

Speaking about the alliance’s actions in Afghanistan, Stoltenberg stressed that NATO believes it is more important to provide assistance to Kabul in ensuring the country’s security. "As you know we have ended our combat operations in Afghanistan so what we do now is support the Afghan forces," he said in a doorstep statement before the European Union-hosted Brussels conference on Afghanistan. Hmmmm........Erdo....you're on your own.

The Russian Defense Ministry is completing the construction of the final three submarine berths in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk (930 miles south of Moscow). According to a RBTH source in the military-industrial complex, the Black Sea Fleet's new base will host six Varshavyanka class Project 636.6 submarines.

"Currently, three of them are already in the city's harbor – the Rostov-on-Don, Novorossiysk and Stary Oskol," said the RBTH source.

"Each submarine is equipped with underwater torpedoes to combat surface ships and Kalibr missiles, which have demonstrated their combat power in Syria, including the ability to hit targets at a distance of up to 2,500 km."

According to the source, the decision to deploy an additional base on the Black Sea was made in connection with the increased activity of NATO warships in the past few years.


"The deployment of Varshavyanka class Project 636.6) submarines in Novorossiysk allows Russia to control potential threats in Europe and the Middle East," said the source.

The strength of the new base's location for the Black Sea Fleet is the possibility to distribute ships and submarines between several naval bases in the same region, say analysts. However, the base in Novorossiysk has a crucial issue that still needs to be resolved.

"First of all, it’s about climatic conditions," Litovkin told RBTH. "The maritime area of Novorossiysk is regularly subjected to the impact of northern winds from the Caucasus Mountains, which hit ships and houses in their path with great force.

“The wind can throw ships ashore and destroy the entire military infrastructure. The base is being constructed in such a way that the gusts of wind will not be so catastrophic."


According to him, Russia is building an additional tunnel in the Caucasus Mountains to nullify the threat of destructive winds.

Tank battalions will be set up within six air assault large units of Russia’s Airborne Force before the end of 2018, a high-ranking source in the Airborne Force told TASS on Tuesday.

"All our air assault large units, i.e. two divisions and four brigades, will start setting up tank companies in the second half of the year. We are planning to complete this work by the end of the year to transform these companies into battalions," the source said.

"Thus, each air assault large unit will have a T-72B3 tank battalion by 2018," the source added.
TASS does not have any official information.

Airborne Force Commander Vladimir Shamanov said earlier that the Airborne Force would set up six tank companies in 2015.

According to the source, these plans were not fulfilled "due to financial problems."

"These plans have been adjusted and we will start fulfilling them in the second half of the year," the source said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Wednesday that Israel would upgrade its ties with the 28-member NATO military alliance by opening a permanent mission to its Brussels headquarters.

The move comes as NATO member Turkey reportedly agreed to end its objection to closer links to the Jewish state.

“I announce that Israel will accept the invitation; we will open an office soon,” he said at the start of a cabinet meeting.

“I think that this is also an important expression of Israel’s standing in the world. The countries of the world are looking to cooperate with us due to – inter alia – our determined fight against terrorism, our technological know-how and our intelligence services,” Netanyahu added, according to a translation released by his office.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement late Tuesday that NATO had invited the Jewish state to “open an office at NATO headquarters in Brussels and complete the process of accrediting its representatives to NATO.”

On Wednesday, NATO issued a statement averring that “the North Atlantic Council has agreed ‎to accept the request that an official Israeli Mission be established at NATO headquarters.

“Israel is a very active partner of the Alliance as a member of NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue, established in December 1994,” the statement continued. “NATO has invited all partners to open diplomatic missions to the Headquarters of the Atlantic Alliance in Brussels.”

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon corrected the NATO statement, telling The Times of Israel that Israel’s Ambassador to the EU David Walzer, and not its envoy to Belgium, Simona Frankel, would head the mission to NATO.

An Israeli expert told AFP that the invitation was a result of pressure by other NATO members on Turkey, which joined in 1952, to drop its veto on closer alliance ties with its former ally.

“It’s a Turkish confidence-building measure vis-a-vis Israel,” said Tommy Steiner, an expert on NATO-Israel ties at the Institute for Policy and Strategy near Tel Aviv.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel reportedly told Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe last year that his country could joint NATO counting on her support.

“We recognize the importance of maintaining dialogue with Russia.” This was inserted in a joint communique from the Group of Seven foreign ministers’ meeting held in Hiroshima at the Japanese government’s desire.

Ever since Russia annexed Crimea in southern Ukraine in March 2014, the G-7 nations have continued to impose sanctions against Russia. Among these countries, the United States is particularly distrustful of Russia and U.S. President Barack Obama even gave bitter but sincere advice to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who maintains a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The word “dialogue” was incorporated in the joint communique, according to a Japan-Russia diplomatic source, because “if Abe visits Russia before the G-7 Ise-Shima Summit to make progress in negotiations over the northern territories, Japan can claim that his visit will not cause disarray among the G-7 nations.”

The northern territories issue is a weighty task that Abe has been focusing on.

In March last year, visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel made an unexpected proposal to Abe during a dinner meeting.

“Shinzo, why not join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization?” Merkel asked. “I can convince British Prime Minister Cameron and French President Hollande.”

Japan and Russia have long been caught in a dispute over the disputed islands referred to as the Northern Territories by Tokyo and the Kuril Islands by Moscow.

European Commission President Jean-Claud Juncker’s statement Ukraine will have no chances of joining the European Union and NATO over the next 20-25 years is a sure sign the doctrine of "Europe’s Big Parasite," which Kiev has pressed for all along is doomed to receive no support, the chairman of the State Duma’s international affairs committee, Alexey Pushkov, has told TASS.

In his speech entitled European Union: a Source of Stability in a Time of Crisis Juncker reaffirmed the idea he had put forward when he took office as the EU leader: the European Union will need a long pause before admitting new member-states. This does not apply to the Balkan countries with which the European Union is already in talks over membership. As for Ukraine, it will certainly have no chance of joining the EU over 20-25 years and the same is true of NATO membership, Juncker said.

"Ukraine has dreamed of becoming the largest parasite on the body of the European Union of all newcomers admitted over the past 10-15 years. This doctrine of the largest parasite has met with no support from the European Union at all," Pushkov said.

Pushkov believes that the Juncker expressed the EU’s prevailing point of view: Ukraine is unprepared for joining the European Union and it should not be admitted to NATO.

Pushkov suspects that the European Union is already experiencing what he has described as "expansion fatigue."

"The EU has already accommodated a number of states that have not benefited it at all. In reality, some countries, for instance, Bulgaria and Romania, make life harder for the EU," he explained.

"These are countries with weak economies that pull the EU back, and not forward. They had been admitted precisely for geopolitical reasons, for the sake of adding the economic component to their military-political integration with NATO," Pushkov said. "As far as I understand, that was done under certain pressures from the United States, but now it is the Europeans who have to pay for the admission of states that have added nothing to the EU’s potential." NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai has said the Alliance doesn’t rule out cooperation with Iran.

“We have received no indication from Iran, there are no discussions within NATO about establishing relations,” he told Trend Feb. 16, adding however, “I don’t exclude that it might happen at some point in the future.”

However, Appathurai said NATO doesn’t plan to cooperate with Iran for now.

Russia has dispatched a new ship armed with cruise missiles to the Mediterranean, the navy announced Saturday, as reports said it is bound for Syria.

The Zelyony Dol, a patrol ship armed with Kalibr cruise missiles that only joined the Black Sea fleet in December, departed for the Mediterranean, the Black Sea fleet said in a statement.

RIA-Novosti news agency further quoted a security source in Crimea -- where the Black Sea fleet is based -- saying that the ship is bound for Syria and may take part in Russia's campaign to support the Syrian army.

"The goals of the ship are not public but considering that it is carrying long-range cruise missiles, its participation in the military operation should not be excluded," the source was quoted as saying just a day after world powers agreed to cease hostilities in the war-ravaged country. In a December 16, 2015 speech at the second Basij Supreme Assembly in Mashhad, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) deputy commander Hossein Salami reviewed the geopolitical developments in the Middle East in the wake of the Russian intervention in Syria. Emphasizing that Iran has triumphed in the Middle East and that its "offspring," that is, its emissaries, are in the eastern Mediterranean, he said that Iran has built great capabilities in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

Conversely, he said, Iran's enemies are floundering: Turkey wished to become a regional power but in reality it cannot make an impact "even 10 meters away" from its borders; Saudi Arabia's policies are failing in Yemen, Iraq and Syria; and America has lost much of its influence in the Middle East and has become nothing more than a "regular player." He also noted that the power of Iran and its allies "benefited the Iranian nuclear team at the negotiating table."

"Every time that Islam rose, all the polytheists and enemies of Islam launched a military expedition against God's religion – but despite all of these obstacles, Islam found its path of jihad, its arena of influence, and its range of impact.

"It was those who experienced economic sanctions during the Shaab Abi Taleb era and immigrated to Al-Madina from Mecca with Muhammad who spread Islam.[2] All the great global wars that have occurred in the region of the Islamic world were in order to change the destiny of Islam. Wars were even shaped in Europe to topple the Muslims.

"From the day the Islamic Revolution [in Iran] was victorious [in 1979], the U.S. and the Zionist regime attacked 14 Muslim countries, and the U.S. alone attacked seven Muslim countries – but with the grace of God and the blessing of the Jurisprudent [Iran's ruler], in the era of [Ayatollah Ruhollah] Khomeini and in the grand era of [Iranian Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei, Iran thwarted the focus of the enemy's strategy on the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It was an artistic performance, and a divine wonder, that at the peak of the military blockade [against Iran] all of these focuses [on Iran] were thwarted. At one point, their artillery shells targeted Ahvaz, and our cities, in order to eliminate the concept called Islam from the political geography of the Islamic world. But Islam, and revolution, were able to change the battlefield.

"Look at the radius of our action today. Our offspring in the eastern Mediterranean are monitoring the developments. The order built by the great powers has completely collapsed. The Red Sea and the Mediterranean, Lebanon, Syria, and Bahrain [were once under] U.S. [influence, but] are no longer so. They [the Americans] have lost huge areas. Today, we are facing complicated developments. But when we study these developments, we realize this divine reality: Victory is in our hands.

"All our enemies have something in common: all of them faced a strategic dead end, and are wandering around, [not knowing how] to continue their policies. Look at Turkey. This country wanted to play the role of the great regional power – but it is incapable of making an impact even 10 meters away from it. [Turkey] felt that the atmosphere was ready for it to reclaim an expanded role. 

But after five years of financial, political, and economic efforts, it has not succeeded in any area. We consider Turkey strategically incapable, [even] with a fancy army. [All its] bluffing and threats [are based on] the support of the Americans. Turkey is incapable of expanding its power; it has a fancy army with stylish equipment, but it has never [even] fought the Kurds. Russian deputy prime minister Rogozin barred from entering Montenegro. (CNSNews).

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has been barred from entering Montenegro, which is facing strong pressure from the Kremlin for its plans to join NATO, the country's foreign ministry said Thursday.

Ministry spokeswoman Gordana Jovanovic told the AP that that Rogozin is among 50 Russian politicians and businesspeople who are not allowed to enter the small Balkan country.

Montenegro, a traditional Russian ally that now wants to join the EU and NATO, has adopted Western sanctions against Moscow for its role in the Ukrainian crisis.

Rogozin, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, recently said Montenegro would "regret" joining the Western military alliance which in December issued a formal membership invitation.

No news have been received for the past 4 days from the wounded people waiting in the basement of a building in Cizre’s Cudi neighborhood for the past 12 days. Photos of 8 executed bodies were published in AKP’s social media accounts.

HDP parliamentarians had spoken with the wounded people during the meetings they had with officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs 3 days ago.

10 women with white flags had walked to the yard of the building where the wounded people are two days ago. Ayşe Güven was among these women and said that the second and third floors of the building were destroyed. Güven said that tanks surrounded the building, and no response came through when they called on their children trapped in the building.

Photos of several bodies allegedly from Cizre were shared in AKP’S social media accounts last night. These photos depict the bodies of 8 executed people, but it is not yet certain if the bodies are of the wounded people in the basement. The bodies in the photos are tortured and in an unrecognizable state.

YPS: WE HAVE NO ARMED FORCES IN THE REGION IN QUESTION.

Emergency measure application made to the European Court of Human Rights regarding the inhumane daily attacks that take place in front of the entire world had been rejected. Encouraged by this, the AKP media increased its manipulative coverage claiming that armed persons were in and around the building. However, Civilian Defense Forces (YPS) made a statement yesterday and highlighted that they had no armed forces in the region in question.

Autopsy procedures regarding the 6 bodies, 1 of whom belonged to a woman, that were found 2 days ago in Cizre continue in Şırnak State Hospital. An eyewitness accompanied by the HDP Parliamentarian Leyla Birlik went to the morgue of Şırnak hospital in order to identify these bodies, and stated the following:

“I went to the morgue with the suspicion that one of the deceased was my relative. There are 6 bodies there; two of them are completely burnt. One of the bodies is of a woman. 

We went to the morgue for identification, but could not do so because the bodies were too damaged. The photos shared online are the same photos that are in the morgue. I could only look at the faces of the deceased, and two of them were completely burnt. It is impossible for me to speak of the condition they were in.”

Hmmmm.......Just imagine the UN outrage if Israel did this.

During yesterday's plenary session on "the situation in Southeast Turkey” at the European Parliament, MEPs called attention to the “deliberate massacre” perpetrated by the Turkish state against civilians in the Kurdish region.

Members of the EP underlined that it went contrary to EU values to connive at the Turkish state's attacks on Kurds due to the refugee deal. MEPs remarked that Turkey waged a genocidal war against the Kurdish people under the name of “anti-ISIS fight”, and strongly criticized the European Union's silence on the ongoing onslaught by Turkish state forces across North Kurdistan territory.

The first speech at the session was held by Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn who voiced concerns over the situation in the Kurdish region, noting that they followed the developments closely. Putting emphasis on the importance of a joint effort to come up with a solution to the problems in the region, including the ISIS, Hahn said; "The situation in Southeast Turkey shouldn't have any influence on this matter. We call for a cease-fire and return to peace talks, which stands as the best way to a resolution for the present problem. PKK also should stop its attacks on Turkey and turn back to the dialogue process.”

'KURDISH PEOPLE TARGETED UNDER THE NAME OF ANTI-PKK FIGHT'

Speaking after, Renate Sommer on behalf of the Christian Democrats recalled that the extraordinary situation in Turkey's Kurdish region continued for weeks now as Turkish state forces attack civilians with heavy arms, killing women, children and elderly all alike. Sommer said; "It is not possible for people to move freely while every single living being is targeted and shot once they move. This is what is happening in a total of 17 Kurdish towns at the moment. People are deprived of food and water as well as phone and internet services, yet they do not want to leave home. The state of siege affects one million citizens but only 250 thousand of these have left their houses. The state is targeting the Kurdish people under the name of "anti-PKK fight".
Sommer stressed that it was unacceptable to remain silent on the Turkish state's atrocity against the Kurdish people due to the deals made on the matter of refugees. "We have responsibilities and we need to take action. In addition, we will face a fresh flow of Kurdish immigrants unless we intervene the situation now."
EP Rapporteur on Turkey Kati Piri warned that the situation in the Kurdish region is getting severer as the people of Silopi and Cizre are openly being forced to evacuation amid the ongoing fighting between state forces and Kurdish militia. Piri also criticized the humiliation of the local people by Turkish security forces, and death of a 16-year-old from blood loss.

'TURKEY MADE KURDISTAN A WAR ZONE'

Mark Demesmaeker on behalf of the Conservatives underlined that Turkey has made Kurdistan a war zone and blood bath for the war has spread across all Kurdish towns by now as civilian settlements are being devastated and bodies of slain people are being held on streets. Describing the current situation as a consequence of the policy pursued by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his ruling party, Demesmaeker emphasised that Erdoğan and AKP didn't fight the ISIS but Kurds. He continued; "And we remain silent on all these, for which I feel ashamed now that the European Union doesn't support and defend the Kurdish people, the only dignified folk in the region and the only alliance of ours in the fight against ISIS."
Alexander Graf Lambsdorff for the Liberal Group said Turkey's watch for an opportunity to cease peace talks revealed itself after the murder of two policemen last year. "The AKP government made good use of this opportunity by re-escalating clashes in order to regain the votes it had lost in June election", said Lambsdorff who underlined that the resolution of the Kurdish question can be achieved only through political ways. He added that Ankara has no justification in rejecting the Kurdish people's demand for autonomy.

'WE SHOULDN'T SACRIFICE KURDS TO THE REFUGEE DEAL'

Marietje Schaake from the Liberal Group criticized the European silence on the onslaught in Kurdistan because of the refugee deal with Turkey, and put emphasis on the essentiality of warning Turkey on protection of human rights and acting on a state of law. "We need to be careful and we cannot turn a blind eye to the murder of civilians under the name of "anti-terror fight", she added.

'EU TURNS A DEAF EAR TO THE MASSACRE OF KURDS'

Josu Juaristi Abaunz for EH Bildu pointed out that EU member states turned a deaf ear to the massacre of Kurdish civilians by the Turkish state, and left the Kurdish people to their fat under an unacceptable onslaught.
Josef Wiedenholzer called on both the government and the Kurdish movement to declare truce and embark on a resolution process like the one in North Ireland.
Miltiadis Kyrkos stated that Turkish President Erdoğan deprived the Kurdish civilians of their basic rights and sentenced them to hunger under an embargo in Kurdish towns that are being devastated by heavy artillery.

Describing the onslaught of Turkish state forces as a violation of human rights, international conventions and a planned massacre, Kyrkos underlined that the European Union contradicted with its values by shutting its eyes to this situation. Greek MEP said it was essential to put economic and political pressure on Turkey.

'KURDS FACE PRESSURE FOR DEMANDING THEIR RIGHTS'

Barbara Spinelli for Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left said the heavy aggression on the Kurdish people constituted a violation of the Turkish constitution and international rights, stressing that the Kurds were facing a growing pressure for demanding recognition.

Javi Lopez from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats remarked that the Turkish state pursued a collective punishment policy against the Kurdish people, adding that the European Union must call for truce and a return to suspended negotiations for peace.

By having refused to guarantee Ukraine's debt as part of Russia's proposal to restructure it, the United States effectively admitted the absence of prospects of restoring its solvency, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with Interfax.

"We were ready to restructure Ukraine's $3 billion debt at much more advantageous terms than those asked of us by the IMF [International Monetary Fund]. But these terms, which extend the repayment not by one but three years and in equal installments, were certainly tied to these payments by Ukraine being guaranteed by the EU, the U.S. and the IMF or a first-class international bank. We were denied it. By officially rejecting the proposed scheme, the United States thereby subscribed to not seeing any prospects of Ukraine restoring its solvency," Lavrov said.


"This reform, which they are now trying to implement, designed to suit Ukraine only, could plant a time bomb under all other IMF programs," Lavrov said.

"Essentially, this reform boils down to the following: since Ukraine is politically important - and it is only important because it is opposed to Russia - the IMF is ready to do for Ukraine everything it has not done for anyone else, and the situation that should 100 percent mean a default will be seen as a situation enabling the IMF to finance Ukraine," the minister said.

The IMF Executive Board is meeting on Tuesday to consider changes to the IMF policy with respect to countries with a debt to official creditors.

The IMF's current lending policy rules out the possibility of providing financing for a member state which has a debt to an official creditor. Removing this restriction will enable the IMF to continue disbursements to Ukraine under the current extended-financing program, even if Kyiv defaults on its debt to Russia for the $3 billion Eurobonds issued in 2013. Hmmm.......NEXT...
