Hours after launching a scathing attack on Israel, calling on Muslims to flood the Temple Mount in protest at the “occupation” of Jerusalem, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed ways to halt the so-called “judaization” of Jerusalem with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.

Meeting with Hamdallah in Istanbul Monday night, Erdogan “confirmed the necessity of unifying efforts to protect Jerusalem against attempts of judaization,” according to an official statement carried by the Palestinian Ma’an news agency.

On Monday evening, Erdogan drew swift Israeli rebuke for a speech in which he called Israel “racist and discriminatory,” and said Muslims should visit Jerusalem’s flashpoint Temple Mount more often to support Palestinians.

“Each day that Jerusalem is under occupation is an insult to us,” he said, at the opening ceremony of the International Forum on al-Quds Waqf in Istanbul, Turkey’s Hurriyet news reported.

During the meeting between Erdogan and Hamdallah, the two discussed “ways to support Jerusalem,” and the Palestinian leader updated Erdogan on the latest “Israeli violations” and an ongoing hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners, according to a statement by Hamdallah’s office.

Erdogan said Muslim Turkey had a “historical responsibility” and was paying “huge attention to Jerusalem and to the struggle of Palestinians for justice,” ramping up efforts to make it a city of “security, independence and peace again,” according to the Ma’an report.

Erdogan’s wading into the sensitive subject came a week before he is due to meet with US President Donald Trump, ahead of Trump’s visit to the region in a bid to jumpstart peace efforts.

Erdogan, whose talks with Trump are expected to center around tensions surrounding Syrian fighting, said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should take precedence.

“It is impossible to find a solution and peace in the region without finding a fair solution for the Palestinian cause first,” Erdogan said in the meeting with Hamdallah.

The Turkish president strongly criticized Israel, saying that “no country should be allowed to act above the law.” He said that any efforts at brokering a peace deal are doomed to fail “unless Israel is held accountable for its crimes.”

The United State House Intelligence Committee chairman has said it is “hard to believe” that U.S.-based Turkish cleric is behind the military coup attempt last summer, questioning Turkey as a reliable ally.

“I find that hard to believe,” David Nunes told Chris Wallace from Fox News when asked if cleric Fethullah Gulen is the architect of the coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey.

Mr. Nunes added that the government of Mr. Erdogan is becoming very authoritarian and that Ankara, as a NATO ally, is “becoming more and more worrisome in terms of actually being a reliable ally.”Read the full story here.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence told Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim that Washington was keen for a new start in relations between the two countries, sources in Yildirim's office said, after ties soured during the Obama administration.

Pence and Yildirim met on the sidelines of a security conference in Munich, Germany, and discussed improving ties, boosting cooperation in the fight against terrorism and the need to work together to find a permanent solution in Syria.

Yildirim told Pence that moves by the United States to meet Turkey's demands over Fethullah Gulen, a U.S.-based cleric blamed by Ankara for masterminding and orchestrating a failed coup last July, would pave the way for a fresh start in relations.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and the government want Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, extradited. Gulen denies involvement in the coup attempt.

Ankara has also been angered by U.S. support for a Kurdish militia group fighting ISIS in Syria. Turkey sees the group as an extension of the outlawed PKK, which has waged a three-decade insurgency for Kurdish autonomy in southeastern Turkey and has been behind a spate of recent bombings.

Erdogan believes ties will improve under U.S. President Donald Trump. A phone call between the two earlier this month was very positive, sources in Erdogan's office have said. The dominant assessment in NATO is clear: Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan staged the coup against himself.

Senior NATO sources tell aldrimer.no that they believe Erdoğan staged the coup himself. However, they stress that there is no written NATO documentation for that claim, because it is simply too sensitive. That’s because all member nation’s have the right to access to all intelligence information gathered by the alliance.

1,600 names.

But the dominant NATO assessment is quite clear.

«The senior officers, three- and four-star generals, and those who worked with Turkey for 30-40 years and who mentored Turkish officers for four or five years, say they do not believe that there was a coup. If the Turkish Armed Forces wanted to carry out a coup, they would have succeeded. That’s a tradition in Turkey,» said a NATO source, without a hint of irony.

«They had a list of 1,600 names the very next day of people they wanted gone,» he added.

On Friday, 15 July 2016 Turkish tanks rolled into the streets in Ankara and Istanbul. Two bridges over the Bosporus Strait were closed. Fighter planes  also took off in Ankara, where Parliament and the presidential palace were attacked.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was on holiday in Marmaris, in southern Turkey, but travelled that nigtht to Istanbul by private jet.

The very next morning, reports from Turkey said the coup had been foiled. A systematic and comprehensive purge of military officers, judges and others in the Turkish power apparatus started immediately.

A year of preparation.

Some 80-90 per cent of Turkish officers who served in NATO were relieved of their posts, aldrimer.no has learned from reliable sources. Many of those who dared to return home were jailed and a significant number were killed, according to NATO sources.

«Turkish officers who still have contact with NATO said that Erdogan had been planning the so-called coup for a year and had a list of people he wanted out.” said a NATO source. «I have so far not met anyone who believes there was a real coup attempt,» said the source.

Described as narcissist.

A think tank that NATO regularly uses has issued a classified assessment of Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as a  narcissist.

The commercial intelligence report is available to NATO officers and NATO member states through NATO Intelligence Fusion Center (NIFCA).

Broken up.

One of the first things Erdogan did after the alleged coup was to split the military and the paramilitary gendarmerie. Those two units were previously organized under the same umbrella and wore the same uniform, although they were different organizations with different objectives.

The gendarmerie, in particular, was loyal to Erdogan and actively participated in the purges after the events in Turkey in mid-July. However,  many Turkish Armed Forces officers also enjoyed promotions after displaying loyalty to the president.

NATO noted that a Turkish officer at NATO’s military headquarters SHAPE in Mons, Belgium, was abruptly promoted from major to colonel.

Declined to comment.


Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg declined to comment to aldrimer.no. The NATO press office responded with a written statement it asked to be atributed to a «NATO official». In the statement the press office stated that «the NATO Secretary General has commented publicly on the failed coup and its aftermath, and has discussed these issues with the Turkish political leadership». And went on to add:

«He has made clear that those responsible for the failed coup must be brought to justice, and it is important that this be done with full respect for the rule of law.»
The NATO press office, however, did not respond to aldrimer.nos specific questions about NATO assessments of who was really behind the attempted coup in Turkey in July 2016.

Aldrimer.no has contacted the office of the president of Turkey and offered the president a chance to comment. The office has not responded.

In his analysis, Jenkins brings us first up to date on the rapdily escalating rift between Ankara and the EU over the claims that a ‘Gülenist coup’ is an official Turkish lie:

On January 21, 2017, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a statement describing as “erroneous, unfounded, biased and ignorant” a leaked report by INTCEN, the EU’s intelligence-sharing unit, questioning the Turkish government’s claims that the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, was masterminded by the exiled Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen. In fact, the INTCEN report said that some of Gülen’s followers probably participated in the coup, adding that it was unlikely that Gülen himself had masterminded it.
The MFA would have been justified in asking how INTCEN could be so certain, particularly as the report does not cite any concrete evidence. But the same question could also be directed at the Turkish authorities. As soon as the news of the attempted putsch broke – long before the identities of the participating officers had become clear – President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the members of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) immediately blamed the Gülen Movement.
It was an assumption, not a deduction.

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan chided German Chancellor Angela Merkel over her use of the term “Islamist terror” when describing the Islamic State.

Responding to a comment by Merkel that a joint struggle needed to be waged against the IS group,  Erdogan said the use of the term “Islamist terror” was not correct.

“Islam means peace. Bringing together the terms ‘Islam’ and ‘terror’ will only upset Muslims around the world. I would like to ask that this term not be used to describe the jihadist terror of Islamic State,” Erdogan said.

Merkel responded to Erdogan’s comment, saying ‘Islam’ and ‘Islamist’ were not the same thing and that the German nation had stood against all kinds of terror.


“Religious freedoms are very important for me. In Germany we are doing everything we can to enable Muslims to practice their beliefs freely. Our people have the utmost respect for Muslims,” Merkel said.

The leadership of the Chechen Republic has received a task to send two battalions of 600 people each to Syria.

Apti Bolotkhanov, a participant of the warfare in Donbas, will supposedly command one of them, the "Novaya Gazeta" has reported today with reference to its anonymous sources.

These sources include employees of one of the ROVDs (District Interior Divisions) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), where, according to their story, ten persons have been recruited into a special squadron, who are now "involved in intensive physical and combat training," and can be sent to Syria to take part in a ground operation. Similar squadrons have been recruited in other ROVDs.

"The authorities are seeking to recruit to 'Syrian' battalions members of those Chechen families, whose relatives had already gone to fight for the 'Islamic State' (IS) banned in Russia," states the article of the "Novaya Gazeta", adding that Adam Delimkhanov, a State Duma MP from Chechnya, is personally responsible for the mission; and the above Apti Bolotkhanov, who fought in Donbas for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, may be in command of one of the battalions.

So far, no comments have been made by the leadership of Chechnya and Chechen law enforcement bodies on the information about the battalions prepared for departure to Syria. Hmmm......If Al Nusra is responsible for the death of the Russian ambassador.....their days are numbered.

Pakistan has been ranked the second worst country in the world for gender equality for a second year in a row.

The World Economic Forum’s global gender gap ranked Pakistan at a dismal 143 with a 0.556 score. Pakistan ranked just above Yemen among 144 countries, performing way behind India and Bangladesh which ranked at 87 and 72 respectively. War torn Syria performed better than Pakistan with a score of 142.

South Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan secured 100th, 110th, 115th and 121st spots respectively.

In the overall ranking, Iceland took the first spot, followed by Finland and Norway. Interestingly, the United States, with a rank of 45, saw a drop in its rankings owing to decrease on Economic Participation and Opportunity.

In December last year, a UN report said Pakistan ranked 121, better than India and Afghanistan in gender equality.

NATO will not participate in combat operations in Syria and Iraq, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told a conference on Afghanistan on Wednesday.

"NATO will not be part of combat operations. We have already started training Iraqi officers in Jordan, we will soon start to train Iraqi officers in Iraq, and we will also start to provide support with AWACS surveillance planes to the international coalition fighting ISIL," Stoltenberg said.

Speaking about the alliance’s actions in Afghanistan, Stoltenberg stressed that NATO believes it is more important to provide assistance to Kabul in ensuring the country’s security. "As you know we have ended our combat operations in Afghanistan so what we do now is support the Afghan forces," he said in a doorstep statement before the European Union-hosted Brussels conference on Afghanistan. Hmmmm........Erdo....you're on your own.

Turkey fears Fethullah Gulen, the cleric it accuses of orchestrating a failed coup that killed hundreds of civilians and led to a severe crackdown on his followers, is about to flee to Canada from his long exile in Pennsylvania.

This would be “a landmine for our relationship,” said Cemalettin Kani Torun, deputy chair of the Turkish parliament’s foreign affairs committee, and leader of a cross-party delegation that is in Canada this week trying to raise awareness of what it calls the terrorist threat posed by Gulen and his followers.

He pointed to several indications, including rumors Gulen has purchased a property in Ontario, Canada’s lack of an extradition treaty with Turkey, and the upcoming visit of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to Turkey to discuss Gulen’s possible extradition on charges of plotting to kill President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and seize power for himself.


He also accused Canadian officials, MPs, “policy chiefs,” and “many high-level people they think they can use in future” of accepting bribes, in the form of trips to Turkey, from Gulen’s organization.

He is “a terrorist man” said Izzet Ulvi Yonter, MP for Istanbul and a member of the Nationalist Movement Party, in a media conference with the delegation at the Turkish consulate in Toronto on Wednesday.

After meetings in Ottawa and Montreal, they are to meet Thursday with MP Omar Alghabra, parliamentary secretary to the minister of foreign affairs.

Gulen’s followers, who call their movement Hizmet, meaning service in Turkish, are well-established in Canada. Their immigration to Canada is as old as the movement, which began in Turkey in the 1960s. Read the full story here.

Syrian gay refugee Muhammed Wisam Sankari left his house in Aksaray on the night of 23 July. He was found dead in Yenikapi on 25 July. He was beheaded and his body mutilated beyond identification. Wisam’s killers have not been caught. Wisam, who was previously threatened, kidnapped by a crowded group of men, and raped, was trying to go to another country as a refugee because his life was in danger. After the murder, we listened to Wisam’s housemates Rayan, Diya and Gorkem tell us about what Wisam went through, what it is like to be an LGBTI refugee in Turkey, and the problems refugees face. They spoke to KaosGL.org about the murder that was so clearly in the making, how the authorities did not take any preventive measures, and their anxieties about “who is next”.

Rayan, who has known Wisam for a year, says “He was feeling very insecure recently. When we asked him, he would not tell us much” and explains that Wisam had been threatened and kidnapped before. He said they had difficulties even walking on the streets of Aksaray where they lived and where crowded male groups wielding knives had threatened them several times, saying they wanted to rape them. According to Rayan, Wisam experienced the following:

“We were staying in a different house before and we had to leave that house just because we are gay. People around would constantly stare at us. We did not do anything immoral? About five months ago, a group kidnapped Wisam in Fatih. They took him to a forest, beat him and raped him. They were going to kill him but Wisam saved himself by jumping at the road. We complained to the Police Headquarters but nothing happened.”

Gorkem is also Wisam’s friend and he was among the people who went to identify the body after Wisam was killed. Gorkem tells the story of Wisam’s disappearance and the news of his death in tears:

“That night Wisam left the house. We were already anxious because of the threats. We told him not to go but he said he was going out for 15-20 minutes. He didn’t come home all night. The next day, we panicked when we couldn’t reach him. We went to the Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM). They directed us to Fatih Police Headquarters. We did not even know how to get there or what to say.
“On Sunday police called us. We went to Yenikapi with Rayan. They had cut Wisam violently. So violent that two knives had broken inside him. They had beheaded him. His upped body was beyond recognition, his internal organ were out. We could identify our friend from his pants.”

Diya says they live in fear and with the thought of “who is next” following Wisam’s death and says they are afraid to go out on the street:

“I am so scared. I feel like everyone is staring at me on the street. I was kidnapped twice before. They let me go in Cerkezkoy and I barely got home one time. I went to the UN for my identification but they did not even respond to that. No one cares about us. They just talk. I get threats over the phone. I speak calmly so something does not happen. It does not matter if you are Syrian or Turkish, if you are gay you are everyone’s target. They want sex from you and when you don’t they just tag along. I don’t have identification, who would protect me? Who is next?”

Rome and Ankara bickered yesterday (2 August) over an Italian investigation into accusations that Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan’s son Bilal laundered money.

In an interview with Rainews24 TV, Erdoğan stressed that his son Bilal could not return to Italy for studies due to a money-laundering probe by prosecutors in the northern city of Bologna, where Bilal had been studying. Erdoğan warned that this could affect bilateral relations.

“If my son came back to Italy at this moment, he could be arrested”, Turkish President stressed, adding that “this could even cause problems for our relationship with Italy”.

Bilal, 35, went to Italy in 2015 to finish a doctorate. According to Reuters, it was not clear when he left, but a legal source said he had been back in Turkey for some time. He denies wrongdoing.

Erdogan also urged Italian judges to focus on the mafia and not his son, triggering the strong reaction of the Italian premier.

The money laundering investigation followed accusations by Murat Hakan Uzan, an exiled member of one of Turkey’s richest families and an opponent of the president, a legal source said.

Italian press reported prosecutors were looking into sums of money allegedly brought to Italy from Turkey. In July, a Bologna court allowed them to extend their investigation by six months.

Bilal’s lawyer Giovanni Trombini said his client declared that “all his economic and financial activity is totally transparent and legal, and the accusations are completely unfounded”.


Bilal, one of the Turkish president’s four children, has shipping and maritime assets and controls several oil tankers through his company and partnerships in other firms.

An attempted Turkish military coup appeared to crumble in the early hours of Saturday after crowds answered President Tayyip Erdogan's call to take to the streets to support him.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Saturday 161 people, excluding putschists, were killed and 1,440 wounded in the coup attempt against the government. He added that 2,839 soldiers are now detained on suspicion of involvement.

Yildirim described the putsch bid as a "black stain" on Turkish democracy. He was speaking outside his Cankaya palace in Ankara flanked by top general Hulusi Akar who was held during the coup attempt.

Nearly 200 unarmed soldiers at the Turkish military headquarters have meanwhile surrendered as special troops are currently securing the complex, an official said. In addition, some 104 coup plotters were killed, the acting army chief General Umit Dundar said in televised appearance on Saturday.


Erdogan, who had been holidaying on the coast when the coup was launched, flew into Istanbul before dawn on Saturday and was shown on TV appearing among a crowd of supporters outside the airport, which the coup plotters had failed to secure.

The uprising was an "act of treason", and those responsible would pay a heavy price, Erdogan told reporters at a hastily arranged news conference. Arrests of officers were under way, and it would go higher up the ranks, culminating in the cleansing of the military, Erdogan added.




Gunfire and explosions had rocked both the main city Istanbul and capital Ankara in a chaotic night after soldiers took up positions in both cities and ordered state television to read out a statement declaring they had taken power.

But by early Saturday, Reuters journalists saw around 30 pro-coup soldiers surrender their weapons after being surrounded by armed police in Istanbul's central Taksim square.

They were taken away in police vans as a fighter jet repeatedly screeched overhead at low altitude, causing a boom that shook surrounding buildings and shattered windows. Hmmm........The army coup failed......The Islamist coup succeeded.

A Russian special forces officer has been killed near Syria's Palmyra, a military representative at the Russian base in Syria was quoted as saying by Russian agencies Thursday.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) has chosen March 8th, which marks International Women’s Day (IWD), to announce the launch of their Women’s Boat to Gaza (WBG) project.

The Women’s Boat to Gaza will set sail mid-September of this year and plans to dock at a number of Mediterranean ports along its route and arrive Gaza on October the 1st.

The FFC’s fourth mission (FF4) will be sailed by an all women crew and will carry aboard, notable women from all over the world in order to highlight the undeniable contributions which have been made by Palestinian women to the resistance movement. Palestinian women have been central to the struggle in Gaza, the West Bank, inside the Green Line and in the diaspora.

‘One of our goals is to highlight this struggle and the devastating effects it has had on women, often left alone, sifting through rubble to take care of their families when their husbands are imprisoned or murdered’ said Wendy Goldsmith, of the Canadian Boat to Gaza campaign. ‘On International Women’s Day, and on every day, we stand with these brave and resilient women, and will send the Women’s Boat to Gaza to let them know they are not alone and to end the illegal blockade of Gaza.’

The day’s big winner was without question the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). The party ran a xenophobic campaign that played on public fears about refugees. It took nearly a quarter of the votes in Saxony-Anhalt, where it finished second. The party, which appeared on the ballot for the first time, won more than 10 percent of the vote in the other two states as well, signaling broad regional opposition to Merkel’s stance on refugees.

All of the established parties took a thrashing in at least one state. The Greens, for example, won Baden-Württemberg but collapsed in Rhineland Palatinate. The Social Democrats held Rhineland Palatinate but slumped in the other two states to historic lows.

But no party was hit harder than Merkel’s CDU, with declining support across the board. The result will have profound political implications for the chancellor both in Germany and Europe.

For years, Germany appeared to be an island in Europe as the only major country without a strong far-right populist movement. Political scientists and columnists debated the degree to which the German anomaly was rooted in the trauma of the country’s 20th century history.

Turns out these voters were always there, they just weren’t voting. In all three states that held elections Sunday, the main source of the AfD’s support was from voters who hadn’t cast a ballot in the last election. It also poached hundreds of thousands of voters from the established parties, in particular, Merkel’s CDU. The AfD’s strong showing reflects deep dissatisfaction in many parts of Germany with the political establishment.

Support for such parties in other countries has proved volatile. While the refugee backlash proved to be a perfect match for the AfD’s anti-foreigner message, support for such parties in other countries has proved volatile.

Nonetheless, that the party managed to capture between 12.5 percent and 24 percent of the vote in its first running in the three states that held elections on Sunday is nothing short of stunning. As critics within the EU parliament scolded the provisional EU deal with Turkey, skeptics in Germany also took aim at the agreement, with the leftist Die Linke party likening the deal to Turkish "blackmail."

On the other side of the political spectrum, the right-wing tabloid newspaper, Bild, was equally critical of the deal, with an online editorial accusing EU leaders of planning to "spend billions to support and even accelerate Turkey's path towards becoming an authoritarian religious state based on violence, just to ensure that the regime there takes the refugees off our hands".

More than 12 million Germans are set to elect regional parliaments in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt, with polls suggesting Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is to be heavily punished for its open-door refugee policy.

In the CDU's traditional stronghold of Baden-Württemberg, a recent poll suggested the party's support had dropped by more than 10 percentage points, placing it second behind the Green Party. While elsewhere, increased support for the anti-immigration Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) party was expected to further erode CDU votes.
