German regional elections - big winner was without question the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).
German regional elections - big winner was without question the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).
The day’s big winner was without question the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). The party ran a xenophobic campaign that played on public fears about refugees. It took nearly a quarter of the votes in Saxony-Anhalt, where it finished second. The party, which appeared on the ballot for the first time, won more than 10 percent of the vote in the other two states as well, signaling broad regional opposition to Merkel’s stance on refugees.
All of the established parties took a thrashing in at least one state. The Greens, for example, won Baden-Württemberg but collapsed in Rhineland Palatinate. The Social Democrats held Rhineland Palatinate but slumped in the other two states to historic lows.
But no party was hit harder than Merkel’s CDU, with declining support across the board. The result will have profound political implications for the chancellor both in Germany and Europe.
For years, Germany appeared to be an island in Europe as the only major country without a strong far-right populist movement. Political scientists and columnists debated the degree to which the German anomaly was rooted in the trauma of the country’s 20th century history.
Turns out these voters were always there, they just weren’t voting. In all three states that held elections Sunday, the main source of the AfD’s support was from voters who hadn’t cast a ballot in the last election. It also poached hundreds of thousands of voters from the established parties, in particular, Merkel’s CDU. The AfD’s strong showing reflects deep dissatisfaction in many parts of Germany with the political establishment.
Support for such parties in other countries has proved volatile. While the refugee backlash proved to be a perfect match for the AfD’s anti-foreigner message, support for such parties in other countries has proved volatile.
Nonetheless, that the party managed to capture between 12.5 percent and 24 percent of the vote in its first running in the three states that held elections on Sunday is nothing short of stunning. It suggests that AfD, which has morphed from an anti-euro movement into the kind of right-wing populist party typical across Europe, is here to stay.
The CDU and the CSU, its more conservative Bavarian sister, will likely be tempted to try to recapture the support they’ve lost on their right flank.
So far, those attempts have largely failed, as voters opted for the original. Hmmm......As i predicted months ago ! In my opinion this doesn't mean that all voters of AfD are right extreme , just if their current leadership doesn't act on their grievances they will look for an alternative that will. Turkey’s bid for EU membership makes the case for Brexit – Farage.
Turkey’s bid for EU membership makes the case for Brexit – Farage. (RT).
UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage says Britain’s
upcoming referendum on EU membership is a vote on whether the UK wants
to enter political union with Turkey, a state he described as
“increasingly Islamist and authoritarian.”
Farage made the remarks in
a speech to fellow MEPs in Brussels, during which he also accused
Turkey of blackmailing the EU into accepting its proposals to address
the ongoing migrant crisis.
The comments come after the EU agreed to speed up Turkey’s accession process to the EU and pay Ankara €3 billion (US$3.3 billion) in aid in return for the country accepting tens of thousands of extra refugees.
Farage told MEPs on Wednesday that if Turkey joined the EU it would make Britain more vulnerable to terrorism. The comments come after the EU agreed to speed up Turkey’s accession process to the EU and pay Ankara €3 billion (US$3.3 billion) in aid in return for the country accepting tens of thousands of extra refugees.
“The historic error made by Chancellor Merkel last year by saying all can come has led directly to this mess and now we are being blackmailed by Turkey. I wish that David Cameron was as good at negotiations as the Turks are,” he said.“So we are going to go into political union with a country that has got borders with Iraq, Iran and Syria, a country that is poorer than anybody else in the European Union and give free movement to 75 million people. And join up with a government that is increasingly Islamist and authoritarian.
“Well this referendum in Britain is all about what is the safest option. It is pretty clear to me that a vote to remain is a vote for Turkey, a vote to remain is a vote for massively increased immigration into Britain and a vote to remain is a vote that makes Britain more vulnerable to terrorism. It is safer to vote to leave and take back control of our borders,” he added. Hmmm....... Erdogan Made the EUnuchs an Offer They Couldn't Refuse. Read the full story here.

Merkel's CDU Set for Regional clobbering as Critics Slam Turkey-EU Deal. (SP).
Despite German Chancellor Angela Merkel describing the recently announced EU-Turkey refugee deal as a "breakthrough" towards solving the current crisis, many critics at home remain unconvinced, with Merkel's party tipped for heavy losses in regional elections this weekend.
As critics within the EU parliament scolded the provisional EU deal with Turkey, skeptics in Germany also took aim at the agreement, with the leftist Die Linke party likening the deal to Turkish "blackmail."
On the other side of the political spectrum, the right-wing tabloid newspaper, Bild, was equally critical of the deal, with an online editorial accusing EU leaders of planning to "spend billions to support and even accelerate Turkey's path towards becoming an authoritarian religious state based on violence, just to ensure that the regime there takes the refugees off our hands".
More than 12 million Germans are set to elect regional parliaments
in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt,
with polls suggesting Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is to be
heavily punished for its open-door refugee policy.
In the CDU's traditional stronghold of Baden-Württemberg, a recent poll suggested the party's support had dropped by more than 10 percentage points, placing it second behind the Green Party. While elsewhere, increased support for the anti-immigration Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) party was expected to further erode CDU votes.
The elections are seen as a litmus test of public opinion on Merkel's refugee policies, amid rising anger over the chancellor's refusal to place an upper cap on the number of refugees Germany was willing to accept. Read the full story here.

EU-Summit Draft: Balkan Route will be closed, “resettlement” of Syrian refugees from Turkey to EU countries.

EU-Summit Draft: Balkan Route will be closed, “resettlement” of Syrian refugees from Turkey to EU countries. HT: KeepTalkingGreece.
The
European Commission has allegedly prepared a Draft proposal that the EU
leaders will be called to sign tomorrow Monday in Brussels. “The
European Union leaders plan to officially announce the Closure of the
Balkan Route for refugees and the internal borders of Schengen for
economic migrants.” According to an exclusive story published by
Austrian newspaper Der Standard, that has reportedly
obtained a copy of the Conclusions Draft prepared by the European
Commission, “the immediate end of the migrants’ flow and the waving
from Greece to Germany is top priority of the EU policy.” And this will
be decided and announced at the extraordinary EU-Turkey Summit on
Refugee Crisis in Brussels tomorrow Monday.
- “The irregular migrant’s flow along the Balkan Route comes to an end. this Route is now closed.
- Greece must immediately create 50,000 places for potential asylum-seekers, it gets “any help” from EU.
- Migrants with no chance for asylum should be immediately deported to Turkey. An EU-Turkey agreement to this effect will go into effect as of 1. June 2016.
- Turkey will play a constructive role in the external borders control.
- The EU member states will be committed to begin with the “resettlement” of Syrian refugees from Turkey to EU countries.
- The Frontex will be strengthen with more staff at the Greek border to FYROM and Albania The Frontex should take care that the Hot Spots in Greece are in full operation.
- the Europol should help in the fight against smugglers.
The draft also confirms the 700 million euro assistance, although in the September 22nd 2015 decision, the amount was 780 million euro. Together with all previously agreed measures so could be invested in aid to refugees in the coming months be about one billion euros from the EU.
However, the most touching paragraph of the draft is, of course, the following:
The EU leaders will “do the maximum to assist Greece in this difficult moment.” It is about “a collective responsibility of the community, which requires fast and efficient mobilization of all available resources”, but “also the contributions of the Member States.” Hmmm......Anyone noticed how scared they are to put a number up on how many refugees they (EU & Turkey) agreed upon to take? German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who heads the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party has come under further fire from the sister party in the grand coalition, the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU), which is threatening legal action over her refugee policy.
At the annual congress of his CSU party Seehofer made the German
leader look like "a schoolgirl," according to local media. In a
13-minute tirade, he lambasted Merkel over the handling of the refugee
crisis, demanding she set a limit on the number of asylum-seekers the
country would accept.
Seehofer has called for a maximum limit of 200,000 refugees to be accepted in 2016."From our past experience I can say Germany has no problem with an influx of 100,000 or at most 200,000 asylum seekers and refugees fleeing war. This number is manageable and also allows for integration. Anything more than that I think is too much," he said.
In January, Seehofer said he would send Merkel a written request
to restore "orderly conditions" at the nation's borders, through which
over a million migrants and refugees passed in 2015. "If it doesn't
follow, the state government will have no other choice but to file a
suit at the Federal Constitutional Court," Seehofer told Der Spiegel
magazine.
CSU senior lawmaker Peter Ramsauer has now told Seehofer to quickly
submit the threatened action against the refugee policy of the Federal
Government to the Federal Constitutional Court.Read the full story here.

'EU is suffering from a crisis of decision making, that means it will slide into irrelevance' Stratfor Founder. (SP).
The EU has a range of problems that it cannot solve because of fundamental weakness in its decision making that dooms it to irrelevance, George Friedman, US political scientist and founder of think tank Stratfor, told the EurActiv blog on Friday.
"The future of the EU is interesting, because
it cannot make any significant decisions now, and it cannot decide
to dissolve. What will happen is what is happening now: less and less
does Europe make decisions, and when it does, European states pay less
and less attention to them," Friedman said.
He drew attention to the disagreement between the EU's centers
of power in Brussels and Germany, and the governments of Poland and
Hungary. Although representatives of EU institutions have criticized the
politics of those member countries, their governments have continued
to pursue their own course, ignoring the EU's input and consequently
consigning it to irrelevance.
"The Polish decision to change the make-up
of the board of their media and to change their judiciary, this is what
Merkel and the EU have time for. So what does Poland do? The same thing
Hungary did: it ignores it, because it doesn’t matter. The EU will
exist, and will happily sink into irrelevance." Read the full story here.

European Commission President Juncker: 'EU countries 'failed to deliver' on promises to resolve refugee crisis. (RT).
European Union member states have “failed to deliver” on efforts
to resolve the refugee crisis, the head of the European Commission said
on Friday, noting that the commission is not to blame for the current
situation.
He went on to state that the EU Commission is “getting a little tired” of being blamed for not doing enough to resolve the refugee crisis.
So far, just 272 refugees have been moved to other countries out of the 160,000 that EU nations agreed to relocate, AFP reports. The relocation plan, aimed at moving asylum seekers from the frontline countries of Italy and Greece, was approved in October despite opposition from several Eastern European states.
Refusing to give up on the relocation scheme, Juncker warned that the EU is “moving toward a serious crisis in terms of credibility,” and urged member states to fulfill their legal and political responsibilities.
Although German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed refugees into the country, other political leaders have fought back against her decision.
On Thursday, the head of a Bavarian district sent a bus with some 30 refugees to Merkel's Berlin office, stressing that his region – which has borne the brunt of the refugee influx – has reached its capacity. Total fatalities recorded for migrants and refugees in the region were 59 through the year’s first two weeks, not including at least 11 people killed in two bus crashes in Turkey last week. Authorities believe the victims were customers of smugglers supervising their journey to launching points on Turkey’s coast.
At this rate it would mean 620,000 new asylum seekers in 2016, but the rate will probably increase once Spring and Summer comes.

Dutch 'no' to Kiev-EU accord could trip EU crisis: Juncker.
Dutch 'no' to Kiev-EU accord could trip EU crisis: Juncker. (DS).
THE HAGUE: European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker urged Dutch voters Saturday not to oppose an EU cooperation deal with Ukraine, saying such a move "could open the doors to a continental crisis."
A citizens' campaign in the Netherlands spearheaded by three strongly eurosceptic groups garnered more than 300,000 votes needed to trigger a non-binding referendum on the deal, three months from now.
Observers said the vote, set for April 6, pointed more towards broader euroscepticism among the Dutch than actual opposition to the trade deal with Kiev, which fosters deeper cooperation with Brussels.
A Dutch 'no' "could open the doors to a continental crisis," Juncker told the authoritative NRC daily newspaper in an interview published Saturday.
"Let's not change the referendum into a vote about Europe," Juncker urged Dutch voters, adding: "I sincerely hope that (the Dutch) won't vote no for reasons that have nothing to do with the treaty itself."
Should Dutch voters oppose the deal, Russia "stood to benefit most," he said. Read the full story here.

Can the refugee crisis and subsequent rise of Extreme right make the EU fall apart? (Taz).
An official with the EU has voiced a concern that the Union is facing a threat of falling apart.
Gunther Oettinger, European commissioner for digital economy and society, said in an interview with German newspaper Bild on Dec. 30 that there is a threat of disintegration of the EU, TASS news agency reports.
“The European Union has learned to overcome the crises. However, there are more and more countries with unstable or populist governments. I am concerned about it,” he said.
“For the first time I see a serious danger that the EU could fall apart,” Oettinger added.
The commissioner further called for continuing the talks for Western Balkan countries’ joining the EU, saying “however, the conditions for accession to the Union have to be strict.”
Oettinger also voiced scepticism regarding Turkey’s accession to the EU.
“There won’t be Turkey’s accession this decade and maybe during the next one,” he said.

U'S. - Overall Deportations Drop in 2015, 27% for Criminal Aliens.
U'S. - Overall Deportations Drop in 2015, 27% for Criminal Aliens. HT: Judicial watch.
A year after freeing tens of thousands of illegal immigrants convicted of serious crimes, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is distorting annual deportation figures by falsely claiming the number of criminal aliens removed from the U.S. keeps increasing when in fact it’s shrinking drastically.
In fiscal year 2015 deportation figures released this week, DHS celebrates that its enforcement efforts prioritize criminals and threats to public safety as well as national security. The agency created after 9/11 to keep the country safe claims the latest stats show “the number of convicted criminals removed from the interior continued to increase.”
The reality is that deportations of criminal aliens declined 27% from last year—from 86,923 in 2014 to 63,127 in 2015. This serious discrepancy was exposed by the Washington D.C.-based Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), which further reveals that the number of criminal deportations in fiscal year 2015 is less than half of what it was in 2011.Immigration enforcement remains in a state of collapse, according to the official statistics released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today.
- Total deportations by ICE (including both border and interior cases) declined 25% from last year, from 315,943 in 2014 to 235,413 in 2015.
- Interior deportations by ICE declined 31% from last year, from 100,114 in 2014 to 69,478 in 2015.
- Most concerning, deportations of criminal aliens from the interior declined 27% from last year, from 86,923 in 2014 to 63,127 in 2015.
The number of interior deportations is now less than one-third of what it was in 2011, before the Obama administration implemented policy changes that greatly restricted the types of cases that ICE officers and agents could pursue for deportation. The number of criminal alien deportations from the interior is less than half of what it was in 2011.
ICE Director Sarah Saldana said that she was "proud of the numbers" when she testified at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on December 2, 2015.
In a press release announcing the numbers today, DHS falsely says "the number of convicted criminals removed from the interior continued to increase." In fact, only the share of deportations that are of criminals has increased – the actual number has fallen, as noted above. Read the full story here.

EU gives green light German, Swedish temporary re-imposition of border controls.
EU gives green light to German, Swedish temporary border checks. (DS).
The European Commission has formally authorized the temporary re-imposition of border controls by Sweden and Germany's extension of frontier checks to help get a grip on a large influx of asylum seekers, the EU executive said Friday.
With refugees flooding into European Union territory in the worst migrant crisis since World War II, the viability of the EU's Schengen system of open borders is under strain as never before as EU members reintroduce controls at their frontiers.
Sweden, long a haven for people fleeing war and persecution, was the latest EU state to re-establish checks at its borders to stem a tide of migrants coming from Denmark.
Germany reimposed border controls on Sept. 13 and decided to extend them beyond an initial limit of two months foreseen by Schengen rules, using a clause that permits stretching checks to a maximum of six months.
"The temporary reintroduction of border controls between member states is an exceptional possibility explicitly foreseen in and regulated by the Schengen Borders Code, in case of a serious threat to public policy or internal security," the European Commission said in a statement.
The Swedish decision "prima facie appears to be a situation covered by the rules", it said.
The decision replicated similar provisional authorizations granted by the EU executive to Austria, Hungary and Slovenia when they imposed temporary border controls in recent weeks.
"We have no objections to measures that should remain proportionate," a Commission spokeswoman told a regular news briefing. "Saving Schengen is a race against time. And we are determined to win that race," the head of EU leaders, Donald Tusk said after the meeting. Hmmm.........Too late the political face of Europe will be changed coming next election.

The Re-enserfment of Western Peoples.
The Re-enserfment of Western Peoples. (RT).
The re-enserfment of Western peoples is taking place on several levels. One about which I have been writing for more than a decade comes from the offshoring of jobs. Americans, for example, have a shrinking participation in the production of the goods and services that are marketed to them.
These so called "trade partnerships" have nothing to do with trade.
These agreements negotiated in secrecy grant immunity to corporations
from the laws of the countries in which they do busy. This is achieved
by declaring any interference by existing and prospective laws and
regulations on corporate profits as restraints on trade for which
corporations can sue and fine "sovereign" governments.
For example, the ban in France and other counries on GMO products would be negated by the Trans-Atlantic Partnership. Democracy is simply replaced by corporate rule.I have been meaning to write about this at length. However, others, such as Chris Hedges, are doing a good job of explaining the power grab that eliminates representative government.
The corporations are buying power cheaply. They bought the entire US House of Representatives for just under $200 million. This is what the corporations paid Congress to go along with "Fast Track," which permits the corporations' agent, the US Trade Representative, to negotiate in secret without congressional input or oversight. In other words, a US corporate agent deals with corporate agents in the countries that will comprise the "partnership," and this handful of well-bribed people draw up an agreement that supplants law with the interests of corporations. No one negotiating the partnership represents the peoples' or public's interests. The governments of the partnership countries get to vote the deal up or down, and they will be well paid to vote for the agreement.
Once these partnerships are in effect, government itself is privatized. There is no longer any point in legislatures, presidents, prime ministers, judges.
Violent revolution throughout the West and the complete elimination
of the One Percent is another possible outcome. Once, for example, the
French people discover that they have lost all control over their diet
to Monsanto and American agribusiness, the members of the French
government that delivered France into dietary bondage to toxic foods are
likely to be killed in the streets. Hmmm......Welcome to 'the dark ages'. Read the full story here.

As winter hits Europe, Nearly 100 mln USD needed to cope with 5,000 refugees/day arrivals.(xinhuanet).
With 5,000 refugees and migrants expected to arrive in Europe daily in winter, the UN refugee agency on Thursday appealed for nearly 100 million U.S. dollars to help Greece and countries in the Balkans to cope with the influx.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) appealed to donors for 95.15 million dollars to make sure emergency shelters are equipped with heating and ensure other measures are in place to protect from the harsh winter weather, said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric at Thursday's daily briefing.
The agency is planning for up to 5,000 arrivals per day between this November and next February, and warned that winter weather could result in further loss of life if adequate measures are not taken urgently, said Dujarric.
"The harsh weather conditions will likely worsen the suffering of refugees and migrants arriving in Greece and traveling through the Balkans," said Dujarric.
The agency's Winterization Plan for the Refugee Crisis in Europe focuses on putting in place measures to support affected countries such as Croatia, Greece, Serbia, Slovenia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, in order to avert the risk of humanitarian tragedy and loss of life during the winter months, according to the UNHCR.

Another three million migrants and refugees to arrive in EU[rabia] by end of 2016.
Another three million migrants and refugees to arrive in EU[rabia] by end of 2016. (DM).
The European Union is predicting that 3 million more migrants could arrive in the 28-nation bloc by the end of next year, with the refugee emergency already providing a stern test of EU capacities to offer shelter and welcome.
More than 700,000 people have come to Europe seeking sanctuary or jobs so far this year, overwhelming reception centers and border authorities.
EU autumn economic forecasts released on Thursday show that based on current migrant entries and a 'technical assumption' about future flows, arrival rates are unlikely to slow before 2017.
The EU's executive Commission said that 'overall, an additional 3 million persons is assumed to arrive in the EU over the forecast period.'
On Thursday, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was a first-hand witness, seeing migrants and refugees reaching the Greek island of Lesbos by dinghy as his motorcade traveled from Lesbos airport to a new registration facility.
'We realized that is a criminal process being carried out by the smugglers who cram refugees onto vessels that are not boats, but makeshift inflatables,' he said. 'What's happening in the Aegean Sea is a crime.'
The flow of migrants into Greece's mainland and beyond was turning to a trickle on Thursday, however, as a ferry strike entered its fourth day and trapped thousands of people on the eastern Aegean islands.
Most people are arriving in Europe through Italy and Greece, while Hungary and Austria have been affected by heavy migrant flows. Germany and Sweden are also feeling the impact.
Those nations, among others, want the EU to apply its budget rules with flexibility, taking into account Europe's biggest refugee emergency in well over half a century, and avoid reprimanding member states for excessive spending and deficits.
The Commission said Thursday that Sweden, which has the highest share of refugees per capita, is likely to feel the economic impact most, perhaps 0.5 percent of its gross domestic product this year. Hmmmm.......Why pay Turkey over $ 3 Billion if so many are still coming through? Read the full story here.
