TORONTO -- At least eight synagogues in four cities across Canada have received anti-Semitic letters calling for the death of Jews, B'nai Brith Canada said.

Four synagogues in Toronto, two in Montreal, one in Hamilton and one in Edmonton have reported being sent the hate mail, the Jewish advocacy group said Tuesday.

A photo on B'nai Brith Canada's website shows the letter containing the words "Jewry must perish," and a swastika scrawled onto a blood-soaked Star of David.

There were 1,728 anti-Semitic incidents reported throughout the country in 2016, according to B'nai Brith's statistics. That's a 26 per cent increase from 2015 and the highest number of incidents ever seen by the organization, which has been tracking anti-Semitism for 35 years.

Ramzan Kadyrov is ready to resign and spend the rest of his life guarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The head of Chechnya has stated this in connection with the conflict situation around the above mosque.

"I myself am ready to resign and serve in structures that ensure the safety of this holy place for Muslims," he wrote in his Telegram, adding that he is against using the war on terrorism as an "instrument of political struggle against Muslims."

On July 14, after the attack on policemen, Israeli authorities reinforced security measures on the Temple Mount by installing metal detectors at the entrance. After that, mass clashes of Palestinians with Israeli policemen led to victims, the RIA “Novosti” reports.

According to the Israeli newspaper “Haaretz”, Muslim leaders found sufficient the concessions of Israeli authorities, who removed the metal detectors and CCTV cameras from the vicinity of the Temple Mount.

Siraj Wahhaj was born as Jeffrey Kearse on March 11, 1950 in Brooklyn, New York, where he was raised in the Baptist faith. He studied biology education at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, Canada.

Wahhaj developed an interest in Islam shortly after the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., which prompted him to go "looking for more militancy." He found that militancy in the black separatist movement and became involved with the Nation of Islam (NOI) and its leader, Louis Farrakhan, under whose mentorship Wahhaj converted to Islam in 1969. Wahhaj was also influenced by such major NOI figures as Elijah Muhammed, Warith Deen Muhammed, and Malcolm X. Under the sway of such individuals, Wahhaj in the early 1970s became a Nation of Islam minister and began promoting a separatist doctrine which held that “white people are devils.” (“I preached it. I taught it,” he now acknowledges.) But before long, Wahhaj became cognizant of NOI's differences from mainstream Islam, left the organization, and pursued a career as a traditional Sunni Muslim cleric.

Wahhaj claims to have completed his training as a cleric at Umm al Qura University in Mecca, Saudi Arabia in 1978. But that university was not established until 1981. Prior to that time, it was known as The Colleges of Shari’ah and Education and was a branch of the Jeddah-based King Abdul Aziz University, which was renowned as a hub for young radical terrorists. Indeed, Osama bin Laden, Sheikh Abdullah Azzam, and Wael Jalaidan—all co-founders of al Qaeda—were affiliated with King Abdul Aziz University in the 1970s and early '80s.

In 1981 Wahhaj founded his own mosque, known as Masjid Al-Taqwa, which initially had a membership of fewer than 25 people and was based inside a friend's Brooklyn apartment. Today, however, Wahhaj’s large Al-Taqwa mosque is recognized by Muslims all around the world.

On numerous occasions during Masjid Al-Taqwa's early years, Wahhaj invited Omar Abdel-Rahman, leader of the terrorist organization known as the Islamic Group, to address his (Wahhaj's) congregation as a guest preacher.

Notwithstanding his ties to King Abdul Aziz University and Omar Abdel-Rahman, Wahhaj, during his first decade as an Imam, managed to cultivate an image as a moderate in the eyes of the American public. As such, in 1991 he was given the honor of being the first Muslim ever to recite an opening prayer before a meeting of the U.S. House of Representatives.

That same year, however, Wahhaj, in a speech to the Islamic Association of North Texas, characterized Operation Desert Storm (the U.S.-led military campaign to drive Saddam Hussein's invading forces out of Kuwait) as "one of the most diabolical plots ever in the annals of history." Moreover, he predicted that America would fall unless it "accepts the Islamic agenda."

In a September 1991 speech in Toronto, titled “The Afghanistan Jihad,” Wahhaj told his fellow Muslims:

“Those who struggle for Allah, it doesn’t matter what kind of weapons [you use], I’m telling you it doesn’t matter! You don’t need nuclear weapons or even guns! If you have faith in Allah and a knife! If Allah wants you to win, you will win! Because Allah is the only one who fights. And when his hand is over your hand, whoever is at war against my friends, I declare war on them.... The Americans are not your friends ... The Canadians are not your friends ... The Europeans are not your friends. Your friend is Allah, the Messenger and those who believe. These people will never be satisfied with you until you follow their religion ...”

Two months later, Wahhaj urged U.S. Muslims to become politically active as a means of augmenting the influence of their faith: “As long as you remember that if you get involved in politics, you have to be very careful that your leader is for Allah. You don’t get involved in politics because it’s the American thing to do. You get involved in politics because politics are a weapon to use in the cause of Islam.”[1]

In a 1992 sermon, Wahhaj emphasized the importance of jihad to his Al-Taqwa mosque congregation: “I will never ever tell people, 'don’t be violent, that is not the Islamic way.' The violence has to be selected.... Islam is the only answer because it is only Islam that we do it for Allah.... [We are] commanded to do jihad.... [W]hen Allah commands us to fight we are not stopping, no one will stop us.”

In an autumn 1992 address to an Islamic gathering in New Jersey, Wahhaj expressed his desire to have Muslims seize control of the United States and replace the country's constitutional government with an Islamic caliphate. “If we were united and strong,” Wahhaj said, “we'd elect our own emir [leader] and give allegiance to him.... [T]ake my word, if 6-8 million Muslims unite in America, the country will come to us.”

Wahhaj has revisited this theme Islamic dominion over the United States many times over the years. For example, he has said:

• “Islam is better than democracy. Allah will cause his deen [Islam as a complete way of life], Islam, to prevail over every kind of system, and you know what? It will happen.”[2] (In a related assertion, Wahhaj has called the Islamic way of life a preferable alternative to the “garbage can” of American culture.)
• “In time, democracy will crumble, and there will be nothing, and the only thing that will remain will be Islam.”
• “Wherever you came from, you came to America. And you came for one reason—for one reason only—to establish Allah’s deen [Islam as a complete way of life], as a servant of Allah.” 

Shortly after the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the U.S. State Department designatedSudan, which had become a safe-haven for Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda, as a state sponsor of terrorism. In response to that designation, Wahhaj said defiantly:

“May Allah bless Sudan … these are people who want to establish the Shari’ah, establish Quran, and Sunnah, they want to establish the religion and therefore hated by the government of the USA…. I’m not going to make you comfortable because our book, the book we believe in, is not Dale Carnegie’s, How to Win Friends and Influence People; But it’s the Quran.”

Wahhaj has long supported every facet of Sharia Law, including its call for brutal punishments like the removal of one's hands as the penalty for theft, and death by stoning as the penalty for adultery. By Wahhaj's reckoning, such harsh measures are wholly justified by Islamic scripture. As he proclaimed in a May 1992 sermon: “I would cut off the hands of my own daughter [if she stole] because Allah stands for Justice.” On another occasion, Wahhaj said: “If Allah says 100 strikes, 100 strikes it is. If Allah says cut off their hand, you cut off their hand. If Allah says stone them to death, through the Prophet Muhammad, then you stone them to death, because it’s the obedience of Allah and his messenger—nothing personal.”

Wahhaj has been a longtime supporter of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an organization that seeks to create a worldwide Islamic caliphate, or kingdom, governed by Sharia Law. In the summer of 1994, Wahhaj attended a Hizb ut-Tahrir conference in London, where Islamists openly called for jihad, denounced democracy, and declared that “the Islamic system is the only alternative for mankind.” Less than a week later, back in the U.S., Wahhaj lauded Hizb ut-Tahrir's "scholarly brothers" for their "good insight" and "their pushing for the Khilafah [Caliphate]."

In 1995, U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White named Wahhaj as a possible co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Soon thereafter, Wahhaj stated during one of his Al-Taqwa sermons, “I’m not frightened by no list, by no government! I thank Allah. I’m honored that they thought enough of me to put me on a list.”[3]

Moreover, a number of congregants at Wahhaj’s Al-Taqwa mosque were charged and convicted of having provided material support for Islamic terrorists during the period leading up to the World Trade Center bombing of '93. Wahhaj testified in court on behalf of each of them.

One of those congregants, Clement Rodney Hampton-El (a.k.a. "Dr. Rashid"), was a memberof Jamaat al Fuqra, a Black Nationalist organization whose mission is to “purify” Islam through violence.[4] Wahhaj, stating that he had known Hampton-El for ten years, called the defendant “one of the most respected brothers” in his entire mosque.

Another Al-Taqwa congregant, Ibrahim El Gabrowny, was a bomb-maker who assistedIslamic Group leader Omar Abdel-Rahman in his terrorism-related pursuits. When U.S. authorities searched El Gabrowny’s home, they found taped messages from his cousin, the terrorist El Sayyid Nosair,[5] urging violence and jihad: “Without fighting there will not be justice on earth.… We cannot establish God’s rules on earth except by fighting.” Testifying at El Gabrowny's trial, Wahhaj voiced flattering admiration for the defendant, who ultimately was sentenced to 57 years in prison.

Yet another noteworthy Al-Taqwa congregant was a diplomat of the Sudanese Mission to the United Nations, Siddig Ibrahim Siddig Ali, whom federal authorities described as the “ring leader” of the 1993 World Trade Center attack. Ali told an FBI informant that “he ha[d] connections that [would] allow him to drive a car carrying a bomb into a parking lot in the United Nations building.” He also conspired to carry out attacks in Israel and referred to Jews as “sons of monkeys and pigs.” “The sword is to be absolutely used and implemented,” he declared. “This is as a principle.”[6] At Ali's trial, Wahhaj testified about his own favorable impression of the defendant, adding: “We don’t accept the idea of terrorism. Our mosque is open to all, but not to fanatics.” In the end, Ali was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

When Omar Abdel-Rahman was on trial in 1995 for conspiring to overthrow the U.S. government, Wahhaj testified as a character witness on the defendant's behalf. DescribingRahman as a “respected scholar ... bold ... [and] a strong preacher of Islam,” Wahhaj said that he considered it an honor to have had an opportunity to host Rahman at his mosque. 

In February 2001 Wahhaj, along with Ihsan Bagby, founded the Muslim Alliance of North America (MANA), an umbrella group for African-American mosques and Islamic centers. Wahhaj went on to serve as the organization's president, and to this day he sits on its executive committee.

In August and September of 2001, just prior to the 9/11 attacks, Wahhaj was a guest speaker at a "jihad camp" in Pennsylvania, where adult participants took part in paintball practice and learned about the glorious afterlife that awaited Islamic martyrs who died for the cause of their faith. The camp was organized by Safet Abid Catovic, a leader of the Benevolence International Foundation, a "charity" that would be shut down in November 2002 on charges that it had provided funding for al Qaeda.

Soon after the horrors of 9/11, Wahhaj spoke at a convention in Baltimore sponsored by the Islamic Circle of North America.

On October 20, 2001, Wahhaj, angered by U.S. government's post-9/11 efforts to identify and apprehend Islamic extremists, told a meeting of Muslim activists in Houston:

"[T]his [American] government has already sent in[to] every major [mosque], agent provocateurs. Most of you don't know what that is. All you know is about spies. The government has spies, they have infiltrators. But there's some difference from being a spy and an agent provocateur. What an agent provocateur does, he goes to a [mosque], he looks just like you. He's got a beard just like your beard... And their job is to entrap you no different than the prostitute, the police women dressed as a prostitute, whereas he's coming to the [mosque], dressed as a Muslim."

With similar derision, Wahhaj has referred to the FBI and CIA as the “real terrorists” whom Americans—particularly Muslim Americans—should fear.

In June 2004 Wahhaj spoke at an event titled “Next Generation Muslims—Education & Survival,” which was organized by the Universal Heritage Foundation, a Florida-based outpost of Islamism and anti-Semitism.

At a 2005 Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) banquet in Georgia, Wahhaj expressed support and sympathy for Rafik Abdus Sabir and Tarik Shah, terror operatives who had recently been indicted for plotting to open an al Qaeda training camp in the United States. Both Sabir (a medical doctor who had pledged to fly to Saudi Arabia to provide medical aid and training for al Qaeda terrorists) and Shah (the son of a former Malcolm X aide who was himself associated with the Nation of Islam) had sworn allegiance to Osama bin Laden.

In August 2006 Wahhaj was a guest speaker at an event organized by Young Muslims, where he shared the stage with Mazen Mokhtarm, youth director for the Muslim American Society's New Jersey chapter. Mokhtarm has referred to the terrorist group Hamas as a "heroic" organization.

Wahhaj was one of the six Islamic clerics who were involved in the infamous “Flying Imams” controversy of November 21, 2006. Having just attended a conference of the North American Imams Federation in Minneapolis, Wahhaj and five fellow Imams were among the passengers waiting to board US Airways Flight 300, which was scheduled to fly from Minneapolis to Phoenix. Shortly before boarding, a number of passengers in the airport terminal heard the Imams making anti-American comments vis à vis the Iraq War, and praying loudly (with repeated chants of "Allah, Allah, Allah"). Then, when the Imams boarded the flight, they sat in separate sections of the plane; some of them asked for seat-belt extensions (which the flight attendants thought the Imams did not need). When a number of passengers expressed alarm regarding the Imams' behavior (and concern that the seat-belt extensions might be used as weapons), authorities required the Imams to deboard the plane prior to takeoff. Wahhaj and his cohorts subsequently depicted themselves as victims of “Islamophobia.”

Over the course of his career as a religious leader, Wahhaj has held numerous prestigious and influential posts. He has served as a board of advisors member of the American Muslim Council; a national board member of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR); vice president of the Islamic Society of North America; a member of the Majlis al Shura, a consultative council of Islamic scholars; executive committee chairman of the Muslim Alliance of North America; a board of trustees member of the North American Imams Federation; and a board of advisors member of the North American Islamic Trust (1989-1993).

Since the early 2000s, Wahhaj has been the designated fundraiser at many CAIR banquets. In that role, he has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the organization.[7]  In October 2009, Wahhaj was a featured speaker at CAIR's 15th anniversary celebration in Washington, DC. A noteworthy fellow speaker at that event was Jesse Jackson.

Islam scholar Stephen Schwartz has said the following about Wahhaj:

• "People like Wahhaj went from Nation of Islam to Saudi Wahhabism, and they preach those extreme views to their followers.... Wahhabism is hostile to all 'nonbelievers,' to secular society, certainly to American society, and it can fit with black radical thought. Despite denouncing Islamic terrorism on a number of occasions, Wahhaj has expressed a desire to remain neutral about Osama bin Ladenand his complicity in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He has said: 'I'm just not so sure I want to be one of the ones who say, Yeah, he did it. He's a horrible man.'"[8]
• "He's a hatemonger, there's no question about it. He's the No. 1 advocate of radical Islamic ideology among African-Americans. His stuff is very appealing to young Muslims who are on a radical path."[9]
• "He'll get up and say American Muslims are under attack, that their civil rights are being denied. He'll say that anybody who questions the community of these Muslim groups, that they're agents of the Zionists. He'll say that the criticism of CAIR, and of him, is all racism, the evil work of the Zionists and the media, and he'll say that America should get out of Afghanistan and any involvement in the Muslim world."[10]

Four years after the Ottoman Empire faded away and withdrew from the land of Israel, the man who wrote the words to Turkey’s national anthem — Mehmet Akif Ersoy — tried to hoist his country’s flag. He slipped a line into the anthem to which the Turks still cling. Arusi describes the flag “waving like the shining sky” and praises it: “Oh coy crescent do not frown, for I am ready to sacrifice myself for you! … If you frown, our blood shed for you will not be worthy.”

But it’s doubtful whether back in 1921 even Ersoy believed that less than 100 years later, flags bearing Turkey’s moon and star would once again wave over the Old City of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount — and under the rule of a Jewish state, no less.

Turkey once again wants to gain a foothold and influence in Jerusalem. It is investing a lot of money to gain its objective. The Turkish national and cultural awakening in the Israeli capital, which is keenly felt by the residents of east Jerusalem, has the backing of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who sees himself as the patron of the Muslim Brotherhood and the man who will reinstate the Ottoman Empire and become the father of the Ottoman caliphate that will one day return — even to Jerusalem.

Turkey is scattering vast sums around east Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount to acquire a foothold and influence here. Erdogan’s loyal partners in this “holy” act are the members of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement, led by Sheikh Raed Salah, which rejects the legitimacy of Israel and which has now been outlawed; and Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, the former mufti of Jerusalem, one of the most extreme figures in Islam who has decreed suicide bombings legitimate and expressed hope that the U.S. and Britain be destroyed. Sabri is currently the head preacher at Al-Aqsa mosque.

Some of the figures are coming to light now thanks Pinhas Inbari, a senior researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, who compiled a comprehensive list of Palestinian organizations currently operating in east Jerusalem for the JCPA.

It turns out that the Turkish money is flowing into Jerusalem via a number of entities, the most important of which is TIKA, an aid organization funded mostly by the Turkish government that sends enormous amounts of money to some 140 countries.

Since 2011, TIKA has been headed by Dr. Serder Cam, who formerly served as chief of Erdogan’s parliamentary staff.

Members of the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center recently discovered that between 2004, when TIKA first established a branch office in Ramallah, and 2014, it invested millions of dollars in no fewer than 63 projects in Jerusalem.

The crescent rises

A quick glance at TIKA’s website, as well as a visit in person, show us that TIKA is investing a great deal of money in rebuilding the Nabi Musa site, which lies between Jerusalem and Jericho and is believed to be the location of Moses’ tomb. Nabi Musa is also where the 1929 riots against the Jewish community in pre-state Israel started.

At the request of the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Youth and Sport, TIKA has also invested in the construction of a sports stadium in the A-Tur neighborhood on the way to the Mount of Olives; in refurbishing the archive of Ottoman and Muslim documents on the Temple Mount; in acquiring a water tank for the benefit of worshippers on the Mount; in rebuilding the Muslim cemetery at the foot of the eastern wall of the Temple Mount, near the Golden Gate; in funding archaeological salvage excavations on the Street of the Chain in the Old City; and plenty of other community and religious projects.

Turkey’s trusted allies in Jerusalem — mainly the Muslim Brotherhood, who maintain ties to the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement — frequently fly Turkish flags on the Temple Mount and along the way to it. TIKA has also printed hundreds of thousands of copies of an informational booklet in three languages (Turkish, Arabic and English) about the 76 Muslim historical sites and buildings in the Al-Aqsa compound. The booklet launch was a festive ceremony attended by members of the Muslim Waqf and representatives of the Turks and the Palestinians.

The crown jewel of Turkey’s activity in Jerusalem was replacing the faded old crescent on top of the Dome of the Rock with a shiny new golden crescent donated by the government of Turkey. It was a Turkish association that provided part of the funding for the buses that in recent years have picked up operatives from the Murabitun and Murabitat fundamentalist groups from Palestinian villages in the Triangle region and shuttled them to the Temple Mount, where they spent years instigating riots and unrest until their organizations were outlawed and banned from the Mount.

The Turkish obsession with Al-Aqsa and the Temple Mount is both consistent and methodical. Dr. Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak, a researcher on Turkey from the Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University, mentions that for years, the Turks sent regular delegations to inspect events involving the archaeological excavations around Mughrabi Bridge and the Western Wall tunnels.

“Mehmet Gormez, chairman of the Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate, is the one who two years ago on Al-Qadr Eve directed the prayer on the Temple Mount, and under Gormez, Jerusalem became a station on the Hajj route [the holy journey to Mecca]. In other words, on the way to Mecca, [Muslims] pray at Al-Aqsa, and only then proceed to Jordan, and from there to Saudi Arabia,” Yanarocak explains.

The researcher also notes that the backdrop of the official TV station of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate now includes an image of Al-Aqsa mosque alongside the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

“Turkish schoolbooks are including Al-Aqsa and Jerusalem more and more, too,” Yanarocak observes.

A reminder: Only a few weeks ago, despite the reconciliation agreement between Israel and Turkey and the supposed end to the Mavi Marmara crisis Erdogan spoke at an international forum of Waqf charities for Al-Quds, the Muslim name for Jerusalem. He called Israeli rule over Jerusalem “an insult” and called on his people and on Muslims worldwide “to protect Jerusalem’s Muslim identity” and ascend the Temple Mount.

Erdogan took that same opportunity to attack Israel’s muezzin bill, which was intended to limit noise from Muslim calls to prayer, and threatened: “We will not allow the muezzin on Al-Aqsa to be silenced. … Any stone that is moved in the city could be significant.”

He also complained that “only” 26,000 Turks visit Jerusalem each year and added that “although that is a larger number than any other Muslim state, it’s much lower than the hundreds of thousands of Americans, Russians and French [who visit].”

Indeed, thanks to Erdogan, Muslim tourism to Jerusalem is changing. Today, it is mainly religious groups who visit Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, then leave.

Yanarocak explains that Erdogan “believes he is the leader of the moderate Sunni world, and he takes every opportunity to stress that he is the descendant of the Ottoman Empire, which ruled Jerusalem for hundreds of years, the heir to Salah a-Din and Suleiman the Magnificent. He defines the Turks as the grandchildren of those two and aspires to restore Islamic rule and the [Turkish] empire to Jerusalem.”

Another Turkish body operating in Jerusalem is the Our Heritage Foundation, which has its headquarters in Istanbul. The heads of the association were among those who welcomed Raed Salah when he arrived in Turkey a few years ago. The organization’s goal is to preserve and renew the Ottoman legacy in Al-Quds. Last May, the head of the foundation revealed the extent of its activity in an interview: In 10 years, the group had invested $40 million in refurbishing 46 mosques and 70 apartments, as well as furnishing hundreds more apartments near the Al-Aqsa compound.

Our Heritage Foundation, which enjoys funding from TIKA, also cares for orphans and renovates schools. This Ramadan [which ends today], it committed to distributing 150,000 meals at the Al-Aqsa compound, and plans to put another $10 million into the same project next year.

“Unprecedented admiration”

For now, Israel is ignoring Turkey’s activity in Jerusalem, other than responses to Erdogan’s wild attacks on Israel, and is doing nothing. The Jordanians are biting their lips, too. The peace treaty between Israel and Jordan obligates Israel to recognize Jordanian precedence regarding Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.

For years, Israel has been upping Jordan’s status on the Temple Mount through gestures and giving up various matters of authority. Israel is also very considerate of the Jordanians’ feelings about the Temple Mount. Historically, Jordan lost two important battles for places holy to Muslims.

The Hashemite dynasty lost its status as guardian of the Islamic holy sites in Mecca and Medina to Saudi Arabia after World War I, and comforted itself with the second-tier guardianship over Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.

When Israel united east and west Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War, Jordan lost those sites, as well. For Jordan, the peace treaty with Israel corrected an error, but now the Turks are threatening to steal their supremacy yet again.

Armenian historian Dr. Georgette Avakian, a resident of the Armenian Quarter of the Old City, is worried about the Turkish activity in the city.

“We see Turkish flags all over the Temple Mount, and on the roads leading there, too. At Damascus Gate, along Hagai Street, there are many shops that fly the Turkish flag. Traditional Turkish foods, Turkish seeds and nuts and Turkish moussaka, have become popular.

“It bothers me sometimes. First, because it’s planned. This isn’t spontaneous, being purchased and is a thought-out move. Turkey is moving into a higher gear in the city. Second, it disturbs me and enrages me as an Armenian, the daughter of a people who were mostly killed in a genocide by the Turks. The Turks are trying to restore something of the prestige and influence they lost here 100 years ago, when their empire collapsed,” Avakian says.

“When I heard a little while ago that the Turks want to put up a monument near the Temple Mount to their soldiers who were killed in World War I, I was angry. I sent a letter to the east Jerusalem newspaper that reported that [story] and asked whether the monument would be to the soldiers who killed my people. They didn’t run my letter,” Avakian continues.

A few weeks ago, Dr. David Koren and Ben Avrahami, advisers to the Jerusalem Municipality on matters of east Jerusalem, published an article in Hashiloah journal covering the changes to east Jerusalem over the years that Israel has governed there. Both Koren and Avrahami discussed the millions of dollars the Turks are sending to associations and establishments in the eastern half of the city to strengthen their own position there at the expense of Israel and Jordan.

The two observed that “the growing involvement of the Erdogan regime, which currently serves as the chief patron of the Muslim Brotherhood movement worldwide, shows that what is happening in Jerusalem is part of a broader gambit of creating regional Turkish hegemony at other players’ expense.”

Koren and Avrahami also wrote that “the biggest loser from Turkey’s growing presence [in Jerusalem] is Jordan, which for years enjoyed the status of guardian of the holy sites as well as the patron of the residents of east Jerusalem.”

The researchers point out that in recent years, Jordan’s status in the city has been “nibbled away, and has now been whittled down to guardianship over 144 dunams [36 acres] of the Temple Mount, as King Abdullah himself has announced. … And even on the Temple Mount, this status is shrinking, and Turkey is entering the vacuum being created, both in the streets of the city and on the Temple Mount.”

Koren and Avrahami have the impression that “Erdogan’s Turkey currently enjoys unprecedented admiration among the residents of east Jerusalem. Its flags are flown on rooftops and even at the Temple Mount plaza, and Turkish culture is being embraced, as we see in Turkish language classes and the presence of Turkish food and music. Their involvement is made possible thanks to their cooperation with Muslim Brotherhood officials in the city, who often function as their allies and executors.

“According to sources in east Jerusalem with whom we speak frequently, the Turks fund a large part of the Dawa [preaching] in the city: charitable organizations, women’s organizations, cultural and leisure events, youth activities, and more. Sheikh Ekrima, who is the patron of many of these groups, has de facto become the main figure identified with Turkish activity in the city.

“Turkey carries out the wealth of activities and investment in east Jerusalem through … its government aid agency, the Turkish Consulate in the city, and a variety of Turkish organizations that have branches in Israel or in Judea and Samaria,” Koren and Avrahami wrote.

Preventing the ‘Judaization’ of Jerusalem

Indeed, at least some Palestinians in Jerusalem find it difficult to hide their admiration for the Turks and their leader, Erdogan, who frequently attacks Israel, mainly on the issues of the Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa. This admiration, coupled with reservations about Jordan, came to a head in two visits by VIPs to the city.

The first was Gormez, head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate, who was given a royal welcome and even spoke before a crowd of worshippers. A few days later, head of the Jordanian Qadis, Dr. Ahmed al-Huleil, visited the Mount, and the audience interrupted his speech repeatedly. In the end, he was turned out of the mosque in disgrace.

As mentioned above, Turkey’s most loyal allies in Jerusalem are Salah, who spent last Ramadan at the home of the Turkish ambassador to Israel, and Sabri. Salah has already spent time in prison for incitement and rioting, and his Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement has been outlawed after instigating countless provocations on the Temple Mount.

Sabri, like Salah, rejects the Jews’ historic right to Israel and Jerusalem. They are both former members of a coalition of charities led by Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, which transferred money to Hamas. Only a month ago, Erdogan met with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, and according to a report from the Palestinian Maan news agency, called on him to work together to prevent the “Judaization” of Jerusalem. The Minister of Religious Affairs in the Palestinian Authority, Yusuf Idais, was also in that meeting, along with PA Minister of Jerusalem Affairs Adnan al-Husseini.

About a month ago, Erdogan met with Sabri during a conference on holy sites in Jerusalem held in Istanbul and received a medal of honor. Judging by his “achievements” in Jerusalem, he deserves it.

“The Last Emperor” is Turkey’s newest television blockbuster, consistently rating among Turkey’s top dramas since its February premiere. Every Friday night, 1 in 10 viewers tunes in to relive the last years of Abdulhamid II — an absolutist, pan-Islamist Ottoman sultan who resisted the secular-reformist Young Turk movement until it finally overthrew him in 1909. The series, airing on state television in three-hour episodes, promotes a worldview uncannily similar to that of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan: A free press, secularism and democracy are the work of foreign powers, religious minorities and godless liberals, and ultimately serve to erode national identity, honor and security.

Of all the series’ villains, none are more sinister than the Jews. Two minutes into its very first scene, Abdulhamid is riding in a procession in Istanbul when a mustachioed onlooker flips a coin into the hand of one of the royal guards. The soldier opens his hand to find the coin is etched with a Star of David surrounding a squat cross in the style favored by Crusaders and Freemasons. The signal thus received, dozens of his fellow guards turn around and open fire on the royal carriage. The screen fades to black — and to the crescent moon that accompanies the mournful opening theme.

As with much of “The Last Emperor,” most of it is fiction. Herzl’s father wasn’t poor but a wealthy businessman, and differed with his son not on the necessity of Jewish statehood but only on the methods for achieving it. Sarah, Herzl’s sidekick, doesn’t appear to be based on any real-life figure. At the First Zionist Congress, held on the show in Vienna (the actual one was in Switzerland), bearded delegates evoking the Elders of Zion applaud Herzl’s stump speech. “Soon all humankind will only live to serve us Jews, chosen by Jehovah,” Herzl intones, then paints the Zionist flag, a blue Star of David, for the assembled, braying crowd. Not satisfied, a red-dressed Sarah calls out from the audience, insisting that he flank the star with two horizontal blue stripes to mark the Jews’ supposed territorial ambitions: no less than the Nile to the Euphrates. To the delegates’ delight, Herzl complies.

That episode, which aired in March, provoked a surge in anti-Jewish invective on social media. One Twitter user vowed to turn the supposed Jewish homeland into a “Jewish graveyard.” Another, citing the same purportedly vast territorial objectives, declared, “The more I watch ‘The Last Emperor,’ the more my enmity to Jews increases — you infidels, you filthy creatures.” Both users identify in their bios as Erdogan supporters.

“The Last Emperor” may have superior production values, but its message is much the same. It is state propaganda designed to appeal to viewers’ worst instincts and leave them with a revisionist, conspiratorial narrative of Turkish history. Worst of all, while this account of Abdulhamid’s reign is almost pure fiction, the plight of Turkish citizens living under Erdogan’s increasingly sultanic rule is very much real. As I have detailed in the past, Erdogan wrote, directed, and played the leading role in a theatrical play titled Maskomya, staged throughout Turkey during the 1970s. (See picture above).  He was serving as president of the Istanbul Youth Group of Erbakan’s National Salvation Party at the time. “Mas-Kom-Ya” is a compound acronym for “Masons-Communists-Yahudi” — “Jews” — and the play focused on the evil nature of these three, whose common denominator was Judaism. When Valley of the Wolves was released in Turkey in 2006, it became the most expensive film ever made in Turkey. The film included a “cinematic motif” which featured an American Jewish doctor dismembering Iraqis allegedly murdered by American soldiers in order to harvest their organs for Jewish markets. At the time, then-Prime Minister Erdogan not only failed to condemn the film, he justified its production and popularity. Sheikh of Al-Azhar Ahmad Al-Tayyeb said that it was the Jews who had started the animosity with the Muslims, by rejecting the message of the Prophet Muhammad. 

In a May 5 interview with Egyptian TV's Channel 1, Sheikh Al-Tayyeb said that the Jews “took actual measures to thwart, kill, and bury the Islamic call in its infancy.” 

Even though 1,400 years have passed since the advent of Islam, Sheikh of Al-Azhar said, “we still suffer from Zionist-Jewish interference in the affairs of the Muslims.”

A weekend news broadcast, aired on Russia's Channel 1 on April 2, reports on the history of the Rothschild family, using Nazi propaganda footage and antisemitic caricatures. 

The item, which was broadcast following the death of American banker David Rockefeller, purported to shed light on another wealthy international banking dynasty, the Rothschilds. 

The use of Nazi propaganda footage - and moreover, without explicitly mentioning the Nazi regime - is unusual in public broadcasts on Russian media. The broadcast describes the major conspiracy theories regarding the Rothschild family, claiming that it is part of an international Jewish plot to take control of the world. The MEMRI TV clip has translated excerpts from the original news item.

'Money, which Rules the World'

Narrator: "In the days of the Internet, this old photo of a cart with four zebras usually bears the caption: What do you know about luxury? The year is 1895. Lord Walter Rothschild rides a (cart) with zebras in London's Piccadilly, violating one of the rules of his own clan, rules presumably introduced by the clan's founder Mayer Amschel: Never forget that modesty leads to riches. It is not known whether the first Rothschild actually wrote this, but there is a special gallery in the British Museum devoted to the riches of another family member, Ferdinand Rothschild - gold and precious gems. The Rothschilds made their fortune from gold, first by charging interest on gold coins of Germany's dukes, followed by major bank speculations worldwide. In fact, they have started to buy up the central banks of the European countries. There was a joke back in the 19^th century: There is a British Empire, a Prussian Empire, a Russian Empire, and the Rothschilds. As a result, the Rothschilds currently hold shares of the U.S. Federal Reserve, of the Bank of England - here you see a recent visit by Queen Elizabeth - and of dozens of major banks worldwide. This is the richest, and at the same time the most mysterious, family in the world. Another rule of the Rothschilds is: Never disclose the family's assets, not in a court, nor in a will. This rule has never been violated. The estimate of the Rothschild fortune is based on rumor alone: about 3.5 trillion dollars, which is more than the British GDP."

Christoph Hörstel: "You definitely have a colossal influence if you are the world's richest family. The Rothschilds understand politics perfectly, and they know for sure what is going to happen. Two centuries ago, Gutle Schnapper, Rothschild's wife, said: 'If my husband does not want a war, there will be no war.'"

Narrator: "This is a typical modern caricature: Rothschild nourishes the CIA, MI6, and ISIS, which is banned in many countries. Beginning with Napoleon's war against Austria, they have been lending money to rival parties - both to the emperor and the Austrian army. Of course, they charged an interest rate. The Rothschilds also had interests in Russia."

Yuri Vorobievsky: "When our tzar, Nikolai II, was visiting France, one of the Rothschilds was introduced to him. Rothschild made a proposition to the tzar: We will take control over your central bank, and in exchange, we will pay off your debts. The tzar said: 'No.' Then he took a step back and said to his circle: 'I think that I have just signed my own death sentence.'"

Louis Rothschild, arrested in Vienna, also spent some time in prison, but the family raised a ransom of 200,000 dollars, and gave up its possessions in Czech metal factories. He was set free, as opposed to hundreds of thousands of other Jews. The family prefers not to dwell on that part of their history - the tamed media depicts the Rothschilds as hard-workers and philanthropists. Indeed, the main motto of the clan is what Nathan Rothschild said in 1815, when he bought up all the British stocks and then toppled the London stock exchange, when he was the first to hear from his agents of Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. The motto is: Whoever controls information controls the world."

Anti-Semitism is on the rise in the country, a Jewish advocacy group said Tuesday, calling it a “made in Canada” phenomenon.

B’nai Brith Canada, which has been tracking anti-Semitic incidents for 35 years, said 1,728 anti-Semitic incidents were reported across the country last year — a 26 per cent increase from 2015 and the highest number the group has ever recorded.

“That means an average of four to five incidents of anti-Semitic harassment, vandalism or violence occurring every day in our country, a country where we pride ourselves as being one of the most tolerant in the world,” said the group’s CEO Michael Mostyn.

The numbers, included in the group’s 2016 report that was released Tuesday, were based on phone calls to their anti-hate hotline and police data.

Amanda Hohmann, national director of B’nai Brith Canada’s League for Human Rights, said the organization believes Canadian anti-Semitism is not a U.S. import.

“While some have sought to link the global increase in anti-Semitism to November’s presidential election in the United States, it’s worth noting that the months of September through December actually saw a relative decrease in anti-Semitic incidents in Canada, in relation to previous years,” Hohmann said.

Twenty per cent of the incidents involved Holocaust denial, a sharp increase from five per cent in 2015, she said.

“Unfortunately, Holocaust denial is no longer only coming from its traditional home in the extreme right,” Hohmann said. “More and more, Islamist extremists are also co-opting this position and spreading the rhetoric of denial, especially within Arab-language media right here in Canada.”

Mostyn listed a number of examples, including that of the al-Saraha newspaper in London, Ont., which published a report last summer that Mostyn said simultaneously denied the scope of the Holocaust and argued that any slaughter of Jews by the Nazi regime was justified.

He said the paper was initially promoted as recommended reading by a local government-funded immigrant settlement organization. It was condemned by Ontario government officials who had taken out advertisements in the paper after B’nai Brith brought it to their attention.

Barbara Perry, a University of Ontario Institute of Technology professor who studies hate crimes, said she considers a rise in anti-Semitic events in Canada as part of an increase many kinds of hatred across the Western world, which has also fuelled the rise of far-right political parties.

“It’s really a form of othering across the board, and the Jewish community is one of many targets,” she said.

In particular, anti-Semitism in Arabic-language media in Canada likely has its roots in global conflicts, Perry said.

Perry said Canada has also long had anti-Semitism of its own, traditionally focused on Jewish communities in Toronto and Montreal, which has combined with a global movement to create “a perfect storm.”

B’nai Brith Canada credits Arabic speakers with bringing these incidents to the group’s attention, but Mostyn said it was troubling that only a single Arabic speaker came forward with information in each case.
