“The Last Emperor” is Turkey’s newest television blockbuster, consistently rating among Turkey’s top dramas since its February premiere. Every Friday night, 1 in 10 viewers tunes in to relive the last years of Abdulhamid II — an absolutist, pan-Islamist Ottoman sultan who resisted the secular-reformist Young Turk movement until it finally overthrew him in 1909. The series, airing on state television in three-hour episodes, promotes a worldview uncannily similar to that of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan: A free press, secularism and democracy are the work of foreign powers, religious minorities and godless liberals, and ultimately serve to erode national identity, honor and security.

Of all the series’ villains, none are more sinister than the Jews. Two minutes into its very first scene, Abdulhamid is riding in a procession in Istanbul when a mustachioed onlooker flips a coin into the hand of one of the royal guards. The soldier opens his hand to find the coin is etched with a Star of David surrounding a squat cross in the style favored by Crusaders and Freemasons. The signal thus received, dozens of his fellow guards turn around and open fire on the royal carriage. The screen fades to black — and to the crescent moon that accompanies the mournful opening theme.

As with much of “The Last Emperor,” most of it is fiction. Herzl’s father wasn’t poor but a wealthy businessman, and differed with his son not on the necessity of Jewish statehood but only on the methods for achieving it. Sarah, Herzl’s sidekick, doesn’t appear to be based on any real-life figure. At the First Zionist Congress, held on the show in Vienna (the actual one was in Switzerland), bearded delegates evoking the Elders of Zion applaud Herzl’s stump speech. “Soon all humankind will only live to serve us Jews, chosen by Jehovah,” Herzl intones, then paints the Zionist flag, a blue Star of David, for the assembled, braying crowd. Not satisfied, a red-dressed Sarah calls out from the audience, insisting that he flank the star with two horizontal blue stripes to mark the Jews’ supposed territorial ambitions: no less than the Nile to the Euphrates. To the delegates’ delight, Herzl complies.

That episode, which aired in March, provoked a surge in anti-Jewish invective on social media. One Twitter user vowed to turn the supposed Jewish homeland into a “Jewish graveyard.” Another, citing the same purportedly vast territorial objectives, declared, “The more I watch ‘The Last Emperor,’ the more my enmity to Jews increases — you infidels, you filthy creatures.” Both users identify in their bios as Erdogan supporters.

“The Last Emperor” may have superior production values, but its message is much the same. It is state propaganda designed to appeal to viewers’ worst instincts and leave them with a revisionist, conspiratorial narrative of Turkish history. Worst of all, while this account of Abdulhamid’s reign is almost pure fiction, the plight of Turkish citizens living under Erdogan’s increasingly sultanic rule is very much real. As I have detailed in the past, Erdogan wrote, directed, and played the leading role in a theatrical play titled Maskomya, staged throughout Turkey during the 1970s. (See picture above).  He was serving as president of the Istanbul Youth Group of Erbakan’s National Salvation Party at the time. “Mas-Kom-Ya” is a compound acronym for “Masons-Communists-Yahudi” — “Jews” — and the play focused on the evil nature of these three, whose common denominator was Judaism. When Valley of the Wolves was released in Turkey in 2006, it became the most expensive film ever made in Turkey. The film included a “cinematic motif” which featured an American Jewish doctor dismembering Iraqis allegedly murdered by American soldiers in order to harvest their organs for Jewish markets. At the time, then-Prime Minister Erdogan not only failed to condemn the film, he justified its production and popularity. Israel’s National Library has uncovered a telegram written by SS commander Heinrich Himmler and sent to the Palestinian Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin al-Husseini in 1943, in which the Nazi leader expressed his support for the Palestinian struggle against the Jewsת – Joy Bernard reports for the Jerusalem Post.

Himmler, one of the main masterminds behind the Nazi regime’s plan to exterminate all of Europe’s Jews, wrote,

“The joint recognition of the enemy, and the joint battle against him, are what creates the firm allegiance between Germany and freedom-seeking Muslims all over the world….In this spirit, I am happy to wish you on the…anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, warm wishes for the continuation of your battle until the big victory.”

In an article ostensibly conducting a broad analysis of contemporary anti-Semitism, Yair Rosenberg essentially ignores its overlaps with Muslims and Islam.

Published at The Washington Post - a left-wing and Democrat-aligned news outlet that postures as objective and non-partisan - on Friday, Rosenberg's take is entitled, "Five myths about anti-Semitism."

Rosenberg describes today's dark situation for European Jewry with respect to anti-Semitism across the continent.

His analysis of contemporary anti-Semitism in the Old World, however, almost entirely ignores its relationship with rapid growth of the continent's Muslim population in recent decades via immigration and reproduction. Read the full story here.

Muslim students with Arab and Turkish origins protested participation in an International Holocaust remembrance event for the liberation of the German extermination camp Auschwitz on January, 27­ while the school management showed understanding for their criticism of Israel.

“Some Muslims students said they would not participate in the action,” said Florian Beer, a teacher at the school in the city of Gelsenkirchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, reported the paper Der Westen on Thursday.

The Holocaust Remembrance event is part of a global commemoration action to take selfie photographs with a sign saying “I Remember“ or “We Remember.“ A remembrance plaque at the school was desecrated with the sentence: “F*** Israel, free Palestine.” The school was not able to identify the perpetrator or perpetrators. 

Dr. Efraim Zuroff, the head of the Jerusalem office of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told The Jerusalem Post on Friday, “First, Muslims students are greatest in need of Holocaust education, so it would be unfortunate if they were excused from those activities.”

Zuroff, who is the Wiesenthal’s chief Nazi-hunter, added “Given that Holocaust consciousness is a central idea of civic identity in the Federal Republic, it [Holocaust remembrance] is doubly important for families that come from countries with deep antisemitic traditions and no knowledge of the Holocaust and the destruction of European Jewry.”

The Weiterbildungskolleg Emscher-Lippe school, where the protest unfolded, has 500 students, 40% of whom have a migrant background. The school director Günter Jahn told Der Westen said he finds it good that there was student opposition to the remembrance event. “It is important that there is criticism. In a January 6 Friday sermon, PA Chief Islamic Justice Sheikh Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that if the new U.S. administration carries out Trump's plan to relocate the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, it would be "a declaration of war against all Muslims."

Al-Habbash, who serves as advisor to PA President Mahmoud Abbas on religious and Islamic affairs, called it "a level of political recklessness that is unheard of and said that the entire world would be in danger if America takes this step, which would "open the gates of Hellfire upon everybody."

The sermon, delivered in Ramallah, was attended by top PA officials, including Abbas, and was posted on the YouTube account of the PA's Chief Islamic Justice office.

Al-Zarad continued: "The entire world knows no peace from the filth of these people who live on blood… and the sight of body parts… to sell weapons worldwide, and to incite civil strife in different countries." Sheikh Wael Al-Zarad: "Day in and day out, the world in general and our nation in particular is further exposed to the face of this small and ugly gang – the face of those Jews. They occupied the land of Islam and the Muslims almost 70 years ago, and it remains occupied to this day. Anti-Semitism is on the rise in Europe, with public figures trying to “brush over” past crimes against Jews, CoE human rights chief Nils Muiznieks told DW. The official also urged teaching European values to migrants.

Europeans ignore anti-Semitism “at their peril,” according to Muiznieks, who serves as Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe. The rights’ advocate urged nations to stand up to bigots and  Holocaust deniers in a Tuesday statement, warning that the “hate that begins with Jews never ends with Jews.”

Speaking to DW, the American-Latvian official points to fear and insecurity in Europe and dangerous links between words and violence.

Deutsche Welle: What prompted you to issue your appeal and urge European countries to take a stand against anti-Semitism?

Nils Muiznieks: In the last two years, I have systematically visited Jewish communities when I am on country visits. They expressed a number of concerns – one is about their security, about being targeted by terrorists, by right-wing extremists and others, but another was how this issue plays out, about trends in revisionism making a comeback in a number of places in Europe.

You are talking about politicians and public figures trying to diminish genocide, to make it appear smaller than it was?

Yes, and also to brush over some of the nasty aspect of the past, which were particularly targeting Jews as victims. In a number of places you have this competition of who can be the bigger victim and sometimes it takes on an anti-Semitic tone because people belittle the suffering of Jews.


It’s belittling, it’s relativizing, and sometimes it’s outright denial, although the outright denial you get more from the extremists than mainstream politicians.

Can you elaborate on these measures you think countries should taketo fight hate speech and anti-Semitism?

I think there is a whole package of tools – you have criminal law, which can be used to punish people, you have educational tools, teaching the Holocaust, commemorating the Holocaust, and the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the EU all have good tools in that regard.


Regarding the Internet, it's clear that you need cooperation between governments, private internet companies and civil society in order to move forward. But I think politicians bear a huge responsibility here as well.

Another thing, of course, is on integration, to make sure that new arrivals into Europe understand our history and values, and don't contribute to indigenous anti-Semitism and intolerance. But it's a two-way street, there is a lot of ingenuous intolerance that needs to be addressed as well as that among new arrivals.

This applies to immigrants, mostly of Muslim faith, arriving to Europe?


I don't want to stigmatize all people arriving into Europe, and we have plenty of our own indigenous anti-Semites. But, one concern I sense among Jewish communities is about the integration of the new arrivals. They said: Listen, it's important that we help the new arrivals find their way in society and that they learn about European history, human rights' values, because very often they come from places where this is a very foreign concept, so we have to help them. Animated videos posted on the Internet encourage children to hate Jews. The videos were produced as educational software for "Boys and Girls," the children's section of the Qatari government-owned Internet portal Islamweb.net. A large number of the portal's educational videos were posted on various YouTube accounts.

In one video, called "Palestine Is Free," animated figures of children discuss the Jews and their characteristics. "The Jews are cowards," one boy says. "I hate the Jews so much because they cursed Allah." The girl concurs that the Jews are "cowards," adding that they "killed many prophets." After the children vow to fight and vanquish the Jews, the viewers are invited in engage in an activity of identifying Jewish characteristics.

In another video, titled "Our Duty towards Gaza," the children are told that the Jews are "criminals," who mercilessly kill Muslims in Gaza. The animated characters recommend praying for Allah to wreak vengeance upon the Jews. At the end of the video, the children are asked to engage in an activity of identifying ways to support Gaza. Both videos were posted on the Internet on December 17, 2015.

The Palestinian Authority teaches that Jews are "evil" and the source of all bad in the world. An official PA TV host and preacher of Islam explained in his weekly education program about Islam, that as long as Jews are spreading their corruption "humanity will never live in comfort." He illustrated this with an example: "An old man told me: If a fish in the sea fights with another fish, I am sure the Jews are behind it".

Germany - The German Die Welt newspaper published “an experiment” where an Israeli Orthodox Jew did just that.

The man, who has experienced several antisemitic attacks within the last six months in Germany, encountered varying reactions within the center. While some expressed a wish for peace in Europe and empathy with Jews as another minority group, others were more hateful. One woman turned away in disgust on hearing he was Israeli. A boy said that all Jews should leave the Middle-East. The Jewish man also told the Jerusalem Post that he heard a group of men whispering “Jew” on seeing him but, when he confronted them, they assured him that he was mistaken.
There were also several instances of prominent, antisemitic graffiti found on the walls of the center: a swastika, a Star of David with the number 666 written below it, and an image of Israel entirely covered in the Palestinian Authority flag. Lina Allan, a Palestinian-Jordanian activist who lives in Michigan, published a video in which she attempted to rebut the position of people who prohibit the stabbing of Jews by Palestinians. Allan called on these people to not talk about something they don't understand and to "go back to watching Turkish soap operas" instead. She added that objecting to the stabbing of Jews is like defending animal rights "at best." In 2011, Allan co-founded the Jordanian "Step & Mile" NGO, and in 2012, she represented the State Department's U.S.-Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) in the Jameed Festival in Jordan, according to an interview she gave to the Jordanian Roya TV.

Antisemitic hate crimes in London have rocketed by 61 percent in the last year

Jewish hate crimes in London have rocketed by 61 percent in the last year, Metropolitan Police figures show. John Mann MP has called on the government to introduce new legislation to clamp down on hate speech.

The findings published on Wednesday show a total of 483 anti-Semitic crimes were committed between November 2014 and November 2015. This marks a significant rise on the 299 hate crimes recorded during the same period the previous year.

The south London borough of Lambeth saw a 200 percent rise in Jewish hate crimes, while Westminster saw a 178 percent increase.

Commenting on the findings, Mann said the increase may be due to messages distributed online.

“The big change … has been the growth of anti-Semitic hate crimes which I have witnessed first-hand. Over 200 anti-Semitic attacks have been made on me in the last six months over the internet in this country alone. This is mild compared to prominent Jewish politicians,” he told the Independent.

“Many of these threats are extreme right-wing abuse, calculated to offend, others are abuse from the far left – usually recycling the old tropes about money, power and conspiracy.

“There needs to be a new law on hate speech on the internet, requiring the internet companies to immediately identify the perpetrators and a regulatory system to oversee their managing of threatening content.”

The Metropolitan Police said it does not have full statistics on the proportion of crimes carried out online.

“The number of anti-Semitic offences recorded between December 2013 and November 2014 was 299. There were 184 more anti-Semitic offences in the subsequent 12-month period to November 2015,” a spokesperson for the force said.

In July, the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that monitors anti-Semitism in the UK, discovered a significant leap in the number of recorded incidents in the wake of January’s terror attack on a Jewish deli in Paris.

The CST numbers of Antisemitic hate crimes seem way higher than what the Police is saying:

CST recorded 473 antisemitic incidents across the UK in the first six months of 2015, a 53 per cent increase on the first six months of 2014.

In addition to the 473 antisemitic incidents recorded by CST, a further 333 potential incidents were reported to CST which, after investigation, did not show evidence of antisemitic targeting, content or motivation and are not included in the statistics in this report.

 Home Secretary Theresa May said she welcomed the growing awareness of anti-Semitic abuse. “It is encouraging that more people are coming forward as the under-reporting of hate crime is a real issue,” May said in a statement. “I know that many Jewish people in this country are concerned about safety in their community, and we are listening. Those who seek to spread anti-Semitic hatred should know that the government will act against all those who seek to divide our country and sow discord.” Hmmmm..........Amazing not a single mention of Islamic antisemitism.

The most senior cleric in Saudi Arabia has called for greater Islamic cooperation against the Islamic State, while also labeling ISIS a "part of the Israeli army." The revealing interview this week with Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh provides important insight into the Wahhabi establishment, which is the core partner of the House of Saud.

The Mufti praised the creation of an Islamic military alliance to fight terrorism, promising the alliance will defeat the Islamic State, which he labeled a heretical and un-Islamic movement. The new alliance is the brainchild of Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister Prince Muhammed bin Salman, the king’s favorite son.

Referring to a recent threat by ISIS leader against Israel, the grand mufti said: “This threat against Israel is simply a lie. Actually, Daesh is part of the Israeli soldiers,” he said using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Both the Mufti's remarks and al-Baghdadi's illustrate that Israel remains the hot button issue in the Kingdom. If you want to smear your enemy, label him a stooge of Israel. Hmmm......When everything else fails.....blame the Jews. Read the full story here.
