Merkel arrives 'Again' without headscarf in Saudi Arabia for talks with King Salman
Merkel arrives without headscarf in Saudi Arabia for talks with King Salman. (independent).
It’s undoubtedly true that Saudi Arabia greatly impinges on basic rights for women. Saudi women are expected to wear long sleeved, full-length abayas and cover their hair with a headscarf. The country’s male guardianship laws keep them from moving about freely without a male relative, and women are further barred from driving
Foreign women, however, are not legally required to wear the abaya or headscarf
Still, the U.S. State Department advises American women against going with them. “Women who choose not to conform to this dress code face a risk of confrontation by Mutawwa [Saudi Arabia’s religious police] and possible detention/arrest,” it cautions.
Hmm......I'm always amazed to what length politicians will go to win extra voters. Compared to them Lawyers are angels.

'Islamist Dictatorship' Turkey Systematically Jails Women In Persecution Of Critics.
'Islamist Dictatorship' Turkey Systematically Jails Women In Persecution Of Critics. HT: stockholmcf.org.
As part of escalating crackdown on dissent and criticism which landed almost 50,000 people in jail in the last six months alone, Turkish government has aggressively started to persecute women who already bear the brunt of the unprecedented witch-hunt campaign by the country’s Islamist rulers.
A woman got detained right after the delivery of her baby in hospital while another woman was jailed as she was visiting imprisoned husband, leaving her kids stranded in a parking lot in a car under the care of elder brother. A woman who lost sanity under torture in police detention was thrown back to prison despite diagnosis while a woman was jailed because her husband, a journalist, remained at large. The government jailed wives of businessman who are seen supporting the opposition to Turkey’s autocratic President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as the government seized all their business and personal assets.
Everyday dozens of women get arrested in Turkey on false charges of terror and coup plotting in a systematic persecution campaign launched by the country’s autocratic President Erdoğan who declared a “merciless’ crack down on his critics and opponents. Among those who face harsh treatment in detentions and prisons include mostly women of Gülen movement and Kurdish political movement. Alevis and leftist groups also get their fair share of oppression under the current repressive regime.
The persecution of women who are perceived to be critics of the government has picked up a pace after the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016 that appears to be staged to set up Erdoğan’s critics for a mass persecution. By targeting especially women, Erdoğan and his partners in the government hopes to break the will of government critics while undermining crucial role of women in supporting the community members, taking care of children who are separated from their jailed fathers.
Erdoğan knows the value of women grassroots networks because he ascended to the power in Turkey partly because of mobilization of conservative and religious women base in Turkey. By exerting pressure on networks sustained in great deal by women in various opposition groups in Turkey, Islamist rulers hope to insure their survival. Since women play essential role both as wives and mothers in keeping the family and on a greater scale the community together, Erdoğan has started directly attacking women in Turkey.

MOTHERS WHO CARE KIDS WITH DOWN SYNDROME DETAINED
Separated from both her father and mother, Baby Sena’s conditions deteriorated rapidly. She was rushed to the emergency on Jan.23, 2017 and placed in intensive care unit (ICU) at Bağcılar Medilife Hospital. She suffered from serious health troubles including heart, lung and kidney failures. Doctors were able to stabilize her but she had spent 20 days in ICU. Now she is out of the ICU, but her treatment is still underway at the hospital without her parent’s presence.
In another case, a mother of five that included a boy with a Down Syndrome was detained while she was visiting her husband who was jailed on charges of alleged links to the Gülen movement. When she got detained on the spot during the prison visit, five kids including the boy with a Down Syndrome were left stranded in a car in the parking lot of Sincan Prison in Ankara.
The video showing five children left alone in tears in front of the prison after their mother was detained went viral in social media, prompting outcry. “Leaving children alone in such a situation is against the Convention on the Rights of the Child and all related laws. We will follow this issue,” said Mahmut Tanal, a deputy from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and a member of the Human Rights Commission in the Turkish Parliament.
In the video a child opens the door of a car in the prison parking lot, showing his brothers crying, and says in tears, “We are five brothers, left alone. We have a handicapped brother. I commend those people to God’s punishment.” The boy with a Down Syndrome, sitting in the backseat of the car, appears to be scared. He looks to be at the age of five or six.
The mother, identified with her first name Nagehan, was later transferred to another prison in Tokat, which is hundreds of miles away from her children in Ankara. A fund-raising campaign was launched in the US to help the family and she was later released on TL 50,000 ($14,000) bail.
In both cases, parents were accused of false charges of terror because of their alleged links to the Gülen movement which is inspired by the US-based Turkish Muslim intellectual Fethullah Gülen who has been advocating science education, interfaith and intercultural dialogue and community contribution.
Gülen has been a vocal critic of Turkish government and autocratic President Erdoğan on massive corruption in the government as well as Turkey’s aiding and abetting of radical groups in Syria.
Erdoğan launched an unprecedented persecution against Gülen and his followers in December 2013 right after major corruption probe that incriminated Erdoğan’s family members.
Turkish President vowed to show no mercy towards followers of Gülen and orchestrated the arrest of over 46,000 people in the last six months.
The ruling Islamist leaders labelled the movement as ‘FETÖ’, a terrorist organization, although Gülen, 75-year old cleric, and his followers have never advocated violence but rather remained staunchly opposed to any violence, radicalism and terror in the name of religion. Read the full story here.

Saudi Marital Consultant Dr. Zahra Al-Muabi: One Wife Is Not Enough; Man Are Capable of Dispensing Love to Four Wives.
When asked why a man who loves his wife should turn to polygamy, Dr. Zahra Al-Muabbi, a Saudi family and marital consultant, responded: "One wife is not enough." She said that while the man was created with capabilities "which he can dispense among four wives," a woman "cannot even imagine... talking to another man." In June 2013, Al-Muabi caused an uproar when she said, on Al-Arabiya TV, that if a man beats his wife, she should beat him back.

Two Saudi Women Sentenced to 20 Lashes each for Using ‘Obscene Words’ on WhatsApp.
Two Saudi Women Sentenced to 20 Lashes each for Using ‘Obscene Words’ on WhatsApp. (IFP).
Saudi Al-Watan newspaper reported that
one of the young women came to the Criminal Court in Jeddah and accused
the other of using abusive expressions during their WhatsApp
conversation. She then showed her phone at the Court’s request to prove
her words.
During the next session, the court
confirmed that the woman had indeed sent obscene messages to the other,
but the defendant said she was not the first to start the hassle and
showed a message which she received from her counterpart two months ago.
The court then referred the case to a higher instance and one month
later, the judge decided that the two girls were equally guilty and
punished both of them. The women will spend 10 days in prison and
receive 20 lashes each. Both of them could face a much more severe
punishment if the incident is repeated, a source close to the
investigation told the newspaper.
According to a report covered by YJC,
Saudi Arabia has been repeatedly criticized by human rights groups for
violating human rights, including public be-headings and floggings,
discrimination against women and restrictions on freedom of expression. Hmmm.....Good luck To the UN Human rights council, if they have to lash each woman that uses obscene words.

Saudi Arabia: "Women more resistant to beheading" that's why we shoot them now. (E24/7).
Convicted women sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia have been more resistant to beheading than men, prompting authorities to change the execution method to shooting, a well-known Saudi executioner has said.
Abu Bandar Al Bishi, a massive man who has beheaded scores of convicted criminals in public places in the Gulf Kingdom, said most of those brought to the execution area appear to be in “trance” ahead of their death.
Quoted by the Saudi daily Sabq, he denied social media reports that those sentenced to death are drugged just before their execution.
“Those brought for execution are not drugged..there is no medical intervention in their execution…they just appear to be in trance or half dead,” Bishi said.
“As for women, they are more resistant to execution than men…we used to behead them but the verdict has been changed to executing them by shooting. He said many convicts make requests just before their execution, adding that one asked for a cigarette. “Of course we did not give him a cigarette…if he had asked to pray before his death, then it would have been much better.”
Bishi said he uses a gun to execute women by shooting them in the head, adding that he does not stick to doctor’s instructions to shoot them in the heart.
“The doctor draws a mark towards the heart on the convict’s back…but I shoot them in the head because the bullet may miss the heart target if the convict moves.

In a stunning speech broadcast live on television, Mr Erdogan also said women cannot be treated as equal to men.
The devout Muslim said women should have at least three children.
He said: "We will multiply our descendants. They talk about population planning, birth control. No Muslim family can have such an approach."Nobody can interfere in God's work. The first duty here belongs to mothers.”
The 62-year-old, himself a father-of-four, has previously spoken out against contraception, describing it as “treason” which risked causing the while generation to “dry up”.
The Platform to Stop Violence Against Women condemned Mr Erdogan’s comments as violating the rights of women.
A statement on Twitter said: "You (Erdogan) cannot usurp our right to contraception, nor our other rights with your declarations that come out of the Middle Ages."We will protect our rights.” Hmmm.....Reminds me of the movie 'braveheart' English king Longshanks says 'If we can't kill them, we'll breed them out'. “There is no doubt that financial support is involved as well. We are taking this very seriously,” he added.

Women will be ‘exposed to evil’ if allowed to drive, says Saudi grand mufti. (ET).
Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh has defended a ban on female drivers, saying it is “a dangerous matter that exposes women to evil”.
Men with “weak spirits” and who are “obsessed with women” could cause female drivers harm, the Grand Mufti a told religious television channel, Almajd, according to the The Telegraph.
The top cleric added that it would also make it difficult for family members to know about their whereabouts.
Apart from women’s rights, the Grand Mufti has also spoken on a range of other matters. In March, he forbid Muslims in Saudi Arabia from playing chess, claiming it shows “enmity and hatred”.
Last year, women’s rights campaigner Loujain al-Hathloul received a 10-week jail sentence after she drove from the United Arab Emirates to the Saudi border in protest of the ban.

British-Pakistani man in Great Britain jailed for keeping wife as slave.
British-Pakistani man jailed for keeping wife as slave. (ET).
A man was handed a two year jail sentence Friday after becoming the first in England to be convicted of keeping his wife “in domestic servitude“.
In what the Crown Prosecution Service said was the first case of its kind in England, London’s Woolwich Crown Court heard that Safraz Ahmed, 34, imprisoned and beat his wife after an arranged marriage in Pakistan.
The mechanic from Charlton in southeast London forced his wife, Sumara Iram, to cook, clean and look after his mother from 5am to midnight every day after she moved to Britain in 2012.
He also slapped her in the face when she asked him to consummate their marriage, throwing tins of cat food at her head and covering her face with a cushion in other attacks.
Iram, 28, who had a master’s degree in Islamic Studies, was forbidden from leaving the house alone and took an overdose before eventually calling the emergency services in 2014, the court heard.
Sentencing Ahmed to two years in prison for holding a person in domestic servitude, Judge Christopher Hehir told him: “She was bullied and controlled by you, given little money and expected to cook, clean and look after your family as if she was a skivvy.
“She described your behaviour as physical and mental torture and in my judgement, she was right.”
Damaris Lakin, a Crown Prosecution Service lawyer who worked on the trial, said it was a “ground-breaking case which demonstrates how far we have come in tackling modern-day slavery”.
The couple are now divorced. Hmmm......Two years? That's it? Injustice has been done towards the victim.

"Sex Slave" workers in Saudi Arabia: 'We want to go home, enough ill-treatment'.
"Sex Slave" workers in Saudi Arabia: 'We want to go home, enough ill-treatment'. (AsiaNews).
Thousands of Bangladeshi migrant women who travelled to the Saudi kingdom in search of work now want to return to the country of origin because of continuing harassment they suffer.
Many of them have already returned and denounced the slave-like working conditions to which they were subjected by day as maids in the house, and that at night they were forced to satisfy the sexual desires of male employers and employees.Bangladesh suspended the sending of women workers to Saudi Arabia for seven years, allowing only men to migrate. But last year the Dhaka authorities have signed an agreement that also provides for the migration of women. They are educated in the country of origin, where the government has opened 26 centers for the professional training of maids and servants. Then they leave for the Middle Eastern countries, where, however, many suffer threats and sexual abuse.
The agreement between the two governments is to send 120 thousand Bangladeshi women in the coming years. In 2015 there were 20,952 migrant workers, but many of them have already returned. Monira Akter (not her real name) is one of them and she told AsiaNews: "I followed the training course organized by the government to learn how to carry out domestic chores, but I could not do my job properly because my employer wanted to force me to have sex. " "I did not go there to sell my body – she complains - I emigrated to raise money for my family."
The woman says she knows five other workers who have suffered the same fate. Another victim of this exploitation reveals: "My master treated me badly, he did not allow me to call in Bangladesh and so I came back."
Abdul Aziz, a Saudi who recruits women in Bangladesh, admits: "We love the Bangladeshi workers because they are Muslim and wear the burka [the full veil that leaves only the eyes uncovered, ed]."
Rosaline Costa, Catholic activist, said: "It is not difficult to understand why women do not want to go to Saudi Arabia, when you consider the way they are exploited by employers: by day slaves in the house, sex slaves at night" .The activist believes that the recently approved provision, to allow a male relative to accompany workers as a "guardian" is insufficient. “They have no way - he says – to help their relatives. People are helpless and without legal protection, since their passport and airline ticket are withdrawn and they do not know where to seek help if they have problems at night".
She concludes: "Given the recent news of exploitation, the relatives of the workers no longer want to allow their departure, if it means that almost all of them will be forced to be sex slaves for the employer and for his male employees."

413 women killed across Turkey since start of 2015.
413 women killed across Turkey since start of 2015. (HD).
“One in three women is subjected to violence” the statement underlined.
Some 413 murders of women were reported by the Turkish media in 2015, the Umut (Hope) Foundation has stated in a new report, underlining that the trend has been increasing since the beginning of 2016.
The foundation called on Feb. 16 for NGOs to conduct comprehensive studies on the issue, which it described as a “mass murder of women.”
It said the death toll ranged from women older than 85 to a six-week-old fetus.
Of the 413 killings, 309 were a result of armed attacks, and 40 women have been killed since the beginning of January 2016 alone.
Most young women were killed because they requested a divorce or separation from their partners, the foundation noted, adding that many cases involved victims of “shady suicides,” mostly in southeastern provinces.
In addition, data shows that 55 husbands committed suicide after killing their wives from the beginning of January 2015. Hmmm......Just keep Turkey and their 'values' out of Europe. Read the full story here.

EU is poised to restrict free travel within Schengen Area
EU is poised to restrict free travel within Schengen Area. (DS).
BRUSSELS: European Union countries are poised to restrict passport-free travel by invoking an emergency rule to impose controls at several borders for two more years because of the migration crisis, according to EU documents seen by The Associated Press.
The switch will reverse a decades-old trend of expanding passport-free travel in Europe.
The documents show that EU policy makers are preparing to make unprecedented use of an emergency provision by declaring that Greece is failing to sufficiently protect it border. Some 2,000 people are still arriving daily on Greek islands in smugglers' boats from Turkey, most of them keen to move deeper into Europe to wealthier countries like Germany and Sweden.
In Brussels on Friday, EU nations acknowledged that the overall functioning of Schengen "is at serious risk" and said Greece must make further efforts to deal with the migrant crisis at its source.
With a sense of compromise, Friday's EU statement acknowledged the vast challenge facing Greece, saying "the very large number of arrivals is such that the external border controls of any member state would be placed under severe pressure."
So far, six Schengen members have imposed border checks, and many of those would have to dismantle them starting in mid-May under Schengen rules. Germany has until May 13, and has made clear that it does not want to relinquish the checks. The other countries are France, Austria, Denmark, and Norway. Read the full story here.
