TWELVE! Twelve year old girl forced to withdraw from chess tournament because her dress was too 'seductive'.
TWELVE! Twelve year old girl forced to withdraw from chess tournament because her dress was too 'seductive'.(ET).
A 12-year-old girl in Malaysia was forced to withdraw from a chess tournament because officials thought her dress was too ‘seductive’.
“In the middle of Round 2, without stopping the clocks, the chief arbiter informed my student that the dress she wore was improper,” Kaushal wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday night.
The event’s chief arbiter told the girl and her mother that the dress was a “temptation from a certain angle far, far away.”
The director informed them that they needed to go to the mall to buy a pair of trousers for the next round. The shops in the area were closed and would not be open in time for the next round which resumed at 9 am.
The 12-year-old’s mother tried calling the tournament director who told her that he would call her back after discussing the incident with the arbiter. This did not happen, however.
“He wouldn’t answer or return any calls from my student’s mother. This situation led to the inevitable decision to withdraw her from the tournament altogether,” said Kaushal.
“This incident has resulted in loss of time and money which was invested before, during and after the tournament on coaching, registration fees, travelling, accommodation and other incurred costs,” he added.
Kaushal described the girl as a “bright young girl” who shows “tremendous potential in chess”.
“My daughter was shocked after her game was interrupted by the chief arbiter,” Chin Wai Lings, the girl’s mother. told The Star Online. “From that point onwards, all she [her daughter] could think of was whether anyone was peeping [at her] throughout the game,” she added.
Many people also took to Twitter to express outrage over how a 12-year-old’s dress could be considered ‘seductive’. Read the full story here.
The girl’s coach Kaushal Khandhar detailed on Facebook the “disturbing incident”, stating that his student felt “harassed and humiliated by the actions of the Tournament Director and Chief Arbiter”.
DEAR MALAYSIAN CHESS COMMUNITY,
I heard the most disturbing incident from one of my student’s mother.
At the National Scholastic Chess Championship 2017, in Putrajaya, one of my student, who is a 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL felt harassed and humiliated by the actions of Tournament Director and Chief Arbiter.
In the middle of Round 2, (without stopping the clocks) Chief Arbiter
informs my student that the dress she wore was improper and have
violated the dress code of the tournament.
It was later informed (by Chief Arbiter) to my student and her mother, that the Tournament Director deemed my student’s dress to be “seductive” and a “temptation from a certain angle far, far away”.
We found this statement completely out of line!
Please see attached photo of what she was wearing! (Picture above)Completely ridiculous!
After some discussion, Chief Arbiter had conceded and apologised to my student, personally assuring her that there was nothing wrong with her attire, but due to Tournament Director’s decision, he could not allow this dress to be worn by my student in the tournament. This discussion happened at around 10pm and Chief Arbiter gave them a choice to go to the mall nearby to buy a long slack for the next day 9.00am round.
Due to the timing of this incident, it was impossible to get another attire in time for the 9.00am round next day, as all shops were already closed and wouldn’t be open in time.
Before the morning round next day, my student’s mother called Tournament Director regarding this matter, initially he had replied that he was not aware of the situation but after a brief discussion, it was realized that he knew all the details on this incident prior to this phone call. He promised to return the call upon discussion with Chief Arbiter, but this did not happen. He would further not answer or return any calls of my student’s mother.
This situation had led to the inevitable decision of withdrawal from the tournament all together.
We are absolutely DIGUSTED by the treatment of Tournament Director to a 12-year-old girl and her mother. This incident has resulted in loss of time and money which was invested before, during and after the tournament on coaching, registration fees, travelling, accommodation and other incurred cost.
This bright young girl was recently the champion of her district in MSS Kuala Lumpur and has shown tremendous potential in Chess. This incident has left her extremely disturbed, and embarrassed.
I have been playing chess in Malaysia for almost 2 decades and I have never heard this type of issue ever in any tournaments in Malaysia. This should be the first and last time this kind of issue ever appears, I or anyone of us should never accept this in our Chess Community.
We demand a public apology from Tournament Director of National Scholastic Chess Championship 2017. In the event, we do not receive a public apology in the next 5 days, we shall have no choice but to resort to legal proceedings.
Regards,
Kaushal Khandhar

Eight young Women Arrested In Iran For Dressing As Men In Order To Attend Soccer Game
Women Arrested In Iran For Dressing As Men In Order To Attend Soccer Game. (Memri).
Iran's
Islamic law bans women from attending public soccer matches attended by
men, and women who have attempted to do so have been arrested in the
past. Additionally, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei recently issued a fatwa
banning women from riding bicycles in public, arguing that doing so
attracts the male gaze and is therefore forbidden.
This report will discuss ways in which women are being pushed out of public spaces in Iran:
On February 12, 2017, Iranian authorities
arrested eight young women who had disguised themselves as men in order
to watch a soccer match between Esteghlal F.C. and Persepolis F.C. at
Tehran's Azadi Stadium. According to reports, the women face legal
action.
Alireza Adeli, head of security for the
Tehran municipality, stated that this was not the first time that women
have disguised themselves as men in order to enter the stadium, and
stressed that the ban was aimed at "preserving their honor, because the
stadium's atmosphere, commotion, and crowds are no place for them.
Dear
women who wish to watch the match can do so on TV, which broadcasts the
games and gives everyone a way to watch them live."[1]
Social media users posted sarcastic and angry remarks about the arrest:

"Thanks to the vigilance of [security] forces, eight girls who intended to enter Azadi Stadium were arrested, and peace returned to the hearts of ideologues. Death to the anti-woman Trump" (Twitter.com/AhmadAfrazande, February 16, 2017)

"Instead of [calling the stadium] Azadi [freedom] – [call it] Incarceration Stadium – a stadium that symbolizes the humiliation and wretcheness of a chained nation" (Twitter.com/shahabtx, February 14, 2017)

"Sad that the girls were barred from entering the stadium. This is ridiculous" (Twitter.com/fadaei9, February 16, 2017)

Tweet by journalist Enayat Hoseinian: "All our problems in this match [involve] the lack of female presence in Azadi Stadium; they arrested eight girls who managed to get in. So what? Good for them?" (Twitter.com/enayathoseinian, February 14, 2017)

Sweden - Islamic 'morality police' in Stockholm forcing girls to the back of school bus.
Sweden - Islamic 'morality police' in Stockholm forcing girls to the back of school bus.(Niewstpo).[Google translated].
Women attacked during Ramadan for too "short skirts" and drinking wine.
In the northern parts of Stockholm iis not to well with the freedom of girls and women. They are being harassed on the streets by boys and men physically attacked for wearing 'too short' skirts, walk their dog or simply because they are single. Further down the ladies must be seated separate in some cafes and girls should sit back school buses as the front space is reserved for boys.
The report on these conditions will be broadcast tonight on the program "Cold Facts" from TV4, writes Aftonbladet. According to TV4, which worked with hidden cameras, there is a self-appointed morality police. Which ensures that in the north of the Swedish capital "schoolgirls remain encapsulated in a culture consisting of honor, insults and gossip," the transmitter.
In the images shown include how students of the Islamic Al Azhar school in the morning and afternoon are separated on the bus. The rector of the educational institution will not respond to the secret recordings. Devin Rexvid, a researcher who works for the University of Umea, compares the situation to racial segregation in the US in the 50s.
One of the women interviewed recounts how she was once approached by neighbors because she drank wine on her balcony. "At one point, a group of young men met outside my house. They shouted threats and climbed up the drainpipe towards my balcony. "
Another woman, who is a former refugee, TV4 tells how she was harassed during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, when she wore a short skirt. "People threatened me and threw stones at me. One shattered the window of my kitchen. I fled to Sweden from a country where women were oppressed, "according to the the victim," but now I'm here in an area which is very similar to my homeland. "

Egyptian Theater Student Explains Refusal to Undergo FGM Despite Pressure: Your Body Is Your Own.(Memri).
Iman
Hussein, an Egyptian theater student, was interviewed by the Egyptian
DMC TV channel on the issue of female circumcision. She recounted that
at the age of 10 or 11, she had discussed it with her mother and told
her that this was her "own private matter," resisting pressure mounted
by relatives and acquaintances. Hussein sent a message to young girls:
"Your body is yours... In order to avoid the pain of sexual harassment,
FGM, or things like that, you must confront it with all your might." The
interview aired on February 12.
Iman Hussein:
I was raised in a place called Bashayer, where my mother used to work.
We were educated against FGM, and I knew my rights on this matter.
Later, when I went to school, my friends were undergoing this operation.
I told my mother that my friends at school were undergoing female
circumcision, and I started discussing this with her. I told her that
this was wrong because this is a part of the body. My mother always said
to me: "This is your body, and nobody can touch it."
First Interviewer: How old were you?
Iman Hussein: I was 10 or 11 years old.
First Interviewer: At such a young age...
Iman Hussein:
Then my mother's friends at work started to ask her: "Why haven't you
done the operation to your daughters yet?" Some of our family members,
like my grandmother, also raised the issue. I said to my mother then:
"This is up to me. You can't do this." I'm into theater, and I watched
some shows about FGM...
First Interviewer: And you must have heard stories from your friends at school.
Iman Hussein:
Yes, one of them told me that she could not move for 3 or 4 days, and
was hemorrhaging. Stuff like that. I was very scared, and I tried to
imagine myself in such a situation. Besides, I am small, not like my
friends, who are...
Second Interviewer: You are petite.
Iman Hussein:
Yes... My mother's friends and our relatives told me that after the
operation, my body would develop and I would put on some weight. But I
didn't want that. I wanted to stay the way I am. This is my own private
matter. So I told my mother that I was not doing this. She was also
against it, but every now and again, she would say: Maybe we should
consult a doctor? But I said: No way. What doctor are you talking
about?! Why should I let a doctor see me? This is my own private matter.
Second Interviewer: Iman, we'd like to hear your message to girls your age or younger, who might find themselves in this situation one day.
Iman Hussein:
Your body is yours. You are the one who will have to deal with the pain
and everything. In order to avoid the pain of sexual harassment, FGM,
or things like that, you must confront it with all your might. Our body
deserves to be protected from these things.
Second Interviewer: I salute your courage and your position against all the pressure.

Iran bans female chess player for not wearing hijab, and her brother for playing with Israeli counterpart.
Iran bans female chess player for not wearing hijab, and her brother for playing with Israeli counterpart. (IFP).
The Islamic Republic of Iran has banned chess players brother and sister from any upcoming tournament due to the former's playing with an Israeli representative and the latter's not wearing hijab.
Dorsa Derakhshani, an 18-year-old member of the Iranian Women's National Chess Team and the sixth world champion in under-18 games, was expelled from the national team for not covering her hair in the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, which was held in late January and early February 2017, Iranian media quoted Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, head of Iran's Chess Federation, as saying.
Her 15-year-old brother, Borna Darakhshani was also expelled from the national team because of playing with an Israeli counterpart.
"The first step in dealing with them would be to deprive them from playing in Iran, and they won't have a chance to be in the national team,” Pahlevanzadeh said.
He also said the issue is a matter of “national interest” and the Chess Federation will deal with the siblings in the “severest way possible.”
Dorsa is presently studying in Spain and had participated in the Gibraltar games independently. Her brother, who had also registered in the games on his own, played with Alexander Huzman, a grandmaster from Israel.
The Islamic Republic does not officially recognize Israel and bans members of its national teams to compete with Israeli citizens in international tournaments.

Turkey - Row over 'Medieval' marriage guidance book distributed by municipality for Turkish newly-weds
Turkey - Row over 'Medieval' marriage guidance book distributed by municipality for Turkish newly-weds . (TF)
In the town of Kütahya, west of Turkey, the bride and groom used to receive a controversial gift from the municipality: a marriage guide that provides advice from another age.
Spotted by the BBC last December, this book of 394 pages, entitled Marriage and Family Life boasts among young husband virtues of polygamy, justifies the subjugation of women to the will of their husbands and domestic violence .
Kutahya council in western Turkey issues the hefty 394-page "Marriage and Family Life" free of charge, but has run into a barrage of complaints. The leader of the main opposition CHP Republican People's Party in Kutahya, Zeliha Aksaz Sahbaz, told Turkey's NTV television channel that the book "depicts woman as second-class citizens and defines them as sexual slaves".
She and other critics point to such advice as a "wife must stay quiet and apologise if her husband is angry with her", and suggests polygamy as a way of "promoting competition" among women and sparing them the attentions of other men.
Local CHP member of parliament Fatma Kaplan Hurriyet raised the issue in a National Assembly family and social policy debate, telling MPs that the book appears to be a "cut-and-paste copy" of another book called "Marriage and Privacy" issued by Pamukkale city council, which she found in the parliamentary library.
She asked whether the mayors of these cities would face prosecution for distributing material that contravenes Turkish law, not least in advocating the beating of wives who "do not dress up at the request of her husband", NTV reports.
Written by a certain Hasan Çaliskan, a former employee of the Office of Religious Affairs, the guide seems to have been inspired by medieval times. It dispenses including the "right to sexual obedience" of the woman to her husband during the wedding night and advises marriage as young as ten years .
"A woman who does not make herself beautiful to her husband and does not respect her authority can be beaten, it will remind her of the rules in force in the home," she said. "If a woman sees a man more beautiful than her husband, she could fall in love with him, so she must stay at home," says the author of the manual, who argues that professional life "turns women away from duty Sexual relationship with her husband ".
Other advice to follow according to the guide: to avoid going to the theater which is the "den of the demons" but also to remain silent during the sexual relations under penalty of seeing its future child stammer.
"We never had a complaint"
Edited by the city of Kütahya, Marriage and Family Life is also distributed free of charge by the City Council of Pamukkale, a town in the southwest of Turkey. To the dismay of the local opposition, which denounced the retrograde and violent content of the work.
In the parliament, Fatma Kaplan Hurriyet, an elected member of the secular party, took an open position against the book, which "represents women as second-class citizens and defines them as sexual slaves."
She also called for the two mayors who distribute Marriage and Family Life to be prosecuted. The two elected members are members of the conservative AKP, which includes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Faced with the extent of the polemic, the Turkish Minister of Education described the work as "primitive and non-scientific". This does not prevent the Mayor of Kütahya from camping on his positions. "We have given it to the newlyweds since 2014 and we have never had any complaints," he said.
Women's rights more and more threatened
Since the arrival of Recep Tayyip Erdogan as President of Turkey, associations are constantly alarmed by the regression of women's rights in the country. Accused of encouraging domestic violence by its decision openly conservative position on women , Turkish President has repeatedly been singled out for its misogynistic outputs . Thus, in November 2014, he did not hesitate to rely on the reading of the Koran to justify the superiority of men over women. "I know there will be some who will be embarrassed, but for me the woman is above all a mother," he added.
Regularly attacking the feminist movements he represses, he also said on March 8 that "the two sexes could not be treated in the same way because it is against human nature." In August 2014, he also tried to limit the right to abortion.
In November 2016, the Erdogan government had attempted to pass a law to decriminalize sexual assault of a minor if the defendant marries the victim. Faced with the outcry in Turkey and his condemnation by the international community, he had finally suspended the bill.

Two Saudi Women Sentenced to 20 Lashes each for Using ‘Obscene Words’ on WhatsApp.
Two Saudi Women Sentenced to 20 Lashes each for Using ‘Obscene Words’ on WhatsApp. (IFP).
Saudi Al-Watan newspaper reported that
one of the young women came to the Criminal Court in Jeddah and accused
the other of using abusive expressions during their WhatsApp
conversation. She then showed her phone at the Court’s request to prove
her words.
During the next session, the court
confirmed that the woman had indeed sent obscene messages to the other,
but the defendant said she was not the first to start the hassle and
showed a message which she received from her counterpart two months ago.
The court then referred the case to a higher instance and one month
later, the judge decided that the two girls were equally guilty and
punished both of them. The women will spend 10 days in prison and
receive 20 lashes each. Both of them could face a much more severe
punishment if the incident is repeated, a source close to the
investigation told the newspaper.
According to a report covered by YJC,
Saudi Arabia has been repeatedly criticized by human rights groups for
violating human rights, including public be-headings and floggings,
discrimination against women and restrictions on freedom of expression. Hmmm.....Good luck To the UN Human rights council, if they have to lash each woman that uses obscene words.

Saudi Academic: It's Time To End Gender Segregation In Mosques!
Saudi Academic: It's Time To End Gender Segregation In Mosques! (Memri).
In a June 25, 2016 interview with the liberal Arab website Elaph, Dr. Najat Al-Sa'eed, a Saudi communications lecturer at Zayed University in Dubai, said that Islam is the only monotheistic religion that has not adapted to the modern age, and that this was not the fault of Islam but rather of Muslims, who are conservative.
Hence, she said, the process of modernization must begin with the religion itself, by reforming the rituals of worship. For example, she suggested changing the internal layout of mosques so as to allow men and women to pray together, introducing codes of proper conduct and appearance in mosques, and installing seats and dim lighting that will create an atmosphere of spirituality and calm, like in a church.
Asked about the phenomenon of women imams, which exists in some Western countries, she answered that the Arab world should start with forming institutions of women jurisprudents, publishing books on religion written by women and airing religious television programs presented by women.
The following are excerpts from the interview:
Question: "Is there any religious prohibition on changing the rationale behind the internal layout of mosques?"
Answer: "From the religious perspective, there is no ban on changing the internal layout of the mosque as we know it in the Islamic world today, and besides, the layout differs from mosque to mosque.
If the outer compounds of the Mecca [Grand] Mosque [could be] changed and expanded, why not change the internal design of mosques? The outer compounds of the [Grand] Mosque in Mecca are surrounded by ultra-modern skyscrapers. If you look at them from above, you realize that they resemble [the skyscrapers] of Manhattan in New York.
According to a hadith narrated by Abu Al-Darda, the Prophet said: "Whatever Allah permitted in His book [the Koran] is allowed, and whatever is forbidden [in that book] is forbidden – and whatever He was silent about is pardoned, so accept the pardon of Allah.'"
Question: "Is the absence of a [shared] internal space the only factor that prevents men and women from [worshiping] side by side in mosques?"
Answer: "That may be one of the reasons, but I think that habit, and the adherence to customs and tradition, are [the real factors] that prevent men and women from doing this.
Islam does not forbid them to mix, as evident from the fact that the Hajj and Umrah rituals are mixed and so is prayer at the Mecca compound. So why should they be segregated in other mosques?Any [reform] initiative of this sort is difficult in the beginning from the perspective of tradition, but from the religious perspective it is not forbidden.
The main goal we should pursue is to enlighten society by studying Islam from a cultural perspective that fosters equality and mutual respect between men and women instead of segregating them as though they come from two different planets. Let's make mosques similar to churches!" Read the full story here.

Saudi Arabia: "Women more resistant to beheading" that's why we shoot them now.
Saudi Arabia: "Women more resistant to beheading" that's why we shoot them now. (E24/7).
Convicted women sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia have been more resistant to beheading than men, prompting authorities to change the execution method to shooting, a well-known Saudi executioner has said.
Abu Bandar Al Bishi, a massive man who has beheaded scores of convicted criminals in public places in the Gulf Kingdom, said most of those brought to the execution area appear to be in “trance” ahead of their death.
Quoted by the Saudi daily Sabq, he denied social media reports that those sentenced to death are drugged just before their execution.
“Those brought for execution are not drugged..there is no medical intervention in their execution…they just appear to be in trance or half dead,” Bishi said.
“As for women, they are more resistant to execution than men…we used to behead them but the verdict has been changed to executing them by shooting. He said many convicts make requests just before their execution, adding that one asked for a cigarette. “Of course we did not give him a cigarette…if he had asked to pray before his death, then it would have been much better.”
Bishi said he uses a gun to execute women by shooting them in the head, adding that he does not stick to doctor’s instructions to shoot them in the heart.
“The doctor draws a mark towards the heart on the convict’s back…but I shoot them in the head because the bullet may miss the heart target if the convict moves.

Saudi Arabia has allegedly arrested a number of female models over their photos in an exhibition of luxurious cars.
Saudi Arabia has allegedly arrested a number of female models over their photos in an exhibition of luxurious cars. (IFP).
Pictures of young Saudi female models posing in front of the pavilion of a luxurious car company at a local show went viral on social media, prompting a punitive action from the Kingdom authorities.
Saudi authorities say organizers of a motor show have violated the principles of the Islamic Shariah by using young models.
Saudi National Program for Conventions and Exhibitions has taken penal action against the organizer of the 10th edition of the Luxury Motor Show (EXCS), Jeddah for a number of violations, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Thursday.
'According to a report by Asr-e Iran, as translated by IFP, four female models have already been arrested as of Saturday.'
The program has found the organizer guilty of violating the principles of the Islamic Shariah and the Saudi customs and traditions as well as the regulations of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development.
The Program emphasized that the Islamic values and customs shall be fully adhered to while organizing any exhibitions and conventions as well as the regulations for issuing licenses for holding exhibitions and events, Samaa TV reported.
Earlier, the Jeddah Police detained officials of the Motor Show organizing company and some other car companies as part of their investigation into the violations. This was in line with a directive from Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, emir of Makkah and advisor to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, SPA reported.
According to reports, the organizers of the show, which opened on Tuesday in Jeddah, had reportedly violated the principles of the Islamic Shariah and the Saudi customs and traditions. An investigation into the violations has been launched following the pictures of young Saudi women models posing in front of the pavilion of a luxurious car company at the show went viral on social media.
German Officials to Be Banned from Wearing Burqa and face veils.
German Officials to Be Banned from Wearing Burqa and face veils. (FP).
According to a report by Der Spiegel, citing a representative of the Ministry of internal Affairs of Germany, a bill has been proposed to ban public officials from wearing full Islamic face veils on the grounds that it obstructs clear communication.
The authors of the bill emphasize that the hidden face “restricts the ability of travelers and does not allow to assess the personality”.
“Open communication is a formative part of the ability to live together in a free, democratic society,” the draft bill read.
The proposal, presented by the German interior ministry on Friday, further states that the face veil hinders “the possibility to get to know and evaluate someone’s personality,” as reported by i24news and covered by YJC.
The bill calls on state officials to not wear “clothing that makes open communication impossible or more difficult,” including women employed as public officials.
It further stipulates that women who wear the veil show their faces during passport control, court rulings, and at polling stations.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere came in favor of a partial ban on the burqa in August amid a fierce national debate on integration.
“We agree that we reject the burqa, we agree that we want to introduce a legal requirement to show one’s face in places where it is necessary for our society’s coexistence — at the wheel, at public offices, at the registry office, in schools and universities, in the civil service, in court,” he said at the time.
According to official data collected in 2009, 28 percent of women in German identifying as Muslim wore some kind of covering, including either a headscarf or full face veil.
