Ex-Gitmo detainee Sabir Mahfouz Lahmar arrested in France - allegedly part of "recruiting network linked to" ISIS.

Ex-Gitmo detainee Sabir Mahfouz Lahmar arrested in France - allegedly part of "recruiting network linked to" ISIS. (nydailynews).
Detainee Sabir Mahfouz Lahmar has demonstrated a commitment to jihad, and would likely engage in anti-US activities if released.
A former Guantanamo Bay inmate released by the Obama 'admin' is among six people from an alleged jihadi recruiting network linked to the Islamic State group who were detained on Tuesday, a French judicial source said.
Among the suspects arrested was Sabir Mahfouz Lahmar, who was freed from the U.S. detention center in Cuba in 2009 after France agreed to accept him, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case.
Lahmar was one of six Algerians detained in Bosnia in 2001 on suspicion of plotting to bomb the U.S. embassy in Sarajevo. The Justice Department later backed off the allegations, but held the men at Guantanamo for years. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy agreed to take him in April 2009, and Lahmar moved to Bordeaux later that year.
The French official said Lamar, at 48, is the oldest of the four men and two women who were arrested and said that there were no indications the group was plotting an attack.
Five of the suspects were detained in Bordeaux, one in Paris.

Radicalized Muslim known to security agencies shot dead in 'terror' incident at Paris Orly airport.

Radicalized Muslim known to security agencies shot dead in 'terror' incident at Paris Orly airport. (DailyStar).

Two shooting incidents occurred within just over an hour and a half of each other in the capital of France.

A policeman was shot after pulling over a car in Stain, north Paris, during an “identity check” at 6.55am.

Then at 8.30am the man managed to wrestle a gun from a soldier before being shot dead at Orly Airport.

French police have now confirmed the man was a “radicalised Muslim” known to intelligence services.

The anti-terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation after the incident – and the father and brother of the man have been arrested.

The jihadi is understood to have been stopped by three police officers while making his way to the airport.

He pulled his papers, before producing a gun and shooting one of the cops.

His car sped off, and at some point he is understood to have switched vehicles.

The man, who police said was on a security watch list, had earlier fled the suburb of Stains in a Renault Clio stolen from a woman at gunpoint after opening fire on officers using a pistol, injuring one, during an identity check.

The car was later found abandoned. According to one report, it contained a bloodstained T-shirt.

After arriving at Orly airport, the man snatched a gun from a soldier patrolling the south terminal before being shot dead.

The terror comes as Prince William and Kate Middleton get ready to meet with French President Francois Hollande in Paris - but police said this incident will not impact the Royal visit.

Gun cops swooped on Orly which has 3000 passengers evacuated and had flights diverted to nearby Charles De Gaulle.

Commando police deployed the bomb squad robot amid fears the man was wearing an “explosive belt”.

French Interior Ministry confirmed the man was not carrying explosives.

Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said: “A man took a weapon from a soldier then hid in a shop in the airport before being shot dead by security forces.

Police sources have now confirmed the man’s identity and said he was a radicalized muslim known to the intelligence services. Cops are probing whether the man acted alone. More here.

French company Total preparing to drill off Cyprus for natural gas, says ministry source.

French company Total preparing to drill off Cyprus for natural gas, says ministry source. (Famagusta).

Total, along with Italy's ENI and Exxon Mobil, was awarded licenses for hydrocarbons exploration by Cyprus last month.

The ministry source said Total plans to drill in block 11 of Cyprus' exclusive economic zone, which shares a boundary to the south with the giant Egyptian Zohr natural gas well, the largest ever field discovered in the eastern Mediterranean.

"We do not know yet when the drill will start, but we were notified that it will be soon," the source said.

The Zohr discovery by ENI reinvigorated interest in the eastern Mediterranean natural gas as the drilling was done in carbonate layers, whereas previous successful natural gas drilling was carried out in lime layers.

A Total official said recently that the company's interest in Cypriot block 11 was prompted by its proximity to the Zohr discovery, estimated to contain 30 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Cypriot experts have said that block 11 sits on an undersea mountain range known as Eratosthenis, which was considered to be the source of all hydrocarbons in the eastern Mediterranean.

The news about the impending drilling comes as efforts to solve the Cyprus problem are nearing a peak, with guarantor countries Greece, Turkey and Britain joining in discussions about security arrangements.

Turkey objects to drilling by Cyprus without the active participation of Turkish Cypriots, who pulled out of the government and the state 53 years ago.

The discovery of natural gas in Cyprus' continental shelf by United States-based Noble Energy and nearby discoveries by Israel is considered by analysts to be a factor strongly influencing Turkey's interest in solving the Cyprus dispute.

Cyprus and Egypt signed a framework agreement last August for the transfer of natural gas discovered by Noble Energy via pipe to Egypt's liquefaction terminals. The gas field, about 85 km off Cyprus' southern shores, is estimated to contain 4.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Some analysts say that Turkey counts on joining in on the proceeds from the gas by offering facilities for a gas pipe through its territory to Europe.
An alternative route for the pipe is from the gas fields to Cyprus and Greece and from there to Prindisi in southern Italy.

This route had originally been excluded because of the high cost involved in the project which calls for a pipe 2,000 km long, most of it on the sea bed, capable of a yearly capacity of 12 billion cubic meters of gas.

But recent revised estimates by the European Union lowered the cost to around 5 billion euros, which is considered by specialists to be a viable proposition.

The director general of the energy ministries of Israel, Cyprus, Greece and Italy are to meet in Brussels on Monday to consider plans for the project.

Their talks will prepare a meeting of the Energy Ministers of the four countries scheduled for next month in Jerusalem.

Chechen man reports secret departure of his wife with four children to Syria.

Chechen man reports secret departure of his wife with four children to Syria. (Kavkav).

More than three weeks it is impossible to establish the whereabouts of Zareta Zubairaeva, 25, a resident of Grozny, and her four children, her husband Azamat has reported.

According to his story, his wife has secretly gone abroad. Turkish law enforcers take part in the search, as they believe that Zubairaeva had been recruited by militants.

Azamat said that Zareta stopped answering telephone calls on August 29. In search of his wife and children, he came to Turkey and is still there.

He stressed that he had no suspicions that his wife was interested in radical Islam.

Law enforcers told him that Zareta had been in correspondence with the recruiter for about a year.

Interesting detail is that two of their children were born in France which leads to the conclusion that she traveled often to France.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that a story about the search for Zubairaeva was shown, in particular, in the news programme of the Turkish NTV-Turkey Channel.

Belgian police arrested while 'dumping' a van load of migrants in France.

Belgian police arrested while 'dumping' a van load of migrants in France. (DS).

LILLE, France: Two Belgian policemen were arrested after being found in a French border town with a vanload of migrants, officials said Thursday, sparking a diplomatic incident.

The police van carrying 13 migrants and the two policemen was stopped by French police in Nieppe, a town on the Belgian border, on Tuesday evening, after crossing from Belgium.

The Belgian policemen were arrested and questioned before being released, an official source said.
The policemen, from Ypres, said they had picked up the migrants after finding them walking along a road in Belgium.

One of the officers, Georges Aeck, told Belgian broadcaster RTBF: "We didn't want to leave them... on the side of the road to walk to the border. "So we took them... in the direction they wanted to go."

Belgium's ambassador to France, Vincent Mertens de Wilmars, was summoned Thursday over the incident "so we can ask him for an explanation", the French interior ministry said.

French authorities have already expressed "their strongest condemnation after this initiative which does not conform to the normal work practices agreed between France and Belgium".

The Belgian police union said the French police had handcuffed their Belgian colleagues before questioning, a claim denied by the French authorities.

The migrants were taken to a border police station in the northern French city of Lille. Three minors were placed in the care of local authorities and the adults have been temporarily detained while their status is assessed.

The northern French port of Calais is a magnet for migrants who try to board lorries there to reach Britain, although it is not known whether the migrants in the incident had asked to be taken to Calais. Hmmmm.....Here you are carrying out a humanitarian 'action' and you get arrested :)

ISIS French-Language Magazine Features death fatwa against French Salafi preacher Rachid Abu Hudeyfa.

ISIS French-Language Magazine Features death fatwa against French Salafi preacher Rachid Abu Hudeyfa. (MemriLabs).

The 10th issue of ISIS’s French-Language magazine Dar Al-Islam, published August 20, 2016, features a 9-page tutorial on “computer security.” The spread is divided into 3 chapters, and features step-by-step instructions on how to send encrypted messages on Android devices. In particular, the encrypted application Chatsecure is mentioned in addition to CSipSimple.

This issue of the magazine also features a fatwa against French Salafi preacher Rachid Abu Hudeyfa.
The fatwa labels Abu Hudeyfa an apostate for calling on Muslims to vote in the French elections, supporting the Moroccan government, and sanctioning man-made law.
The magazine says Abu Hudeyfa is “wanted dead” and provides a photo of him and his address, as well as a satellite image of his mosque in Brest, France. Hmmm.......“the Revolution devours its children” .

Kamel Abderrahmani, a young Algerian univ student on murder of Priest: "Islamism is the disease of the century".

Kamel Abderrahmani, a young Algerian univ student on murder of Priest: "Islamism is the disease of the century". (AsiaNews).

The terrorist attack on the church of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, close to Rouen; in which the throat of the elderly priest who was celebrating Mass, Fr. Jacques Hamel, was slit; the taking of hostages in a sacred place, has caused great pain within the French Muslim communities. Already yesterday, a few hours by the attack, the French Council of the Muslim Faith condemned the act as "vile and barbaric", pleading for cohesion and unity among all the French.

Of all the messages sent to AsiaNews, we have decided to publish those of two long time friends: that the imam of Nimes, Hocine Drouiche, vice president of Imams of France; and of Kamel Abderrahmani, a young Algerian university student in France.

With courage, they are not afraid to accuse Islamism of being the "disease of the century", which "is taking Islam hostage” or call on all Muslims to "move" and make gestures of unity with other French and other religions.

This co-existence is precisely the element that Islamic radicals want to destroy. An editorial published in Dabiq (the Islamic State magazine), at the beginning of 2015, called for the "extinction of the gray zone", the area where many Muslims live in the West, between light and darkness, between the caliphate and the infidel world.

According to the IS all Muslims must leave the Western world and belong solely to the caliphate, destroying any possibility of dialogue. This is the context in which the actions of 19 year old Kermiche Adel, one of the church attackers killed by police, matured. The churches, with their welcome to all, the grief of Muslims for Christian victims, are part of this "gray area" that IS want eliminated, but are also the basis for the reconstruction of society, an element of resistance to a barbarism preached in the name of God.

Young Algerian university student in France.   Kamel Abderrahmani:

Again the forces of darkness have struck and this time a priest has been killed. With such savagry, he was beheaded in the name of God.
Only a fundamentalist could commit such an act, a fundamentalist, a madman ... I am not be afraid to say so. Islamism is the disease of the century. It is a disease that is not only capable of adapting its murderous techniques, but even "improve" them to kill even more people.
As a young Muslim, I appeal to all Muslims who do not subscribe to this ideology, to fight this ideology with all possible means. It is an ideology that is above all a danger to ourselves. Recently in Afghanistan, the mercenaries of this ideology committed genocide: 70 Muslims were killed . In Iraq, a few days before, more than 200 people were massacred. This ideology has exceeded all limits. It has also affected Islam's holy places: Medina, before it targeted a Christian church. It is time for Muslims to take action.

All my condolences to the Christian families in mourning.

Imam of Nimes, Hocine Drouiche, vice president of Imams of France: Hocine Drouiche:

I have heard of the odious attack that our Catholic brothers have suffered, as well as the assassination of our brother priest of Rouen. I express my condolences to the bereaved families and to the Catholic community in France and throughout the world.

It is an attack against our fellow Catholics, against France, against national unity and against Islam and against Muslims ... I firmly condemn this horrible attack on a holy place respected by the Muslim religion and all religions. The situation is becoming increasingly tragic and difficult.

I ask all French people to be vigilant, aware and remain united. I ask all imams and Muslim leaders, without exception, to come together, put aside their conflicts, to respond forcefully, clearly and strongly condemning this inhuman act, and remain vigilant so that Islam is no longer held hostage in the hands of extremists and the ignorant.

Morocco - Important Islamic state cell dismantled, 52 terrorists were arrested.

Morocco - Important Islamic state cell dismantled, 52 terrorists were arrested. (Aawsat).

Morocco said on Wednesday that it had arrested 52 suspected militants inspired by ISIS and that it had foiled several attacks in the North African country by seizing arms and bomb-making materials.

It is the largest group arrested in years and the latest of a series of cells that the authorities say they have found plotting attacks inside and outside Morocco.

The North African kingdom, an ally of the West against militancy, has been on high alert since 2014, when ISIS took control of large swathes of northern Iraq and Syria.

The 52 arrested were among 143 people investigated in many Moroccan cities and towns, the interior ministry said in a statement.

Many members of the group were planning to create an ISIS province (Wilayat) in Morocco, the statement said.

They intended to assassinate Moroccan security and military officers and tourists, as well as targeting prisons and festivals and other institutions in the country.

Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation, the judicial part of the Moroccan domestic intelligence service, has tracked suspected militants since ISIS established itself as a global threat.

Morocco has dismantled 38 suspected militant cells with ISIS ties since 2013, the statement said, adding 159 cells had been found since 2002.

Hundreds of militants from Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria have joined jihadists in Syria. Some are threatening to return and create new militant wings in their home countries, security experts have said.

Nearby Libya has become a major draw for jihadists from North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. ISIS has taken advantage of the security chaos there to build a base, operate training camps and take over the city of Sirte.

There are between 2,000 and 5,000 ISIS fighters from Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Mali,Morocco and Mauritania deployed in Sirte, Tripoli and Derna, according to a report drafted by U.N. chief Bank Ki-moon.

Jean-Paul Laborde, U.N. assistant secretary general and head of its Counter-Terrorism Committee, has also said that nearly 30,000 “foreign terrorist fighters” are currently in Syria and Iraq.

“There are nearly 30,000, and now that the territory held by ISIS is shrinking in Iraq, we are seeing them return, not only to Europe but to all of their countries of origin, like Tunisia, Morocco,” Laborde said recently.

Also Wednesday, Italian police said they have arrested two Moroccan residents on suspicion of distributing pro-ISIS propaganda.Police said the two men living in the Liguria region bordering France have previous arrests for dealing drugs and other offenses. A third Moroccan is under investigation.

The investigation was launched when a young woman reported receiving a photo on WhatsApp showing a woman posing with a machine gun in position to fire. The photo originated from a number in Morocco that was not in the phone’s address book.

The woman told police she had lent the phone to a Moroccan resident of a refugee home several months earlier. From there, investigators traced a network of “possible activism of the three suspects involving proselytizing for the self-proclaimed Islamic State.” More here.

Mother and three daughters knifed by alleged Moroccan in French holiday resort for being 'scantily dressed'

Mother and three daughters knifed by alleged Moroccan in French holiday resort for being 'scantily dressed' (Mirror).

The 46-year-old woman and her three daughters - aged 14, 12 and eight - are said to have been targeted while holidaying near Laragne in Hautes-Alpes in southern France.

An eight-year-old girl is fighting for her life after a mum and her three daughters were reportedly stabbed in a French holiday resort for being 'scantily dressed'.

The French family are said to have been targeted while holidaying in Garda-Colombe in the Hautes-Alpes near Montpellier in southern France.

The 46-year-old woman and the girls - aged eight, 12 and 14 - were all attacked before the knifeman fled the scene - according to police.

The eight-year-old was airlifted to hospital in nearby Grenoble with a punctured lung and is in a critical condition.

The 37-year-old man, who is said to be of Moroccan origin, has since been arrested following the incident at around 10am local time (9am UK time) this morning.

Police say the motive for the attack remains 'vague' but local media reports state the attacker had made references to the females being 'too lightly dressed'.

Eye-witnesses said the mum and her daughters had been having breakfast when they were attacked.

Local prosecutor Raphael Balland told the AFP news agency: "The motive of the attack is very blurred." Read the full story here.

Video - French special forces inside Syria, embedded with YPG/SDF in Manbij offensive vs ISIS

Video - French special forces inside Syria, embedded with YPG/SDF in Manbij offensive vs ISIS.(RT).

France has deployed its special forces on the ground in northern Syria to advise rebels and help them fight Islamic State, a French Defense Ministry official has revealed to AFP.

"The offensive at Manbij is clearly being backed by a certain number of states including France. It's the usual support - it's advisory," the official told the agency.

Until now, France admitted the presence of some 150 special forces in the region, all of them in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Manbij is a key strategic town under Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) control in northern Syria. It’s a waypoint between the Turkish border and the IS-held Raqqa.

The latest comment isn’t the first hint at France’s presence in Syria: last Friday, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told the Public Senat TV channel that Paris was “providing support through weapons supplies, air presence and advice."

France isn't the only Western country in Syria: about two weeks ago, footage emerged of US special forces fighting alongside Kurdish militia near the city of Raqqa, a month after Obama said some 250 troops would be deployed in the region.

French Delegation Arrives in Israel to Study Israeli Counter-Terror methods.

French Delegation Arrives  in Israel to Study Israeli Counter-Terror methods. (Hamodia).

A six-member French parliamentary delegation arrived in Israel on Sunday to study Israel’s counter-terror methods, in the wake of recent attacks in France and elsewhere in Europe.

The delegation represents a 30-member panel of inquiry established after the events of November 13. Panel members have also traveled to Turkey and Greece to consult with security officials.

The French MPs met with chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Avi Dichter, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and with senior security officials.

Jewish MP Meir Habib explained:
For 70 years, Israel has been on the front line in the fight against terror. That is why MP Pierre Lellouche and I suggested to members of the committee to visit Israel. I informed Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu of the planned visit and he said that Israel would cooperate with the delegation and with France in general in all efforts to fight terror.”
