The proposed visa liberalization for Turkish citizens travelling to the EU could potentially have an impact on the terrorist risk in the EU in as far as the movement of terrorists of Turkish citizenship to and from the Schengen area is concerned, an extract from the report, seen by The Telegraph newspaper, reads.


Criminals could also take advantage of the unrestricted entry to the European Union to pursue their own goals, including through drug trafficking, importing illegal firearms and people smuggling into Europe, the report revealed.

"It can be expected that, as soon as Turkish citizens will obtain visa-free entry to the EU, foreign nationals will start trying to obtain Turkish passports in order to pretend to be Turkish citizens and enter the EU visa free, or use the identities of Turkish citizens, or to obtain by fraud the Turkish citizenship. This possibility may attract not only irregular migrants, but also criminals or terrorists," the report stressed.

The European Union is set to give conditional approval on Wednesday for Turks to gain visa-free access to the Schengen zone, meeting a key demand by Ankara to keep a migrant crisis deal alive.
The European Commission, the executive arm of the 28-nation EU, will say Turkey must still meet further measures to access the passportless Schengen area without visas by June, sources told AFP on Tuesday.

Ankara has demanded that the visa requirement be scrapped in exchange for taking back migrants who land in Greece under a seal signed in March, but there are still widespread concerns among EU states, especially over human rights issues in Turkey.

"The Commission will put forward a plan to include Turkey in the list of countries exempted from visas," a European source told AFP, adding that "only 64 out of the 72 criteria are fulfilled" and that the offer, therefore, remains conditional.

Turkey has to meet a list of 72 criteria – ranging from biometric passports to respect for human rights – that were set when Brussels and Ankara first talked about 90-day visa-free travel to the Schengen area.

EU member states and the European Parliament must still approve the Turkey visa plan after it clears the Commission, which is by no means a foregone conclusion.

Germany and France have proposed an emergency brake or "snap back mechanism" under which it could halt visa-free travel if large numbers of Turks stay in the EU illegally or if there are a large number of asylum applications by Turks.

Even politicians in favor of EU membership, such as Home Secretary Theresa May,have signalled that further enlargement needs to be reconsidered for countries with "poor populations and serious problems with organised crime, corruption and sometimes even terrorism".

Ministers have emphasised that the UK has the right of veto over future prospective members, while insisting the talks with Turkey and other countries are unlikely to be rushed and, as such, the issue will not come to a head for a while.

The question of whether Turkey and six Balkan countries will join the European Union and, if so, what it will mean for the UK has become a live issue in the EU referendum campaign.

Campaigners wanting to leave the EU say such a further enlargement could result in a migration "free-for-all" and pose a "serious and direct threat" to UK public services. Is there any truth in this?

Nothing will happen for at least three years, because European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker imposed a five-year moratorium on enlargement in 2014.

Seasoned EU-watchers say Montenegro and Serbia are, to coin a phrase, at the front of the queue, while there are major hurdles to overcome with Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia.

As for Turkey, the challenges it faces in meeting the membership criteria are so big, and it has become such a thorny issue, that its prospects are receding.

In short, yes. Turkey has a customs union with the EU, but its troubled relations with the Republic of Cyprus have always been a unique stumbling block - a situation exacerbated by Cyprus' own admission to the EU in 2004.

Turkey would also be the first country with a majority Muslim population to join the EU, in itself a major development.

Some see a future advantage for Europe if many young Turkish workers fill jobs, as ageing populations cause the labour force to shrink.

But the migrant crisis, caused by the five-year civil war in Syria, has fueled doubts among those EU politicians who, in principle, have always been in favor of letting Turkey in.

More than two million Syrian refugees have fled to Turkey, a country which already had a population of nearly 76 million.

EU leaders are desperate to uphold free movement rules, enshrining the right of any EU national to live and work elsewhere in the union. They are nervous that admitting a country of Turkey's size could make this untenable.

Under a recent agreement with Turkey to curb the migrant influx to Greece, the EU undertook to "re-energise" the stalled accession talks.

But there are major concerns about Turkish human rights violations, including curbs on the media and rule of law - all key issues when judging a country's fitness to join the EU.

At the same time, economic hardship, Islamist terror and the migrant crisis have fuelled a nationalist backlash in much of Europe, often expressed as hostility to Islam.

It is time to question some of the traditional British assumptions about our engagement with the EU.  Do we stop the EU going in the wrong direction by shouting on the sidelines, or by leading and making the case for taking Europe in a better direction?  

And do we really still think it is in our interests to support automatically and unconditionally the EU’s further expansion?  

The states now negotiating to join the EU include Albania, Serbia and Turkey – countries with poor populations and serious problems with organised crime, corruption, and sometimes even terrorism.  

We have to ask ourselves, is it really right that the EU should just continue to expand, conferring upon all new member states all the rights of membership?  

Do we really think now is the time to contemplate a land border between the EU and countries like Iran, Iraq and Syria?  Having agreed the end of the European principle of “ever closer union”, it is time to question the principle of ever wider expansion. A man was handed a two year jail sentence Friday after becoming the first in England to be convicted of keeping his wife “in domestic servitude“.

In what the Crown Prosecution Service said was the first case of its kind in England, London’s Woolwich Crown Court heard that Safraz Ahmed, 34, imprisoned and beat his wife after an arranged marriage in Pakistan.

The mechanic from Charlton in southeast London forced his wife, Sumara Iram, to cook, clean and look after his mother from 5am to midnight every day after she moved to Britain in 2012.

He also slapped her in the face when she asked him to consummate their marriage, throwing tins of cat food at her head and covering her face with a cushion in other attacks.

Iram, 28, who had a master’s degree in Islamic Studies, was forbidden from leaving the house alone and took an overdose before eventually calling the emergency services in 2014, the court heard.

Sentencing Ahmed to two years in prison for holding a person in domestic servitude, Judge Christopher Hehir told him: “She was bullied and controlled by you, given little money and expected to cook, clean and look after your family as if she was a skivvy.

“She described your behaviour as physical and mental torture and in my judgement, she was right.”


Damaris Lakin, a Crown Prosecution Service lawyer who worked on the trial, said it was a “ground-breaking case which demonstrates how far we have come in tackling modern-day slavery”.

Britain is no longer a Christian country and should stop acting as if it is, a top-level inquiry into the place of religion in society has concluded, provoking a backlash from politicians and the Church of England.

A two-year commission, chaired by the former senior judge Baroness Butler-Sloss and involving leading religious leaders of all faiths, calls for public life to be systematically de-Christianized.

It says the decline of church-going and the rise of Islam and other beliefs mean a “new settlement” is needed for religion in the U.K., giving more official influence to non-religious voices and those of non-Christian faiths.

The report triggered a quarrel Sunday night as it was condemned by cabinet ministers as “seriously misguided,” while the Church of England said it appeared to have been “hijacked” by humanists.

The commission has attracted particular controversy because of the authority of those behind it. Patrons include Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury; Lord Woolf, the former chief justice; and Sir Iqbal Sacranie, the former general secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain. In 2008 Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams faced a huge backlash in the right-wing press, which had picked up on a rather arcane speech that appeared to endorse the adoption of some aspects of Islamic sharia law in Britain. Williams argued that other religions enjoyed tolerance of their own laws and called for "constructive accommodation" with Muslim practice in areas such as marital disputes.

Baroness Warsi, the first Muslim woman to sit in Cabinet, handed official posts to people linked to Islamist groups, including a man involved in an “unpleasant and bullying” campaign to win planning permission for the controversial London “megamosque” proposed by a fundamentalist Islamic sect.

He sits – alongside other radicals or former radicals and their allies – on a “cross-Government working group on anti-Muslim hatred” set up by Lady Warsi and Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister.

Undercover video shot by an animal welfare group appearing to show the brutal treatment of sheep at a Yorkshire abattoir has rekindled the debate over whether animals need to be stunned before they are killed.

The footage gathered by campaigning group Animal Aid, shows sheep being kicked, threatened with knives and thrown into solid structures. In one case a worker appears to be seen pinning a sheep’s head down with his foot. Four slaughtermen at halal slaughterhouse, Bowood Lamb in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, have had their operating licences suspended and the company said one worker had been sacked.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has launched an investigation into the footage, saying there is “no excuse for treating animals in the way shown on the video” and adding that prosecutions could follow.

Over three days in December, activists from Animal Aid used hidden cameras to record footage which appeared to show:

• A worker hacking and sawing at animals’ throats, in direct contravention of Islamic practice. In one instance it took up to five attempts to sever blood vessels

• Sheep being kicked in the face and head, lifted by their ears, fleeces or legs and hurled into solid structures

• A worker standing on the neck of a conscious sheep and bouncing up and down

• Staff erupting into laughter over a sheep bleeding to death with spectacles drawn around her eyes in green paint

• Employees taunting and frightening animals by waving knives, smacking them on the head and shouting at them.

The FSA said: “The Food Standards Agency takes animal welfare at abattoirs very seriously, which is why we immediately suspended the licences of the slaughtermen involved.

“There is no excuse for treating animals in the way shown on the video and we are therefore investigating the footage with a view to prosecution.” Read the full story here.

Nursery school staff and registered childminders must report toddlers at risk of becoming terrorists, under the so-called counter-terrorism measures proposed by the UK government, media report said.

The proposal, issued by the Home Office and included in the Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill, is currently before the parliament, The Guardian reported on Sunday.

The proposed measure states that British nurseries and early years childcare providers, along with schools and universities, have a duty “to prevent people being drawn into terrorism.”

This is while critics regard the proposal as “unworkable,” accusing the Tory-led Coalition government of treating teachers and carers as “spies.” They have also raised concerns over the practicalities of making it a legal requirement for staff to report toddlers.

Isabella Sankey, the policy director at human rights body Liberty, commented on the proposal, saying, “Turning our teachers and childminders into an army of involuntary spies will not stop the terrorist threat.”

Such a move “will sow seeds of mistrust, division and alienation from an early age,” she added.

Headteachers’ union NAHT also criticized the plans, with its General Secretary Russel Hobby saying nursery and school staff should not be required to act as a police service.

A Home office spokesman, however, defended the proposed measure, arguing “it is important that children are taught fundamental British values in an age-appropriate way” and “we do expect them (staff) to take action when they observe behavior of concern.” Hmmm.......lets start with all Palestinians residing in the UK?

A senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), in an article published Thursday, asked why Britain’s Royal Family refuses to visit Israel when they make frequent stops throughout the Arab world.

“In just the month of November 2014 we found Prince Andrew and Prince Harry at what the Foreign Office must have considered a diplomatic necessity: the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix,” wrote Elliott Abrams, who worked in both the administrations of George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan.

“Prince Andrew also visited Saudi Arabia (at the request of the Foreign Office, it was announced). And Prince Harry also visited Oman.” 

Abrams then pointed out that the Queen has never set foot in Israel and Prince Charles visited the Jewish state only once: for Yitzhak Rabin’s funeral.

According to Abrams, there are only three “logical explanations” for the gross omission. One, he said, is that the Royal Family only likes to visit other royals and tries to stay away from republics. However, Abrams said Prince Charles visited Egypt more than once, “so there goes that theory.'

A second possible explanation is that the Royal Family fears a visit to Israel may harm the United Kingdom and its business with Arab dictators. But such reasoning is absurd, Abrams explained. “Given the current tacit alliance of Israel and the Gulf monarchies against Iran and ISIS, the likelihood that such visits would have harmed the UK is impossibly small.”

Abrams’ final suggestion is that the Royal Family won’t visit Israel because either they or the Foreign Office “harbor deep and undying enmity toward the Jewish state.”

FURIOUS David Cameron last night conceded that Britain had been pushed closer to a European Union exit after receiving an eye-watering £1.7 billion Brussels bill.

Red-faced with anger, the Prime Minister vowed to block payment of the “completely unacceptable” surcharge presented by EU officials in a surprise overhaul of national contributions.

“It is not acceptable, it is an appalling way to behave,” Mr Cameron said.

Calls for the UK to withdraw from the EU intensified yesterday following the cash demand, which will cost every family in the country £65.

And he admitted the latest insult to UK taxpayers – with the bill due to be paid by December 1st – was undermining his drive to keep Britain in the EU.

When pressed on the issue by the Daily Express he said: “It certainly doesn’t help, put it that way.”

Mr Cameron insisted: “It is an unacceptable way for this organisation to work, to suddenly present a bill like this for such a vast sum of money with so little time to pay it.

“And it is an unacceptable way to treat one of the biggest contributors to the European Union.”

Repeatedly thumping his lectern with a clenched fist, he added: “I am not paying that bill on December 1st.

"If people think I am, they’ve got another thing coming; it is not going to happen.

“As an important contributor to this organisation, we are not suddenly going to get out our chequebook and write a cheque for two billion euros; it is not happening.”

As the row deepened, there was fresh pressure for the Prime Minister to accelerate his promised in-or-out referendum on Britain’s EU membership.

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage warned that Mr Cameron was in “real political trouble”.

“Yes, it’s outrageous, but that’s how the European Union works,” he said.

“He’s in a very weak position. He can do nothing about this."

“And I think, really, he’s now being pushed into a position where, unless he brings forward his referendum promise, I think he’s in real political trouble.” More here.

Egyptian media is reporting that based on inside sources, the International Organization of the Muslim Brotherhood has decided to transfer their offices to Graz, Austria and three other unidentified European cities following the announcement of an investigation into the Brotherhood’s activities in the UK. Highlights from a translated summary of the Youm7.com Arabic language report include:

• A meeting was held featuring Ibrahim Munir, Ibrahim Salah, and Dr. Mahmoud Hussein who were identified as the permanent members of the International Organization together with 17 unidentified new members.

• The three permanent members agreed to transfer their offices to Graz, Austria and other three European countries following the announcement of the British inquiry into Muslim Brotherhood activities in the UK.

• The meeting focused on the latest developments in Egypt, the development of a new strategy to stop the expected May elections for Presidency, and a new website created to expose the flaws in the election.

• Members of the International Organization have been holding meetings in Brussels with senior European figures aimed at persuading the European Parliament to put pressure on Egypt regarding the treatment of Muslim Brotherhood leaders in Egyptian prisons.

• The International Organization is in the process of establishing the “Jihadi Internet Army” and the “Rabia Army”  aimed at destroying Egyptian banks and other state institutions.

It goes on to explain where in the airport you can go to build a suitcase bomb, shot gun and even a crossbow.

 Winter 2013 into 2014 is forecast to be “exceptionally severe” with above-average snowfall and plunging temperatures.
Long-range weather forecasts warn of bitter Arctic gales leading to feet-deep snow drifts right up until February.
Snow forecasts for winter 2013 suggest much of the country will be hit by heavy wintry downpours with no let up well into next year.
As lovers of the white stuff ask ‘will it snow?’ this winter, the general consensus among long-range forecasters is a resounding ‘yes’.
However they said winter could bring chaos similar to the big freeze of 2010/11 which saw airports close and roads grind to a standstill for months.
The warnings come as temperatures begin to dip around the UK with the first “real taste” of winter likely to hit next week.
James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said Britain is braced for “copious” snowfall this winter with extreme cold expected to last into the spring.
He added that Britain faces “an incomparable scenario to anything we have experienced in modern times”.
He said: “An exceptionally prolonged period of widespread cold is highly likely to develop throughout this winter and last into next spring.
“It will be accompanied by snow drifts of several feet and long-lasting snow accumulations on a widespread scale.

“A scenario similar to December 2010 is likely to develop, but on a more prolonged scale in terms of overall duration.”
January is likely to bring the worst of the weather although Britain will shiver in below-average temperatures for the next three months.
He said: “This is certainly a record-breaking and historical weather period which is likely to see one of the coldest and snowiest starts to British New Year in a very long time.”
Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said this winter could be the worst for decades.
He said: “We are looking at something on a par with 2010 when Britain was hit by particularly bad big freeze.
“The focal point at this stage seems to be January, when we could see widespread heavy snow and below-average temperatures.
“This could stretch out for weeks, meaning we could be looking at the worst winter big freeze for decades.”

Plans for a ground-breaking new Islamic index on the London Stock Exchange are being announced by David Cameron in a drive to establish the City as one of the world's leading centres of Islamic finance.

Addressing the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) meeting in London, the Prime Minister will say that the UK also intends to become the first country outside the Islamic world to issue its own Islamic bonds, known as sukuk.

The announcements reflect the Government's determination to tap into the fast-growing global market in Islamic investments, which have risen by 150 per cent since 2006 and are expected to be worth £1.3 trillion next year.

The British Muslim Initiative has issued a press release giving details on the 2nd “International Global March to Jerusalem.” According to the announcement:

Press Release | 23 May, 2013 As part of the International Global March to Jerusalem, Londoners from different backgrounds are expected to converge outside the Israeli Embassy in London, to protest the ongoing Zionist occupation of Jerusalem.

Protesters are concerned about the effects of the occupation, particularly violations against the city and its indigenous Arab inhabitants – both Christian and Muslim. Israel continues its racist practices inside Jerusalem which contravene UN resolutions and international law.

Organisers of the London GMJ will stage a march in London on Friday 7th June 2013, coinciding with the 46th anniversary of the occupation of the eastern part of the Holy City, which is home to Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and other sacred sites. Addressing the march on 7th June will be prominent speakers, including politicians, community and faith leaders, activists, and campaigners.

Zaher Birrawi, spokesperson for the London GMJ, explained that ‘one of the purposes of the London march is to make a strong stand against Israel’s racist policies and the systematic Judaisation of the Holy City’.

Convenor of 2012 GMJ London march, Sarah Colborne, remarked that ‘it is unacceptable that Israel is allowed to perpetrate policies and crimes against the Palestinians with impunity in full sight of the world community. We are here to mobilise popular efforts towards exposing the racist character of the Israeli occupation.’

Key UK members of the Global March International Central Committee are Zaher Birawi, a leader at the Palestinian Return Center with many ties to the UK Muslim Brotherhood and Mohammad Sawalha, also tied to the UK Brotherhood and said by Israeli intelligence to be a former Hamas terrorist commander. Thousands of people living in Britain could be 'on the path' to becoming violent radicals and terrorists, the Home Secretary said today.

Theresa May gave the warning as she confirmed a fresh crackdown on extremist groups who could be a threat to national security. The senior Tory also used an interview on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show to criticise the Corporation for interviewing radical cleric Anjem Choudary. 

He was given star billing on a discussion panel with Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark, as he insisted he was not a ‘hate preacher’ or Islamic extremist.

Refusing to condemn the killers of Lee Rigby, the British drummer crushed by a vehicle and then hacked to death with machetes, Choudary even suggested that ‘one man killed in a street’ was hardly proper vengeance for those killed by ‘Britain and the U.S.’ in wars overseas. 

Mrs May said: 'I think Anjem Choudary has disgusting views and I think it is right that we look at how those views are being presented and I think there were many people who did indeed say "What is the BBC doing interviewing Anjem Choudary?" 

After his appearance two days ago, the BBC was branded 'idiotic' and 'insensitive'.

Asked if she believed there were thousands at risk of radicalisation in the UK, she replied 'potentially'. 'We have people at different points on what could be the path to violent extremism,' she said. She added that the Government 'Prevent' scheme designed to reduce radicalism in Britain had spoken to 2,000 people at risk in the past year, particularly in prison.Read the full story here.
