A woman on the same boat as Alan Kurdi says the boy’s father is a people smuggler who begged her not to dob him in.

Zainab Abbas said Abdullah Kurdi had lied to the world after the image of his dead three-year-old son on a Turkish beach sparked a global outpouring of support for Syrian refugees.

“Yes, it was Abdullah Kurdi driving the boat,” Ms Abbas told Network Ten through her cousin Lara Tahseen today.

Ms Abbas also lost two children when the boat capsized shortly after leaving Bodrum for the Greek islands.

After the tragedy, Mr Kurdi told the media he took over steering the boat after the captain panicked and jumped ship.

But Ms Abbas said Mr Kurdi was the driver of the boat, and the man she paid to book her passage told her it would be safe because the driver was taking his wife and two children.

“When I lost my kids, I lost my life, how can he lie to the media?” her cousin Ms Tahseen said, translating for Ms Abbas.

“He said, ‘Please don’t dob me in.’ That was in the water.”

Ms Abbas said Mr Kurdi was speeding in the overcrowded boat, which did not have enough life jackets.

She said her husband told him to be careful just before the boat capsized, reportedly killing at least 12 people.

Ms Abbas is now in Iraq and her family has called on the federal government to include them in the 12,000 refugees Australia has pledged to take in.Read the full story here. More here from the National Post.

UN calls on EU to Flood admit up to 200,000 refugees.(DW).

The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Refugees has called for up to 200,000 refugees to be shared across the European Union. Various meetings are due to be held across the EU to discuss the crisis.

Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said on Friday that EU member states would be bound to the "mass relocation program." "People who are found to have a valid protection claim ... must then benefit from a mass relocation program, with the mandatory participation of all EU member states," Guterres said in a statement.

"No country can do it alone, and no country can refuse to do its part," he declared.

A European source told AFP news agency that European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker would next week unveil a plan for the relocation of at least 120,000 more refugees. Push for EU solidarity

Guterres' call on Friday followed similar demands from Germany and France for a binding EU quota on the number of refugees taken in by each member state.

"So many refugees are arriving at our external borders that we can't leave Italy or Greece alone to deal with the task," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said. "Neither can it be that three countries, like Sweden, Austria and Germany, are left alone with the lion's share of the task," she added.

Poland warned on Friday that the EU must tackle the causes behind the huge migrant influx or risk being inundated with millions of refugees. "The scale of the migration is enormous, so we can't focus - I'm talking about the whole of Europe - on allocating illegal migrants without fighting the causes [of their arrival]," Schetyna told private Radio Zet.

"We have to think of how to stop the illegal migration. Otherwise [we may have] soon have 3-4 million economic refugees," he added. Hmmmm.....If or when the UN Food program starts cutting aid to the refugees the real 'Reconquista' of Europe will begin in earnest.Read the full story here.

It’s the most heartbreaking thing about the story of three-year-old Alan Kurdi, the Syrian refugee child lying dead on a Turkish beach in his tiny shoes, his blue shorts and his perfect little red shirt. It is also the most overlooked and least-understood part of the story of that photograph that has driven people all around the world half-mad with rage.

The little angel never had a hope in hell.

It had all seemed so hopeful, at least for a fleeting few weeks. Alan and his five-year-old brother Ghalib and their mother Rehenna and their father Abdullah were going to get out. They were going to make it. Uncle Mohammad and Auntie Ghuson and his four cousins were going to make it, too. They were all going to join Auntie Tima in Canada, and everything was going to be all right.

But they never had a chance, and the plan was dead in the water long before it even appeared as part of a meticulously developed plan contained in a carefully constructed, elaborate submission, with appendices, drafted by the smart young Coquitlam-Port Moody New Democratic Party MP Fin Donnelly and submitted directly to Citizenship & Immigration Minister Chris Alexander.

They were all going to make it to Canada by way of a G5 private-sponsorship application for refugee resettlement in Canada.

When the Ottawa Citizen and the National Post published some of the photographs from that Turkish beach and reported that the Kurdis had been hoping to make their way to Canada, there was another wave of rage. We all wanted a villain to blame, and Chris Alexander leapt into the role by having come off like a thoroughly insensitive jackass, that same day, on the very subject of the Syrian refugee crisis, on CBC’s Power and Politics.

But simple stories like these almost always prove to be complicated. There is nothing quite so complicated, and at the same time straightforward, as the reasons why a fair assessment would find that there was probably little if anything Alexander could have done for the Kurdi families. The villainy, if that is what it is, is to be found mostly in Turkey’s exemption from certain provisions of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

The United Nations High Commission on Refugees does not register asylum seekers in Turkey. Turkey does not issue exit visas to refugees who do not possess referrals from the UNHCR.

In Turkey, there are no “refugee camps.” There are Turkish “temporary protection shelters.” The Kurdis had no papers, no UNHCR refugee designations, and no passports, and therefore did not qualify for exit visas.

That is why their plans to obtain G5 refugee-resettlement approvals from Citizenship and Immigration Canada were doomed from the start, and it is why Alan and Ghalib and their parents ended up boarding that boat. The Monument Counter is an on-line (Internet) monument to commemorate the women who lost their lives due to domestic violence. It is also a counter that is updated every day. It has been announced that between January and September 2012 that the 125 women lost their lives due to domestic violence. The Monument Counter bunun has been conceived as a device to generate public awareness Concerning the rising number of deaths due to domestic violence and bring light into unknown data. This website will have the names of the dead woman and is not only an awareness raising mechanism directed against society Concerning domestic violence but also is a monument for the dead woman. The counter masks a rising threat while also reporting about the continuity of violence. The Monument Counter does not only demonstrate a worrying increase, a burdensome accumulation but also invites an urgent count down. As the counter counts up, hope Vanishes. It Disappears one by one. 

The main page of the Monument Counter is the counter itself. It contains a counter showing the women who have died because of domestic violence and a page that consists of the names of the dead women. This page builds a semi-wall with the names of the dead women who have been killed between 2008-2015 and will be updated daily. The wall will have a separate color for each year and will thus show the difference between years. When one clicks on the name of a woman there will be another page.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Thursday lambasted an actress who called for artists to join forces to prevent construction of a masjid inside the historic Rumelihisarı fortress along the shores of the Bosporus.

“Someone claimed to be an artist comes out at an award ceremony and says ‘we will not let a masjid be built here.' Who are you expelling from whose land? It is already a place of worship,” Erdoğan said in a speech at a ceremony in Ankara marking the inauguration of a series of projects undertaken by the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TİKA).

The artist Erdoğan targeted in his speech was actress Defne Halman, who called on Turkey's artists to unite forces to oppose the planned mosque which will be built on an amphitheater inside Rumelihisarı, which has been used as a concert venue for decades.

Erdoğan defended the masjid construction, praising those who undertook the project. “Those who fail to honor their past can have no future. No one will be able to prevent this,” Erdoğan said.

Apparently referring to the opposition pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), which has pledged to abolish Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate, the president added, “Those who attack the Diyanet [Religious Affairs Directorate] and remain silent in the face of the Vatican's activities to the detriment of our country will not be able to prevent it either.” Hmmmm....Cause with 17,000 new Mosques you are bound to be short of mosques? While the discussion over Erdoğan and the government abusing Islam for their political gained momentum, the pro-government daily, Yeni Akit, published an article first published by a pro-government news portal, Haber Seyret, claiming that Erdoğan is a caliph and, along with Davutoğlu, waiting for the appearance of Mahdi, the Messiah.

The article asserted that Mahdi will take an active role in the war in Syria and after the defeat of the armies of the Western powers in that country, he will head for Jerusalem to conquer the city with the help of the caliph.

Moreover, the article claimed that the presidential palace known as "Ak Saray" was constructed to govern the provinces that will be occupied by Mahdi's army. The article also stated that Erdoğan and Davutoğlu want to be martyred fighting against enemies.

Meanwhile, Diyarbakır Bar Association President Tahir Elçi also said on Monday that Erdoğan is violating the Constitution by abusing religious values by holding a copy of Quran while addressing the crowd in several provinces and called on the judiciary to take action against Erdoğan.

"Our laws prescribe that the president cannot be tried except for the offense of treason, but Erdoğan is clearly violating the Constitution," Elçi noted.


Holding a press conference with a group of lawyers in Diyarbakır, Elçi stressed that Erdoğan has worked to eliminate the state of law and the Constitution, which should be considered a treasonable offense and he called on the judiciary to take action against the violation of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Selim Temurci, chairman of the AK Party İstanbul branch, criticized opponents of the AK Party, defining them as being "irreligious" for not supporting the ruling party.

Attending an event to mark Handicapped Week on Sunday, Temurci alleged that those who struggle against the AK Party are the ones who are truly handicapped. Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Levent Gök held a press conference in Parliament on Friday where he gave the podium to citizen Alaaddin Ercan, a resident of Ankara’s Sincan neighborhood, who claims the borders between Turkey and Syria are as open as ever and that there is an active route between Turkey and Syria where countless citizens are joining up with ISIL.

Noting that 21 members of his family had gone and joined ISIL, with five already dead, Ercan claimed that there were bus lines that openly take people back and forth between Turkey and ISIL. He added that the state had to assign him a security detail because of death threats levelled against him and his family.

“Everyone from children to adults stay up until morning keeping watch,” he said.

Ercan claimed that they were actively “brainwashing” the residents of Sincan towards radicalism, “But nobody even cares.

There is a price on my head, my own siblings are threatening to kill me.” He added that at the moment both his brothers and his sister-in-law were a part of ISIL, that they had been introduced to radicalism 8 years ago as members of Hizbul Tahrir and began migrating to Syria, first one by one then as entire families.

He added that there were many families going through the same problems in the area, “but they’re all too afraid to speak up,” criticizing the Directorate of Religious Affairs for not issuing a fatwa against ISIL.

The political asylum cases originating from Turkey will likely increase against the background of intensified political persecution of opponents and critics in Turkey by the growing authoritarian and Islamist regime that is bent on abusing the criminal justice system with partisan judges and prosecutors.

Not a single day passes in Turkey without a journalist, academic, artist, businessperson or ordinary citizen getting slammed by an investigation or trial for defamation of Turkey’s political Islamist leaders, who rose to power through elections but are now determined to derail democracy, and trample rights and freedoms.

The dramatic surge in the number of prosecutions frustrates many Turks who now question whether Turkey is a good place to live and raise family. Turkey had generated a wave of political asylum seekers in the past during turbulent periods of military coups and the repression of leftists, Kurds, Alevis and conservative groups in the 80s and 90s. But perhaps, for the first time in Turkish history, we have started to notice a completely new pattern of political asylum seekers that originate from Turkey: Those running from the persecution relentlessly pursued by the political Islamist government.

These politically-motivated cases — made to appear as if they are criminal investigations — are nothing but instruments in the hands of political Islamists used to instill a climate of fear of the regime, intimidate the opposition and silence critics.

The long list of objections listed by bar associations and teams of defense lawyers in political witch-hunt cases across Turkey is a testament to the fact that the rule of law is effectively suspended in Turkey. The legal protections that are afforded to the — unjustly — accused as part of due process and the right to a fair trial are being flagrantly violated. The verdict is often a forgone conclusion whereby a loyalist judge was ordered by political authorities to jail defendants no matter what the evidence says, if there is any at all.

Under this terrible McCarthyism era Turkey has been going through under the political Islamist and authoritarian regime, nobody can blame anyone who decides to flee the country in order to find a safe haven until the rule of law and democracy are re-established and the practice of instigating witch-hunts under the guise of pursuing criminals ceases in Turkey. Those who decide to run away cannot be classified as fugitives from justice when there is no justice in Turkey. Hmmmm....the worst thing is that European politicians allow this to happen in exchange for promises of cheap gas delivered through Turkey.Read the full story here.
