'Islamist' Turkey Arrests Journalists, Others for ‘Armed Terror Organization’. (FreedomHouse).

In response to the detention of prominent journalists from the newspaper Zaman and Samanyolu Broadcasting Group on charges of establishing an armed terror organization, Freedom House issued the following statement:

The sweeping charges against the journalists and others detained today is a threat to free expression in Turkey and to anyone critical of its government,” said Daniel Calingaert, executive vice-president of Freedom House. “These arrests appear to be government retribution against journalists reporting on corruption and criticizing the government. The crackdown on speech in Turkey must end.”

Background:

On Dec. 14, 2014, Turkish police announced an investigation into 37 people associated with the movement of Islamic cleric Fethullah Gülen for allegedly establishing and managing an armed terror organization. Twenty-three have been detained, including prominent journalists.
