'Neo Ottoman Conqueror' Turkey to Deploy Over 2000 Soldiers to Iraq?

'Neo Ottoman Conqueror' Turkey to Deploy Over 2000 Soldiers to Iraq? (Al-Masdar)

Al-Masdar a few days ago reported that Turkey had violated Iraq’s territorial integrity by sending a few hundred troops to just north of ISIS’ de facto Iraq capital of Mosul.

It has now been reported in Turkish media circles that Erdogan is set to escalate the situation further by having in excess of 2000 soldiers from as little a couple hundred currently in Iraq.

Their role is supposedly to only train the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Sunni Arab militias fighting ISIS.

There has been no coordination with Baghdad who denounce Turkish military violations.

This could be in response to help bolster Peshmerga forces as Russia supports rival YPG forces in Syria.

This is a tense situation as Turkey two weeks shot down a Russian jet that had allegedly violated Turkish airspace for as little as 17 seconds. Hmmm......Or now that Russia is destroying Erdo's cheap oil he has decided to go for the Iraqi Kurd oil field.

Iraq: 'Neo Ottoman Conqueror' Turkey's troops near Mosul are violating international law".

Iraq: 'Neo Ottoman Conqueror' Turkey's troops near Mosul are violating international law". (Rudaw).

"The Iraqi authorities call on Turkey to... immediately withdraw from Iraqi territory," the statement said.

"We have confirmation that Turkish forces, numbering about one armoured regiment with a number of tanks and artillery, entered Iraqi territory... allegedly to train Iraqi groups, without a request or authorisation from Iraqi federal authorities," it said.

The deployment "is considered a serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty," it added.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - More than 100 Turkish troops entered Iraq's Mosul province on Thursday, reportedly with tanks and heavy weapons.

The Turkish troops are stationed in Zlekan and Bashik, towns in eastern Mosul province.

According to information obtained by Rudaw, 150 to 200 troops entered the province with 15 tanks, 8 small armors, 4 larger armors, 13 military vehicles, one ambulance, 7 lorries loaded with ammunition and bullets, and a water tanker.

Meanwhile, Ismat Rajab, an exiled Kurdistan Democratic Party official, confirmed to Rudaw Saturday that "before, there were Turkish advisers at the Bashik military base in Mosul, but now several other advisers with armed guards have been added."

When the Sunni volunteer group Hashd al-Wataniya was set up after the Islamic State took over Mosul, Turkish military advisers trained the forces based at the Bashik base.

Previously, Turkish military advisers have come to the Kurdistan region to arm the Peshmerga, and they opened Turkish bases in several areas of the Kurdistan region, including Soran and Bamerne in Erbil, as well as Raniya and Qalachwalan in Sulaimani. Hmmm..........All Islamist roads lead to oil.

Iraq demands 'Neo Ottoman conqueror' Turkey's troops withdraw from near Mosul.

Iraq demands 'Neo Ottoman conqueror' Turkey's troops withdraw from near Mosul. (BBC).

The Iraqi government has demanded that Turkey withdraw troops it sent to an area near the northern city of Mosul.

Iraq has not requested that any country send ground troops into its territory and will regard any such move as a “hostile act,” the country’s prime minister, Haider Al-Abadi, said in view of a US decision to deploy special forces in the country.

Iraq “will consider any country sending ground combat forces a hostile act and will deal with it on this basis,” Al-Abadi said in a statement published by the prime minister’s office on Thursday, adding that “the Iraqi government is committed to not allowing the presence of any ground force on the land of Iraq.”

“The Iraqi government confirms its firm and categorical rejection of any action of this kind issued by any country [that] violates our [Iraq’s] national sovereignty,”Al-Abadi also said in the statement.

Baghdad “did not request any side... to send ground forces to Iraq,” he added, thus refuting reports that the Iraqi government had called for deployment of foreign troops to help Iraqi forces fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS?ISIL).

Iraq does not need any foreign forces from any state or international coalition, it only needs weapons, ammunition and training from its partners and allies in the fight against IS, the prime minister’s statement says.

The move was "serious breach of Iraqi sovereignty" Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's office said in a statement.

About 150 Turkish soldiers have been deployed near in the town of Bashiqa to train Iraqi Kurdish forces, earlier reports said.

Mosul has been under the control of the Islamic State (IS) group since last year.

according to two US defense officials quoted by Reuters, Turkey’s deployment is not part of the efforts of the US-led coalition battling Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

On Friday, 130 Turkish soldiers equipped with heavy weapons were deployed at a military base on the outskirts of the city of Mosul, which is currently held by IS, according to the Daily Sabah newspaper.

According to Cumhuriyet newspaper, the number of the deployed Turkish troops amounts to at least 150.

The town of Bashiqa is located about 10 kilometers northeast of Mosul. The statement called on Turkey to "respect good neighbourly relations and to withdraw immediately from the Iraqi territory".
