The Mossad, Israel's foreign intelligence agency, has reportedly assassinated a Hamas militant operating out of Tunisia, according to Channel 10 citing Arab media.

The target, Mohhamed Alzoari, known to Israel's security echelon as "The Engineer," was found shot to death inside his vehicle in the city of Sfax, local media reported.

Five suspects were later detained by Tunisian authorities, along with multiple vehicles, weapons and mobile devices. One Tunisian journalist said the killing was carried out by the Mossad, who had been following Zawari for some time, Channel 10 added.

Zawari, an aviation engineer and scientist, was shot three to seven times by unknown assailants in his car near his home.

The US has targeted one of the Isis leaders behind the terrorist attack that killed 30 British holidaymakers in Tunisia in a series of air strikes.

There has been no confirmation of the death of Noureddine Chouchane but he was believed to be at a camp in the group’s territories in neighbouring Libya that was struck early this morning.

An official told the New York Times that American fighter jets hit the stronghold near Sabratha, west of Tripoli, and killed dozens of Isis recruits.


Chouchane had been linked to June’s hotel attack in Sousse, which killed 38 people, and the massacre that killed 22 people at the Bardo National Museum in Tunis. Read the full story here.

The suspects were transferred to the national anti-terrorism unit.

During a security campaign conducted in the region, 34 wanted individuals were arrested in common law cases (theft, drug consumption and trafficking) and 33 were placed in custody for the needs of investigation.

After several raids and searches conducted by security units in Medenine, 15 individuals belonging and suspected of belonging to a terrorist group were arrested, a security official in the governorate said.

This seemed amusing at first, but has taken a sinister turn. One of the girls who posed with naked breasts for the photos on the site, 19-year-old Amina Tyler, has gone missing.

"We fear for her life", write the feminist activists on their Facebook page. The French Femen activists "have tried to contact the young Tunisian, but without success. Her telephone has been switched off." The essayist Caroline Fourest, too, expresses her fears on her Facebook page, discussing the possibility that the young woman had been taken by members of her family. "Someone said they had seen Amina, apparently being taken by her father and her brother, in the course of being interned....", reports the journalist, basing this particularly on a video that she has published on her page.

Live TV ‘coffin call’ raises concerns over jihad in Tunisia.(AA).Tunisian viewers were taken shocked when a Salafi cleric called upon Muslim youths to carry out jihadist acts against the government in a live TV show this week. Tunisian analysts warned of the consequences of a growing militant discourse that has prevailed after the revolution.

Nasr al-Din al-Alawi, a Salafi cleric and imam, was shown in a TV interview (in the presence of Interior Minister Ali Larayed) brandishing a white cloth, used to represent a coffin, as a sign that he is willing to sacrifice his life. He then called upon Salafi youths in Tunisia to do the same and to declare jihad against the ruling al-Nahda party and the minister, who is also a member of the party. 

Tunisian experts found the incident alarming and launched an initiative in the weekly Assabah newspaper, which called upon al-Nahda to choose between what they termed “the coffin campaign” and the promotion of freedom and progress.
They lashed out at the ruling party for its attempts to woo the ultra-conservative Islamists and warned of the grave consequences of overlooking actions that incite violence like Alawi’s.
Political analyst Salah al-Din al-Jurshi argued that all al-Nahda’s attempts at winning the Salafis to their side have failed. “Salafis view al-Nahda as their enemy now and the coffin incident proves that they might think of escalation against the party and the troika government and which for them have lost their legitimacy,” he wrote.
Jurshi added that despite initiatives by several more moderate Salafi clerics to diffuse the tension between Salafis and the government, clashes are still likely to happen in the coming stage. “This is because the Salafi discourse has not really changed,” he said. Regarding the application of a law that entitles security forces to shoot at Salafi in case of violations, Jurshi said that while the law itself seems capable of restoring stability, violence has proven an inadequate way of solving such problems even if it is perpetrated by a legitimate government.
Professor of history and expert on Islamic studies Aliya al-Alani found confrontations between Salafis and the government unlikely to take place in the near future. “After the coffin incident, many Salafis, as well as members of al-Nahda, hurried to mediate between Salafi zealots and the government because they think any confrontation will serve the interests of the seculars.” Alani agrees with Jurshi as far as al-Nahda’s inability to contain the Salafi threat is concerned. “If al-Nahda was capable of convincing the Salafis to tone down their rhetoric and renounce violence, why didn’t it do that several months ago when several politicians and intellectuals were subjected to attacks by Salafis?” However, Alani argued that those attacks proved that Salafis are not as dangerous as they might appear to be because their numbers are much less than what is reported in the media. “They are only a few hundreds, nothing more.”Read the full story here.

• WikiLeaks: FBI hunts the 9/11 gang that got away.The FBI has launched a manhunt for a previously unknown team of men suspected to be part of the 9/11 attacks, the Daily Telegraph can disclose.Secret documents reveal that the three Qatari men conducted surveillance on the targets, provided “support” to the plotters and had tickets for a flight to Washington on the eve of the atrocities. The suspected terrorists flew from London to New York on a British Airways flight three weeks before the attacks. They allegedly carried out surveillance at the World Trade Centre, the White House and in Virginia, the US state where the Pentagon and CIA headquarters are located. Ten days later they flew to Los Angeles, where they stationed themselves in a hotel near the airport which the FBI has now established was paid for by a “convicted terrorist”, who also paid for their airline tickets. Hotel staff have told investigators they saw pilot uniforms in their room along with computer print outs detailing pilot names, flight numbers and times and packages addressed to Syria, Afghanistan, Jerusalem and Jordan.On September 10 they were booked on an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Washington, but failed to board. The following day the same Boeing 757 aircraft was hijacked by five terrorists and crashed into the Pentagon. But, instead of boarding the American flight, the Qatari suspects – named as Meshal Alhajri, Fahad Abdulla and Ali Alfehaid - flew back to London on a British Airways flight before returning to Qatar. There are some big differences, too, but for the moment let’s just look at some parallels and try to draw some necessarily tentative conclusions. After all, everything is up for grabs right now and things will probably change a lot in the next few hours and days.First of all is prostate cancer. The shah was dying of it and Mubarak is afflicted with it. We know Mubarak’s got it. We didn’t know the shah had it. One of the effects of the disease and its treatment seems to be that the person has difficulty making tough decisions, and it inevitably forces him to think about his legacy. The shah didn’t want to go down as a bloody dictator, and he rejected all appeals from his generals to open fire on the demonstrators. This encouraged the opposition and discouraged the military commanders.Second is the role of Washington. Carter did not know what to do, and he was operating on the basis of very bad intelligence. Above all, he (thanks to his CIA) had very little good information about Khomeini.I don’t know the quality of our intelligence on the Egyptian opposition, but if former Ambassador Martin Indyk is correct (and all I’ve got to go on is a Tweet saying he said it on BBC Arabic), the White House and State Department may be signaling approval of Mohammed al-Baradei. According to Al Jazeera — a very unreliable source to put it mildly — Obama has told leaders in the Gulf that the United States favors a “peaceful transition” to greater democracy.Well, so do I. But Baradei is one of the last men I would choose for that role. He doesn’t like America and he’s in cahoots with Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood. He would be likely to try to replay the ghastly catastrophe of 1979. Bad for freedom, bad for the Egyptian people, bad for America. Does our intelligence community not know this? And if they do, why is Obama tilting towards this outcome? If he is, that is…So even if our intelligence is weak, we still have to make decisions, and the basic rule has to be the same as Hippocrates’ injunction to doctors: don’t make things worse. Don’t inflict an even worse tyranny on the Egyptian people, one that is likely to plunge the region into a big war. If that means working with the generals to create a transition government that promises to shape a more attractive polity, so be it. The lesser of two evils is a legitimate policy decision.In fact, it’s the most common one. I’m sure Obama hates being in this position, as any of us would. But he’s got to make decisions. Clearly and emphatically. And stay on top of it, which is not at all his style or inclination.And that’s the final similarity with 1979: the wrong American in the wrong job at a crucial time. Throughout Illinois and across the United States, the Muslim Brotherhood is growing in its strength and numbers under the current administration of Barack Hussein Obama.This international conference in Chicago has received virtually no attention by the main stream media in the United States. WHY?The Muslim Brotherhood is an international terrorist organization. Hal Wick, the bill has no chance of passage.
