• Hospital: Rep. Giffords expected to recover from Tucson shooting that killed six including a child and federal judge.Tucson - The surgeon who operated on Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords said he was "optimistic" she would recover from being shot in the head by a man with a semi-automatic weapon outside a grocery store.Six others at the congressional outreach event did not. Federal law enforcement sources said that John M. Roll, the senior U.S. District judge in Arizona, was shot and killed in the incident. The Pima County Sheriff's office said that five others including a nine-year-old child had died, and a total of 18 people were injured. In brief public remarks, President Obama said he had dispatched F.B.I. director Robert Mueller to the scene. A 22-year old man was taken into custody after being tackled by people in the small crowd after the shooting. One pistol was recovered and it had what police described as "an extended clip." The man was identified as Jared Loughner, who appears to have left a trail of Internet postings, including some that express convoluted observations about government. Law enforcement officials said they believed he was a military veteran. Giffords, who in November narrowly won reelection to a third term, was hosting her first "Congress on Your Corner" event when a gunman ran up and began shooting her and others in her entourage with a Glock handgun, according to law enforcement sources. Eyewitness Steven Rayle, a Tucson doctor, said he saw a young man wearing sneakers and what appeared to be navy blue sweats approach Gifford with a semi-automatic handgun raised. The man shot Giffords once in the face, he said. After Giffords fell, he said, a number of people near Giffords sought to flee but were trapped--hemmed in by the table and a concrete post. • Gabrielle Giffords shooting in Tucson: Did it stem from state of political discourse?Trent Humphries was headed to the local Safeway for some milk when he was stopped by a police barricade. It wasn't until later that he would find out that a congresswoman with whom he had often clashed politically had been shot there, along with more than a dozen others. A neighbor was among the dead. "We were sickened," recalled Humphries, an organizer with the Tucson Tea Party. "Obviously, we do not condone violence. We've had dozens and dozens of events and we've never had violence. Whoever did this, they're not grounded in political thought. I would be very surprised if it was someone who had ever come to our meetings."After the suspected shooter's name was released, Humphries said he checked the 4,000-person Tucson Tea Party contact list and found no one by the name of Jared Loughner. Across Arizona, conservative and tea party activists expressed shock and dismay at the events that unfolded in the grocery store parking lot in Tucson. Though little was known about the alleged shooter Saturday afternoon, questions inevitably arose about his politics. Some Arizona tea party activists, like Humphries, said it was unfair to connect the politics of a large and mostly peaceful movement to the actions of a single criminal. The day's events led others to question the environment fostered by some of the more confrontational members of their movement. "You have to be very careful what you say. We live in a very polarized environment here in the United States, and while I do believe in the second amendment, no one should be referring to second amendment solutions," said Patrick Beck, president of the Mohave County Tea Party in the northern part of the state.When asked about the Palin target map, Beck said: "I don't know. It's really easy in the context of what happened this morning to look back and say, I don't know if this was such a bright idea. At the same time, there are other politicians from the other side of the political spectrum who have said similar military-style sayings. Do I really believe they are intending harm on people? No."

He applied to join the military but was rejected, probably because of his previous encounters with law enforcement, arrests for drugs and more, and/or his psychiatric history. • Second suspect sought in Arizona shooting spree.Authorities are searching for a second suspect they describe as a “person of interest” in the shooting incident in Tucson, Arizona that critically injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six others. The man is described as an adult Caucasian male, between 40 and 50 years-old, with dark hair, His picture is shown in a security camera image at left.Police are not providing specific details of the possible role this man might have had in the shooting spree, although a law enforcement source close to the investigation told this author that the man might have had prior knowledge of the plans of the primary suspect, Jared Lee LOUGHNER.The as-yet unidentified male was last seen wearing blue jeans and a dark blue jacket.The victims who lost their lives have been identified as John ROLL, 63, a federal judge who happened to be in the vicinity of the shooting, nine-(9)-year-old Christina GREENE, Phyllis SCHNECK, 79, Dorothy MURRAY, 76, Dorwin STODDARD, 76, and 30-year-old Gabriel ZIMMERMAN.In addition to Rep. Six years ago he was the patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church in the Holy Land. Gaby Ashkenazi and the IDF General Staff at their meeting yesterday (Thursday), 6.1.11.The decision will enable the number of draftees from the ultra-orthodox sector to double over the next five years. It is expected that the number of draftees will reach 4,800 by 2015 (2,400 for military service and 2,400 for civic service). It was also agreed that the IDF would create additional combat frameworks in order to absorb the ultra-orthodox. • Pakistan bows to opposition demands on fuel price.Pakistan’s prime minister has agreed to reverse an unpopular fuel price hike under pressure from opposition parties, as he seeks to save his govt following the defection of a key coalition partner.The United States called the decision a “mistake” and the International Monetary Fund, which has an $11 billion loan program with the nuclear armed nation that depends partly on it making painful economic reforms, also voiced misgivings. The decision — which a Pakistani official said could cost the government $58 million a month — along with delays in a planned tax reform could make Pakistan miss its budget targets and endanger remaining payments from the IMF loan. “All the political leadership has agreed that fuel prices should be reversed,” Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani told the National Assembly on Thursday. “I announce a restoration of the prices” to the levels they were on Dec. 31. The rollback of the 9 percent price increase, which took effect on Friday, was one of several demands made of Gilani’s Pakistan People’s Party by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N). • Turkey - PM Erdogan calls Peace monument in Kars ‘abomination’, announces demolition.Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Saturday called a monument in Kars “an abomination” and announced it will not stay up much longer.During his visit to the northeastern province of Kars over the weekend, Erdoğan mentioned the city’s “İnsanlık Anıtı,” or Monument of Humanity, in a speech to locals. He said, “They have placed an abomination next to the Mausoleum of Hasan Harakani [a religious figure from the 10th century]; they erected a strange thing.” Erdoğan called the monument’s existence next to the historic monuments in the area “unthinkable” and said he hopes to not to see it there next time he visits Kars. “Our mayor will do his duty with haste,” Erdoğan assured the residents of Kars. According to the prime minister, the area will be turned into “a beautiful park” by the municipality.Current Mayor Nevzat Bozkuş, from the leading Justice and Development Party, or AKP, stated the monument is on Treasury land, which is also a protected area, and has no zoning permit. Former Mayor Alibeyoğlu, speaking to news television station NTV via phone, said the public will evaluate the “abomination” comment. Bozkuş said the monument was erected as an answer to a “genocide monument” in Armenia and in the name of peace.Sculptor Mehmet Aksoy had said in January, 2010, that the mayor wanted a monument of peace, as opposed to other monuments with messages of war and hatred. “War is a crime against humanity and people cannot progress forward with wars,” Aksoy said. “These two figures in the sculpture are actually a single human torn in half. • HT:IndiaToday.Chinese troops enter Indian territory again; stop work of construction firm.After remaining peaceful for most of the year, Chinese troops entered Indian territory in the fag end of 2010 along the Line of Actual Control in South-eastern Ladakh region and threatened a contractor and his team to halt work on constructing a "passenger shed".The Chinese troops, which included motor-cycle borne personnel of People's Liberation Army (PLA), entered Gombir area in Demchok region in Jammu and Kashmir and threatened the civilian workers who were building the shed, the plan for which was cleared by the state rural development department, according to details accessed by PTI.The incident took place in September-October last year in a village about 300-kms south-east of Leh district headquarters.An official report, which was prepared after a meeting of officials from civilian administration, army, central security agencies and Indo-Tibetan Border Police, stated that a passenger shed was approved at an estimated cost of Rs two lakh to be built at 'T' point in village Gombir under the Border Area Development Project of Ministry of Home Affairs.The Chinese army -- PLA -- came to the 'T' point and asked the contractor to stop the work, the report said. An official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the arrival of Chinese troops, some of whom were ironically on motorcycle, triggered panic among the workers who rushed to the nearby Army post for help.The Chinese troops also shouted some slogans which could not be translated by the officials, the official said.In 2009, the Chinese Army haD violated the International Border in Ladakh region and painted boulders and rocks in the area red.The Chinese troops had entered nearly 1.5 kilometres into the Indian territory on July 31 near Mount Gya, recognised as International border by India and China, and painted the boulders and rocks with "China" and "Chin9" in red spray paint.The 22,420 ft Mount Gya, also known as "fair princess of snow" by Army, is located at the tri-junction of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, and Tibet. Its boundary was marked during the British era and regarded as International border by the two countries.Before this, Chinese helicopters had violated the Indian air space on June 21 along the Line of Actual Control in Chumar region and also helli-dropped some expired food."They (Chinese) have threatened the nomadic people who had been using Dokbug area (in Ladakh sector) area for grazing since decades long, in a way to snatch our land in inches. The number of rape cases in the city increased in 2010 over the previous year. In 2009 there were 459 cases of rape reported across the city, while in 2010 the figure was 489. This roughly translates to one rape case every 18 hours.The cases of molestation of women have also increased in 2010. While there were 528 cases of molestation in 2009, such cases went up to 585 in 2010 - or once every 14 hours.A staggering 56 per cent accused in rape cases were below the age of 25. • HT:Memri.Iranian Authorities Remove Sign from Esther and Mordechai Tomb in Hamadan.The Iranian authorities have removed the sign from the tomb of Esther and Mordechai in the city of Hamadan, which identified the building as a recognized holy site. The Iranian news agency Fars stated that Iran ignored Esther and Mordechai's responsibility for the slaughter of 75 thousand Iranians, adding that the Jews celebrated this event on their festival of Purim, which they also called "Festival of the Massacre of the Iranians."
