"CHANGE" - First Commercial Flight in 34 Years Leaves Cairo for Tehran.(UOI). The first commercial flight to Iran from Egypt in 34 years ago took off from the Cairo airport en route to Tehran today. The Air Memphis Flight 8000, chartered by Egyptian businessman Ramy Lakah, carried eight passengers, including two Iranian diplomats. The flight launched the new air link between Egypt and Iran.
Air Memphis will operate charter flights to Iran from regional airports in Aswan, Luxor and Abu Simbel in southern Egypt. No further information on the frequency of the flights and the destination cities in Iran was released. (Egypt Independent, 30 March)
Egypt and Iran cut diplomatic relations in 1979. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi visited Iran last August to attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement. In February, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also visited Cairo.
The Air Memphis chartered flight has returned from Tehran and landed Saturday evening at Aswan airport with 50 Iranian tourists on board.
Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, has set off for the Egyptian capital, Cairo, for talks over regional and international issues, including the ongoing crisis in Syria, Press TV reports.
In his one-day visit, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will meet with the UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.
During his talks with Brahimi, the Iranian diplomat is to reaffirm the Islamic Republic's support for a political solution to the foreign-sponsored violence that broke out in Syria in March 2011.
Iran severed diplomatic ties with Egypt following the Islamic Revolution of 1979 after Egypt signed the Camp David Accord with the Israeli regime and offered asylum to former Iranian dictator, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
Relations between Tehran and Cairo began to thaw after the election of President Mohamed Morsi in Egypt, who assumed office last year after the Western-backed regime of the Egyptian dictator, Hosni Mubarak, was toppled in 2011.Read the full story here.
