Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi: 'the deal was not legally binding.'

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi: 'the deal was not legally binding.'HT: UskowiOnIran.

Envoys of Iran and six world powers will meet next week to start working out steps to implement the Geneva agreement on Iranian nuclear program, Fars News Agency, quoting Iranian deputy foreign minister, reported today. The meeting’s venue will be either Geneva or Vienna. (Fars/Reuters, 1 December)

The 24 November agreement has also called for creation of an adhoc commission to monitor the implementation of the agreement. The commission will be set up during the upcoming meeting.

Meanwhile, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, echoing years of mistrust between the two sides, said in a TV interview in Tehran today that the deal was not legally binding. He added that Iran had the right to undo it if the powers failed to hold up their end of the bargain. (Fars/Reuters, 1 December)

It is very difficult for Iran not to implement any parts of the agreement that was signed by Russia and China, with the West desiring its implementation. Araqchi’s comments were probably for domestic consumption.

Iran’s envoy to the UN nuclear watchdog agency had said on Friday that the implementation phase of the agreement was expected to start by early January.
