Democracy and rule of law 'all but gone' In 'Islamist' Turkey. (Bugun).
The expected detainment of hundreds of journalists was met with rage as lawyers and unions express that Turkey’s democratic and legal developments are being scraped.
Public outcry continues to pour out amidst the expected detainment of hundreds of journalists from media groups which notably reported on 2013 dated December 17-25 corruption probes which levied charges against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). Critics ranging from lawyers to unions are in protest over the government’s ‘authoritarian policies’ which are viewed to be a cover-up. Notably the case was dropped in mid-October.
Reporters without Borders’ Eastern Europe and Middle East representative Johanna Bihr shared the widely echoed view that the expected wave of arrests must be a government agenda to cover up the December 17-25 probe and the corruption charges, and highlighted “This is a continuation of the oppression against journalists who have reported on the corruption scandal.”
Critics have slammed that the government for the persecution of members of the police force and judiciary which conducted the probe. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) had responded by framing the probe as a coup against the government perpetrated ‘by a parallel’ ‘state-within the state’
Lawyer Ergin Cinmen echoed the view, expressing “A more concerning fact is that the operation is expected to target columnists and journalists. This will demolish freedom of expression, and bring about self-imposed media oppression.” According to Bihr 15 journalists have been investigated for reporting on corruption in the last month.
`During the reign of the AK Party Turkey has moved down to 154th place in the press freedoms index…Our nation is now viewed with third-world countries, in a show of mentality that is pushing the country into the league of tyrants,” expressed Lawyer Mehmet Kasap, Law and Life Association President.
Lawyers express that the recent infringements of the AK Party have all but wiped out Turkey’s progress in the past 12 years, even since the foundation of the Republic in 1923. Speaking on the reasonable doubt clause Lawyer Erdoğan Günal noted “investigations conducted without proper evidence will raise questions on human rights.”
The government has silenced investigations against the four ex-ministers and high-level public officials.“ Kadir Akbaş adds “The same system which gives a pass to ‘certain individuals,' exploiting the law in a manner which could bring allegations or arrests against the innocent.”
