Turkey - New presidential palace to have special 'Praetorian guard' on duty. (Bugun).

Defense Minister İsmet Yıldız stated that the presidential palace known as White Palace will be guarded by a special commando force, Hürriyet daily reported.

The Defense Minister’s statement came after CHP deputy Vahap Seçer question on whether the presidential guard regiment in Çankaya will be transferred new presidential palace or not.

Yılmaz expressed that to provide the safety of new presidential residence a new 'Commando Unit' has been established. He added that new unit will be under command of Presidential Guard Regiment Commander.

According to Hürriyet newspaper, the existing presidential guard regiment will not be dissolved. Only on special occasions like welcoming some important world leaders, they will be transferred to new presidential palace.

The Presidential Guard Regiment (Turkish: Cumhurbaşkanlığı Muhafız Alayı) was first formed in 1920 to provide protection for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The regiment includes well-trained officers from the land, air and navy forces and it now operates under the General Staff.
