Two Iranian warships have headed to international waters on a mission that includes sailing in the waters off the southern coasts of Yemen.

Iranian navy dispatched its 44th fleet, comprised of Alvand destroyer and Bushehr logistic warship to the Gulf of Aden and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Tasnim news agency reported Oct. 13.

The report added that the move is aimed at safeguarding the country’s trade vessels sailing in the international waters against pirates.

According to the report, the fleet is expected to reach the waters near Somalia and Tanzania through the Indian Ocean.

Earlier this week, a US destroyer launched three missiles against Houthi held territories in Yemen destroying three radar control facilities.


The Pentagon later announced that the missiles were launched in self-defense.

The Iranian Navy plans to deploy warships in the Atlantic Ocean, a senior Iranian commander announced on Tuesday.

“The previous flotillas of warships were sent to the Mediterranean Sea and passed the Suez Channel and even sailed through the Pacific Ocean and the China Sea,” Commander of the Navy’s Fourth Naval Zone Admiral Afshin Rezayee told FNA on Tuesday.

“Now we intend to enter the Atlantic Ocean and this will be materialized after dispatch of the next flotillas of warships,” he added.

Noting that each flotilla of warships is sent to the international waters for a three-month-long period, Rezayee said at present Iran’s 29th flotilla of warships is ready to be dispatched for a new mission.

He added that the new flotilla will include two logistic and combat warships as well as one subsurface vessel.

In relevant remarks last month, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said that Iran plans to dispatch its next flotilla of warships to the high seas in early 2014 to protect the country’s cargo ships and oil tankers against pirate attacks.

“The Navy’s next flotilla will be dispatched to either the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic on January 21-Feb 20,” he said.

He underlined that the Navy’s flotilla will pass through the Mediterranean Sea to reach the Atlantic Ocean.

The Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008, when Somali raiders hijacked the Iranian-chartered cargo ship, MV Delight, off the coast of Yemen.

According to UN Security Council resolutions, different countries can send their warships to the Gulf of Aden and coastal waters of Somalia against the pirates and even with prior notice to Somali government enter the territorial waters of that country in pursuit of Somali sea pirates.

The Gulf of Aden - which links the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea - is an important energy corridor, particularly because Persian Gulf oil is shipped to the West via the Suez Canal.

Deputy Commander of Russia’s Caspian Flotilla Nikolai Yakubovsky announced the news after a Friday meeting with the commander of Iran’s naval fleet that has been dispatched to the Russian port city of Astrakhan, RIA Novosti reported.

In 2009, the two countries conducted their first joint naval maneuvers in the Caspian Sea, involving about 30 vessels.

Iran has dispatched two indigenously-built missile-launching warships to Astrakhan in a move to consolidate friendly relations between Tehran and Moscow.

During the Iranian naval fleet’s stay at Astrakhan Port, the Iranian naval officers will visit some military and port facilities in Russia and hold meetings with a number of high-ranking Russian commanders and officials.

On April 21, a group of Russian Navy warships docked at the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas after a long journey from the Pacific Ocean.

The fleet, which comprised Admiral Panteleyev anti-submarine destroyer and the logistic battleships Peresvet and Admiral Nevelskoi vessel with a crew of 712, entered the Iranian naval zone in a bid to further strengthen relations between Tehran and Moscow and promote bilateral naval cooperation to maintain maritime security.

In recent years, Iran’s Navy has been increasing its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.

(RT).President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was present at the launch of theJamaran-2 destroyer in the port city of Anali, 250 kilometers northwest of the country’s capital. During the ceremony, the leader hailed the construction of the destroyer as a “great achievement” for the Islamic republic, Xinhua news agency reported.

The 1,420-ton destroyer is equipped with a 20,000-horsepower engine and can travel at a top speed of 30 knots, and has the capability to carry helicopters, different surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, advanced artillery and torpedo systems,Press TV reported.

Jamaran-2 is set to officially join the Iranian navy's fleet withinthe next six months, following the completion of final testing.

The move will mark the first heavyweight Iranian military presencein the oil-rich Caspian Sea. The five surrounding countries – Iran,Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan – have not reached an agreement on exploitation of its resources.

Tehran wants all five nations to share the sea's resources equally.However, the other four nations support exploitation through mutual pacts, putting Iran's share at about 12 percent.

During the meeting in China's Southern Zhangjigang port on Tuesday, the Iranian and Chinese navy commanders explored venues for the enhancement of mutual military cooperation in a bid to maintain and reinforce security in regional waters.

Also at the meeting, Commander of the Iranian Navy fleet Omid Golestaneh conveyed a message by Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari to the commander of China's Southern fleet to pay a visit to Iran.

The Iranian commander and his accompanying delegation also visited warships of China's Southern fleet.
The visit of the Iranian naval fleet takes place at the official invitation of the Chinese navy. More than 200 students of Imam Khomeini Naval University are accompanying the Navy's 24th fleet.
On Monday, the Iranian Navy's 24th flotilla of warships docked in China's Southern port city of Zhangjigang on Monday as part of its mission to convey Iran's message of peace and friendship to the East Asian states.

Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Navy for Operations Admiral Siyavash Jarreh announced that the Navy's 24th fleet of warship, comprised of Khark chopper carrier and Sabalan destroyer, docked in Zhangjigang after a 13,000-kilometer voyage in 40 days.The commander said that during its voyage the Iranian warships traced and detected 1,180 trade and oil vessels and monitored the moves of over 120 military units with the help of their optical and electronic equipment.

He added that the visit was aimed at consolidating Iran's relations with China and conveying a message of peace and friendship to Beijing and other regional states.Late in February, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari announced that Iranian warships will dock in Sri Lanka's capital city of Colombo on its way back home from a mission in Southeast Asia. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a conference on the development of Iran's Southeastern coasts of Makran today, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said the country will launch the second home-made Mowdge class destroyer, dubbed as 'Jamaran 2', in the near future.
He added that a new type of flying boat will be unveiled in the next few months.
Speaking to FNA in June, Lieutenant Commander of the Navy for Technical Affairs Rear Admiral Abbas Zamini reminded that the designing and building of Jamaran destroyer, a Mowdge 1 Class vessel, showed Iran's high technical know-how and capabilities in manufacturing battleships, and added that the country is already manufacturing a second generation of the hi-tech vessel.
The construction phase of Velayat destroyer, a Mowdge 2 Class vessel, is 70% through, he said, and added that the vessel is under construction in Iran's Northern port city of Bandar Anzali.
The admiral declared that Velayat will be launched this Iranian year (ends on March 2013).
Iran's first home-made destroyer, Jamaran, was launched in late February 2010. The Mowdge Class vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tons and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities and is armed with a variety of anti-ship, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.

Iranian Fleet of Warships to Cross Strait of Malacca. (Fars).Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said a fleet of Iranian warships is moving towards Southeast Asia to pass through the Strait of Malacca.
The Strait of Malacca is a narrow, 805 km stretch of water between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
The Navy commander told the Islamic Republic news agency that Iranian warships have already started their voyage to the East of the Indian Ocean, and will likely dock in Sri Lanka, India or China.
"This fleet of warship will definitely traverse through the Strait of Malacca in the very Eastern point of the Indian Ocean and will then return to Iran," Sayyari noted.
Meantime, the commander rejected the speculations about joint military exercises with China, stressing that such drills are not on the agenda of the Iranian Navy.
In December 2012, Sayyari had said that the Iranian Navy has been able to successfully expand its operational zone to the Northern waters of the Indian Ocean and is now operating in a vast area.
"Stretching the Navy's operational range from a small limited zone to the northern waters of the Indian Ocean and an area of 2,000,100 square kilometers was another golden page in the history of the Navy's glories," he said at the time.
