My Grandmother has a failsafe method for determining a man’s Jewishness. She stares at him. She claims every Jewish man is adorned with an invisible yarmulke on his head and an equally invisible Tallit hanging from his shoulders. She claims these adornments are clearly visible; one only has to look carefully.With one long crooked finger she will knight thee, “Jewish,”  loudly and confidently. There will be no need to confirm this on Google, Grandma is always correct.

Imagine my surprise, when Senator John Kerry, the controversial Vietnam veteran turned President Obama’s Secretary of State, came into Grandma’s line of fire. As her finger pointed to John Kerry’s image on the TV screen. “Jewish,” she said.
“The Irish Catholic Massachusetts Senator?” I said in disbelief.
“Jewish,” she insisted. “Jewish blood. It will be good for Israel,” she added.
I wasn’t so sure about either of those predictions.
Here’s what Grandma saw - after I did Google it:

Benedikt Kohn (John Kerry’s Great-Grandfather)

According to the records I was able to find, John Kerry’s Great-Grandfather was a man named Benedikt Kohn, who lived in southern Moravia. He married Mathilde Frankel. They lived in a town called Bennisch, which boasted a population of 4200, 27 of whom were Jewish.
Benedikt Kohn died in 1870; Mathilde moved to Vienna with her three children, one of whom was Fritz, who would become John Kerry’s grandfather.

John Kerry’s Grandfather Fritz suffered through a growing anti-Semitism that prevaied in Europe at the time. Fritz and his brother Otto decided to abandon their Jewish heritage and converted to Catholicism. Otto dropped a pencil on a map and it landed on the Ireland County of Kerry and so, both brothers took the name of Kerry, dropping the name Kohn.

Fritz became known as Fred. Fred married Ida Loewe, a Jewish musician from Budapest.  Ida was a descendant of Sinai Loew, a brother of Rabbi Judah Loew, the famous Kabbalist, known as the “Maharal of Prague,” believed to have invented the Golem. Two of Ida’s siblings were killed in Nazi concentration camps.
Fred (Fritz) immigrated to America through Ellis Island in 1905. They had three sons who were all baptized as Catholics. They kept their Jewish roots a secret.

In 1921, Fritz Kohn (John Kerry’s Grandfather), shot himself in the head in a Boston hotel; he was 48 years old. There were whispers that the transition from Czechoslovakian Jew to American Catholic was too great a burden for him to bear any longer.

John Kerry’s father Richard was six years old when his father committed suicide. He went on to marry Rosemary Forbes, the beneficiary of the Forbes family trusts. John is one of four children. His younger brother Cameron married a Jewish woman and personally converted to Judaism in 1983.
It’s a lot to swallow; but not unlike the family histories of many Americans. And so now John Kerry (Kohn) finds himself at a powerful crossroads.

Which John Kerry Kohn will Israel meet?

Every 4 years or so, Israel must suffer the consequences of the American Presidential election. The question is raised each time: What should America do about Israel?
If you’re on the Palestinian/anti-Israel side, you’ve established a precedent called prisoner release. In exchange for only a promise of coming to the table to talk, hundreds of vicious murderers will be freed from prison; if you’re waiting for the punch line I must disappoint you as this is not dark comedy, only dark reality.
This is one way to break prisoners out of jail without much effort, if you only have to agree to talk just divide the amount of meetings according to the number of prisoners and they will all be home for dinner eventually.
When a new US Secretary of State is appointed, Middle East Peace Talks are all the buzz. The newly appointed secretary is certain that this time he or she will be the difference maker. We’ve heard it many times before. It always results in Israel relinquishing land, releasing criminals, or both, without any benefit in return; the returns are dire.
Israel does this for what, a pat on the head from the US? Israel does not need a pat on the head from the US.
This time however, it is truly special, Israel has the chance to get so much more than just a pat on the head from the US; Israel has the chance to be betrayed by a Kohn.

Some troubling milestones in John Kerry’s record on Israel and the Middle East:

■December 2012: Kerry was one of only 26 senators not to sign a letter urging President Obama to reiterate his readiness to use military force against Iran if all other measures fail to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapons capacity.

■September 2012: Kerry was one of only 25 senators who refused to sign a letter urging the European Union to designate Hizballah as a terrorist organization.

■June 2012: Kerry was one of only 13 senators who refused to sign a letter supporting Israel’s right to self-defense and affirming the legality of Israel’s naval blockage of Hamas-controlled Gaza, following the 2010 Gaza flotilla incident.

■2011: Kerry, in the words of a recent editorial in the Washington Post, “pushed the more cautious Mr. Obama toward … the endorsement of Hosni Mubarak’s departure from the Egyptian presidency,” a ruinous policy which has resulted in the Islamist, extremist Muslim Brotherhood taking control of Egypt, formerly America’s most important ally in the Arab world and against which the ZOA warned against at the time. The same editorial notes that “Mr. Kerry shares one of Mr. Obama’s greatest weaknesses: an excessive faith in the potential benefits of ‘engagement’ with rogue regimes and dictators. In particular, Mr. Kerry’s repeated attempts to foster a dialogue with Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad offers a case study of how such diplomacy can go wrong.”

■April 2010: Kerry again met with Syrian dictator Assad and called Syria “an essential player in bringing peace and stability to the region.” A few months later, the Assad regime embarked on its campaign, still in progress, of killing thousands of unarmed civilians in its bid to remain in power.

■April 2010: Kerry was one of only 13 senators who refused to sign a letter stressing the need for “direct, face-to-face negotiations without preconditions on either side” for Israelis and Palestinians and affirming the “unbreakable bonds that tie the United States and Israel together.”

■April 2010: Kerry was one of only 19 senators who refused to sign a letter calling for imposing crippling sanctions upon Iran.

■August 2009: Kerry was one of 29 senators who refused to sign a letter supporting President Obama’s call for Arab states to normalize relations with Israel.

■January 2009: During a visit to the Middle East, speaking of Syria’s role in the region, Kerry said nothing about the Assad regime’s barbaric history of state-sponsored terrorism, or its role in permitting terrorism to enter Iraq from Syria to kill U.S. servicemen after the overthrown of Saddam Hussein, or its role in the assassination of Lebanon’s Rafik Hariri, but instead criticized the policy of former President George W. Bush, saying, “Unlike the Bush administration that believed you could simply tell people what to do and walk away and wait for them to do it, we believe you have to engage in a discussion … we are going to renew diplomacy [with Damascus] but without any illusion, without any naivety, without any misplaced belief that, just by talking, things will automatically happen.”

■March 2007: Kerry was one of only 21 senators not to sign a letter requesting “no direct aid and no contacts with any members of a Palestinian Authority that does not explicitly and unequivocally recognize Israel’s right to exist, renounce terror, and accept previous agreements.”

■December 2003: When running for President, in a speech to the Council of Foreign Relations in New York, Kerry said he would appoint as presidential ambassador to the peace process former someone like Secretary of State James Baker or former President Jimmy Carter - both men distinguished by their public and long-standing animosity towards Israel. (New York Post, December 4, 2003).

■October 2003: Kerry, addressing an Arab American Institute conference in Dearborn, Michigan Kerry condemned Israel’s security barrier, which has been credited with stopping a portion of Palestinian terrorist attacks, saying “We do not need another barrier to peace” (Jewish Telegraphic Agency, February 4, 2004).

■1993: Kerry was one of 45 senators who refused to sign the Grassley/Lautenberg letter urging then-Secretary of State Warren Christopher to include Hamas in the terrorism report.

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, “We cannot but help note that Senator Kerry has amassed a record that has included failing to place himself on record to take all necessary measures to ensure Iran doesn’t acquire a nuclear weapons capacity and trying to ingratiate himself with anti-American, anti-Israel dictatorships like the Assad regime.

“Little wonder he was been described by the Washington Post last July as a ‘prominent admirer’ of Hafez al-Assad.

“Senator Kerry has ignored evidence of the Palestinian Authority’s continuing refusal to implement its Oslo commitments to arrest terrorists and end incitement to hatred and murder against Israel and instead pushed for further Israeli concessions while also criticizing legitimate Israeli counter-terrorist defensive measures like the security fence.

“With this record and approach, Senator Kerry would be weak on Iran, terrorism and supporting Israel.”

Reacting to President Barack Obama’s recent nomination of John Kerry as the next US secretary of state, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius praised his future counterpart’s “personal commitment to Franco-American friendship”.
The comment was a reference to a poorly-kept “secret” that dogged the former Democratic presidential candidate during his bid to unseat then-incumbent George W. Bush in 2004: Kerry has a French connection.

The Massachusetts senator attended a Swiss boarding school as a child, learning to speak fluent French –which reportedly worked wonders in courting his wife, Teresa Heinz, whose parents were Portuguese.
He spent summers at his maternal grandparents’ luxurious home in Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, a village in the north-western coastal region of Brittany. And he counts Brice Lalonde, a former French green party leader and an environment minister in the early 1990s, as one of his first cousins (Lalonde did not respond to an interview request for this article).
Kerry’s ties to France are indeed part of the reason that “reactions to his nomination have been extremely positive on both the right and left in France,” according to Nicole Bacharan, a specialist in French-American relations and national fellow at Stanford’s public policy think tank, the Hoover Institution.
“He’s obviously very competent and very knowledgeable about foreign policy,” Bacharan said. “But of course the French like him especially because he knows France well and speaks good French.”
Kerry’s strong relationship with France will likely be an advantage in his future as America's top diplomat, particularly in Europe. “When you’re secretary of state, it’s a good thing to be perceived as worldly and sophisticated,” Bacharan noted. Kerry Has Investments in Companies Accused of Violating Iran Sanctions.(WS).John Kerry, who will be nominated later today to be the next secretary of state, is the richest member of the U.S. Senate. His estimated net worth is, at minimum, $198.65 million, according to disclosure forms.
Kerry's disclosure forms also reveal that he has invested in companies accused of doing business with Iran.
One of the companies Kerry is invested in is called Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras (Petrobras), it's a Brazilian-based oil and gas corporation. Disclosure forms reveal that Kerry has between $150,000 and 350,000 in assets in the company.
But a 2009 report from Congressional Research Services found that, since 1999, Petrobras has "major investments in Iran's energy sector."
The next year, in 2010, Congress lised Petrobras as a company possibly violating Iran sanctions.
"Among the companies on the list Congress sent to the State Department is the Brazilian state-controlled energy conglomerate Petrobras, which last year received a $2 billion Export-Import Bank loan to develop an oil reserve off the coast of Rio de Janeiro."
Senator Kerry did not sign the letter asking the Obama administration to investigate Iran sanctions violators
The New York Times has labeled that company "Possible violator of the Iran Sanctions Act."
And media reports suggest Petrobras only wants to expand its investments and business in Iran.

Obama to nominate Kerry for secretary of state.(CNN).President Barack Obama will nominate Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts as the next secretary of state, a Democrat who spoke with Kerry told CNN.
The source also said Obama's announcement could come as early as this week. If confirmed by the Senate, Kerry would replace current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who plans to leave her post within the administration. A five-term senator and former Democratic presidential nominee, Kerry is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and, if he chooses to accept the nomination and is confirmed by the Senate, leaves a vacant seat in the Bay State, which would trigger a special election as early as May or June of next year.Hmmmmm......"You shall know them by their fruits. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice on Tuesday met with - but failed to sway - three Republican senators who have criticized her comments about the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.
"I want to say that I'm more troubled today," Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire said after she and fellow Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina met with Mrs. Rice for an hour behind closed doors on Capitol Hill.
Mrs. Rice was accompanied by Acting CIA Director Michael Morell.
"I am significantly troubled by some of the answers we got, and some we didn't get," said Mr. McCain, who has threatened to block Mrs. Rice's confirmation if she is nominated to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
