The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has confirmed the death of an Italian photographer near Slavyansk in Donetsk region but knows nothing about a French journalist or their Russian interpreter.
"We know that the [Italian] photographer died as for his colleague [French journalist], we cannot say anything about him," aide to Interior Minister Slanislav Rechinsky said at a Sunday briefing in Kiev.

He found it difficult to answer a question about the Russian interpreter who accompanied the Italian photographer and French journalist.

Earlier the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said it had no official confirmation of media reports that an Italian journalist and his Russian interpreter were killed near Slavyansk. Neither did the Russian embassy have any official confirmation of the information.

Meanwhile, the French embassy in Ukraine confirmed that a French journalist was wounded near Slavyansk.

Previously, Rossia 24 channel reported that several correspondents from France and Italy had left for the village of Andreyevka near Slavyansk but were caught by mortar fire. The TV report said that a photographer from France was hospitalized. Later it was announced that Italian journalist Andreo Roccelli and his interpreter Andrei Mironov had been killed. The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber built to carry nuclear weapons.
The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber, is an American strategic bomber, designed for penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses that can drop up to sixteen 1,100 kg B83 nuclear bombs.

The exercise will be conducted from May 12-16 and is set “to deter and detect strategic attacks against the US and its allies,” the Strategic Command said in a statement.

“This exercise provides unique training opportunities to incorporate the most current technology and techniques in support of our mission. Continued focus and investment in our strategic capabilities allow US Stratcom to deter, dissuade, and defeat current and future threats to the U.S. and our allies.” said Admiral Cecil Haney, head of Strategic Command.

StratCom is the US’s nuclear command and is responsible for space operations, global strike, global missile defense; and global command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and combating weapons of mass destruction.

Though the timing of the exercise was declared as “unrelated to real-world events,” it does come on the heels of the recent war games in Russia. Announced in November 2013, military drills on countering nuclear strikes were overseen by President Vladimir Putin ahead of the May 9 celebrations dedicated to victory in World War II.

Contrary to the openness of the Russian war games, the US Strategic Command released very few details about the upcoming exercise.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have worsened significantly over the situation in Ukraine. The US continues to endorse and support a military operation by Kiev’s coup-installed government against federalization supporters in the southeast of the country.


Last week, NATO said it may permanently station additional troops in Eastern Europe as a defensive measure against Moscow. Russia views this recent buildup of NATO forces as a provocation and counterproductive in the struggle to deescalate tensions in Ukraine. Hmmmm......Flashback: Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has sent NATO a rather unusual New Year's card... picturing Santa alongside a Russian inter-continental ballistic missile.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet Barack Obama and other Western leaders for the first time since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis when he attends a World War II anniversary in Normandy, France.

Russia’s ambassador to France, Aleksandr Orlov, was first to speak about Putin’s arrival at the ceremony, with his words later confirmed by presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

Obama and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, as well as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, are among those who will participate in the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings on June 6.

In 1944, the Normandy landings opened the Western Front in WWII, which left the Nazis caught between the allied US, British and European troops and the Soviet Army advancing from the East.

French President Francois Hollande said that Putin’s invitation to the Normandy event remains in force.

“I have told Vladimir Putin, as representative of the Russian people, that he’s welcome to attend the ceremony,” Hollande said in an interview with BFM television.

In a later appearance at TF1 television, Hollande explained that his difference of opinion with Putin doesn’t mean that he “has forgotten or will ever forget the millions of lives the Russian people have given [during WWII].”

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian went even further, saying that canceling the Russian president’s invitation would be a historical insult, Reuters reported.

“It is in the order of things that [Putin] should be there,” he told BFM.

Le Drian said that the Normandy campaign “would not have been successful without the Eastern front.”

“In these moments of commemoration, it is important that all of those who took part should be present,” he said.

The commemoration will take place at the Benouville manor house, not far from Caen, with the international ceremony in memory of the troops who died held in the town of Ouistreham, on the Normandy coast.

Ukraine is prepared to complexly settle its debt for Russian gas within 10 days after Russian gas giant Gazprom agrees to return the price to $268 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas and sign the corresponding supplementary agreement, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk said.

"As soon as such a price is set and an additional agreement signed, Ukraine is prepared to settle all debts within ten days. […] But for this, it is necessary for Gazprom to understand that it is unacceptable to apply a political price and use gas as a political weapon," he said at a briefing in Kharkov's airport on Wednesday.

Yatsenyuk added that Ukraine had begun the pre-arbitration process to settle the gas issue.

"Russia's Gazprom has received a complaint from the Ukrainian company [Ukraine's national oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy] that has a clear list of the demands that we believe are legal, and Russia's Gazprom must meet us halfway.

Additionally, we have also proposed - and on multiple occasions - that our Russian partners prolong the contract at the price of $268 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas, like it was in the first quarter of last year. […] If we reach an agreement at the end of 30 days [from the day the complaint was received], that means we will not go to court. Ukrainian troops have opened fire with mortars on Russian journalists from the LifeNews channel near the eastern city of Slaviansk, a statement on the broadcaster’s website said Wednesday.
“Ukrainian troops opened massed intense fire on Russian reporters in Donetsk region,” the statement said.

 “Minutes before the mortar attack [reporter] Alexei Kazannikov informed us that not far from the roadblock Ukrainian troops had camouflaged several Grad rocket systems. Reports were coming about Kiev planning to use multiple rocket launchers against self-defense forces,” the statement added.

 A representative of the local self-defense forces said earlier that Ukrainian troops were firing mortars at the roadblock of Slaviansk activists. In the video footage revealed by LifeNews, smoke and running reporters are seen. A correspondent said that they were forced to change shooting location due to the mortar fire, initiated “on the other side by national guards.”

According to the Donetsk Regional Administration, in the course of Kiev’s special operation, eight people were killed and 16 seriously injured in Slaviansk on Tuesday.

Over the last two months, reporters of Russia's leading channels have been not only denied access to Ukraine, but also kidnapped, beaten and threatened. Broadcasting of Russian media has also been banned across the country.

The OSCE voiced concerns over the alarming situation of media freedom violations in Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also repeatedly condemned Kiev's censorship policies.
