Ukraine - Russia Gas talks stall - Europeans better get ready for a 'Russian Winter".

Ukraine - Russia Gas talks stall - Europeans better get ready for a 'Russian Winter" (RT).

Kiev has not been paying for gas it imports from Russia for months, resulting in a multibillion dollar debt mounting. Russia says that it would invoke the prepay option of the standing contract and would only deliver as much gas as Kiev pays for in advance starting Monday. With Ukraine not willing to pay, this would mean an effective cut-off.

Russia offered a $100 discount to gas price roughly to the level that the Europeans pay. The offer includes recalculation of the current debt, which would revalue gas supplied since April with the discount applied, but Kiev rejected this plan, saying it’s not good enough.

“Ukraine has been offered a very generous discount and yet they still want more. It really is quite incredible – the nerve and the chutzpah of the Ukrainian government in all this. I don’t think any amount of discount would really satisfy Ukraine. They are spoiling for a fight here,” believes journalist Neil Clark.
Instead of compromising and settling the debt, Kiev seems to be preparing to raise the stakes. Over the past few months it has been pumping as much unpaid Russian gas into its underground gas storages as it could and now says it has enough to last till autumn.

Kiev’s desire to dictate the terms to Russia may have an irrational basis underneath, international law expert Alexander Mercouris told RT.
“It is difficult for the Ukrainians at this time to negotiate with Russians about anything. There are many people in Kiev who don’t like that,” he said.

“One of the fundamental problems with the way in which the Ukrainian authorities have been dealing with their multiple crises since they took power in February is that they don’t seem to show very much grasp of reality,” he added.

There are also concerns that Kiev would eventually simply siphon off gas it transits from Russia to European consumers, as was the case during previous rounds of gas stand-offs.

A more distant problem will arise in winter. Normally Ukraine would accumulate gas intended for Europe in summertime and deliver it in winter, because that’s how the Ukrainian gas pipeline system is designed. With gas from the storages use for Ukraine’s own consumption, there would simply not be enough for Europe next winter.
“The Ukrainian government has been intransigent and putting the people of Europe at risk. That’s why the EU is actually cautiously supporting Russia’s position at this time,” political analyst Bill Dores told RT.

Ukraine has for years enjoyed a politically motivated preferred treatment by Russia in terms of gas price discounts, he added. Now there is a government in Kiev hostile towards Russia, and Moscow has no reason to support it.

An escalating conflict would hurt all the three parties involved. But the Ukrainian government may be tempted to raise the stakes now, said Mercouris.

“There is an expectation that once things are deteriorating in Ukraine, it could be blamed on the Russians,” he explained.

With Ukrainian economy already in peril, painful austerity measures demanded by international creditors in exchange for loans and a political turmoil in the eastern provinces, Kiev has loads of blame to apportion in the future. Hmmmm.....Better stock up on Wooleys, Cause Europe can't deliver much Hydro power either !! You heard it first at MFS.

Ukraine - Kiev preparing for shutdown of Russian gas on Monday.

Ukraine - Kiev preparing for shutdown of Russian gas on Monday. (RT) [Googletranslate].

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yatsenyuk ordered to begin preparing for an end to fuel supplies from Russia. Chairman of "Naftogaz Ukraine" Andrew Kobolev said in turn that Kiev does not repay its debt by Monday, "Gazprom", because he believes the price assigned to Moscow, controversial.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Yatsenyuk said that the country should prepare for shutdown of Russian gas on Monday.

Head of the Ukrainian gas company "Naftogaz" states that a compromise with Russia is still possible, and that his company is ready to sign a contract, writes InoTV .

According to Andrew Koboleva, Ukraine's debts for gas will not be paid, because the position of "Gazprom" is "so not constructive, and I would even say aggressive, that Ukraine sees no reason to pay the disputed unpaid bills."

"In fact, we have already paid the entire amount, which we consider certain, for delivery at a price that is not in doubt. It was the first thing we did to the negotiations became possible. As requested Russia ", - said the head of" Naftogaz Ukraine "in an interview with U.S. television channel CNN.

Kobolev noted that Russian and Ukrainian sides have been negotiating for weeks. "We achieved market prices. And at the end of the week the Russian Federation told us: "No. We do not agree to conduct trade negotiations, we are ready to discuss some discount. "

And with this discount Ukraine, in fact, never agree. I think European countries too, "- said the businessman. Hmmmm.....Without gas hard to get another Michelin Star, even for the French.

"A Man with A Vision" - Dep PM Dimitry Rogozin pledges support for ‘ultrapatriotic’ party

"A Man with A Vision" - Dep PM Dimitry Rogozin pledges support for ‘ultrapatriotic’ party. (RT).
“It is very desirable that the patriots have a significant representation in the parliament, not just a few seats,” Dmitry Rogozin said in an interview with Rosinformburo news agency. He noted that the best candidate for this is the Motherland Party.

Rogozin was among the founders of Motherland when it was created in 2003 and also helped to re-register the party in 2012. In 2006, Motherland dissolved and its members joined center-left party Fair Russia in order to maintain representation under changed circumstances. It was registered as an independent party again after the introduction of the new law that allowed for existence of smaller independent political projects.

The 2016 parliamentary elections are a good chance to add some fresh forces and fresh blood to the State Duma ranks, Rogozin noted in the interview adding that a lot of people were dreaming of such turn and a lot would benefit from it.

As the patriotic nationalist party makes a claim for parliamentary seats it should concentrate on the fight against corruption, the deputy PM holds. Rogozin added that the Motherland is a large organization, a ‘sleeping giant’ and can easily switch from opposition work to cooperation with parliamentary majority party, United Russia.

Rogozin also said that in his view United Russia suffered from large number of insincere members who only used it as a means to get power and benefits, acknowledging that political power attracted all kinds of people in great numbers. He criticized other parliamentary parties too – for “remaining in their political trenches and keeping the same image for too long.”

Russian political experts were skeptical about Rogozin’s plan. Mikhail Vinogradov of the St. Petersburg Politics Foundation told the business daily Kommersant the all parliamentary parties were already using ‘patriotic’ rhetoric and Motherland would have some tough time to prove its worth.

Aleksandr Kynev of the Foundation for Development of Information policy questioned the value of Rogozin’s support for Motherland, saying that the government’s position made the former Motherland boss dependent on other people’s decisions.

In mid-2013 a group of experts attached to the Russian Public Chamber conducted a public opinion research and forecasted that nationalists could get about 10 percent of seats at the 2016 parliamentary poll.

Before that, the Levada Public Opinion Center released a report that demonstrated that the non-existent ‘Nationalist Party’ ranked second in popularity among Russians, losing only to the centrist-conservative United Russia.Hmmm.....Dep PM Rogozin is a man to be reckoned with

Russia will respond to increased NATO activity near border, says top general.

Russia will respond to increased NATO activity near border, says top general.(Taz).
Russia's top general said on Friday that Moscow would retaliate against increased NATO activity near its border as tensions with the western alliance over Ukraine escalate, Reuters reported.
Since Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea region, NATO has moved to reassure its nervous eastern European allies. Ships and planes have been temporarily deployed to their countries and military exercises in the region stepped up.

"NATO's military groupings in the Baltic states, Poland and Romania are being built up, as well as the military presence of the bloc in the Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea," General Valery Gerasimov, the chief of general staff of the Russian armed forces, told a defense conference in Moscow.

"The intensity, the operational and combat readiness of the alliance's troops is being increased near the Russian border. In these circumstances ... we have to take retaliatory measures."

Russia has long been wary of the expansion of the military bloc of 28 nations into eastern Europe, with President Vladimir Putin saying last month that his annexation of Crimea was partly influenced by NATO enlargement.

The crisis in Ukraine - which holds a presidential election on Sunday seen as crucial for its fragile democracy - has left ties between Russia and the Western alliance at their lowest ebb since the Cold War.

NATO last month suspended all practical cooperation with Russia to protest its absorption of Crimea.
But despite tension over Ukraine, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said earlier this month that the bloc does not expect to base large numbers of new combat troops in eastern Europe.

"CHANGE" - Europe's future Face might look totally different.

"CHANGE" - Europe's future Face might look totally different.HT: Zerohedge.

Mario Draghi may have lied to Zero Hedge when saying there was no European "Plan B" (or Z), but he was right when he said that there has been a "vast amount of political capital that has been invested into the Euro." There is one problem: that political capital (like virtually every other form of capital in Europe) is evaporating at an unprecedented pace.

The following map from Votewatch may be in French, but what needs no translation is what Europe can expect following the 2014 elections for European Parliament which start today and continue until the 25.

In short - with the biggest projected "gainer" in the election, and a forecast winner in places like the UK, France, Denmark, Poland, Finland and others, being v, projected to gain 56 parliamentary seats to a record 177 (at the expense of popular European parties), the surge in the "revulsion and loathing" at the concept of a "united Europe" is unprecedented.

At this rate one more election and the Eurosceptics will be the single largest political block in a "United" Europe. We hope even hard line eurocrats can see the problem with that outcome.

"RESET" - Back to 'The Good Old Days' - US starts countrywide nuclear drill after similar war games in Russia.

"RESET" - Back to 'The Good Old Days' - US starts countrywide nuclear drill after similar war games in Russia. (RT).
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber built to carry nuclear weapons.
The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber, is an American strategic bomber, designed for penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses that can drop up to sixteen 1,100 kg B83 nuclear bombs.

The exercise will be conducted from May 12-16 and is set “to deter and detect strategic attacks against the US and its allies,” the Strategic Command said in a statement.

“This exercise provides unique training opportunities to incorporate the most current technology and techniques in support of our mission. Continued focus and investment in our strategic capabilities allow US Stratcom to deter, dissuade, and defeat current and future threats to the U.S. and our allies.” said Admiral Cecil Haney, head of Strategic Command.

StratCom is the US’s nuclear command and is responsible for space operations, global strike, global missile defense; and global command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and combating weapons of mass destruction.

Though the timing of the exercise was declared as “unrelated to real-world events,” it does come on the heels of the recent war games in Russia. Announced in November 2013, military drills on countering nuclear strikes were overseen by President Vladimir Putin ahead of the May 9 celebrations dedicated to victory in World War II.

Contrary to the openness of the Russian war games, the US Strategic Command released very few details about the upcoming exercise.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have worsened significantly over the situation in Ukraine. The US continues to endorse and support a military operation by Kiev’s coup-installed government against federalization supporters in the southeast of the country.

Last week, NATO said it may permanently station additional troops in Eastern Europe as a defensive measure against Moscow. Russia views this recent buildup of NATO forces as a provocation and counterproductive in the struggle to deescalate tensions in Ukraine. Hmmmm......Flashback: Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has sent NATO a rather unusual New Year's card... picturing Santa alongside a Russian inter-continental ballistic missile.

Pres Putin to meet Obama, Merkel at WWII Normandy landing anniversary in France

Pres Putin to meet Obama, Merkel at WWII Normandy landing anniversary in France.(RT).

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet Barack Obama and other Western leaders for the first time since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis when he attends a World War II anniversary in Normandy, France.

Russia’s ambassador to France, Aleksandr Orlov, was first to speak about Putin’s arrival at the ceremony, with his words later confirmed by presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

Obama and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, as well as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, are among those who will participate in the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings on June 6.

In 1944, the Normandy landings opened the Western Front in WWII, which left the Nazis caught between the allied US, British and European troops and the Soviet Army advancing from the East.

French President Francois Hollande said that Putin’s invitation to the Normandy event remains in force.

“I have told Vladimir Putin, as representative of the Russian people, that he’s welcome to attend the ceremony,” Hollande said in an interview with BFM television.

In a later appearance at TF1 television, Hollande explained that his difference of opinion with Putin doesn’t mean that he “has forgotten or will ever forget the millions of lives the Russian people have given [during WWII].”

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian went even further, saying that canceling the Russian president’s invitation would be a historical insult, Reuters reported.

“It is in the order of things that [Putin] should be there,” he told BFM.

Le Drian said that the Normandy campaign “would not have been successful without the Eastern front.”

“In these moments of commemoration, it is important that all of those who took part should be present,” he said.

The commemoration will take place at the Benouville manor house, not far from Caen, with the international ceremony in memory of the troops who died held in the town of Ouistreham, on the Normandy coast.

Ukraine prepared to settle gas debt within 10 days, if Gazprom lowers price to $268 - Ukrainian PM

Ukraine prepared to settle gas debt within 10 days, if Gazprom lowers price to $268 - Ukrainian PM (RBTH).

Ukraine is prepared to complexly settle its debt for Russian gas within 10 days after Russian gas giant Gazprom agrees to return the price to $268 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas and sign the corresponding supplementary agreement, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk said.

"As soon as such a price is set and an additional agreement signed, Ukraine is prepared to settle all debts within ten days. […] But for this, it is necessary for Gazprom to understand that it is unacceptable to apply a political price and use gas as a political weapon," he said at a briefing in Kharkov's airport on Wednesday.

Yatsenyuk added that Ukraine had begun the pre-arbitration process to settle the gas issue.

"Russia's Gazprom has received a complaint from the Ukrainian company [Ukraine's national oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy] that has a clear list of the demands that we believe are legal, and Russia's Gazprom must meet us halfway.

Additionally, we have also proposed - and on multiple occasions - that our Russian partners prolong the contract at the price of $268 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas, like it was in the first quarter of last year. […] If we reach an agreement at the end of 30 days [from the day the complaint was received], that means we will not go to court. If this agreement is not reached, then 24 days remain and we will meet with Gazprom at the arbitration court in Stockholm," he said. Hmm....Ukrainian Mobster tactics?

Belorussian President Lukashenko: "The events happening in Ukraine, do not allow us to remain uninvolved,"

Belorussian President Lukashenko: "The events happening in Ukraine, including Odesa, "do not allow us to remain uninvolved,"(VOR).

The events happening in Ukraine, including Odesa, "do not allow us to remain uninvolved," Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko told his counterparts from Russia, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan at a Kremlin meeting on Thursday.

"The Ukrainian events do not allow us to sit idle. The Odesa events evoke some bad comparisons. We remember Khatyn, several hundreds of Belarusian villages burned down by the Nazis," Lukashenko said.

"We cannot be detached observers because our people are there, they are pleading for help and demanding a reaction to such incidents," the Belarusian president said. He said he "was concerned about the totally inadequate reaction of our, so to say, Western partners."

"This is just amazing: what is not allowed to happen in one situation is permitted and encouraged in another," he stressed. Read the full story here.

Ukrainian Troops Bombard Russian TV Crew Near Slaviansk.

Ukrainian Troops Bombard Russian TV Crew Near Slaviansk.(RaiNovosti).
Ukrainian troops have opened fire with mortars on Russian journalists from the LifeNews channel near the eastern city of Slaviansk, a statement on the broadcaster’s website said Wednesday.
“Ukrainian troops opened massed intense fire on Russian reporters in Donetsk region,” the statement said.

“Minutes before the mortar attack [reporter] Alexei Kazannikov informed us that not far from the roadblock Ukrainian troops had camouflaged several Grad rocket systems. Reports were coming about Kiev planning to use multiple rocket launchers against self-defense forces,” the statement added.

A representative of the local self-defense forces said earlier that Ukrainian troops were firing mortars at the roadblock of Slaviansk activists. In the video footage revealed by LifeNews, smoke and running reporters are seen. A correspondent said that they were forced to change shooting location due to the mortar fire, initiated “on the other side by national guards.”

According to the Donetsk Regional Administration, in the course of Kiev’s special operation, eight people were killed and 16 seriously injured in Slaviansk on Tuesday.

Over the last two months, reporters of Russia's leading channels have been not only denied access to Ukraine, but also kidnapped, beaten and threatened. Broadcasting of Russian media has also been banned across the country.

The OSCE voiced concerns over the alarming situation of media freedom violations in Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also repeatedly condemned Kiev's censorship policies.
