Thirteen cars of a tanker train carrying crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas derailed in Alberta, Canada causing an explosion and fire. The incident prompted an evacuation of the area, said Canadian National Railway.

Update: Police confirmed six dead while several area hospitals were flooded with 31 patients, including 11 in critical condition.


A double decker bus was hit by a train this morning in Canada. Details about the crash are not known at this time but Marc Messier, a spokesman with the fire department, said that multiple people died in the crash.

CTV reports that the passenger trail derailed after it hit a double-decker bus at Fallowfield Road and Woodroffe Avenue in Ottawa. The front of the bus was completely destroyed. One witness said that the front end was “ripped off.”

The Business Insider reports that a Via Rail passenger train and an OC Transpo bus were involved in the crash. Messier didn’t know how many people were killed in the crash but he did say that all of the fatalities were on the bus. Several people were also injured bus. The fire department spokesman said that there were no serious injuries on the train. Fire fighters and other emergency responders are currently at the scene.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said that would send investigators to the scene. This article will be updated as more information comes available.More details to follow.More photo's here

Update: At least 5 dead after Via Rail train, city bus collide in Ottawa

Witnesses say the bus appeared to ignore warning signals at the crossing.

Via Rail said there were no major injuries reported on the train, but it suspended its Ottawa-Toronto service.

Pascal Lolgis, who witnessed the crash, said the bus appeared to drive through a lowered crossing barrier.

"Boom! It went into the train like that,"Lolgis said. "He didn't stop. He must have lost his brakes. Or he had an ... attack or whatever.

"He just didn't stop. He just keep going like that. Then he get hit."

Another witness, Mark Cogan, said the rail barrier was down.

"The train is going through," Cogan said. "And I was just looking around, just watching things happen. And noticed that in the bus lane, the double-decker bus ... I saw him and he just kept going.

"I just thought maybe there's a side way around or something but instantly he just ... he smoked the train. He went through the guard rail and just hammered the train and then it was just mayhem."

The time between the train leaving the tracks and it slamming to the ground was only about 10 seconds, but it felt like "forever," said Deanna Villella of Welland, Ont."The train just flipped on its side and it just kept going. I didn't know what was happening," Villella said."Everybody's stuff was flying by and people were flying by. Everything was crashing and people were screaming."
The six-car train, which had originated in Niagara Falls, Ont., derailed at 3:30 p.m. in Burlington — about 100 metres from where a freight train derailed some four years ago.
Area residents described a chaotic scene of emergency vehicles, sirens blaring and helicopters buzzing overhead one of Canada's busiest rail corridors.
The three dead Via engineers — one a trainee — were riding in the cab of the locomotive. When asked if the trainee was the one driving, emergency officials said they didn't have that information.
A fourth Via worker was also injured.The train's manifest listed 75 passengers. Although only 50 had been located as of Sunday night, Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell said it wasn't clear that the manifest was accurate. A sweep of the area did not turn up any injured passengers.
"Quite often people will self-evacuate," he said. "They'll determine that they don't need to stay at the site or require minimal treatment and will walk away."
The bodies of the three engineers were removed from the wreckage around 8 p.m. Their names weren't immediately released pending notification of family.Via's chief operating officer called the derailment "tragic."The train came off the tracks at Plains Road and King Road near Aldershot station. It was not immediately known how fast the train was travelling, and conditions were clear and dry at the time.
When Matt Kernaghan heard about the crash, he immediately guessed where it had happened, saying he's seen the aftermath of two previous derailments there."A lot of trains come through here, so yeah, maybe it's just the frequency of trains that causes the derailments," he said.Read the full story here.
