Alberta Islamic Welfare Association hosted on Family Day (February 5, 2016) Syrian refugees and their families for a social gathering with members of the local Muslim community in Edmonton and the Imam Shaban Sherif Mady.

Sheikh Shaban Sherif Mady (شعبان شريف ماضي), was a scholar at al-Azhar theological school in Egypt and served at the Ministry of Endowment and Ministry of Education of the Egyptian government. Today, he is the Imam of a Muslim congregation in Edmonton, Alberta which holds its Friday prayers at Glengarry Hall in Edmonton.

In his speech to the Syria refugees, Shaban Sherif Mady greeted them, emphasized the merits of the people of Greater Syria in the eyes of Allah for defeating the Crusaders and the Tatars and ended with a supplication to Allah.

Shaban Sherif Mady dedicated his Friday sermon on December 18, 2015 to Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he sees as the greatest ally of the Muslims. Hmmm.......'Real Change'. Read the full story here.

Thirteen cars of a tanker train carrying crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas derailed in Alberta, Canada causing an explosion and fire. The incident prompted an evacuation of the area, said Canadian National Railway.

One rail car carrying liquefied petroleum gas exploded and three others caught fire about 80 kilometers west of Edmonton in Alberta,Canada – the country’s fourth-most populous province located in the west. The accident took place around 1am local time.

“We have cars on fire right now and there was an explosion earlier this morning. The major priority right now for our guys out in the field is containing these fires,” said Parkland County spokesman Carson Mills. He added that nine cars were carrying liquefied petroleum gas and four others were transporting crude.

Two people are missing, and states of emergency have been declared in communities throughout southern Alberta, including the City of Calgary, Lethbridge and several others, as heavy rains over the past day have caused waterways to swell over their banks, washing out roads and bridges, forcing some local residents to evacuate.

The City of Calgary activated its Municipal Emergency Plan this morning, as the rising water levels along many streams and rivers in southern Alberta are expected to affect the city later today, and the situation could get worse as heavy rainfall continues throughout today, tonight and into Friday.
Communities in Calgary along the Bow and Elbow Rivers, including Mission, Elbow Park, Stanley Park, Roxboro, Rideau and Discovery Ridge, have been evacuated, with new evacuations ordered for Sunnyside, Bowness-1, Bowness-2, East Village-Inglewood, Inglewood, Montgomery, Westmount and Bonnybrook.
According to the notice: "Residents are encouraged to find shelter with family or friends for the next 72 hours minimum. Reception centres have been set up for residents who cannot find alternate accommodations."
A flash flood warning has been issued for Lethbridge County, due to "threat of extremely dangerous and rapid flooding", with an evacuation order being issued for all residents of the Oldman River valley.
This follows states of emergency that have been called in several smaller communities in the southern part of the province, as waters accumulating in rivers and streams from the heavy rain that has been falling since yesterday began to force those rivers and streams to overflow their banks.

Most roads still remain open, however several sections of local highways have been closed due to the flooding. This includes Highway 1A running through Canmore from Banff to Morley, Highway 93 between Banff and Jasper, a section of Highway 40 from Galatea to Highway 1, Highway 66 from Hwy 22 to Elbow Falls Winter Closure Gate, and part of Highway 22 through Chain Lakes National Park (from Hwy 533 to Hwy 520).

Canmore

The town of Canmore, Alberta, along the Trans-Canada Highway, about 100 km west of Calgary, declared a state of local emergency early this morning as the Cougar Creek overflowed its banks, prompting officials to close the Trans-Canada Highway through the town, as well as several local roads and a pedestrian bridge, and evacuate many residents living close to the creek to the Elevation Place community centre. Power outages have been reported in the town, as well as sewage seepage into many basements.Read the full story here and more here.

Then complains about ‘foreign interference’.(NP).By Terry Glavin.If there were a global competition for the most brazen and preposterously transparent attempt by a ruling political party to change a necessary subject of national debate with alarmist distractions and hubbub, the Conservative escapade engineered in Ottawa these past few days really deserves some kind of grand prize.let’s review what’s really going on, shall we?
The $5.5-billion Enbridge pipeline project is all about sending Alberta bitumen in huge oil tankers to China. Beijing’s own state enterprises are among the project’s major backers, and Beijing has been buying up Alberta’s oilpatch at such a dizzying pace lately it’s hard to keep up.

1. In the spring of 2010, China’s state-owned Sinopec Corp. took a $4.65-billion piece of Syncrude.
2.  Then the China Investment Corporation, which is run by the Chinese Communist Party, took possession of a $1.25-billion share of Penn West Petroleum.
3. Last summer, the Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation gobbled up Opti Canada for $2.34 billion. And so on.
4. Then, last month, Sinopec spent $2.2-billion to take over Daylight Energy Ltd.,
5.  and last week, Petro-China, with the final push of $1.9 billion, became the owner and manager of the MacKay River oilsands project. This is what Ottawa doesn’t want you noticing.

Until now, Beijing’s strategy has been to fly under the radar by taking only pieces of oil sands ventures and to murmur occasionally about bringing in Chinese workers or pulling up stakes altogether should they hear too much backchat. Now, everything’s changed. Sinopec’s Daylight deal was a first: it was a complete takeover of a Canadian oil sands company by a Chinese state corporation. The MacKay River deal was a first, too, but in a bigger way: when the McKay project is up and running in 2014 it will be a full Chinese show, with a boss that answers directly to Beijing. The thing is, nobody in Ottawa wants to have a serious conversation about any of this.During the 2008 election campaign, the vow to block the export of Canadian bitumen for processing offshore didn’t come from Leonardo DiCaprio in some underground command bunker of Hollywood eco-freaks. It was what the federal Conservative Party said. Back then, Ottawa’s very own Competition Policy Review made a series of recommendations about how to deal with takeovers of Canadian resources by foreign state-owned companies. Ottawa promptly ignored those recommendations. In last May’s federal election, the subject simply didn’t come up. And now it’s serious. Really serious.
It’s not just old-school Canadian nationalists who think so. Last April, a poll conducted for Canadian environmental groups found that 72.8 per cent of British Columbians were worried about China’s increasing command of Canada’s resources sector.
This isn’t just old Vancouver hippies worrying about the implications of 200-plus tankers taking oil out of Kitimat every year. Last summer, John Bruk, the Asia Pacific Foundation’s founding president, warned that Ottawa was ignoring the rapid emergence of Chinese government interests “in sheep’s clothing” taking over Canada’s natural resource industries. Bruk told B.C. Business magazine: “Are we jeopardizing prosperity for our children and grandchildren while putting at risk our economic independence?
