A Pole and a German citizen claim to have found a Gold-laden Nazi train in Poland? (TheNews).

The development revives rumours of German ghost trains hidden in the mountains of Lower Silesia as the Red Army advanced towards Berlin at the tail-end of World War II.

The claimants want 10 percent of the value of the find in return for revealing the location of the supposedly 150m-long armoured train.

As outlined in their claim to Wałbrzych authorities, “the train contains valuable objects, costly industrial materials and precious metal ores.”

Marika Tokarska of the District Office in Wałbrzych has said that although there are “various uncertainties regarding the matter... there are many details that give credence to the fact that the train has been discovered.”

Rumours have endured over the decades that the Nazis built secret tunnels in the mountains of Lower Silesia. Wałbrzych, which was part of Germany prior to World War II and named Waldenburg, was taken by the Red Army on 8 May 1945.

On Stalin's orders Poland's borders were shifted west following the war, and the city became part of Poland. Most local ethnic Germans were resettled west by the Allies to within Germany's new borders.

As Germans fled the advancing Red Army at the end of the war, innumerable valuables were evacuated. Thousands of these, including artworks such as Raphael's 'Portrait of a Young Man', which had been looted from Poland's Czartoryski Museum during the war, have not been traced until this day. Japanese officials have demanded that South Korea remove memorials in Korea and abroad commemorating the Japanese Imperial Army’s use of Korean sexual slaves during the Second World War, Yonhap News Agency reported Sunday, citing South Korean government sources.

The demand was made this week during a monthly meeting between South Korean and Japanese officials. This was the fifth round of talks launched earlier this year in an attempt to resolve outstanding bilateral issues between the two countries, Yonhap explained.

The Japanese side demanded that South Korea remove a statue commemorating Korean sex slaves, which were euphemistically known as ‘comfort women’, in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, as well as monuments in several US cities.

South Korean officials were said to have reacted negatively, saying that the monuments were installed by private groups via donations.

"If Japan resolves the military comfort women issue, it will naturally influence the [monument building] movement by private groups…it is not something that the [South Korean] government could guarantee," a high-ranking South Korean official told Yonhap. "Our position is that Japan should come up with resolutions that can appease the victims," the unnamed official added.

The painful memory of the Korean sex slaves, who were forced to serve in brothels for the Imperial Japanese Army during the war, is one of the most difficult outstanding issues in South Korean-Japanese bilateral relations.

Seoul is said to be pressing Japan to issue an apology and compensation to the 54 remaining living victims of the wartime atrocities (their average age is now 88), IBT explained. Read the full story here.

"Lost And Found" - 'Belarusian List' of Katyn Victims Found.(RN).The long-sought "Belarusian list" of Polish officers executed in 1940 by the Soviet secret police, the NKVD, has been found in Russia’s state military archives, Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported. Natalia Lebedeva, a leading Russian historian on Katyn and a senior researcher at the Institute of General History (Russian Academy of Sciences), found the document in the archive of the Soviet 15th military escort brigade stationed in Belarus in 1940, which was engaged in transporting NKVD prisoners to Minsk. The Belarusian list contains 1,996 names of prisoners taken from cities in what is now western Belarus: Brest, Pinsk, Baranovichi, Grodno, Bialystok and others. They were apparently shot along with some 20,000 other Polish officers at prison camps in Russia (Kozelsk and Ostashkov) and Ukraine (Starobelsk). Lebedeva, who said all the families of the shot officers were deported to Kazakhstan, plans to compare the list of the dead with the list of those deported.According to archival documents, 21,857 Poles, mostly captured Polish army officers, were executed in the spring of 1940 by the NKVD. Despite the fact the killings occurred at a number of NKVD prison camps, the mass executions are called the Katyn Massacre, after the Katyn forest in Smolensk region where many of the executions were carried out. In Soviet times, the massacre was attributed to the Nazis, but in 1990 Moscow acknowledged that the Soviet authorities were responsible. Russia provided a list with the names of 14,552 soldiers who were shot and buried in Katyn, Kalinin, Mednoe and in Kharkov (Ukraine). In 1994, Kiev gave Warsaw the so-called Ukrainian list, which included the names of 3,435 victims. In the ensuing years, researchers began to doubt they would ever find the Belarusian list. On December 23, 2011 Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that not a single citizen of Poland was shot in 1940 on the territory of Belarus. According to Lukashenko, Belarus was only a "transit point." It’s D-Day and President Obama is hitting the beaches – of sunny California! Instead of scheduling a brief event to mark the 68th anniversary of America’s brutal landing on the shores of Normandy, Obama is already on his way to San Francisco, where he will hold two fundraisers before moving on to Beverly Hills to stage two more. Obama failed to mark D-Day with either a speech or a written proclamation both last year or the year before. He did give a speech in 2009, the 65th anniversary of the event. First Lady Michelle Obama, who has made much of her “Joining Forces” campaign to support military families, also has nothing planned for D-Day. She’ll be in New York City for a fundraiser and then in Philadelphia to meet with campaign volunteers. Obama’s failure to mark D-Day in any significant way is both a shame and a political mistake. According to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, two critical swing states – Florida and Pennsylvania, are among the top five states in terms of veterans’ population. Within the top twelve are four others – Michigan, Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina – all states Obama desperately needs to carry.
