  • Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.)to unveil $9T deficit-reduction plan.(TheHill).He said Sunday the federal government can save $1 trillion though tax reform, a proposal that will put him at odds with some GOP colleagues.Coburn plans to unveil a $9 trillion deficit-reduction package Monday that would give lawmakers a menu of policy options to reduce the deficit.Coburn has suggested $1 trillion in savings could come from eliminating special tax breaks, such as the tax subsidy for ethanol, which he has fought to end.“We can increase revenues by adjusting the tax code and lowering it,” Coburn said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday morning. “We can save over $1 trillion doing that.”Coburn has also proposed cutting $1 trillion from the Defense Department budget over the next decade and more than $500 billion from other government agencies.“We can save $1 trillion at the Pentagon over the next 10 years — not hard. It’s difficult but it’s not super hard. It’s common sense,” he said.Coburn favors saving $1 trillion in federal interest payments over the next nine years by curbing the projected growth of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. He said Congress can still provide “what seniors need” and save trillions of dollars.Coburn will reveal other details of his plan at a press conference scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Senate.Read the full story here.

  • Who Is Losing Legitimacy Over Syria?(Elliott Abrams).American policy toward Syria is increasingly inconsistent and unintelligible. On Saturday, the Assad regime murdered another thirty-two peaceful protesters. What was the secretary of state’s reaction? She was in Istanbul, where some Syrian opposition leaders are located, but she did not meet with them—nor it seemed did she dispatch any of her aides to do so. Instead, she advised them to negotiate with the Assad government. The Washington Post tells the story: “Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was meeting with Turkish officials a few miles away, a day after she offered formal U.S. recognition to the Libyan rebel Transitional National Council, also while in Istanbul.“But she made no effort to meet with the Syrian opposition there, despite hopes expressed before the conference by some opposition figures that she would. Instead, she offered only lukewarm support for the Syrian gathering and made it clear that the United States hopes the protest movement will engage in dialogue with the Syrian government, something most opposition groups reject.“‘We’re encouraged by what we see the Syrian people are doing for themselves. This is not anything the United States or any other country is doing,’ she said after talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. ‘It’s what the Syrian people are doing, trying to form an opposition that can provide a pathway, hopefully in peaceful cooperation with the government, to a better future.’”This statement came just days after she said the regime had “lost legitimacy,” a bizarre phrase to use regarding a government that never had any. But that phrase was regarded as a toughening of the U.S. position, so what explains her advice to people being shot dead in the street that they “cooperate” with the man shooting them?I shudder to think how a Syrian protester must view the United States when he is risking his life and the secretary of state is still dreaming of “peaceful cooperation” from the government shooting him and his fellow demonstrators dead in the streets day after day. Mrs. Clinton’s remark about Assad’s loss of legitimacy was, we are told, unscripted. “The administration’s policy toward the Syrian autocrat has lately been shaped more by diplomatic improvisation than methodical planning within the White House,” the Washington Post reported. This may explain why the secretary oscillates between tougher and weaker rhetoric and positions, but it is a terrible indictment of the Obama Administration foreign policy team that it cannot get its act together after thirty months in power. This Administration’s Syria policy has now moved from “improvisation” to incoherence.Read the full story here.

  • Syrian forces surround protesting eastern town.(Reuters).By Khaled Yacoub Oweis.AMMAN (Reuters) – Syrian tanks surrounded a town near the border with Iraq’s Sunni heartland on Sunday after tens of thousands, emboldened by defections among security forces, took to the streets there denouncing President Bashar al-Assad, residents said.Assad, from the minority Alawite sect, has sent troops in to towns across the country to try to end four months of protests against his rule. But activists say discontent is growing within the mostly Sunni army rank and file.Killings, mostly carried out by ultra loyalist units, are leading to limited defections within the military, which is controlled by mostly Alawite officers who ultimately answer to Assad’s feared brother Maher, activists say.Syria’s fractured opposition is also taking steps to unite, forming a 25-member National Salvation Council composed of Islamists, liberals and independents at a meeting in Istanbul on Saturday and agreeing to work toward a democratic vision.More than 1,400 civilians have been killed since the protests began in March, human rights organizations say. Some 1,000 troops and security forces backed by tanks and helicopters surrounded Albu Kamal overnight, a poor eastern border crossing with Iraq, a day after Military Intelligence agents there killed five protesters, including a 14 year old boy, residents said. The killings drove thousands into the streets, overwhelming soldiers and secret police. Residents said around 100 Air Force Intelligence personnel and the crew of at least four armored vehicles joined the protesters.“The protesters returned several army personnel carriers today as a sign of good will. The regime knows it will meet tough resistance if it attacks Albu Kamal, and that Iraqi tribes on the other side of the border will rush to help their brethren,” said one activist in the region, who declined to be named for fear of arrest.Another activist said: “The whole of Albu Kamal went to the streets after the killings. Several armored personnel carriers moved into the center of the town to stop them, but ended joining sides with the human wave.”Read the full story here.

  • The Life of a Jihadi Internet Post.(InvestigativeProject)."[M]ilitary training is an obligation in Islam upon every sane, male, mature Muslim, whether rich or poor, whether studying or working and whether living in a Muslim or non-Muslim country," stated a recent article on jihadist website Islam Policy. What's unusual about the post is that it first appeared as post on an al-Qaida media site in 2000."Therefore, those Muslims unable to participate in Jihad at this present time, whatever the reason, have no excuse before Allah for not training for Jihad."Much of the action-oriented jihadi media, including videos of suicide bombings, comes and goes. But key documents and clips often live beyond a single post. These staples of jihad capture the attention of would-be jihadis and are reposted with minor modifications for years on end.For example, "How to Prepare for Jihad" is one of the classics. It briefly and effectively describes the obligation for physical training and fitness. Part of its fame also derives from being authored by al-Qaida's original media organization, Azzam Publications."True Iman (faith) is manifested in actions, and if someone truly wishes to fight Jihad he will prepare himself in all possible ways," the article says. From individual exercises to advice on martial arts and survival training, the article provides a strong overview of which types of exercises are best for battlefield and operational fitness.Islam Policy's most recent version of "How to Prepare for Jihad" erased information about training abroad and reflected the current emphasis on lone-wolf jihadis. Islampolicy's predecessor site, Revolution Muslim, became notorious for posting the texts of Anwar al-Awlaki, a leading jihadi ideologue who emphasizes individual attacks. According to her police interview, one young female jihadi was almost entirely radicalized from the posts on this site, particularly those from Awlaki.Read the full story here.

  • Lybia - “We will kill, we will die for oil. Rebels, NATO, we don’t care. (Al-Arabiya).“We will kill, we will die for oil. Rebels, NATO, we don’t care. We will defend our oil to the last drop of blood and we are going to use everything,” said Muammar Qaddafi’s representative, Moussa Ibrahim, at Istanbul’s Libya Contact Group meeting on Friday.Despite the announcement by the international consortium of leaders and representatives recognizing the Transitional National Council (TNC) as Libya’s “legitimate authority,” it is clearly not the final step away from Colonel Qaddafi.Fighting began in Libya following violent crackdowns and aerial raids on peaceful protests and residential areas, beginning on February 15th this year.Benghazi, a city on the northeastern coast of Libya, was established as the TNC’s capital. A UN Security Council Resolution froze the assets of Mr. Qaddafi and his close associates on February 28th, restricting travel as well. The resolution also called for an investigation by the International Criminal Court (ICC).Meanwhile, Mr. Qaddafi vowed to “fight ‘til the last drop of blood” embarking on a full-scale offensive against his people, refusing to relinquish the powerful role he has held since 1969. The TNC had previously received several recognition nods from nations such as Italy, France and Spain. Europeans imported 85 percent of Libya’s 1.6 million barrels per day prior to the revolution. Libyan oil provided of 32 percent of Italian oil imports, 16 percent of French imports and 13 percent of Spanish imports.Europeans turned to Russia and Saudi Arabia to supplement lost volumes.Libyan assets frozen in Canada are estimated by the TNC to total $100 billion. The opposition party is now asking for access to 10 to 20 percent of that, just enough to arm, feed and care for their people during this time of war. While the recognition of the TNC by the Libyan Contact Group is a significant step for the opposition, their road ahead has not yet been fully cleared. With Colonel Qaddafi still fighting, the security of repaired oil fields, rigs and transport infrastructure cannot be guaranteed, and thus it is doubtful that the TNC will invest their limited funds in such a gamble. Rather, arms, armour and food will take precedence. NATO assistance and swift UN Security Council action are needed to assist the opposition groups climb out from under Mr. Qaddafi’s iron fist.Only once Qaddafi’s forces are permanently defeated will oil production resume in Libya.Read the full story here.

  • Russia refuses to recognize Libya rebels as legitimate government, clashing with West.(Al-Arabiya).Russia on Monday United States and other countries that have recognized the Libyan rebels’ National Transitional Council as a legitimate government, saying they were taking sides in the civil war.“We do not share this position for one simple reason −this again means that those who declare this recognition stand wholly on the side of one political power in a civil war,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters.“This again means that those who support this decision support a policy of isolation -- in this case, isolation of the forces represented in Tripoli,” Mr. Lavrow said.“We traditionally reject isolation as a method for resolving political problems in any conflict.”US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the recognition of the rebels on Friday, when she was in Turkey for a meeting of an international contact group on Libya. The major diplomatic step could possibly unblock billions of dollars in frozen Libyan funds.Additional cash would be crucial to the rebels’ faltering campaign to end the 41-year rule of Muammar Qaddafi, who has so far resisted a nearly four-month NATO bombing campaign.Mr. Lavrov also dismissed Western media speculation that Russia is now ready to offer political asylum to Colonel Qaddafi and his closest family.“This question has been asked many time before, and the answer is no,” Mr. Lavrov said.Russia abstained from a vote on a UN Security Council resolution in March that opened the way for air strikes on Qaddafi regime targets in Libya and has since criticized the scale and intent of the NATO-led Western campaign.A Kremlin envoy has since met with top Libyan rebels in their stronghold city of Benghazi and conducted negotiations in Tripoli over the terms of Colonel Qaddafi’s potential exile.Hmmmmm........What's the role of Iran and Turkey in this?Read the full story here.

  • PA slams plan for settlement construction.(Ynet).Palestinians say state's plan to build 6,900 housing units across country, including 336 in West Bank settlements, is another reason to appeal to UN. The Palestinian Authority slammed Israel's newest plan to build housing units beyond the Green Line, saying that the measure is yet another reason to appeal to the United Nations for recognition of a Palestinian state. Meanwhile Ynet learned Monday that Defense Minister Ehud Barak attempted to reach an agreement with Binyamin Regional Council that would prevent the razing of three permanent structures in the West Bank outpost of Migron.Barak met with Council head Avi Roeh two weeks ago, and asked him if he had any other solutions that would prevent a forced eviction of the structures, in accordance with a High Court injunction, but the meeting ended without an agreement.PA spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said of the construction plans, "The actions and decision of (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu's government are disgraceful and invalid. The Israeli government's entire policy of settling on Palestinian lands is unacceptable because it is illegal." Aiming to alleviate the national housing shortage, the Construction and Housing Ministry issued on Monday a tender for the construction of 6,900 housing units across the country – including 336 units in the West Bank settlements Beitar Illit and Karnei Shomron. "This decision is another reason for us to turn to the Security Council to ask for recognition of a Palestinian state, and to achieve full membership in the UN," Abu Rudeina told the Palestinian news agency WAFA in a statement. Abu Rudeina called on the international community to "take responsibility and to announce clear stances on Israel's settlement policy, which not only harms the Israeli-Arab peace process, but also peace in the entire world."Fatah also spoke out against the measure, saying that Netanyahu's government "insists on building settlements and destroying peace in the region, thus rejecting the calm and stability." "The Israeli decision to continue building in the occupied territories backs the Palestinian leadership's intention to turn to the UN," the movement said in a statement. According to Fatah, "Israel alone will bear the responsibility for blocking the peace process with its total violation of international law and its insistence to continue with… settlement, land confiscation and the Judaization of the holy city (Jerusalem)."Meanwhile a senior official from the Syrian foreign ministry announced Monday that his country "recognizes a Palestinian state along the 1967 lines with eastern Jerusalem as its capital, based on legitimate Palestinian rights." The official told a local news agency that "Syria intends to treat the PLO offices in Damascus as an official embassy from now on." According to the report, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas praised the Syrian announcement.Hmmmmm.......Also sprach The 'Reformer' Assad.Read the full story here.

  • "Come to the 'Dark' Side?Morality police hit Tehran streets.(Ynet).(Video) Iran's special police unit commences annual campaign to uphold Islamic dress code in country, leading to arrests, fines for not wearing hijab headscarf, nail polish, sandals. Iran's morality police unit commenced its annual campaign last month to uphold the Islamic dress code and raise "moral security" in the streets of Tehran, leading to many arrests and fines. Local media published pictures of police men and women belonging to the "chastity squads" who detained for questioning women who were not wearing their traditional hijab headscarf properly. Some women were arrested and taken to police stations across the city until they could post bail. The authorities went as far as to fine some of the 'sinners' for their behavior. Iranian citizens, and especially Iranian women, are not always willing to obey police orders to "improve appearance," causing great conflicts between both sides. The morality police unit, consisting of some 70,000 officers, searches through major Iranian cities issuing warnings and reports to citizens."The police will operate legally when it comes to public figures such as models," said the unit's chief.Ever since Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came into power in 2005, police have intensified enforcement against men, women, clothing shops and barber shops which go against the regime's Islamic code. Every year thousands of citizens, and especially woman and adolescents, are arrested during similar campaigns. Hmmmm........Perhaps give Iran another seat on Women rights?Read the full story here.

  • Indian woman turns bomb-making husband to police.(Yahoo).An Indian state government plans to reward a woman after she turned in her bomb-making husband to the police, the local chief minister said on Monday.Officers in the western state of Gujarat, the scene of serial blasts in 2008, arrested Sahazad Rangrez on Sunday and recovered eight live bombs from his possession, state chief minister Narendra Modi said. The woman turned in her husband after India's financial hub Mumbai was hit by serial blasts in which 19 people died and more than 130 were injured. No group has claimed responsibility for the Mumbai attacks but suspicion has fallen on the domestic Islamist group the Indian Mujahideen.Rangrez's wife Reshma reported him to the police after suffering domestic violence, she told reporters in Ahmedabad city, where she lives in the working class district of Danilimda. She said she was fed up with her husband's habit of smuggling explosives and home-made weapons."Even if my life is destroyed I don't care (but) I am happy that I could save other lives... I do not mind my husband going to jail," she added."How can I sit and see him do such an illegal act?" Reshma said.Chief minister Modi tweeted that his administration would "felicitate brave Reshma with a prize of 25,000 rupees ($556) for exposing her husband in the national interest".Fifty-seven people were killed and more than 200 others were injured in a string of bombings on July 26, 2008 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat's largest city.Read the full story here.

  • Taliban Video Shows Execution of 16 Pakistanis.(NYTimes).ISLAMABAD — Taliban insurgents have released a video showing them killing 16 Pakistani men who were captured in a raid in a restive northwestern province last month, a spokesman for the Pakistani military said on Monday. The graphic video shows the 16 men, most of whom appear to be Pakistani policemen, standing in a line with their hands tied behind their backs. Four insurgents stand in front, holding assault rifles, with their faces covered by scarves. One insurgent makes a brief speech in Pashto, the language spoken in the country’s northwest, accusing the men of killing six children in the Swat district. “These are the enemies of Islam who originated from Pakistan,” he says, according to a translation of the statement posted by The Long War Journal, a Web site that specializes in reports on militancy. The speaker in the video describes the 16 men as “murtards,” or those who have abandoned Islam. “They are the Pakistani police, soldiers, and their supporters who recently lined up six kids in Swat and shot them execution-style,” the insurgent says. “These Pakistanis are now our captives, and we will avenge the death of the children by doing the same to them.” A quick burst of gunfire follows. The men fall to the ground, and some can be heard moaning. Then an insurgent approaches them one by one and fires rounds into each man who appears to still be alive. Another person, holding a video camera, films the execution and walks up and down capturing images of the victims. The video runs 5 minutes 36 seconds in all. No Taliban group has yet publicly claimed responsibility for the video, which was first shown on the LiveLeak video-sharing Web site. Pakistani officials said last month that hundreds of Taliban insurgents had crossed into the country over the border from Afghanistan and on June 1 attacked a police post in Barawal, a village surrounded by rugged mountains and forests in the Shaltalo area of Upper Dir, a district in northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province. Shaltalo is near the border with Kunar Province, Afghanistan. At least 28 Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed in two days of fighting there, while at least 45 Taliban fighters were killed.Pakistan lodged a protest with the Afghan government after the attack in Upper Dir. As Pakistan battles a bloody Taliban insurgency, videos of summary killings have surfaced from both sides of the conflict. Last year, an Internet video emerged that showed men in Pakistani military uniforms killing six young men, apparently in Swat, where the military had begun an operation to drive out the Taliban. The Pakistani military denied that the video was authentic. Hmmmmmm..........Islam the religion of peace.Read the full story here.

  • Putin's model army: The beautiful women pledging to strip to ensure victory in the Presidential race.(DailyMail).Girls launch racy online video asking other fans to disrobe for strong man Vlad (and win an iPad2).He's already known as the hard man of the homeland. But Vladimir Putin's virility is set to be blown even further sky high with the launch of a new online campaign.A bevy of Russian beauties, calling themselves Putin's Army, are getting ready to strip off as they bid to get their hero back into the Kremlin as President. The provocative platoon's first mission has been to launch a competition called 'I'll tear [my clothes off] for Putin'.The trio of girls who appear in the slick video invite others to shoot their own - for the chance of winning an iPad2.The sample, uploaded to the blog of parliamentarian Kirill Shchitov, from Putin's ruling United Russia party, shows blonde student Diana strutting along Moscow's streets in high heels and a black suit.'I'm just crazy about a man who changed our country,' she purrs, as the camera frequently hovers over her bust. She adds: 'He's a great politician, and an amazing man. He's Vladimir Putin.''He is adored by millions, but there are some people who throw mud at him - maybe because they are afraid, maybe because they are weak and because they will never take his place.Later in the video, she meets two equally attractive friends sunbathing by the riverbank.Pouting, they daub 'I'll tear for Putin' onto skimpy T-shirts in red lipstick, with the video ending as one rips her top off. They then ask other 'young, smart and beautiful' girls to 'tear off something for Putin' and post a video of it online. The Putin Army's homepage on a Russian social networking site is dominated by a photograph of Mr Putin in a bright-red lounge suit and wearing a pair of aviator sunglasses.Putin, who has not yet declared whether he will run for the post next year, stepped aside in 2008 because of the two-term constitutional limit. But he is still seen as more powerful than President Dmitry Medvedev.Hmmmmm........The Russian version of the 'Obama girl'?Read the full story here.

  • And now for something completely different.Sunken 19th Century Schooner Found Intact In Lake Ontario(Video).(Irishweatheronline).Underwater explorers have released images of a Canadian schooner which sank during a storm on Lake Ontario more than a century ago.Queen of the Lakes, which was built in 1853, was carrying 480 tons of coal when it set off from Rochester, New York, for the Canadian port town of Kingston in November 1906. The vessel’s sinking in one of North America’s Great Lakes occurred when it sprung a leak during a storm.Explorers who discovered the wreck this week said that the ship’s wood is still preserved thanks to the frigid waters of Lake Ontario. They added that the anchor and steering wheel, as well as cables that held the mast in place have survived the 105 years beneath the water. The exploration team was lead by Jim Kennard has helped locate more than 20 shipwrecks in and around the Great Lakes since the early seventies. He has also contributed to the discovery of 180 other wrecks in the Great Lakes, New York’s Finger Lakes, the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.Jim Kennard has been diving and exploring the lakes in the northeast since 1970. He has found over 200 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain, NY Finger Lakes and in the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers over the past 35 years. Using his background as an electrical engineer, he built the side scan sonar system that located many of these shipwrecks in the past.Read and see the full story here.

  • Latest Update.Meltdown threat rises at Japanese nuclear plant.SOMA, Japan – Water levels dropped precipitously Monday inside a stricken Japanese nuclear reactor, twice leaving the uranium fuel rods completely exposed and raising the threat of a meltdown, hours after a hydrogen explosion tore through the building housing a different reactor.Water levels were restored after the first decrease but the rods remained exposed late Monday night after the second episode, increasing the risk of the spread of radiation and the potential for an eventual meltdown. The cascading troubles in the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant compounded the immense challenges faced by the Tokyo government, already struggling to send relief to hundreds of thousands of people along the country's quake- and tsunami-ravaged coast where at least 10,000 people are believed to have died.Later, a top Japanese official said the fuel rods in all three of the most troubled nuclear reactors appeared to be melting.Of all these troubles, the drop in water levels at Unit 2 had officials the most worried."Units 1 and 3 are at least somewhat stabilized for the time being," said Nuclear and Industrial Agency official Ryohei Shiomi "Unit 2 now requires all our effort and attention."Late Monday, the chief government spokesman said there were signs that the fuel rods were melting in all three reactors, all of which had lost their cooling systems in the wake of Friday's massive earthquake and tsunami"Although we cannot directly check it, it's highly likely happening," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters. Some experts would consider that a partial meltdown. Others, though, reserve that term for times when nuclear fuel melts through a reactor's innermost chamber but not through the outer containment shell.Officials held out the possibility that, too, may be happening."It's impossible to say whether there has or has not been damage" to the vessels, nuclear agency official Naoki Kumagai said.If a complete reactor meltdown — where the uranium core melts through the outer containment shell — were to occur, a wave of radiation would be released, resulting in major, widespread health problems.Hmmm....And tomorrow the wind turns landinwards over Japan, pray that God have mercy on them.Read the full story here.

  • Update.Water level near empty at Japan nuclear reactor.Water levels inside a quake-stricken Japanese nuclear reactor were almost empty on Monday night, said the power plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co. The Yomiuri newspaper was reporting that the cooling system at the reactor has stopped, and additional reports said fuel rods were exposed. News agency Jiji said a meltdown of fuel rods inside the Fukushima Daiichi complex's No.2 reactor could not be ruled out.A meltdown raises the risk of damage to the reactor vessel and a possible radioactive leak, experts say.Earlier, a hydrogen blast at Japan's earthquake-stricken nuclear plant did not damage its primary containment vessel, the UN nuclear agency said. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it was told by Japanese nuclear authorities the control room of the unit No. 3 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant remained operational, following Friday's massive earthquake and tsunami."The reactor building exploded but the primary containment vessel was not damaged. The control room of unit 3 remains operational," the IAEA said in a statement.A Japanese official said before the blast 22 people had been confirmed to have suffered radiation contamination and up to 190 may have been exposed. Workers in protective clothing used hand-held scanners to check people arriving at evacuation centers.US warships and planes helping with relief efforts moved away from the coast temporarily because of low-level radiation. The US Seventh Fleet described the move as precautionary.Broadcaster NHK, quoting a police official, said more than 10,000 people may have been killed as the wall of water triggered by Friday's 8.9-magnitude quake surged across the coastline, reducing whole towns to rubble. It was the biggest to have hit the quake-prone country since it started keeping records 140 years ago."I would like to believe that there still are survivors," said Masaru Kudo, a soldier dispatched to Rikuzentakata, a nearly flattened town of 24,500 people in far-northern Iwate prefecture.Kyodo said 80,000 people had been evacuated from a 20-km (12-mile) radius around the stricken nuclear plant, joining more than 450,000 other evacuees from quake and tsunami-hit areas in the northeast of the main island Honshu.Read and see the full story here.

  • Update On 14.03.2011 at 04:25 GMT+2  - from :Emergency and Disaster Information Service.
A hydrogen explosion occurred Monday morning at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant’s troubled No. 3 reactor, the government’s nuclear safety agency said. The 11:01 a.m. incident came after a hydrogen explosion hit the No. 1 reactor at the same plant Saturday, and prompted the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency to urge residents within a 20-kilometer radius to take shelter inside buildings. It also followed a report by Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant’s operator, to the government earlier in the day that the radiation level at the plant had again exceeded the legal limit and pressure in the container of the No. 3 reactor had increased. The Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant has been shut down since a magnitude 9.0 quake struck northeastern and eastern Japan on Friday, but some of its reactors have lost their cooling functions, leading to brief rises in the radiation level over the weekend. On Monday, radiation at the plant’s premises rose over the benchmark limit of 500 micro sievert per hour at two locations, measuring 751 micro sievert at the first location at 2:20 a.m. and 650 at the second at 2:40 a.m., according to the report. The hourly amounts are more than half the 1,000 micro sievert to which people are usually exposed in one year.

The maximum level detected so far around the plant is 1,557.5 micro sievert logged Sunday. The utility had been pouring seawater into the plant’s No. 1 and No. 3 reactors to help cool their cores, which are believed to have partially melted after part of the fuel rods were no longer covered by coolant water when levels fell following the quake. The seawater injection stopped around 1 a.m. due to the shortage of water left in tanks, but resumed for No. 3 reactor at 3:20 a.m., according to the nuclear safety agency. The halt of coolant water injection apparently caused rising pressure in the reactor container and an increase in the radiation level at the plant, the agency said. TEPCO at one point planned to release radioactive steam from the No. 3 reactor container to depressurize it and ordered workers to vacate the site. But as the pressure later lowered, workers resumed operations at the site, according to the agency. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said pressure in the No. 1 reactor container has been stable and seawater injection for the reactor will resume later.Hmmmm.....How about reactor number 2?Full update history here.

  • UPDATE:Japan earthquake: Meltdown alert at Fukushima reactor.Technicians are battling to stabilise a third reactor at a quake-stricken Japanese nuclear plant, after the latest explosion to rock the facility.Fukushima Daiichi plant's operators said they could not rule out a fuel rod meltdown, after a cooling system broke. They are frantically injecting more water into reactor 2 after its fuel rods became almost fully exposed.A cooling system breakdown preceded explosions at the plant's reactor 3 on Monday and reactor 1 on Saturday. The latest explosion, said to have been caused by a hydrogen build-up, injured 11 people, one of them seriously, and sent a huge column of smoke billowing into the air.The fuel rod exposure at Fukushima Daiichi number 2 reactor is potentially the most serious event so far at the plant.A local government official confirmed the fuel rods were at one point largely, if not totally exposed; but we do not know for how long.Without coolant around the rods, temperatures can rise to hundreds of degrees Celsius, almost certainly resulting in some melting. This opens the possibility of a serious meltdown - where molten, highly radioactive reactor core falls through the floor of the containment vessel and into the ground underneath. However, engineers appear to have restored some water flow into the reactor vessel and if they are successful, temperatures will begin to fall again rapidly. • Military Crew Said to Be Exposed to Radiation, but Officials Call Risk in U.S. Slight. The Pentagon was expected to announce that the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, which is sailing in the Pacific, passed through a radioactive cloud from stricken nuclear reactors in Japan, causing crew members on deck to receive a month’s worth of radiation in about an hour, government officials said Sunday. The officials added that American helicopters flying missions about 60 miles north of the damaged reactors became coated with particulate radiation that had to be washed off. There was no indication that any of the military personnel had experienced ill effects from the exposure. (Everyone is exposed to a small amount of natural background radiation.) But the episodes showed that the prevailing winds were picking up radioactive material from crippled reactors in northeastern Japan. Ever since an earthquake struck Japan on Friday, the authorities worldwide have been laying plans to map where radioactive plumes might blow and determine what, if any, danger they could pose to people. Blogs were churning with alarm. But officials insisted that unless the quake-damaged nuclear plants deteriorated into full meltdown, any radiation that reached the United States would be too weak to do any harm.Washington had “hypothetical plots” for worst-case plume dispersal within hours of the start of the crisis, a senior official said Sunday. The aim, the official added, was “more to help Japan” than the United States, since few experts foresaw high levels of radiation reaching the West Coast. For now, the prevailing winds over Japan were blowing eastward across the Pacific. If they continue to do so, international stations for radioactive tracking at Wake or Midway Islands might detect radiation later this week, said Annika Thunborg, a spokeswoman for an arm of the United Nations in Vienna that monitors the planet for spikes in radioactivity. “At this point, we have not picked up anything” in detectors midway between Japan and Hawaii, Ms. Thunborg said in an interview on Sunday. “We’re talking a couple of days — nothing before Tuesday — in terms of picking something up.”On Sunday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it expected no “harmful levels of radioactivity” to move on the winds to Hawaii, Alaska or the West Coast from the reactors in Japan, “given the thousands of miles between the two countries.” In interviews, some private nuclear experts called a windborne threat unlikely. Others urged caution. “We’re all worrying about it,” said Robert Alvarez, a nuclear expert who, from 1993 to 1999, was a policy adviser to the secretary of energy, who runs the nation’s nuclear complex. “It’s going to be very important,” he added, “for the Japanese and U.S. authorities to inform the public about the nature of the plumes and any need for precautionary measures.” While federal officials expected little danger in the United States from Japanese plumes, they were taking no chances. On Sunday, Energy Department officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the agency was working on three fronts. One main player is the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. Officials said they had activated its National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center, which draws on meteorologists, nuclear scientists and computer scientists to forecast plume dispersal.“We’re on top of this,” a department official said.Hmmm......"Prepare for the worst, pray for the best"?Read the full story here.

  • Navy Says 17 Americans Were Treated for Contamination.WASHINGTON — American Navy officials in Japan said early Monday that 17 military personnel who had been aboard three helicopters assisting in the earthquake relief effort had been exposed to low levels of contamination.Cmdr. Jeff A. Davis, a spokesman for the American Seventh Fleet in Japan, said the Navy personnel — who apparently had flown through a radioactive plume from a damaged nuclear power plant — had been ordered to dispose of their uniforms and to undergo a decontamination scrub that had successfully removed radioactive particles. “They received very, very low levels of contamination,” Commander Davis said in a telephone interview from Japan early Monday. “It certainly is not cause for alarm,” he said. “It is something we have to watch very carefully and make sure we are able to monitor, and to mitigate against this environmental hazard.” The Navy personnel aboard the three helicopters had received the equivalent of one month’s natural background radiation from the sun, rocks or soil, he said.Hmmmm......Helicopter...it's not harmfull...but we moved the aircraft carrier who's so much further?Read the full story here.

  • Japan - Monster aftershock could strike within days.NORTH-EASTERN Japan can expect another monster earthquake large enough to trigger a tsunami within days, the head of the Australian Seismological Centre says. The director, Kevin McCue, said there had been more than 100 smaller quakes since Friday, but a larger aftershock was likely.''Normally they happen within days,'' he said. ''The rule of thumb is that you would expect the main aftershock to be one magnitude smaller than the main shock, so you would be expecting a 7.9. ''That's a monster again in its own right that is capable of producing a tsunami and more damage.''The US Geological Survey estimated the quake moved the Japanese coast about 2.4 metres.''It basically pushed the sea floor up and down on opposite sides of the fault by 10 metres, causing the tsunami,'' Dr McCue said. ''It is a sudden rupture that has occurred, but it has occurred because the two plates are converging at about eight centimetres a year and have been for about 100 years. That eight metres is released suddenly when the plate snaps and breaks and produces the earthquake.''A seismology research fellow at the University of Melbourne, Gary Gibson, said the world averages one magnitude 8 quake a year, but the rate was inconsistent. The 1980s and 1990s had far fewer large quakes than average, for example.''There is more variation than you would expect from a random occurrence of earthquakes, and we really don't have a mechanism to describe why that is the case,'' Dr Gibson said. ''But there is no question that the last two years have been very active and well above average.''Hmmmm......Any links to the coming" Supermoon" are not proven .....yet!Read the full story here.

  • Japan : 2nd explosion at stricken Japan nuclear plant.SOMA, Japan – The second hydrogen explosion in three days rocked Japan's stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant Monday, sending a massive column of smoke into the air and wounding 11 workers. Hours later, the U.S. said it had shifted its offshore forces away from the plant after detecting low-level radioactive contamination. The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan was about 100 miles (160 kilometers) offshore when it detected the radiation, which U.S. officials said was about the same as one month's normal exposure to natural background radiation. It was not clear if the radiation had leaked during the Monday explosion.Yeah! That blast was felt 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, but the plant's operator said radiation levels at the reactor were still within legal limits.Operators knew an explosion was a possibility as they struggled to reduce pressure inside the reactor containment vessel, but apparently felt they had no choice if they wanted to avoid a complete meltdown. In the end, the hydrogen in the released steam mixed with oxygen in the atmosphere and set off the blast.Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the plant, said radiation levels at Unit 3 were well under the levels where a nuclear operator must file a report to the government. On Saturday, a similar explosion took place at the plant's Unit 1, injuring four workers and causing mass evacuations.Shortly after the Monday explosion, Tokyo Electric warned it had lost the ability to cool Unit 2. Takako Kitajima, a company official, said plant workers were preparing to inject seawater into the unit to cool the reactor, a move that could lead to an explosion there as well.Hmmmm....Sounds more and more like a Chernobyl II ,what will happen if the second unit also explodes and all this is followed by a 7.9 earthquake?Read the full story here.

  • Hell on Earth: I've seen 20 wars. But nothing prepared me for this... nothing prepared me for the sight of a town reduced to a morass of splintered wood, jagged concrete and twisted metal where 10,000 have died. The first thing you notice is the silence which seems to hang over the place. There is no sound as we approach this once-thriving coastal town. Driving round the final bend in the mountain road before making the descent into Minami Sanriku, nothing can quite prepare you for the sight of such destruction. In my 30 years as a war correspondent I have covered more than 20 conflicts and several major earthquakes, but I have never seen anything on this scale. One minute you are passing through towns and villages completely untouched by natural disaster – not even a pane missing from the windows – and then as you turn the corner it hits you.The most astonishing view stretches out below towards the sea for at least four miles. An entire town of around 17,000 people has simply ceased to exist here.At least 95 per cent of the buildings are not merely ruined; they have been reduced to a morass of splintered wood, jagged concrete and twisted metal. All of this is hideously decorated with the details of destroyed family lives: a woman smiles up from her wedding photographs, a smashed guitar lies in the debris. I see a broken doll, and pages from a child’s school exercise book.Hmmm.......No words can express the 'damage' seen in these pictures.Read and see the full story here.

The objective of the document is to provide guidance to other Federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and to state and local governments regarding the safe and effective use of potassium iodide (KI) as an adjunct to other public health protective measures in the event that radioactive iodine is released into the environment. The adoption and implementation of the recommendations are at the discretion of the state and local governments responsible for developing regional emergency-response plans related to radiation emergencies. The recommendations in the guidance address KI dosage and the projected radiation exposure at which the drug should be used. This guidance updates FDA’s 1982 recommendations.MFS : If you're a gardener and there's radioactive contamination DESTROY all your vegetable plants in your garden!Do not burn them!Don't use milk from the farm as long as the radiation persists in these region where the cows graze!Any animal grazing can be contaminated ,don't eat mushrooms growing in the wild!Read the full story here.

  • Obama 'regime'criticizes Israeli settlement construction plan.JERUSALEM (AP) -- The U.S. Embassy said Monday it was "deeply concerned" by Israeli plans to build hundreds of new homes in West Bank settlements, calling the Israeli enclaves "illegitimate" and an obstacle to resuming direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians. In a defiant response to a deadly attack on a settler family over the weekend, Israel swiftly approved the construction of between 300 and 500 new homes in major West Bank settlement blocks. Jewish settlement construction is at the crux of the current impasse in peace efforts."They murder, we build," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday during a condolence call to the grieving family. Palestinian militants are presumed to have carried out the assault.A senior Israeli official responded to the U.S. criticism by reasserting Israel's expectation that the major settlement blocs, where most of the 300,000 West Bank settlers live, will remain in Israeli hands under any final peace accord."There is no contradiction in building inside existing blocs and the desire to move ahead in peace and for a solution of two states for two peoples," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the U.S. response on the record. An additional 200,000 settlers live in east Jerusalem, captured along with the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war. • Finally, British workers come first: Jobs for migrants slashed by half in visa clampdown. Finally, British workers come first: Jobs for migrants slashed by half in visa clampdown. The number of jobs open to migrants from outside the European Union is to be halved, ministers will announce today. Foreigners are currently able to obtain work permits for around 500,000 posts that bosses say cannot be filled by British or EU workers. But from April that will fall to 230,000 when non-graduate jobs are taken off the Home Office ‘shortage occupation list’.Non-EU beauty salon managers, estate agents, florists, pipe fitters, steel erectors and welders will be among those barred. The Home Office has commissioned an expert review of all the remaining categories on the list. If the Migration Advisory Committee finds there are enough unemployed British workers with the required skills, tens of thousands more posts could be closed.Ministers want to ensure that priority access to Britain’s labour market is granted only where there are real skills shortages.Immigration minister Damian Green said the Government was determined to cut dole queues and make sure migrants were not the ‘first resort’ for firms with vacancies. Firms looking to fill jobs which appear on the shortage list do not have to advertise to British workers first, and applicants do not have to meet an earnings test.Last week, Mr Green attacked Labour for failing to impose controls on Eastern European workers when the EU expanded in 2004. He said the ‘mistake’ would never be repeated and much tougher restrictions would apply in future.More than 1.15million Eastern European workers have signed up to the Home Office’s worker registration scheme. Mr Green said the job categories listed as skilled under Tier 2 will be cut from 192 to 121. Midwives, chartered surveyors and management accountants stay on the approved list.Officials estimate around 65 per cent of the 8,400 work permits issued last year to workers on the shortage list would not have qualified under the new rules.Hmmmmm........"Change" and it's not the Obama kind of change.Read the full story here.

  • Foreign bloggers vow to report other angles.Among the unfamiliar faces that arrived at the West Bank settlement of Itamar following the massacre of the Fogel family were members of a group of American and Canadian bloggers who arrive in the Holy Land upon an invitation from the Foreign Ministry, and sought to cover the Israel beat from an angle that is different from that of the foreign media. On Sunday night, Minister of Information and Diaspora Yuli Edelstein released the graphic photographs of the bodies of the three Fogel children, who were murdered Saturday. Former Minister Isaac Herzog disagreed with Edelstein's decision, saying it "weakens" Israel. "The decision to publish the photos broadcasts panic and leads to disrespect for the grief," he said. The fact that the photos are being published right after Israel announced the approval of more construction in the West Bank "creates confusion", he added.Chuck DeVore of California noted that the international media prioritized coverage of the Tsunami in Japan and the unrest in Libya over the terrorist attack on Itamar. DeVore explained that Israel is depicted around the world as Goliath, while the Palestinians are presented as the underdog. He cited a Los Angeles Times article, which reported that the attack on the Fogel family came as revenge for the uprooting of olive trees and the burning of Palestinian cars by settlers. "The LA Times implied in their article that the Jews instigated their own killing," Devore later wrote in a Twitter message. He said that while the world does take notice of what goes on in Israel, he came to the country in order to report on the situation in a way that is different from that of the Western media. Claire Berlinski, an American Jew who lives in Istanbul, Turkey called on the Israeli government to take a more aggressive approach towards the publicizing the attack. She said that releasing powerful material, such as the photographs of the attack victims' bodies, to the international media will help change the attitude that prevails in the international community towards Jews. The bloggers' host in Judea and Samaria, David Ha'ivry, stated that he would have preferred to receive the group during "normal days," in order to show them Samaria's thriving development, education and agriculture fields. "It's good that they saw that the settlers are not Satan, as the foreign media presents them, and sometimes as the Israeli media presents them, as well," he added. Ha'ivry, who directs the Samaria Liaison Office, said he contemplated releasing the pictures of the slain children, and finally decided to do so after the pictures were approved for publication. "If the heads of the state acted responsibly, we would not have needed such abject means of justifying ourselves to the world."Hmmmm.....Anyone with no prejudice in his heart doesn't need a visit to know the truth!Read the full story here.

  • HT:TranslatingJihad.Hamas Praises Savage Attack on Jewish Settlers in Arabic, Denies Responsibility in English. The barbaric attack by a Palestinian Muslim on a Jewish family living in the West Bank settlement of Itamar on Saturday has been widely reported. Five innocent people--two parents and three of their children--were savagely stabbed to death in their sleep. On the English section of the website of the al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, there was only the following short statement, denying any responsibility on the part of Hamas for the attack : Palestinian National Movement Hamas official Ezzat Al-Rashak said that the movement is not responsible for the murder of the five family members from the Itamar settlement. Al-Rashak confirmed that harming children is not part of Hamas' policy, nor is it the policy of the resistance factions. He also confirmed that the possibility that the incident was carried out by settlers for criminal motives should not be ruled out. [emphasis added].But on the Arabic section of the website, an article was published praising the attacker as a 'mujahid' and deriding the slain Jews as "Zionist usurpers." What's worse, at the time I checked there were 34 comments on the article posted by readers, all praising the attack and the attacker (I translated the first 17 or so). Curiously, while the Hamas statement in the English article raised the possibility of the act being carried out by settlers, in the Arabic article there's no doubt that the attacker was a Palestinian 'mujahid'.Keep in mind that this is the same Hamas that CAIR refuses to condemn : Five Zionists Killed in Stabbing in the Usurper (Settlement) of Itamar .al-Qassam, 12 March 2011 .Five Zionist usurpers were killed the morning of Saturday, 12 March 2011, in a knife-stabbing carried out by a Palestinian in the usurper (settlement) of Itamar east of the city of Nablus. Our correspondent in Nablus reported that a Palestinian mujahid was able to break into the usurper (settlement) of "Itamar" south of Nablus in the occupied (West) Bank, and stabbed five Zionist usurpers. Zionist media sources said that "A Palestinian broke into the usurper (settlement) between the hours of 9:30 - 11:00 PM, and killed five usurpers from one family while they were sleeping." They confirmed that the perpetrator of the act was able to escape. Powerful forces from the Zionist military and police arrived at the location, including the chief of staff of the Army, Benny Gantz, and the head of (Israeli) Central Command, Avi Mizrahi.

  • Turkey second largest US private arms buyer in Mideast in 2009.Turkey was the second largest US private arms buyer in the Middle East and North Africa in 2009, State Department figures, reported on Saturday, have revealed. The US government approved $40 billion in worldwide private arms sales in 2009, including more than $7 billion to Mideast and North African nations that are struggling with political upheaval, the State Department reported. Iraq, where US forces are still withdrawing from and the fledgling government is struggling against militants, was the biggest buyer ($1.51 billion), closely followed by Turkey ($1.50 billion) and the United Arab Emirates ($1.09 billion). Most of the biggest recipients of licensed arms deals in 2009 were US neighbors and allies, among them Japan ($4.5 billion), Britain ($3.4 billion) and South Korea ($1.9 billion). The leader in 2009 was Singapore, with $5.5 billion in approved defense buys -- largely because of a proposed $3.7 billion sale of American aircraft, supplies and logistics support. The State Department figures do not describe details of the sale, but Singapore has made repeated buys of US F-15 fighter jets in recent years, totaling 24 jets. The $7.3 billion in US-approved defense sales to Mideast and North African countries in 2009 totaled up to nearly a fifth of the entire $40 billion in licensed sales -- indications of both the region’s strategic importance and their governments’ willingness to pay top dollar for American defense equipment.Turkey also remains one of the largest clients of the US government in terms of arms sales. In September in 2009, the Obama administration notified Congress of a possible $7.8 billion sale of Patriot PAC-3 antimissile batteries and related gear to Turkey, a transaction that would be one of the biggest US government-to-government arms sales in years. Turkey has also sought six Predator unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and two armed versions of the Predator UAVs, also known as Reapers, last year from the US.Hmmmm.....Where's Israel in all this or is he really that obvious in his hatred towards Israel?Turkey the biggest violator of human rights gets the most weapons from Obama? That might be worth another Nobel peace price?Read the full story here.

Franks implored the Obama Administration to take an “offensive approach” against religious intolerance and “draw a line in the sand to distinguish who is for and who is against religious freedom.”For years Ahmadiyas, Christians, Hindus, and Muslims have been denied justice under the controversial blasphemy laws which both Punjab Governor Salman Taseer and Shahbaz Bhatti worked to amend, and both were killed.Tina Ramirez, Director of Government Relations at the Becket Fund, who collaborated with Congressman Franks’ office on House Resolution 141 said, “Congress is finally recognizing the dangerous nexus between Pakistan’s blasphemy laws and international advocacy for ‘defamation’ resolutions that defend the harmful effects of those laws on innocent lives. It is inexcusable that the international community has allowed these deaths to occur instead of standing behind the men who were willing to die for the freedom their country and the UN system was intended to protect.”House Resolution 141 calls for a UN Human Rights Council resolution in honor of Taseer and Bhatti’s “courage in defense of core principles of Pakistan’s democracy, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”Based in Washington, D.C., The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty is a non-profit, public-interest law firm dedicated to protecting the free expression of all religious traditions all over the world. • Pilots lock down cockpit over tefillin. An Orthodox Jewish prayer observance by three passengers aboard an Alaska Airlines flight on Sunday alarmed flight attendants unfamiliar with the ritual, prompting them to lock down the cockpit and issue a security alert, officials said. Alaska Flight 241 from Mexico City to Los Angeles International Airport landed safety at LAX and was met by fire crews, foam trucks, FBI agents, Transportation Security Administration personnel and police dispatched as a precaution. The three passengers had startled members of the cabin crew with what what was interpreted as suspicious behavior shortly after takeoff, airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said. "The three passengers were praying aloud in Hebrew and were wearing what appeared to be leather straps on their foreheads and arms," she said. "This appeared to be a security threat, and the pilots locked down the flight deck and followed standard security procedures."It turned out the passengers were engaged in the wearing of tefillin - small, black prayer boxes containing scripture that devout Jews bind to their foreheads and arms with black leather straps in a daily ritual accompanied by special prayers. Asked about the authorities' reaction to the alert, Eimiller said: "We're obligated, of course, to respond when the flight calls us to clear up concerns." Sources said that invitations were sent out on Thursday afternoon for the Monday night screening. Members of the Israeli delegation to the UN said the decision to screen a feature film in the General Assembly hall – especially such a dramatically pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli film – was a “horrible” one. The decision seems to have been made unilaterally by Switzerland’s Joseph Deiss, the General Assembly’s president. Messages to his spokesperson left by the Post Sunday were not returned. Here is the plot from Wikipedia (it's actually based on a true story, which has been propagandized). Well, let's start with Hind Husseini. Does the name sound familiar? I thought it might. She was the sister of Haj al-Amin al-Husseini, the Mufti of Jerusalem and a collaborator with Hitler. Israel's Government Press Office 'dumbfounded, astonished'.Israel is demanding an apology from CNN over its coverage of Saturday's terrorist attack in Itamar claiming it was "tendentious and deceptive." Government Press Office director Oren Helman sent a letter to CNN's Bureau Chief Kevin Flower saying he was astonished at the network's coverage of the ruthless attack. A CNN website report avoided describing the event as a terror attack, noting that the Israel Defense Forces consider it an act of terrorism. "Only you decided to use the term terrorist attack in quotation marks, as if this were not necessarily the case," Helman wrote. "There is a limit to the extent of objectivity regarding such a horrific deed. The CNN report stated: "Five members of an Israeli family were killed in the West Bank early Saturday morning in what the Israeli military is calling a 'terror attack.'" The report went on to say: "According to a military spokeswoman, an intruder entered the Israeli settlement of Itamar near the northern West Bank city of Nablus around 1 am, made his way into a family home and killed two parents and their three children." The IDF's official statement noted that forces were searching for a "terrorist" and not an "intruder" as the CNN report noted. • Have you been through a TSA body scanner recently? The Transportation Security Administration announced Friday that it would retest every full-body X-ray scanner that emits ionizing radiation — 247 machines at 38 airports — after maintenance records on some of the devices showed radiation levels 10 times higher than expected. The agency posted reports Friday from 127 X-ray-emitting devices on its website and said it would continue to release results from maintenance tests for the approximately 4,500 X-ray devices at airports nationwide. Those devices include machines that examine checked luggage. Of the reports posted, about a third showed some sort of error, Kimball said. The TSA announced steps to require its maintenance contractors to "retrain personnel involved in conducting and overseeing the radiation survey process."Some lawmakers remain concerned, however. The TSA "has repeatedly assured me that the machines that emit radiation do not pose a health risk," Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said in a written statement Friday. "Nonetheless, if TSA contractors reporting on the radiation levels have done such a poor job, how can airline passengers and crew have confidence in the data used by the TSA to reassure the public?""It is totally unacceptable to be bumbling such critical tasks," Chaffetz said. "These people are supposed to be protecting us against terrorists."In the past, the TSA has failed to properly monitor and ensure the safety of X-ray devices used on luggage. A 2008 report by the worker safety arm of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the TSA and its maintenance contractors had failed to detect when baggage X-ray machines emitted radiation beyond what regulations allowed. They also failed to take action when some machines had missing or disabled safety features, the report shows.Chaffetz said the TSA's characterization of the maintenance mistakes "sounds like an excuse rather than the real facts.""I'm tired of excuses," Chaffetz said. "The public has a right and deserves to know. It begs the question, 'What are they still not sharing with us?' These are things you cannot make mistakes with." Chaffetz said he expects to address some of his concerns during a hearing Wednesday.Peter Rez, a physics professor at Arizona State University, said Friday he wanted to scrutinize the 2,000 pages of reports the TSA posted. He has expressed concerns about the potential for the scanners to break and the importance of proper maintenance and monitoring. "Mechanical things break down," Rez told USA TODAY in December. Rez also has voiced fears about the potential for a passenger to get an excessive dose of radiation or even a radiation burn if the X-ray scanning beam were to malfunction and stop on one part of a person's body for an extended period of time.He said Friday that the contractor mistakes TSA identified only heighten his concerns.Hmmmm......Do you want any Potassium Iodine against radiation sickness with that scan?Read the full story here.

  • And now for something completely different.Has the real lost city of Atlantis finally been found... buried under mud flats in Spain? It has remained a tantalising mystery for thousands of years, but now a U.S. led research team believes it has found the legendary lost city of Atlantis. They claim to have pinpointed the exact location of the metropolis under mud flats in southern Spain. The team of archaeologists and geologists are convinced that Atlantis -swamped by a tsunami - is submerged just north of Cadiz.Professor Richard Freund of the University of Hartford, Connecticut, who lead the international team, said: 'This is the power of tsunamis.'It is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles inland, and that's pretty much what we're talking about.'The team used a satellite photo of a suspected submerged city to find the site then surveyed it with a combination of deep-ground radar, digital mapping, and underwater technology.Buried in the vast marshlands of the Dona Ana Park they found a strange series of 'memorial cities,' built in Atlantis' image by the refugees who fled the destructive tsunami.Atlantis residents who did not die built new cities inland, claimed Freund. The team's findings will be unveiled on Sunday in 'Finding Atlantis,' a new National Geographic Channel special.Freund said the 'twist' of finding the memorial cities makes him confident Atlantis was buried in the mud flats. He said: 'We found something that no one else has ever seen before, which gives it a layer of credibility, especially for archaeology, that makes a lot more sense.'Greek philosopher Plato wrote about Atlantis some 2,600 years ago, describing it as 'an island situated in front of the straits called the Pillars of Hercules.'These pillars were known as the Straits of Gibraltar in bygone times.Using Plato's detailed account of Atlantis as a map, searches have focused on the Mediterranean and Atlantic as the best possible sites for the city.Freund says tsunamis in the region have been documented for centuries with one of the largest reported in November 1755 hitting Lisbon with a 10-story tidal wave.Debate about whether Atlantis truly existed has lasted for thousands of years. Plato's 'dialogues' from around 360 B.C. are the only known historical sources of information about the iconic city. Plato said the island he called Atlantis 'in a single day and night... disappeared into the depths of the sea.'Experts plan further excavations at the site where they believe Atlantis is and at the mysterious 'cities' in central Spain 150 miles away to more closely study geological formations and to date artefacts.Hmmmm......Read the full story here.

  • Obama’s war on democracy.President’s campaign forces seize Wisconsin statehouse.Message to Wisconsin taxpayers: President Obama and the Democratic National Committee have declared war on you. Message to other states: You’re next. The political unrest in Wisconsin, billed as some kind of grass-roots uprising, is being organized and directed by Barack Obama‘s Organizing for America and the Democratic National Committee. This development is consistent with Mr. Obama‘s instructions for supporters to “get in the face” of those who oppose them, but in this case, they are seeking to derail a lawful legislative process. That the protesters speak in a different voice can be seen in the signs they carry. Many compare Mr. Walker to Hitler, Mussolini or Hosni Mubarak. One placard had the slogan “Repeal Walker” with the governor’s head in sniperscope cross hairs. This is the symbolism that Democrats recently denounced as “hate-filled rhetoric,” and it is far from the voice of the public. It is rather the voice of an entitled class that seeks by any means to stop its free ride from coming to an end.The public educators engaged in the demonstrations, many of whom earn more than $100,000 in salary and benefits, seem to think the normal rules of professional conduct do not apply to them. Many falsely called in sick to engage in self-serving political activism, apparently without fear of being disciplined. A group of Madison East High School students engaged in what a union organizer called an “unplanned walkoff” of the school grounds, but that the students said was organized truancy instigated by their teachers. These demonstrations may be dramatic and TV-friendly, but White House operatives and their union cronies are on the wrong side of history. The American people are fed up with a sense of entitlement, waste and abuse in government service. Americans in the private sector have lost jobs, been forced to take pay cuts to continue working and have reduced spending just to make ends meet. Government workers face no such jeopardy and instead enjoy automatic raises, regardless of performance. The measures causing all the ruckus in Wisconsin would require public-sector employees (excluding police and firefighters) to contribute half of their pension costs and at least 12 percent of their health care costs, which is a better deal than most Americans get. The public sector employees also would lose collective bargaining rights for anything other than pay. These are reasonable sacrifices to make in a time of fiscal crisis, and by resisting them, the demonstrators expose themselves as selfish and unreasonable. The White House and its allies have backed similar demonstrations in Ohio and Indiana, and more may be planned for other states. One can reasonably ask why Mr. Obama is spending his time seeking to undermine democratic processes in U.S. state legislatures and ignoring the pleas of Iranians trying to throw off the shackles of Islamic rule.Hmmmm.........Democracy versus Dictatorship has begun. If ever a President needed impeachment it's this one.Read the full story here.

  • Muslims Abduct Coptic Christian Woman in Egypt.Muslims broke into the home of a Coptic family this afternoon and abducted their 18-year-old daughter Nesma Sarwat. The home belongs to the building contractor who built the controversial St. Mary and St. Michael church in Talbiya, within the Omraniya neighborhood of Giza. The abductors wrote messages on the home's wall, the messages said "Islam is the solution" and "The Church has to be demolished." The abductors also wrote the names of the other family members on the wall.Neighbors heard voices, but no one saw the abductors as the whole operation took less than ten minutes and blood was found on the stairs and in the flat, reported Coptic activist Mariam Ragy of Free Coptic Voice advocacy. "I believe writing the names of the rest of the family might mean that their turn is coming," said the neighbor. The Family of the abducted woman called the security forces to the scene.Hmmmm.....Give the Muslim Brotherhood even more support Mr "Christian" President?Read the full story here.

  • HT:Examiner.Looming Government Shutdown Anarchy?By James Simpson. As the battle of the budget wages on, and the March 4th D-Day moves inexorably closer, and with the Continuing Resolution passed in the House of Representatives early this morning, including two amendments by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) to defund Obamacare, the media is increasingly raising the specter of a possible government shutdown. What every Republican, every patriot, every person conceivably affected needs to understand is how this will impact average Americans. Will airports shut down because air traffic controllers have gone on leave? Will those mean Republicans throw granny out in the street when Social Security stops sending payments? Will everyone who receives checks in the mail see their income dry up because the Post Office shuts down? Will welfare mothers have to toast rats on a spit to feed their children? The Democrats will tell you that and more. A Google search of “government shutdown” brings up pages describing dire consequences. But if you follow the links you will see that this is more a reflection of leftist web domination than anything else. The greatest consequence of a government shutdown will be the Democrat-generated media hysteria we will have to put up with unless/until they get their way. They will demagogue at every opportunity, describing fantastic scenes of nationwide anarchy. They will do what they always do, about the only thing they do well, and in fact have already begun doing : They will lie. President Obama almost immediately threatened that Social Security checks would stop coming.Let me be absolutely clear here. There will be no disruption in Social Security, welfare, civil service retirement, or any other kind of open-ended mandatory program payments. The mail will not stop because the Post Office is largely self-funding (with you know, those stamps you buy to mail things with). Air traffic controllers will not go on furlough, jets will keep flying, the Border Patrol will keep on attempting to secure the border that Janet Napolitano wants unsecured, and our military will stay in the fight, however poorly and treasonously led by the current Commander-in-Chief.Will there be adverse effects? Absolutely. We are talking about a government shutdown. But they are not the dire consequences Democrats are hyping. The only people who will really notice the government shutdown are government workers themselves, and most importantly, Congressional Democrats.Boo hoo!Notice that the CRS Report link is directly from the Democrats’ House Rules Committee website. So the Democrats know all this, but they blatantly lie about it. They have an advantage in doing this because the media relentlessly echoes their message. One possibility remains. Given his penchant for defying law and the Constitution through regulatory subterfuge, President Obama could possibly change the ground rules and crank up the pressure by actually ordering the Social Security Administration to stop sending checks. Once again, it will be incumbent on Republicans to explain that Democrats are choosing to do this. This is a critical juncture in our Nation’s history. Republicans must demonstrate some intestinal fortitude for a change. A few days ago, I posted an article demanding that Speaker Boehner put up or shut up by allowing amendments to the Continuing Resolution that would defund Obamacare. Given that the House passed the CR with such provisions, it appears he decided to put up. Speaker Boehner and House Republicans, you have the voters on your side, you have the facts on your side, and never in our history has it been more important for you to take a principled stand. Do not back down in the face of the Democrats’ government shutdown threats. We don’t want that, but if Democrats insist on continuing to trash our country, I say, “bring it on!”Hmmmm........Well spoken as a true patriot!Read the full story here.

  • HT:TheAmericanThinker.Pundits muse how Obama can save his presidency. He cannot. Obama, politically, is doomed. Republicans do not have a Reagan waiting in the wings, but that will not matter in 2012. All Republicans are attempting to don the mantle of Reagan, who has thoroughly captured in death what he could not in life, the heart of the Republican Party. This grand and overriding figure, like FDR and Lincoln, will dominate the rhetoric and policies of the Republican Party. Republicans will not commit hara-kiri in 2012.So why is Obama certain to lose, even against very ordinary Republican nominees? Food, fuel and clothing are rising in price at dramatic rates. Food, especially, is critical. Every shopping cart in every grocery is pushed by an American who finds prices for ordinary things, like bread, milk, and cereal jumping higher and higher. At the checkout counter, the total keeps rising higher and higher. In the last six months, food prices have risen by over 27%. The size of the beef herds in America is at a fifty year low and the impact upon consumers will, inevitably, be sharp. Obama and his Kobe beef-eating friends, invariably rich, do not feel the pinch. All the rest of us do. Government could do a lot to lower food prices, from ending the Ethanol scam to overriding environmentalists who are turning some of the richest farmland on earth in California into a dust bowl. The flamboyant traveling of Obama and his wife will also be a counterpoint to the struggling of ordinary people. Once, many Americans indulgently absorbed his costly trips to fancy places as the giddy toys of a newly elected leader who grew up in uncertain conditions. Now each trip will remind Americans that he is feasted while they furtively seek the best prices for basic commodities at discount groceries -- knowing that Obama himself is not pushing a shopping cart anywhere or paying any checkout clerk.Worse still, Michelle Obama has adopted as her signature program the obesity of our children and healthy diets for all Americans. This will make millions of Americans simmer. The overweight are not the rich of America, who can afford watercress sandwiches, organic arugula and then a deep massage. The poor and the middle class can only afford to buy cheap foods, the foods on which the economically pressed throughout human history have eaten of necessity. What are these foods? The food of poor folk consists of pasta, bread, potatoes and other starchy foods. The last thing that the mothers of poor and middle class America need, while rushing to fix dinner for their family, are lectures from someone who can have, literally, any meal she fancies prepared for her at the taxpayers' expense instructing us on how to be better cooks.Hmmmm......."Let them eat cake"?Read the full story here.

  • Palestinians want 'day of rage' against US.Fatah, Hamas leaders incensed by decision to veto UN vote to condemn Israeli settlements, saying it reveals lie behind calls for democracy, freedom in Arab world. 'We'll appeal to General Assembly,' says PLO secretary.Palestinian leaders called for a "day of rage" Saturday in the streets of West Bank cities after the US vetoed a UN condemnation of Israeli settlements Friday. Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said the Palestinians would take their resolution to the UN General Assembly."Our decision today is to go to the General Assembly of the United Nations to adopt a resolution condemning settlements and asserting their illegality before returning to the Security Council to present a proposed condemnation of settlements," he told AFP."The American veto will not prevent us from appealing to international institutions and will not stop our desire for freedom and independence," he said."There is no American mediator in the peace process and that is why we have no choice but to turn to the General Assembly to call for a halt in settlement construction." "It appears the US does not see the dramatic changes going on in the region, which are bringing freedom and democracy," he said, adding that the Palestinians would "make use of our right to appeal to international institutions, because the settlements are illegal". After the decision was made public Friday night, senior PLO member Yasser Abed Rabbo said the Palestinians would "reconsider peace negotiations", adding that the US decision was "unbalanced" and hurt the peace process. On Saturday morning Hamas held a press conference in Gaza aimed at criticizing the US as well. "The American veto is an oppressive decision which disgraces the rights of the Palestinian people and reveals the truth about US support for all of the crimes the Zionist enemy commits in its service," said spokesman Fawzi Barhoum.Meanwhile, Israel commended the US' decision. Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said that "the continuing attempts by the Palestinians to circumvent direct negotiations and impose a solution have been doomed to failure"."If the Palestinians are serious about solving the conflict they should halt the political attacks against Israel and renew direct negotiations immediately without excuses," he said.Hmmmmm.......Explanation of Vote on the Resolution on the Situation in the Middle East, including the question of Palestine, in the Security Council Chamber."Our opposition to the resolution before this Council today should therefore not be misunderstood to mean we support settlement activity. On the contrary, we reject in the strongest terms the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity".What's the chances Obama will stab Israel in the back?Read the full story here.

  • House Votes to Block Funds for Obamacare.WASHINGTON (AP) – In rapid-fire action Friday, the Republican-controlled House voted to strip federal money from President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul and from Planned Parenthood and to bar the EPA from issuing global warming regulations.Upping the ante in the budget faceoff, the Obama administration warned that workers who distribute Social Security benefits might be furloughed if congressional Republicans force cuts in government spending. In a letter the Social Security Administration sent to its employees’ union, agency officials said that while no decision about furloughs had been made, they were possible “given the potential of reduced congressional appropriations.”The letter was circulated by congressional Democrats, who said such cuts could mean shuttered Social Security offices and delayed benefit payments. The letter’s distribution by Democrats underscored how the threat of jeopardizing Social Security payments is a potent political weapon.GOP lawmakers accused Democrats of “irresponsible scare tactics,” and said their proposed cuts would not affect benefits or force the Social Security Administration to close offices. Any furloughs “would result only if that decision were made by the administration,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., said in a written statement.Republicans are pushing a huge spending bill through the House that would impose deep cuts on domestic programs. The overall bill is the first step in an increasingly bitter struggle between Democrats and Republicans over how much to cut federal agencies’ funding over the second half of the budget year that ends Sept. 30. Current funding runs out March 4 and a temporary spending bill will be needed to avoid a government shutdown.Republicans say the legislation would pare Social Security’s administrative budget by $125 million from current levels plus another $500 million from a reserve fund. Democrats say the cut would leave the agency with $1.7 billion less than Obama requested.Much of Friday’s focus was on GOP efforts to block implementation of Obama’s health care overhaul, which dominated Congress’ work in 2009 and was enacted last year. An amendment by Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., to block the health care overhaul money was approved by a 239-187 vote. The GOP has virtually no chance of killing the law because of support for the program from Obama and the Democratic-run Senate, but House Republicans have been trying relentlessly to chip away at it.“It’s a law designed by those who wish to control every health care decision made by health care providers and patients, by every employer and employee, by every family and individual,” Rehberg said.Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., said the GOP effort would “put insurance companies back in charge, further demonstrating the majority’s special-interest priorities and hypocrisy on job creation and deficit reduction.”In Friday’s action, Republicans muscled through a proposal to block federal aid to Planned Parenthood by a 240-185 vote and won bipartisan support to reverse a proposed Obama administration rule that seeks to crack down of for-profit colleges and vocational schools. A proposal by Texas Republican Ted Poe to strip the Environmental Protection Agency of its authority to issue regulations on global warming passed by a 249-177 vote.Taken together, Friday’s developments pushed the GOP-dominated House and the president even further apart as a March 4 deadline looms. It may make it more difficult to reach agreement if House Republicans become wedded to positions opposed by Obama and the Democratic-led Senate. With a government shutdown possible if the spending measure isn’t extended at least temporarily, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, inflamed the situation Thursday by insisting that the GOP-controlled House would refuse to approve even a short-term measure at current spending levels.“Read my lips: We’re going to cut spending,” Boehner declared. Democrats immediately charged that Boehner was maneuvering Congress to the precipice of a government shutdown.Hmmmm.......The end is near?Read the full story here.

  • Rights group: 84 dead in Libyan protests.Forces storm protest camp in Benghazi, attack hundreds of people calling for Gadhafi's removal.Libyan special forces stormed a two-day-old protest encampment in the country's second largest city, clearing the area early Saturday, said witnesses, as a human rights group estimated 84 people have died in the harsh crackdown on days of demonstrations.Internet was also cut around 2 am removing one of the few ways of Libyans can get out information about the waves of anti-government protests in one of the most isolated and repressive nations in North Africa. At 5 am on Saturday, special forces attacked hundreds of protesters, including lawyers and judges, camped out in front of the courthouse in the eastern city of Benghazi, which has been a focus for the anti-government unrest. "They fired tear gas on protesters in tents and cleared the areas after many fled carrying the dead and the injured," one protester said over the phone from Benghazi. "This is a ghost city; we are all afraid that something big is going to happen in Benghazi today." The protester declined to be identified, echoing the fear of reprisal widespread among the people. The New York-based Human Rights Watch estimated 84 people have been killed across the east over the last three days, based on reports from hospitals and witnesses. Tolls given to the Associated Press Friday largely tally with those announced by the rights group.Residents in Benghazi, which has borne the brunt of the casualties, said just hours before the attack on the encampment, the mood was ebullient as protesters torched police stations, government buildings and took over the local radio station. They had set up tents on the street in front of the city's courthouse, overlooking the sea. "We were preparing for a day of celebrations but now we don't know what the day will look like," the protester said. Doctors in Benghazi said Friday that 35 bodies had been admitted to the hospital following attacks by security forces backed by militias, on top of more than a dozen killed the day before. At least five cities of eastern Libya have seen protests and clashes in recent days. In one of them, Beyida, a hospital official said Friday that the bodies of at least 23 protesters slain over the past 48 hours were at his facility, which was treating about 500 wounded, some in the parking lot for lack of beds.Forces from the military's elite Khamis Brigade moved into Benghazi, Beyida and several other cities, residents said. They were accompanied by militias that seemed to include foreign mercenaries, they added. Several witnesses reported French-speaking fighters, believed to be Tunisians or sub-Saharan Africans, among militiamen wearing blue uniforms and yellow helmets. The Khamis Brigade is led by Gadhafi's youngest son Khamis Gadhafi, and US diplomats in leaked memos have called it "the most well-trained and well-equipped force in the Libyan military." The witnesses' reports that it had been deployed could not be independently confirmed. The government made an apparent gesture aimed at easing protests. The news website Quryna, which has ties to Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, another of the leader's sons, said Friday that the country's national congress has halted its session indefinitely and said many state executives will be replaced when it returns. In addition to replacing top officials, it will endorse reforms to decentralize and restructure the government, it said. There have been few anti-government protests in the capital Tripoli, in the west of the country, and instead the government has staged large pro-Gadhafi rallies.Read the full story here. More here.

Scott Walker’s proposal to public employees of collective bargaining rights.Pelosi told reporters Friday that the protests are “an extraordinary show of democracy in action.”“Wisconsin's workers, teachers and public servants must have a seat at the table to fight for a safe workplace,” she said. “I stand in solidarity with the Wisconsin workers fighting for their rights, especially for all the students and young people leading the charge.”Jesse Jackson also supports the protesters, as does Obama. • HT:BigGovernment.Lessons From Wisconsin: Big Government Handouts Promote Big Dependence. As school teachers and other publically employed members of unions in Wisconsin continue their march on that state’s capital, protesters frequently compare Republican Governor Scott Walker to Hitler or some other megalomaniac bent on destroying the hopes and dreams of the middle class. Some Wisconsin politicians, like state senator Fred Risser (D-Madison), paint the governor a despot by claiming that “[Walker] comes across more like a dictator and less like a leader.” And President Obama has asserted himself in the mix to assure union leaders he stands with them and believes the legislation Governor Walker supports will “just [make] it harder for public employees to collectively bargain generally,” and that it is “an assault on unions.”As Rush Limbaugh put it: “Average, ordinary Americans who are paying the salaries and the health benefits and the pensions [of union members] are losing their jobs and losing their homes. [So] there isn’t any money anymore!” And this means average Americans, like those in Wisconsin, can’t afford to foot an extravagant bill for others any longer.Governor Walker campaigned on reining things in financially for Wisconsin, and he’s doing just that. Along the way, he’s hit on a nerve that proves the validity of the assertion that big government handouts promote big dependence.Hmmmm......."A fat pig doesn't feel that a skinny pig is hungry"?Read the full story here.

  • UK - Tablighi Jamaat mosque accused of encouraging Muslim isolationism. The Islamic group Tablighi Jamaat, which is fighting to keep its east London mosque, is described as a supremacist movement at a planning inquiry. An Islamic group fighting to keep its east London mosque, near to the Olympics site, has been described by opponents as a "supremacist movement" that encourages isolationism from wider British society.Tablighi Jamaat, a global proselytising movement with tens of thousands of members in the UK, is trying to overturn an enforcement notice on its mosque, called the Riverine Centre, after temporary planning permission expired in 2006.A planning inquiry at Newham town hall will determine whether the group can continue to use the modest collection of buildings. On Thursday it heard that followers of Tablighi Jamaat were taught to "shun integration with all unbelievers in order to be uncontaminated Muslims and to isolate themselves from wider society".According to evidence from Dr Taj Hargey, an imam who runs a progressive Islamic educational centre in Oxford, the "isolationist dynamic" of Tablighi Jamaat has caused the growth of a "separatist Muslim enclave" in the streets around its Dewsbury headquarters.Hargey told the inquiry that Tablighi Jamaat had "achieved very little for the community" and rejected the group's assertions that closing the mosque would lead to the marginalisation of Muslim youth. He said: "Over the past 14 years that TJ has occupied the site it has furnished no proven track record of opening their facilities to the wider Muslim community, let alone non-Muslim community. In that time they have not even managed to create any facilities for women. The facility itself currently contributes substantially to marginalisation". • Muslim religion teacher who amassed £1.7m property portfolio using fraudulent mortgage claims while receiving benefits is jailed.A religious teacher who managed to amass a portfolio of ten properties using £1.7million of fraudulently-obtained mortgages has been jailed.Syed Shah, 45, paid just £24.60 in income tax over a five year period and also claimed benefits despite developing his impressive array of properties, costing the lenders he duped around £450,000. The dad-of-six from Bradford created a series of bogus identities and even invented a job for himself - saying he worked at a school which was in fact derelict - to get financial support.Jonathan Sharp, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court on Thursday that Shah had benefited from his underhand plan to the tune of £391,000. Mr Sharp said Shah had also gone to some length to establish false employers references and had backed up his various aliases with false identification documents, including passports, with bank accounts opened in the appropriate names. He also repeatedly quoted that he worked for the Muslim Educational Centre at Boundary Farm in Leeds, but the Crown argued that this was in fact a facade for Shah's dishonesty because it was derelict. Jailing Shah for five years and eight months, Recorder of Leeds Judge Peter Collier QC, said: 'You persisted in a course of conduct over several years. 'It involved considerable planning in advance when you created bogus identities investing these people with bank accounts in which you put money sometimes many months in advance of when you were going to use those identities.''It was calculated to cause significant loss to financial institutions who you had persuaded to loan you monies by gross deceptions and the creation of bogus identities. • Suadi - Petition to lift ban on women driving.JEDDAH/TAIF: While helping with her family’s farm outside Taif, 15 year-old Nora Muslaah usually drives the truck that carries vegetables from the field to her family’s home.Although she has four younger brothers, as the oldest she feels it her duty to help out her family as much as possible, adding that she does not feel she is breaking the law. She feels she is only doing what so many Saudi women living outside major cities do everyday to assist their families.“Because most families have a lot of work to do in rural areas and are usually living spaced apart, unlike large cities, most police authorities here don’t strictly enforce the driving ban as long as women drive safely and don’t cause trouble. Everything is fine with most officials found to look the other way,” Muslaah said.In fact, according to some people, such as Saudi businessman and economist Abdullah Alami, the boundary lines on who can and cannot drive in the Kingdom is not exactly clear to prohibit women from driving.“Driving in Saudi Arabia is a right for men as well as women if you examine the Saudi Traffic Regulations,” Alami said. “Article 32 of the Traffic Regulations states that it is prohibited for any ‘person’ driving a vehicle without a driver’s license. Based on this rule, it does not limit licenses to only men but to a ‘person’ in general,” Alami explained. With this argument intact, Alami is currently leading a campaign to permanently lift the ban on women driving. In January, Alami sent a petition to the Shoura Council for review. The petition included the signatures of 136 Saudis, 38 of whom were men. Surprisingly, a majority of men said they do not mind if women drive.“The issue is based on trust and control within one’s own family,” said Hani Abdullah, a Saudi father of four.“I would prefer to allow my daughters and wife to drive rather than have a driver. In my opinion, drivers in many Saudi families these days are allowed to get too involved with families and know too many private things about them. This is against the principles of religion,” he added. The petition recently sent to the Shoura Council by Alami not only asks for the ban to be lifted but also includes requests for a women’s section to be included within the Kingdom’s police departments, driving schools and licenses for women, and stringent punishment for men who harass women drivers.Hmmm......I wish the ladies the best of luck.Read the full story here.

  • Helen Thomas: Jews didn't have to leave Europe following Holocaust. The Jews did not have to leave Germany and Poland following the Holocaust since they were not being persecuted anymore, former White House correspondent Helen Thomas said in an interview on Thursday, adding that the Jews had no right to take other people's land. Thomas, 90, stepped down from her job as a columnist for Hearst News Service in June of last year after a rabbi and independent filmmaker videotaped her outside the White House calling on Israelis to get "out of Palestine.""There hasn't been persecution since that, since World War II. You don’t take other people's land," Thomas said in reference to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. When Behar asked Thomas if she realized that her comment regarding sending the Jews back to Poland and Germany were insensitive in view of the past the Jews share with those countries, the former correspondent said: "I also said Russia." "Well Russia, they had their share of anti-Semitic pogroms," the CNN interviewer said, to which Thomas answered: "They also had 25 million who died in World War II…. More than that." "They didn't have to go anywhere really, because they weren’t being persecuted anymore but they were taking other people's land," Thomas said, adding of the perceived insensitivity of her comments by saying: "Count how many Palestinians are in jails now, taken from their homes, a million refugees, is that sensitive?" Responding to Behar's question whether or not she considered herself to be anti-Semitic, Thomas said: "Hell no! I'm a Semite…of Arab background," and saying of the Jews: "They're not Semites. I mean, most of them are from Europe."When asked by Behar how would she revise her comments in view of the reactions they garnered, Thomas said: "Why do they have to go anywhere? They aren't being persecuted! They don't have the right to take other people's land. Under international law occupied land should not be annexed," Thomas said.Hmmmm......." • Muslim Brotherhood attacks Egyptian Casinos.Following Egypt President Hosni Mubarak’s forced resignation from office a week ago, one of the biggest concern was that religious groups would gain control in the country before democracy even had a chance to grow. Although still early days, a series of targeted attacks on some of Cairo’s most famous casinos has signalled a possible shift to religious intolerance in Egypt’s troubled capital city.Over a week’s period, the Europa, the Arizona, the Andalous, the Gandool and the Ramses have all come under attack by gangs of rioters hell bent on destroying these businesses. For instance, on Tuesday the Europa Egypt hotel was attacked by “about 1,000 young guys” who either destroyed or pillaged property from the establishment, while a little earlier the Ramses casino was firebombed causing two fatalities. As these attacks continue, “the ones with the beards”, as a policeman described them, were largely being blamed for the attacks on casinos labelled “dens of vice” by Muslim theologians. As quoted by the Financial Times, the policeman then went on to explain: “We are all religious, its just that some of the people in our society, a narrow current of them, take this to an extreme. They destroy anyone who is not like them. They have been using the chaos to their advantage.”In the Islamic faith playing games is fine but as far as money is concerned, it is decreed “There should be no prizes except for contests in archery, camel-racing or horse-racing.”Consequently, the Islamic Sunni transnational movement known as The Muslim Brothers is being seen as a possibly perpetrator of the attacks in an attempt to enforce their religious agenda on the country. However, the group’s Cairo spokesman Essam al Erian was keen to dispel the rumours and said they were not responsible and that it was probably anti-revolution police trying to stir up sectarian violence.Hmmmm.........Clapper : "The Muslim Brotherhood is "Largely Secular".  Read the full story here.

  • Islam's the problems, not Muslims, says Senator Cory Bernardi.TONY Abbott's official frontbench understudy has reignited immigration tensions by denouncing Islam as a "totalitarian, political and religious ideology". Liberal parliamentary secretary Cory Bernardi revealed last night he had received death threats after making the comments. While the immigration debate usually differentiates between the religion of Islam and extreme fundamentalist interpretations, Senator Bernardi confronted the issue head-on yesterday."Islam itself is the problem - it's not Muslims," he told radio station MTR."Muslims are individuals that practise their faith in their own way, but Islam is a totalitarian, political and religious ideology."It tells people everything about how they need to conduct themselves, who they're allowed to marry and how they're allowed to treat other people."Senator Bernardi said Islam had "not moved on" since it was founded and that extremists wanted fundamentalist Islamic rule implemented in Australia. The senator also inflamed the row over funeral expenses for asylum-seekers by declaring that it was "wrong" for taxpayers to foot the bill. The remarks provoked a strong reaction from Ikebal Patel, president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, who said Senator Bernardi had "crossed the line" with his attack on Islam.Hmmmm......Read the full story here.

  • And now for something completely different.Monster meets its match: Record-breaking alligator gar fish caught in Mississippi lake.It may not have been love at first sight but it was certainly a Valentine's Day to remember for angler Kenny Williams when he landed an alligator gar that tipped the scales at a world record 327lbs.Williams, from Vicksburg, Mississippi, bagged the fish in Chotard Lake, Issaquena County, using nets to catch it and then grabbing it by the gills to heave it into the boat.Biologists with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks measured the beast at 8ft 51/4ins long, with a girth of 47.95ins, and estimated it to be between 50 and 70 years old.The current International Game Fish Association record belongs to a 279-pounder pulled from the Rio Grande in Texas in 1951.'At first I didn't think he was that big. But as I was getting him into the boat, it was like, How big is this thing? It was a lot of effort just to get him into the boat,' Williams told ABC affiliate WAPT-TV in Jackson.Hmmmmm.......Correction record for Alligator gar : 365 lbs - 9 ft 6 in texas by Kirk Kirkland - 1991.Read and see the full story here.
